Maybe try a diff toilet seat like this:

When I needed to replace the seat on my toilet, I picked up one with a soft close. It's a little thing, but it's really nice not having to worry about slamming the silly thing all the time.

u/Trambampolean · 13 pointsr/DoesAnybodyElse

Just get a soft close toilet seat problem solved.

I use a bucket system like this and it works fine. My favorite method is to use pine shavings or pine sawdust.

You start with an empty bucket and add a layer of pine down, maybe an inch. Do your business, add enough shavings on top to cover your business. The only thing you end up smelling is the pine.

Once it's full (or heavy enough) you empty the bucket into a suitable compost bin and cover it with a biofilter. Old hay, straw, leaves, weeds, grass clippings, pine needles. Whatever is convenient/on hand.

Wash/rinse the bucket and it's good to go. Some people like to have multiple buckets on hand so when one is full they put a lid on it and wait till have several before dumping. A bit more efficient and convenient for some people.

It doesn't smell any worse then a regular bathroom, in fact in my opinion it smells better, as once the initial smell of your business fades all that is left is pine.

I use this lid. It's sturdy, has a seal and easily snaps on and off standard size buckets. Being portable makes it more convenient, as I can move it to where it needs to be when I need it there.

When the weather is nice I usually just keep it outside, but I have a lot of privacy. I can also take it camping.

How often you empty it really depends on how much you use it and how many people use it. When the weather is suitable I often just pee outside somewhere and often use it to fertilize my garden or pee on a compost bin. It's perfectly fine fertilizer if used right. I can dig up some links if you want.

So my buckets take about a week or two to fill up generally speaking. People uncomfortable, unable or unwilling to do that will fill up buckets faster.

I know a family of 4 who go through about 4 buckets a week during the warm months and maybe 6 during the winter.

This is the one I have. You can buy one that has a hook up for hot water as well but my tap water isn't cold for whatever reason so it doesn't bother me to just have a cold water line. It uses the water that would eventually run to the tank. It's basically like using the water from your sink line--I know a lot of people think that its uses "toilet bowl" water but it doesn't. It's really easy to install. I actually have reinstalled it on a different toilet in my house and it worked on both. You do have to buy little spacers to attach to the bottom of your toilet seat since the bidet attachment makes the back of the seat sit a bit higher than the front. Again, they're really easy to install/uninstall. Definitely get the ones that screw on so they don't fall off one day into the toilet.

To use you just stay seated and SLOWLY turn on the knob. The one I have linked has SUPER HIGH water pressure but maybe there are models that aren't so strong. Do NOT turn it on while you're standing in front of it "just to make sure it works". I shot myself in the chest the first time I tested it hahahaha. Lots of guests also get curious and turn it on while standing in front of the toilet instead of sitting and end up getting shot in the chest or face. It's hilarious. My father in law for shot in the forehead with the water!

All in all its a 45$ investment if you use the same set up I did--definitely worth the money and if you can always upgrade to a different model if you end up liking it!

There are handheld type options that look like a shower head but they require maneuvering on the toilet and seem like more trouble than just staying seated.

I tried moist wipes for a while but a lot of them have alcohol in them and seemed to dry out more than they helped.

Sorry for the long winded response, hope it was helpful!

A seemingly much more useful and awesome toilet seat.

When you can splurge for a heated/light-up toilet seat, you fuckin know you've made it.

u/iminatub · 6 pointsr/Mommit

Put him on the potty before bath time and tell him he has to poop in there before the shower. If he doesn't go and poops in the tub, bath time is all done.

I would totally avoid the small potty seat if possible. We bought a toilet seat that has a small potty seat built right into it. We got it at lowe's for like $40. My daughter feels safe and secure and honestly cleaning poop out of a little potty is horrible haha.

Here's my "asshole with too much disposable income" version. .

  • Toto Toilet Seat
  • Inada Massage Chair
  • "Fitness" Pole
  • Parallettes

The toilet seat is wonderful - I mean we're piping in and heating up water for the express purpose of making going to the bathroom a much better and toilet paper free experience. It even has a pink button for girls I never press.

The chair costs far less (and I bought mine in person for substantially cheaper than amazon sells it) than many people will spend on inconsequential upgrades for a car. It is soothing to know that on-demand you or anyone you choose to let use the chair can access a pleasant, therapeutic experience for the price of a dime's worth of electricity.

The parallel bars gave me access to press handstands, something I can do on concrete in public now without fear. I do street performance of acroyoga for fun and it's incredibly inviting to be able to be at ease playing acrobatically in public. The pole is crazy difficult, humbling, and a party in 4 square feet. AMA!

A nice juicy ribeye with garlic rosemary rub, these cheesy twice baked potatoes topped with egg, a caesar salad with crunchy croutons, a glass of pinot noir or sparkling water, and your choice of ice cream pie YUM! I'll add a link when my amazon is done eating itself.

EDIT- Amazon is done hating me. At least for now. Yes, I broke my toilet

Sure a hot shower can stave of feelings of desperation. But if you just want to get clean, a five gallon bucket of water with a lid and a few drops of bleach (not too much, you don't want to smell like chlorine) can hold 100 white shop towels . You take a couple out each day and clean yourself up.

If you have two more 5 gallon buckets, one can be fitted with this. You'd want to line it with a garbage bag and throw some kitty litter in there, but it would suffice.

The third bucket you fill with soapy water, and toss your clothes/rags in and then when you need to wash them they're already pretty clean from jostling around in a moving vehicle for a day or two.

I could go on an on, but this is starting to turn into a prepper type thing. I'm sure there are plenty of videos out there that can teach a person better than I can explain it.

The most important thing though is to stay healthy and strong.

Here you go. I picked it as an example because it was a best seller and looked fairly cheap, but maybe there are cheaper ones too.

Not sure about Amazon shipping prices though. I have a friend in Japan who forwards me stuff, so I just looked up Japan Post prices.

EDIT: And you may need to account or any further customs fees. Here it's like €8, but it's different in each EU country.

EDIT2: And I looked at the weight wrong. The product itself weights 4kg, but the box is 6kg, so the shipping comes in at 9400yen (SAL) or 5100yen (Surface mail).

u/JagerForBreakfast · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Not even a full weekend, but definitely worthwhile: swap out your toilet seats for the soft-close variety.. Toilet seats get gross and worn over time, and I can't explain how "luxurious" soft-close seats feel.. Not to mention it'll completely save your sanity if you have kids in the house.

I used these, but you don't have to get them from amazon - Lowe's and Home Depot sell them too. Expect to spend about $40 each.. They come in the standard (circular) and elongated varieties - make sure to grab the one that matches your toilet (if unsure take measurements of the bowl before you go shopping - the box has the measurements right on it). They take about 5 minutes each to install assuming your existing bolts aren't rusted. And as an added bonus they detach without having to remove the bolts for easy cleaning.

u/therealmrsbrady · 2 pointsr/YouShouldKnow

It definitely does, yes. I did quite a bit of research before buying and was willing to spend around $100 or so but this specific model had the best overall reviews and added features for females as well, your gf will thank you I'm sure. (Side note, I initially ordered the blue but it looked, idk cheap somehow so I exchanged it for the white only and it looks much, much better, not cheap looking at all.)

A couple suggestions on other things that make a big difference imo for another $20 combined roughly, both recommended by other reviewers as well as a few specific YouTube installation videos (there is one that finally sold me on it, I'll see if I can find that too). A better/more solid and lasting brass, chrome finish T-adapter which also has a shut off and is compatible with this model (the 185 comes with a plastic one and only a few reported leaks and it doesn't have a shut off either and will eventually need to be replaced down the line). As well as toilet seat bumpers, taking into account the bidet only raises the seat a little but enough to not make it feel solid, the bumpers make it feel as it should, 100% solid with them.

The links for you to check out and maybe add to your wishlist (I personally highly suggest them):

KES Toilet Lavatory Brass... https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00JIG4AGM?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

Danco 10062 Toilet Seat Bumper... https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00EA080X0?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

Edit: This is the YouTube link where the guy uses the upgraded adapter as well as the bumpers and shows how to install easily too. (You'll see the 185 features that do make a big difference to me.)

There's not really any bidet you could call mainstream in the US, but one product that comes kind of close is the Toto Washlet, a popular and well-liked item that's been around a while. Take a close look at the pros and cons to see if it would meet your needs, as it's not strictly a bidet like the kind you'd find in, say, Italy.

You could probably find a plumber or kitchen/bath remodeler in your area who could handle the installation—and given the skill level you're describing, I would leave the job to a pro.

u/LobsterManFightClub · 2 pointsr/Showerthoughts

Like this? I think it's kind of a neat idea because then you don't have to touch the toilet lid to put it up but it costs waaay too much for what it is.

It seems lik you could just harvest parts from a trash can but that would probably look really bad.

u/gamerfather · 2 pointsr/Parenting

I'm not a regular contributor, but I felt like making a top-10 list of my favorite books so far. (My son will be turning 3 soon.)

The rules mention links to facebook or blogs; I'm hoping non-referral links to Amazon are okay. I'll link board books where possible, because pages get ripped and torn until at least two-and-a-half years of age.

  • Little Blue Truck: Most parents probably already know this one. Great book for when children are starting to speak - you can point to each of the animals and ask what it "says."
  • Jamberry: Beautiful illustrations, and it can be read as a song. I'm pretty sure two verses were switched - I think it should be "Three berry four berry, my berry your berry, hayberry strawberry, finger and pawberry." Bugs me a little bit.
  • Chugga Chugga Choo Choo: Another singable book with rhymes and good illustrations, and a good means of prompting child participation - they can fill in the "whoo whooo!" part.
  • Planting a Rainbow: Great eye-grabbing book for learning colors. Can also be read with a rhythm, though it isn't as singable as the others.
  • Little Owl's Night: Great book for pre-empting any fears of the dark. "Owls wake up at night time, and sleep when the sun is up." Surely if this little owl is chilling at night with his fox and turtle buddies, that means nighttime is nothing to be afraid of.
  • The Little Dump Truck: Has a good rhythm and good illustrations. Helps give your kid, who loves dump trucks but doesn't know why, an idea of what dump trucks actually do.
  • Twenty Big Trucks in the Middle of the Street: Fantastic counting book, and has a good rhythm as well. Highly recommend for getting your kid to count past ten.
  • Potty: A godsend for potty training. Start reading it a couple months before you introduce the potty, and read it often. We potty-trained our son at about 34 months with a combination of this book and Season 2, Episode 1 of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood. He used a little plastic thing for about two weeks before we moved him up to the integrated seat, which is great because it can just be wiped down after use.
  • Julia's House for Lost Creatures: Beautifully illustrated, and a great introduction to cleaning up after yourself. "What do good boys do if they make a little mess?" "Um, clean up!" The text doesn't flow well in some parts - I get the impression that this was intended for comic-book reading children - but it isn't overly wordy and has more than enough art to compensate.
  • Why is the Grass Green? First Questions and Answers about Nature: If anyone knows about a more recent version of this, I'd be very interested. We found this one in a library's outdoor "take one, leave one" box. Some of it is still too advanced for our little one to wrap his head around, but the way this book distills concepts into concise explanations with simple wording is amazing. Highly recommended for any child that asks a lot of "why" questions.

My wife had a habit of being like most other women, and bitching when I didn't put the seat down. I quickly fixed this problem by installing one of these

If I'm going to be punished, everyone is going to have to be punished. With the slow close lid, I just smack it and both the seat and the lid fall at the same time without slamming.

I still have to lift the seat up when I go to take a piss, but she still has to lift the lid up when she uses the bathroom. I no longer allow standard toilet seats in our house.

u/BellaLou324 · 1 pointr/Mommit

I know some kids don't like the potty seats because they wiggle a little bit. You might try something like this Mayfair Potty Training Seat.

It's basically a regular toilet seat that has another part that comes down to turn it into a toddler seat. Makes it seem like a more adult seat, and is a lot more secure.

u/Grammar-Hitler · 1 pointr/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

When I have to take that cold early-morning shit I run it over with the hair dryer for about a minute till it gets lukewarm. I'm saving up for one of these. Although that's kind of a luxury, I could also solve the cold-seat problem with this, 8x cheaper.

Working at a daycare I have helped potty train about 20 children in the last 4 years. Things will vary from child to child, but In hope I can help with the suggestions we give most parents.

Firstly, potty training can be super frustrating one of the things that can contribute to this is that many kids can't fully control when they go potty until they are about 2 1/2.

First they'll start noticing that they are wet, then they will begin to notice that they will pee, then they will finally have enough muscle control to know when they will pee and to control whether or not they do so.

Now, that doesn't mean you can't start early if you think they are ready, but it will require extra patience!

Secondly, I know this is weird but it is ideal for them see that their parents use the potty. If possible the same sexed parent since they have the same equipment. Talk them through the process as you go.

"I am going to use the potty because I need to go pee. I am going to pull down my pants and sit on the potty (or stand talk about whichever you're doing). I'm finished and now I'm going to flush the pee away. Look! I went pee and my pants are still dry and clean! It is so much nicer than having a wet diaper!"

Let him observe a few times, he may volunteere to sit on the potty to be like Mommy or Daddy or he may not, but now you've opened a dialogue and can have a conversation about it.

"I think it is time for you to sit on the potty just like I do! I know you don't like it when your diaper is wet and this way you can stay dry! Let's try to go pee in the potty!"

Also, instead of Mini potties I highly recommend these: Topseat 6TSTE9999CP 000 Tiny Haney Potty Toilet Seat, Adult/Child with Chromed Metal Hinges, Wood, Elongated, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EAR80ME/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_4zXnzbQASA39M

I, too, did the "too cool to take the time to care about toilet seats" thing and just bought one at Home Depot. Only, in my case, I bought one that had a built in mini-potty seat for kids.

Pretty easy to ignore and just not care about that aspect of it, except I bought it mere months after my wife and I got married and, as luck would have it, my Mom came to visit the day I installed it. There was no amount of denial that was acceptable, she was convinced my wife was pregnant and "nesting."

Mine hated the seat that goes on the toilet, so for a bit we went back to the little potty, but if you have a Home Depot or something similar near you, they sell seats with the kid seat attached so the kid would just lift the seat and pull the kid seat down and then when they put the kid down it reattaches with a magnet, pops out really easy for cleaning as well.

I just googled it and apparently you can find them just about anywhere. But here’s what it looks like.
