Yeah QS sent out a message about it and thus buyout. The plus side is instead of spending $17 on it you can spend $22 on it, Nykthos, promo Prophet of Kruphix, promo Temple of Mystery, promo prognostic sphinx, and over 100 other cards.

These are all great suggestions, one that I don't see here however, is the clash pack. Here is a link to it on amazon so you know what it looks like and how much it is.

http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Gathering-Card-Game-2015/dp/B00KXY3NS4

You say that he's dying to get into it, which to me means he has very few or even no cards and has played with friends cards and the like. This is a fantastic option because it has two preconstructed decks in it which allow you to just jump right in and play with your friends. You could even play with him with this if you and him each took one of the decks and learn the game together. (this comes with instructions too :P)

There are a couple pretty good cards in this pack that will translate into being playable at a more competitive level, something which doesn't always happen with the pre-constructed decks such as this. It's also relatively cheap and you can add a couple boosters packs to it to spice it up a little as a gift.

Any local games store provided by http://locator.wizards.com/ should have these or similar products from past sets.

Not really the same vain, exactly, but since no one mentioned it, [Monopoly Deal] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NQQTZCO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Gn5DzbXT5PZD6) is way more fun than regular old Monopoly.

u/FallenAerials · 19 pointsr/boardgames

Monopoly Deal is an awesome card game that scratches the Monopoly itch. Fun, fast-paced, confrontational card game full of "take that!" mechanics and acquiring properties. Plays very well with 2-5 players and works great as a gateway game. For $5.99 on Amazon, it's a great price too. Really recommended. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NQQTZCO/

Make sure you're looking at the right ones. The original run of GF9 cards are now out of print, and a new updated printing is in the works. You can get the updated printing for only a couple of classes right now, and things like the arcane deck will be available very soon. Whether or not the revised decks will stay in print is another question, so make sure you order them soon.

Amazon: Arcane Deck, revised edition

u/RelevantCardLink · 14 pointsr/magicTCG

You might want to check out Deck Builders Toolkit. It's m13 but you will get plenty of basic lands, and other cards + boosters for 20$. Then you could use the other 20$ on dragon's maze boosters.

Broken dishwasher, broken washing machine, broken dryer. Dishwasher now fixed but we don't have a dryer at all and our washing machince just buzzes and doesnt wash. Ended up going to the local laundromat to do all of my laundry and sheets. Still not sure if we're renewing the lease. Maybe I should just find another place to live >(

I bought project highrise during the summer steam sale. That was a lot of fun. Oxygen not included is hard for me. I can't get the whole filteration system working (air and water)

Bought a game called Mint works. SUPER FUN! EVEN IN SOLO MODE! I'm going to go play some more of it right now. Can't wait to try playing it with other people. I do have a few other board games coming from amazon: Pandemic, Treasure Hunter Game, Gloom Second Edition: Unhappy Home expansion, Dairyman, monopoly deal, and i preordered splatoon 2

I finally was honest to myself and worked on my budget and student loan repayment plan. Budget looks kinda ugly. I'm terrified. There's never going to be enough money in this world... Also, I've been overspending like crazy. I'm really good at budgeting when I see the numbers. I was just in denial for the longest time because I wanted to treat myself. I didn't have the "college experience" so i went out a lot, ate out a lot, and overall threw money at crafts and animals. I'll have to be more findful now.

I wanted to get another hobonichi, but realized that they won't have them for 2017 anymore. I started looked at other notebooks. I do have a midori, but I don't really want to use it for bullet journaling. It gets quite expensive because I want to use that and keep that more as a notetaker/jot it down. I bought this STALOGY which looks pretty good. I'll be keeping an expense log, bullet journaling, and random notetaking in it.

I bought a vintage sewing machine recently. The singer slant-o-matic. I used them as a middleschooler in home economics and it's 100% BOMB. I was thinking about getting a more modern machine, but went Nah. The set I bought also came with a bunch of extra bobbins.

Last week I was at a fair and saw some people doing pillow lace/bobbin lace. It looks so awesome. I want to try it! It's a bit costly to get started though... I'm going to hold off on it for a while and use nontraditional materials to make some lace.

Since I'm really struggling with making friends and DOING SOMETHING that's not gaming, redditing, animals, and cleaning... I figured I could go take some community college classes (interior design, fashion, flower arrangement, etc), cello lessons, piano lessons, modern dance/ballet/jazz/hip hop lessons, sewing lessons, or something like that to get me out of the house.

On Wednesday, I went bouldering for the first time. I'm a bosssssss. JK. I haven't worked out in ages. My arms basically fell off when I woke up thursday morning. Couldnt even flush the toilet, open the fridge, or open the door. They even felt swollen. My legs were fine though. Normally with swimming, I get soreness in my core and legs. This is definitely a new muscle group I'm not used to have pain in. I've been taking some tylenol to help with my pain. Not sure if I like this enough to go back. I stopped going to the gym because I specifically didn't want large shoulders. IDK why when I work out, my shoulders just get bigger and bigger. My torso is a XS/S but my shoulders are an M. I'm absolute terrified of heights as well... So...maybe this isnt the sport for me. It's fun though! I'd go again, just wouldn't get a gym membership for it.

Not to try and change your mind, but for those who are curious, here are some great boardgames at or around the $20 price point:

Forbidden Island

Race for the Galaxy

The Resistance

Innovation

For Sale

Roll Through the Ages

Glory to Rome

Citadels

Acquire

Qwirkle

Bohnanza

u/WindupBot · 12 pointsr/Parenting

Forbidden Island is great for kids and cooperative. Castle Panic might be a bit advanced for him at 6, but, again, it's a co-op game, so you can help him out. He could probably play King of Tokyo. There's always Hey, That's My Fish!. Also, pretty much any board game by HABA

u/LiliOfTheVeil · 12 pointsr/Pathfinder_RPG

Or loves playing Boss Monster

Most of your prices are way too high. They're still used games, you can't sell them at new prices.

Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of Ashardalon

  • Your price - $40

  • Amazon - $41

Chronicle of the Godslayer - Storm of Souls -
Rise of Vigil - Immortal Heroes

  • Your price - $20/$20/$20/$15
  • Amazon - $29/$30/$30/$22

    Munchkin

  • Your price - $9
  • Amazon - $17

    Munchkin Impossible

  • Your price - $9
  • Amazon - $24

    Battlestar Galactica

  • Your price - $25
  • Amazon - $37

    Dungeon Twister

  • Your price - $40
  • Amazon - A lot

I'm getting tired of this so I'm going to skip ones that are good deals...

    Carcassonne: The Catapult

  • Your price - $10
  • Amazon - $15

    Van Helsing

  • Your price - $20
  • Amazon - $19

    Zombie Fluxx

  • Your price - $9
  • Amazon - $12

    Dresden Files

  • Your price - $30/$30
  • Amazon - $37/$28

There are a few games that would be good deals, but most of them need to be re-priced. To make it worth people's time to buy from you then you should really price $20 under Amazon (for bigger games) if you want them to pay shipping. Then it'll even out to only $10-ish less than Amazon for them.

Soooo over the past few years, my husband has bought a lot of two player games. Since I think most games are designed for more players than that, I wanted to put in some suggestions because we have found some really great ones!

  1. Codenames: Duet - this was a gift from my cousin to my husband last year for Christmas. Wasn't sure about it when she asked me about it...but we play it ALL THE TIME. It's a cooperative game (I'm not super competitive), challenging but not mindnumbingly so, and there are so many different combinations of words being used that I doubt it will ever get stale.

  2. Roll For It! - another hit! You roll your dice and try to match them to the patterns on the cards. Different points values are allotted to each card and your goal is to get to 40 points. Fairly easy to pick up. It actually pretty fun with two people but can be played with up to four (and if you buy two sets, up to 8). It's also very portable for vacations!

A few others we like but don't play as often

  3. Sushi Go - a little complicated to learn but there's a demo on youtube that is helpful. The cards are super cute!

  4. Jaipur - we've only played this once or twice because it takes a little longer/requires a little more strategy but I really enjoyed it. I think this one is exclusively for two players

  5. Quiddler - We just broke this one open a few weeks ago so only played once. This is more of a word game combined with a strategy game. Again, takes a little bit to get the hang of it....but I think we will be playing this one a lot too.

Depending on her playing level, a great competitive entry point would be the Keldeo vs. Rayquaza Battle Arena Decks. It has two decks, so she could play/learn with her parents or a friend. It has numerous trainer cards that are seen in competitive play (VS Seeker, Professor Sycamore, N, Lysandre, Ultra Ball), so once she "outgrows" the template decks, she could take those trainers and build a deck of her own.

At the moment Amazon already offers the set with $6 off -- it's a great deal. https://smile.amazon.com/Battle-Arena-Decks-Rayquaza-Keldeo/dp/B01GT1CY7K

The 2015 Core Set Clash pack has a green and a blue deck, and are designed so you combine them into a green/blue deck.

It's a great game and I hope she enjoys it!

u/LookAtMeNoww · 8 pointsr/pkmntcg

Battle Arena Deck are good options, as they have strategies and actually some viable cards. Gives you a base to start with and can be upgraded from there. Unfortunately the newest iteration of them was just canceled, but you should still be able to find the Keldo vs Rayquaza or Black vs White Kyurem in stores and online.

Hmm. Official here is a strong word. Ales Kot is the writer of that comic and to my knowledge, he was privy of no additional information than we are. It's more like a well funded Fan comic.

There's the Artbook, The Vinyl, and the boardgame.

If you just want stuff similar to BB I know of a couple.

u/groundshop · 6 pointsr/lanparty

The lans I go to are too small to really bear much advice to you on the questions you listed.

Where I can provide some insight is in the types of table top games you should consider. Lots of folks (in the lan community) have been exposed to traditional pen/paper stuff like DnD. If you're looking to spice things up a bit, consider trying out some of the modern board games that are out. I'm sure some of your attendees will have already been exposed to these, but for the rest that haven't, they'll probably strike at least an interest or a few questions. BoardGameGeek has a list of the top board games out right now, some of which you might not have heard of. Settlers of Catan, Dominion, Race for the Galaxy, Carcassonne are some of the most popular. They're flashy, they're interesting, and they're usually under an hour (if not usually under 45 min) to play. They're an up and coming type of gaming that's spreading fast among the table-top/CCG/comics folks.

Edit: In retrospect, I kinda seem like a fanboy for this post, but holy shit they're really awesome games.

Sushi Go Party -- Amazon link

u/antonjg · 6 pointsr/pkmntcg

oh ok, definetely check out the rayqauza battle arena deck right here ---> Here , there about 20$ and they come with 2 ready to play deck, these have competitive trainer cards and there good for new players, if you can get 2, that would be ideal because then you can combine them and build even better decks. The decks Come with N, Sycamore and VS Seekers which are all competitive and expensive cards so it is a pretty good deal if your just starting out. Hopefully this helps. :)

u/I_Hate_Robots · 6 pointsr/pkmntcg

Battle arena decks. Always battle arena decks. It's two decks that are perfectly balanced against each other so that you and a friend can learn together. After that, they've got a healthy count of competitively viable (if not Standard legal) cards.

Once you've outgrown them, it's time to move on to singles.

u/solidsnake2085 · 6 pointsr/bloodborne

I guess technically a card game but yes!

Bloodborne Card Game

u/Overwelm · 6 pointsr/DungeonsAndDragons

If you search on Amazon or stop by your local shop you can find them, they're basically the spell info but put on a card. It has casting time, components, level, effect, etc all printed on them. There are some official cards as well as some 3rd party cards that have different art or stuff on them. They're a nice resource for spell reference if you have the $ for them (they're not super expensive) but they don't have anything more than what you'd find in the books/online.

Amazon link is to the Arcane spellcasters set (sorc/wizard/warlock/bard), but they have Divine sets, or even class specific sets.

u/schm0 · 5 pointsr/Parenting

I would add "Hey, That's My Fish!" to the list, and it's cheap, too! :)

u/the_lion_tamer · 5 pointsr/EDH

I found these on amazon, it says in the Q&A that with some effort you can clean them off after using dry erase.

Monopoly Deal is a completely different card-based game from Monopoly. https://www.amazon.com/Hasbro-B0965-Monopoly-Deal-Card/dp/B00NQQTZCO

When we play, we just flip the deck and start from the bottom.

u/SneakyRL · 5 pointsr/DnD

I purchased these for my wizard and love them. They don't include some of the newer spells founds in Xanathar's guide (I purchased that deck too but they are separate) but they'll have 95% of the spells you'll need for your son. It includes wizard, warlock, and sorcerer spells.

They do also make decks for monsters but honestly as a DM you can always just bookmark the pages before the session to help reference them quicker!

u/guyincorporated · 4 pointsr/magicTCG

I'm assuming by 30-card starter pack, you're referring to one of those promo decks they give out at cons with commons and uncommons in them and a picture of a planeswalker on the deck box? If so, it's insane to lock into mono-blue just because of that. Especially now that you've purchased an entire box of product. If you're getting hung up about the lack of lands, get them from your friends that keep stomping you, or just head down to the local store and get a bunch for a dollar, or spring for a Deckbuilder's Toolkit.

u/Dr_ZoidbergHomeowner · 4 pointsr/magicTCG

Here or at WalMart. Check near the collectible cards (will probably be by the registers). Target may have them also but I cannot say for sure. Have fun getting addicted to cardboard!

u/mipakr · 4 pointsr/boardgames

Hey That's My Fish - $11.99 - 2-4 - 20 min

Tiny footprint (small hex ice chunks and tiny penguins).

Your job seems simple: race across a random arrangement of icy fish deposits with a colony of up to four penguins, as you attempt to seize the most fish. But watch out! Competing penguins will try to block you off while the ice floe around you shrinks away. Grab the best fish and outmaneuver your opponents to ensure victory. Whichever player’s penguins collect the most fish by the end of the game is the winner!

u/telnetrestart · 4 pointsr/latterdaysaints

Farkle, Killer Bunnies, Munchkin, Netrunner, x-wing, jaiper (super fun 2 player game), Guillotine, Small World...we can't think of any other ones at this time.

She isn't a nerd or anything, but she really likes playing games together. It brings us closer (even though the loser usually wants to strangle the winner for a few minutes after the game). Lots of "I WANT A REMATCH" and "THAT WAS PURE LUCK" is said around our dinner table.

u/maximpactgames · 4 pointsr/boardgames

Love Letter - Ultra fun game for 2 to 4 players, super small, super simple, but tons of replayability. One of my favorite games ever, and a hit with everyone. Currently $8 on amazon.

Coup- Super basic social deduction game, tons of fun for not a lot of money. More complicated than Love Letter, but not very difficult. The hardest part about teaching a younger kid this game is the idea that you can (and should) lie to your friends. Currently $9 on amazon.

Red 7 - This is a small 2-4 player game, super fun, super simple. Currently $9 on amazon

Basically, you can get all three of these for ~$25.

u/SlappyBag9 · 4 pointsr/magicTCG

$22.50 and could have Super savers shipping on amazon:

>What makes roll-and-move an inherently bad concept?

You literally could replace the entire Monopoly board with a deck of cards and instead of Roll & Move just take cards off the top and deal with them. You might call it Monopoly Deal and it might achieve the same thoughtspace in 15 minutes and reduce Monopoly into a slightly charming filler game.

And before you ask, I've played Monopoly Deal, it still isn't my thing, but it's superior to the board game.

u/SexualCannibalism · 4 pointsr/Gifts

You could get her a r ally hilarious game like Exploding Kittens to play when she meets new people? It's a simple, quick, hilarious game, and even just reading the cards gets a laugh. There's a NSFW and a clean edition, so make sure you choose wisely!

u/darc_oso · 4 pointsr/boardgames

My list would include a variation of games

Code Names - $16

Sushi Go - $10

7 Wonders - $26

Tsuro - $19

Castles of Burgundy - $27

Total: $98

Explanations:

First, I want to preface these selections: our play group varies in size from week to week with anywhere from 4-10 players averaging 5-6. So, we often get caught "splitting the party." That's fine at times, but sometimes, we all want to jump in on one game together because splitting up feels bad man^TM since we're all there to socialize in addition to playing games.

As such, I wanted to include games that ran the gamut and for the most part games that scaled well from 2-X players.

First, Code Names. Now, we've played this game so many times, we actually purchased the expansion Code Names Deep Cover which is a fun variant which adds tons of more playability. This is the go-to "party" game as, for our group, Cards Against Humanity has grown a bit stale. At least it hits the table much less frequently than in years past. Code Names is easy to teach, easy to understand and difficult enough for some of your more entrenched board gamers. In general, I find this a great starter to transition from your Milton Bradley games everyone knows (and hates) into board games that offer sustenance.

Secondly, I offer Sushi Go (cheating a bit here as you'll probably have to buy a couple copies for larger groups or just get Sushi Go Party). Sushi Go is our groups go-to game to introduce games that use a drafting mechanic and to teach that board games can be cute, fun, and delightful while also requiring strategy, maths, and a bit of hope (our group tends to dislike dice-rolling games so for the most part, we stick to games where we can mostly "control" our own fates - YMMV). This game is super quick, so you don't get bogged down at the table for hours. I feel for new board gamers, quicker games are a MUST as many people may not be able to handle the length many of our Beloveds require.

7 Wonders comes next. We tend to introduce this game right after Sushi Go as the mechanics are super similar and the newer players feel like they already know what's going on for the most part. There will be questions, there will be some confusion and oversight, but this game follows easily and feels like a natural step up from Sushi Go and gets players right into the mix of heartier board games. Oh, and I could personally play 7 Wonders every week, especially with all the options offered through the expansions Cities, Leaders, and Tower. The interchangeability of these expansions has kept this game on our table long past many others and continues to bring it back. Again though, YMMV as we all have different tastes.

Tsuro, our board game palatte cleanser. This is another quick game which offers a lot of replayabiliity with minimal rules learning. Aside from those positives, the artwork is what sent this board game over the top for me. I am mesmerized by the board, the tiles, and the pieces each time we open this. This game offers a quick break between your heavier meeple-laiden board games so even after we've surpassed "newb" status, we often come back to this.

Castles of Burgundy I included as a final game because ultimately, we need a game with a strong theme and wonderful mechanics which offer replayability from a more traditional Euro point of view. This game really surprised me. I loved it the first time we played it, and though it may not hit the table but once every other month due to time constraints, it always feels like reuniting with an old friend. It offers a setup for further Euro games and sets the scene on what's really out there in weightier board games. I know there could be other games that fit this description, but at the price, this game is amazing for what it offers.

And that's the list. I know there are many criticisms of these games and I don't devalue those. All my favorites have points in them where they fall a little flat at times, or don't elicit the enjoyment I thought they might, but many times, it's usually my perception and frame of mind. I can often come back months later with renewed enjoyment for them, so trust me, I know there are imperfections; I just choose to ignore them for the post. These games, while some may take a bit longer to learn, offer a great springboard into board games and offer the new player a slow wade into the pool without feeling too slow or drab as one might feel with something like Settlers of Catan. Will I stand by this opinion in 5 or 10 years? We'll see.

u/RedCornSyrup · 4 pointsr/PS4

It's cheap too

It plays like Cutthroat Caverns, a semi-cooperative dungeon crawl.

There's a similar one called What Do You Meme? that is actually really fun to play. Way better than Cards Against Humanity.

For lands you can just buy a deck builder kit if you are really desperate for them. Or alternately you can buy them for usually 5 - 10 cents each like here.

edit: doing some quick math buying 24 of each land at .10 would be $12.00. At which point I would just pick up a deck builder's kit for $20 that comes with 20 of each land, 4 boosters, and some other random cards. Here is a link to it at amazon. Seems like a better value for the money.

Zombie Fluxx is one of my newest and favorite tabletop games. One evening my mom and I decided to play. Now my mom doesn't really like playing with the zombies in the deck, but since I really wanted to, we did. From now on my mom should want to play with the zombies in the deck, because thanks to those pesky zombies she won the game. She had at least 1 of every zombie you could have and thanks to the "Zombie Jamboree" goal, where you had to have a single zombie, a pair of zombies, a trio of zombies and a quartet of zombies, she won. I gave her such a hard time after that.

Thanks for the contest!

Edit: Tabletop games are my newest addiction, but I also love a good computer game. But no really good stories from playing video games comes to mind right now.

u/ann_nonymous · 3 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

My brother is a huge huge fan of the Walking Dead. He has roped me into it and I find I enjoy it too. My family loves playing games. Our favorite game is [Zombie Fluxx] (http://www.amazon.com/Looney-Labs-033LOO-Zombie-Fluxx/dp/1929780664/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367622912&sr=8-1&keywords=zombie+fluxx) It is a lot of fun and has a great zombie twist. Race for the Galaxy is currently ~25 bucks, which is much cheaper than it usually is. It's been compared to games like San Juan and Puerto Rico.

u/Sinnocent · 3 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I would love to get this for my husband. He always talks about getting back to playing MTG and we're always looking for games that just he and I can play. We own over 70 board games but many of them need more than 2 players, so this would be great for us to be able to spend some game time with one another but without the hassle of set-up, needing lots of space, and/or needing a large amount of time.

He's been having some ups and downs lately and his birthday is coming up in May. I'd love to surprise him with this. He takes care of me wholeheartedly (even when he's frustrated about it) and I can't ever thank him enough for that (because I have many medical problems and he is always there for me). Thanks for the opportunity.

u/kintexu2 · 3 pointsr/magicTCG

No matter where you go, you won't get much for them. 1000 count boxes go for less than 20 on amazon (and that says it has rares and occasional mythics) and ebay. so you might get 20-25 bucks if you're lucky. If you throw it on ebay with the bidding started low I expect you would get someone to finish it around 15-20 most likely.

EDIT: places like starcitygames also buy bulk, but I do not know the rates.

u/wolfkin · 3 pointsr/boardgames

oh this is perfect. An excellent exercise.

$100 to buy games on Amazon with a newbie who has specific needs.

Ok so we're looking to minimize card games, adult players, 2+

  1. Alhambra - $30 - it's a fun game and it gets our requirements right out of the way. it's more than just a card game there's a board, there's tiles to play with, A nice amount of physicality. it's new player friendly and works with 2 players.

  2. Last Night on Earth - $45 - Again going hard on the requirements here. It may be totally cheesy and it might not last a long time in your collection but if you're gonna get this game better to get it when you're young in the hobby so you'll have the most fun. It's team based but works with one player teams. It's a zombie game with a lot of mini zombie figurines to play with. It's a lot of fun to play with.

  3. Blueprints - $30 - I want a dice game in your library and in my head the first game is King of Tokyo which is an excellent game but I don't know how useful it is for two players. Blueprints is easy to learn fun to play and performs well with two players.

    -------
At this point I'm about $5 over maybe a little more because i think i rounded down a few. I might have been able to switch a few things to get more games in but I wanted quality games that minimized or compensated for cards. Plus all of these games play 2 or more pretty wel.

    -------

    Honorable Mentions:

Jaipur - $35 - For a couple I think one of the best beginner games is Jaipur. It's a two player card game with a welcoming theme that's easy to learn and yet when you play it's as difficult as your opponent makes it. The games aren't long so even when you want to try and experiment with headgames you're not investing too much into it.

Looney Pyramids aka IceDice - $9-15 - Now obviously the one to get is the Ice Dice. It's two "stashes" for $15 vs 1 for $10. Ideally you want three stashes and you can play the most excellent "Space Chess" like game Binary Homeworlds

Bananagrams - $15 - Bananagrams is an excellent party game if you have the tablespace. Honestly this is the singular reason I haven't played my copy yet. It's light it's fluffy, it's fun.

Splendor - $30 - Splendor is an excellent game. Nothing feels good as holding the poker chips in this game. It's a nice strategy game with a dash of tactical planning if you want. You could substitute it for Blueprints and still have excellent picks. Very fun quick game. But it is card heavy.

Word ARound - $15 - Now most people probably haven't heard of this charmer. It's cheap, it's probably best as a party game. I happen to like the look of it but no doubt it'll burn out as you become familiar with the words a bit.

    -------
    Race for the Galaxy

I happen to love that game. If you're ever stuck may I recommend this awesome video tutorial.

    Modern Table Gamer

Also don't forget you can play online at BoardGameArena. Some people might be recommending Roll for the Galaxy the new spin off game. I haven't played it yet but I found the Miami Dice episode about it to be very enlightening. Both Tom and Sam speak highly of the game especially in comparison to the original game.

    -------
    Ticket to Ride

Excellent game I hear for two players you want the Switzerland/India map

    -------
    Agricola

I think this might be a bit heavy for new players

    -------
    Eldrich Horror/Castles of Burgundy

While I have played CoB i don't know it well enough to judge it. I didn't have a great time with my play but it was just one time. I hear lovely things about Eldrich especially compared to Arkham.

BW Tokens lists can shift depending on your local meta-game, so if you're interested in the deck you can invest in many of the "flex" cards that can rotate out depending on what you're looking to beat. Check out primers for BW Tokens here and here, and check out some of the decklists that have placed in Grand Prix and Qualifier events. It's a deck whose list can shift quite a bit beyond the key cards.

Your quickest route to build BW Tokens will be to pick up the Modern Event Deck. It has most of the staples you'll need plus some good starting sideboard tech. Here are the individual prices of those cards as of this morning, and you can check out how it does against some other decks in the meta by reading the recent "Modern Hero" series of articles. Even with minor modifications, the deck has game against a lot of other things in the format. The MSRP is $75 U.S., but you can often find it online for around $50 U.S. With the remaining budget you have, you can easily invest in more expensive staples like [[Thoughtseize]], a few Planeswalkers, and a play set of [[Godless Shrine]].

The good thing about BW Tokens is that you're in colours that give you access to some of the hatiest hate cards in the format, so your sideboard will really shine. [[Stony Silence]], [[Rest in Peace]], [[Rule of Law]], [[Oblivion Ring]], and [[Torpor Orb]] can all be picked up on the cheap, as can more hand disruption like [[Sin Collector]] or [[Duress]]. Things like [[Aven Mindcensor]], [[Leyline of Sanctity]], or [[Auriok Champion]] are more expensive, but still within your budget as you only need about two of them for the sideboard.

One last thing to mention: fetchlands are often a huge barrier for entry in to the format. While they can definitely give you an edge in competitive play, a play set of [[Marsh Flats]] isn't necessary when starting out with this particular deck. You already have access to cheaper sources of mana fixing, and you can always pick them up later if you plan on playing the deck in a larger competitive event.

u/Magic_Viking7 · 3 pointsr/ModernMagic

The best thing to buy with $100 is the Modern Event Deck. It can be found on Amazon and is ~100 dollars. It's probably the most cost-effective thing you can get, and while it's not super competitive as-is, it can be easily upgraded over time.

u/pjabrony · 3 pointsr/mylittlepony

If you have a friend who's really into Monopoly, try suggesting Monopoly Deal. It has much the same appeal but it plays in 15 minutes and is fun.

There's also the World Championship decks which aren't legal for competitive use but you can just play for fun.

They only existed recently. There exists spell cards now that are the same spells from the players handbook with all the relevant information on a card. Makes referencing your spells really easy.

Here are the folders I was talking about as well. They're nice because wet erase pens work on them which make them great for tracking health without having a bunch of erase marks on your character sheets.

Hey dude, I am a newbie myself and after alot of chatter with a store here in the UK they all prety much advised on the 2011 deck builders kit that I got from them http://www.amazon.co.uk/Magic-Deck-Builders-Toolkit-Board/dp/0786955651/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312813520&sr=8-1 I have prety much got a deck of each colour less a few lands but it comes with everything!

So I have just been messing with this and working out what I prefer colour wise a few days in so far and love it!

u/jawston · 2 pointsr/magicTCG

Buy a Deck Builders Tool Kit It's designed for new players looking to get into the game and deck building, it also comes with how to play instructions and tips fold out. Also if you're willing to put the money into it I'd suggest grabbing a Fat Pack, comes with a nice holding case and life counter dice in addition to the cards and lands.

The cards from both will be enough to keep you busy for months.

u/caffiend2 · 2 pointsr/magicTCG

If you are going to start buying cards, I cannot recommend buying a fat pack enough. Having a list of every card in the set is very helpful not only for learning terms, but also for planning card combos. It's the most cost efficient way to get 9 packs of boosters, a spin down life counter die, 100 land cards, and a neat box.

Also, for a staring player, the deck builders tool kit is a nice selection of very useful cards.

u/darkjedisa · 2 pointsr/magicTCG

Go to walmart and buy a deck builders toolkit

It really is a good value and will give you everything you need to make various decks.

If you ever decide to take your game to the next level you may consider playing "standard". This is the format that is most played in magic and consist of cards printed within the current block and the previous one. Right now "standard" decks are only going to have cards printed in "Scars of Mirrodin" Block from last year: Scars of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Besieged, and New Phyrexia. and the present "Inninstrad" Block: Inninstrad, Dark Ascension, and Avacyn Restored - Releases next month

In the summer Wizards releases their yearly "Core" set. With last summers being called M12 - Magic 2012
The Magic: The Gathering game expands every year, introducing new worlds filled with deadly perils, ancient adversaries, and fantastic new adventures. At its center is the Magic core set, the game in its purest form: evocative spells, menacing creatures, and infinite possibilities. But even at its core, the experience is ever-changing. The Magic 2012 core set boldly continues this tradition.

Each cycle normally starts around September so expect Scars of Mirrodin to "cycle" out and for Return to Ravinca to "cycle" in.

Feel free to post here if you have any questions.

Something like this

u/TemptCiderFan · 2 pointsr/gaming

Go console. That budget is absolutely out of scope for PCs, especially with the current GPU market thanks to cryptocurrency inflation. For that price, you could easily get a dozen modern consoles...

That said, I would poll your fellow members and see if there's any interest in retro gaming. Grab a Wii or WiiU (or two) and some Mario Party, Mario Kart, etc titles. Grab a PS2 and some older fighting games.

Even if you have 20-25 active members, not everyone has to be playing games at the same time. You can set up games tournaments and rotating split-screen games.

Also: Board games. Set up a table so that you can get a board game going, and maybe invest in copies of Settlers of Catan, Axis and Allies, Risk, Blokus/Blokus Trigon, or even a couple sets each of Chess, Go, Stratego, etc.

Edit: Someone mentioned Magic The Gathering. If you're going to invest in that for the club, just go ahead and go HAM: You can buy randomized lots of 1000 commons for $14. Four of those bad boys will allow you to make up a shitload of pre-made decks of more or less equal utility, so you can do mystery tournaments.

If you want to get a lot of cards for cheap than I suggest Amazon. There are tons of singles as well as huge bulk buys like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0028QC50C/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1418523546&sr=8-1

The other option would be to get two smaller games, in which case I would recommend Jaipur and Sushi Go!. Jaipur is a strictly two-player trading game, and Sushi Go is a larger-group drafting game. Both are amazing games, and this way, your sister can have something to play with her husband and something to play with her group.

u/TelrikRoch · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I suggest Boss Monster! It's like a nostalgia trip to the 8-bit era of RPGs in card-game form! Only, you're playing the boss monster instead of the heroes. It's for 2-4 people, and games wrap up in about 15-20 minutes as well. Hero cards are drawn and piled into the middle of the playing area, and then go into the dungeons based on what 'treasures' are in each dungeon tile. It's awesome waiting and seeing which traps they'll run into, how many heroes don't make it, etc.

u/sirlost · 2 pointsr/Tacoma

7 wonders is super fun once you get the hang of it.

another fun game that i just recently played is Boss Monster. the rounds go pretty quick usually and it's pretty easy to pick up how to play.

u/pcguy89 · 2 pointsr/Magicdeckbuilding

Most of the cost of the deck is coming from those four Scrublands, which may very well be fake, depending on the seller.

If you'd like something more contemporary in the same colors, I'd like to suggest the Modern Event Deck:

https://www.amazon.com/Magic-Gathering-2014-MODERN-Event/dp/B00IR2W4WA

This can be found selling for 85-95 dollars and is overall more powerful than the deck in the picture you have posted. There's also almost no chance that the product is counterfeit, assuming you're buying it brand new.

u/Shineplasma64 · 2 pointsr/ModernMagic

Copypasta #3 from an answer I gave to a similar thread:
You could pick up a 2014 Modern Event Deck (B/W Tokens). Add a couple Sorin, Solemn Visitors to go alongside the Elspeth the deck comes with, 2 more Inquisition of Kozileks, 2-3 Fatal Push, another Path and trade the Shrine of Loyal Legions for Secure The Wastes and suddenly you have a pretty viable deck. Tokens has a great matchup against Death's Shadow, just about any midrange deck, Burn and Affinity. The Tron matchup is godawful, and playing against combo decks can be interesting, but you could easily go 3-1 with this deck if you play enough to understand how matchups against the meta decks work. People seem to overlook Tokens most of the time, but when it comes to building a budget modern deck I don't think it gets much better to be honest. It is also much more flexible and much more fun to play than the next best budget deck choice, which would likely be Burn. There are tons of strong possible curve outs and a lot of disruption, which makes it very versatile. Comes with a playable sideboard, too. If you want to upgrade later on down the road, its pretty easy to get Marsh Flats, Godless Shrines, RIPs, Stony Silence and Thoughtseizes. 90 bucks on Amazon. Also comes with some really nice sleeves and a deckbox if you don't have one for it already. https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00IR2W4WA/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=new
PS: Many of the cards, esp the manabase, hand disruption and sideboard can be used in other W/B/X Midrange decks or Hatebears, if you decide to go all-in on the format later on.

Do you have any interest in playing magic at all?

Because if you do, you could be the coolest girlfriend in the world by purchasing a gift for yourself! (You can tell him it's for him if you want.)

There is a magic product called a Clash Pack. It comes with two decks of roughly equal power level that are designed to be played against each other. It is intended as an introductory product. It also includes instructions on how to combine the decks together to make a single stronger deck.

Here is the link to it on amazon for $22: http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Gathering-Card-Game-2015/dp/B00KXY3NS4

If you decide that this is something you want to do, then before you give him the gift, You should download the Magic 2015: Duels of the Planeswalkers for Android or iOS (Free to download). Go through the tutorial and you will know the basics of how to play. Then, your boyfriend will think that you are a quick learner when he teaches you to play!

Anyway, it would make for a few fun hours/date night activity, and even if you don't continue to play yourself, you would come away with a better understanding of this hobby your boyfriend likes. (If you do end up doing this, please follow up and let us know how it went!)

As far as pre-constructed decks, I'd recommend Keldeo vs. Rayquaza. That set comes with many good trainer cards that can be used for building other decks as well: https://www.amazon.com/Battle-Arena-Decks-Rayquaza-Keldeo/dp/B01GT1CY7K

If you're up for some reading, I recommend taking a look at the beginner deck building page in the sidebar: https://www.reddit.com/r/pkmntcg/wiki/beginnerdecks

The core trainers mentioned on the page are cheaper than what it says. Current price per card on tcgplayer:

0.11 Shauna

0.48 N

0.16 Ultra Ball

0.05 Switch

0.14 Rescue Stretcher

0.10 Energy Retrieval

0.29 Lysandre

Most of the other trainers should be cheaper by now too. Once you have some basic trainers I'd recommend choosing some of your favorite pokemon and building a deck around them (maybe keep them within the same type + colorless to start with).

Also don't worry about staying within the current tournament rulesets of standard / expanded - it would only serve as an arbitrary restriction on cards played for casual play.

To get some ideas on what's available, you could browse these pages for released cards:

Sets: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pok%C3%A9mon_Trading_Card_Game_expansions

Trainers: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_English_Trainer_cards

Energy: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Energy_card_(TCG)

Though for pokemon I'd recommend just searching for the pokemon name on tcgplayer because they have listings from every set. Usually newer expansions are cheaper due to availability unless it's a popular card in the current rotation.

One last side note, depending on the theme deck it can be cheaper to look up the card list and buy the deck as singles if you don't need the coin / markers.

Buying Pikachu Power as singles from tcgplayer for example:

3 pikachu = 0.12

2 raichu = 1.74

1 magneton = 0.64

3 magnemite = 0.21

2 electabuzz = 0.12

2 voltorb = 0.16

2 beedrill = 0.24

3 kakuna = 0.18

3 weedle = 0.21

2 metapod = 0.12

3 caterpie = 0.24

2 tangela = 0.14

2 doduo = 0.12

1 energy retrieval = 0.10

1 evosoda = 0.38

1 pokeball = 0.04

1 pokemon center lady = 0.47

1 pokemon fan club = 0.15

1 professor oak's hint = 0.06

2 professor's letter = 0.20

1 revive = 0.07

1 switch = 0.05

2 tierno = 0.24

9 lightning energy = 0.63

9 grass energy = 0.63

total = $7.26
(without grouping for shipping)

u/vandergus · 2 pointsr/pkmntcg

5$ would get you a 50 card bulk lot on ebay but nothing coherent enough to be considered a playable deck. You can get the Sun and Moon theme decks for about $10 a piece but they have limited long term playability. The best value is the Keldeo v Rayquaza Battle Arena Deck but you'll have to expand your budget if you want 6 decks.

u/Mujera · 2 pointsr/pkmntcg

Anything from China is fake. DO NOT buy any cards from China.

What is your son wanting to? Collect? Play competitively? Both?

If he wants to collect, I'm not really sure if SM is the best way to start. The set features 20+ secret rares (usually 1 per 2 booster boxes) and each SR can go from $15-$30 each, depending on which Pokemon.

In order to get the best deal for collecting, its only two words: BUY SINGLES. If you try and collect sets with only booster packs/boxes/etc., you are probably going to spend triple or quadruple the amount you would spend on just buying singles from the set, and keep in mind Sun and Moon costs around $300-$450 to complete it.

If he wants to play competitively, I'm gonna be that guy and say that you should buy a Keldeo vs Rayquaza Battle Arena Decks. The decks include most of the trainer staples you'll need for a deck, and Keldeo-EX and Rayquaza-EX aren't bad EXs in the Expanded format.

u/SheriffCrazy · 2 pointsr/ptcgo

If your willing to spend a little money (less tha $5) may I suggest buying the code for "Battle Arena Decks: Keldeo vs Raquaza"

It comes with 2 pre made decks. The Keldeo one is actually quite good and both decks great for starters.

It contains 4 meta EX Pokemon, several meta trainer cards, and other meta Pokemon.

There is one caviat it only works in expanded format. Not theme!

It's a very good start and well worth the money! Heck buy the IRL for you and your son and use the code it comes with online!

Here is an Amazon link:
https://www.amazon.com/Battle-Arena-Decks-Rayquaza-Keldeo/dp/B01GT1CY7K

You could search eBay and find the code alone fairly easily.

I was playing Out of the Abyss last year as a wizard and early on got a spell book or two. I had the spell cards you can buy and quickly had a big stack of cards.

But it wasn't game-breaking at all. You can only prepare a certain number of spells and I rarely changed which ones I prepared. Most of that stack was never used in the entire campaign.

u/calyphon · 2 pointsr/DMAcademy

I don't have any experience DMing for young players, grain of salt and all that.

I would definitely recommend using spell cards.

https://www.dnd-spells.com/

http://hardcodex.ru/

https://www.amazon.com/73915-Spellbook-Cards-Arcane-Deck/dp/B01MRVJ1TB

You could simplify casting rules by letting the players cast each of their spells once per encounter. Explain that playing a spell card takes it away for a while. Level 1 Wizard with 6 spells? Make 6 spell cards, and tell the player that after using one of those cards, they have to flip it upside down. You could even let them flip up a previously cast spell card as a reward for doing something in the game. I imagine seeing the cards right in front of the player, seeing them be turned up and down, would help a lot with visualizing resource management, which even for adult players can be overwhelming.

You could also use a spell points system. There are a couple of ways to do it, but you basically say that instead of having x number of Level 1 slots and y number of Level 2 slots, you instead have x(1)+y(2) total "points" to spend on spells. You can represent points with poker chips or costume jewels or something. If a player has access to spells of both levels, show them how the "more expensive" (Level 2) spell costs 2 points or gems or chips, while the less expensive one (Level 1) costs 1. If these kids play video games this singular resource pool can be thought of as a mana/energy bar, rather than an abstract number of different size slots.

If its a short campaign and the rules are being used in a more cinematic sense rather than for gritty balancing purposes, I'm sure anything you choose will work just fine. The main reason balance matters is so one player doesn't feel significantly less impactful upon the action than the others. I think it'll be fine to do away with strict slots if you make sure to let each player have a moment in the spotlight, and reward any creativity (which, based on your post, I'm sure will not be a problem for you).

Spell slots are limited in number because they unbalance things in the favor of the caster, especially when compared to a low level ranger or fighter making a single attack per turn. Try to let the martial classes do something a bit out of the box or extraordinary whenever they think of it, to help them keep up with the wizard casting Burning Hands or Sleep every round.

TL;DR- The spirit of the game is more important than the rules, so just make sure each player gets something cool to do and the rules won't matter so much.

Um, I believe they were just from Amazon.

I think these are the ones.

u/CriticalGameMastery · 2 pointsr/DungeonsAndDragons

You will run into issues with licensing on most websites unless you are cool with paying for the tools on: dndbeyond.com

You will have access on some sites like orcpub2.com to the SRD spells (ones allowed for public use without purchasing usage rights) but you’ll be limited.

My best recommendation is to buy a bunch of index cards (color ones preferably) and fill them out with the spell details.

You can also purchase spell cards for most of the spell lists off amazon:
73915 D&D: Spellbook Cards: Arcane Deck https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MRVJ1TB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_FEe.AbXZH3Y7K

... but I hate spending money so I just use index cards :)

amazon has em for a bit cheaper than you would find them. But stores like Walmart and target usually have a few. My local card stores don't usually carry them, just fat packs.

u/snowbucket · 1 pointr/magicTCG

do you have friends who play? usually people who have been playing will have troves of extra cards they dont want. But if you are looking for pre built ones there are those. Also what i find great are thrift stores. I found cards fa dayz there.

but your best bet is the deck builders toolkit
it comes with a bunch of cards and lands to learn how to build your own decks

The starter decks are a good start but they usually don't have enough cards in them, and too many land. This is a good thing to get as well:
https://www.amazon.com/Magic-Gathering-Deck-Builders-Toolkit/dp/0786955651

It will have random cards in it from all colors, so he'll be able to tweak and customize the decks to his liking.

And yea.. this can be an expensive hobby.. but it doesn't have to be. If he is able to work I'd say time to get a job if you want more than this!

It's a kids' game from Germany, but don't worry, the instructions come in English. It's easy and fun. You have a bunch of ice flow hexagonal tiles that have either 1, 2, or 3 fish on them. They are all laid out, then you place your penguins on tiles. On your turn, you move one penguin in any of the six directions in straight line until you choose to stop, run into an empty space or another penguin. You get to keep the tile you left at the beginning of each turn. When you can't move anywhere, that penguin is out of the game, and when all the tiles are claimed, the game is over. Player with the most fish, not tiles, wins.

The second time we played this game, our 7yo managed to cut most of us off on a small ice flow, leaving the rest of the tiles for him.

It is very clear you are the last chupacabra to freely roam the Mexican wilderness. So misunderstood throughout your life. So you ate a few goats...whats the big deal? You are lonely. You resent the humans for ostricizing you. Damn humans! Over the years this resentment led to a few delicious human snacks. Unfortunately this led to further ostracism by the humans. Of course this meant you needed to eat more. And so the vicious cycle is destined to eternally play out over and over again. u/TwoToedTerror · 1 pointr/boardgames

Troyes (pronounced "twah") is a great worker placement-esque game that is great for 2 players, up to 4. The theme might bore you until you start playing, it's intuitive and great for any number of players.

Jaipur is only for 2 players, but is inexpensive and tons of fun.

I don't have anything that perfectly fits that criteria, but think that having a diverse collection for different numbers of players is the solution rather than one game to rule them all.

u/poloxamer · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Thanks!

Okay, so I am a huge board game advocate and I will always, ALWAYS, offer up a board game solution whenever the chance arises to do so. Your dilemma is one that can definitely be addressed with the proper games. As such, I have a few very engaging, fun, and easy to learn two-player games for you:

First up is Patchwork by my favorite board game designer, Uwe Rosenberg. It's a game about collecting cloth patches and adding them to a patchwork quilt. If you enjoyed the video game Tetris and liked the spatial puzzle aspect of it, you'll love this game.

Next, we have Jaipur. This is a game about acquiring and trading goods. It's a set collection and bluffing game. You've got a hand full of cards and you can trade them for goods from a common display of cards that both players can see. The goal is to get a handful of the same goods and trade them in for victory point tokens. The bigger the handful you trade in for tokens, the bigger the stack of tokens you get to keep and the more bonus points you'll receive. However, the cards that you trade in might be exactly the cards your opponent is after, so you've got to be smart! It's an excellent game and I love, LOVE, LOVE playing it.

Last up is Lost Cities. In this game you're going on expeditions by playing cards in numeric order to a tableau. However, expeditions cost money, so if you don't play enough cards or you play the wrong cards, you could wind up costing yourself a lot of points. Hanging onto useless cards can clog up your hand, but you might also deny your opponent the cards that they critically need to keep themselves in the black instead of the red. It's a very well designed game and plays pretty fast. Like I mentioned earlier, my wife loves it and you probably would, too.

These are three small box board games that you need in your life. If you don't rush out and buy them then, at the very least, you should definitely add them to your wishlist! =)

u/no_real_username · 1 pointr/AskWomen

Jaipur!

It's a really really clever and elegant two-player game and I love it and it is great for couples (I spent most of my New Years Eve last year playing this with my girlfriend at the time, and it was a ton of fun!)

(Also it has camels which makes it an instant winner!)

u/eckswyezed · 1 pointr/boardgames

Well that's a pity. But I'm glad you had fun.

If you're feeling brave enough to blind buy Jaipur, Amazon has it for around 20 bucks.

u/Tjadonis · 1 pointr/boardgames

I'm not sure how much shipping would be to your location, but Jaipur is still cheap here in Europe! Amazon.de for instance will probably ship to you, and it's only €13,50 ($15.00)

My wife and me both love Jaipur and Splendor. We've probably played Jaipur a bit more with just the two of us.

I wish I knew your budget so I could figure out the price range to go for but here but I'll try to suggest something from three ranges.

First Is like to recommend any dice from chessex. They are a great company and make dice that are well balanced. You can pick them up at your local card/comic/board game shop for around 8$ a pack. The nice part about cheeses is it comes with a non bag see through case with your dice that makes them great for showing off.

An awesome dragon puzzle that you both can put together and hang on the wall after your done

Boss Monster is a fun boardgame where you try to kill the heros instead of the other way around. It is quick to pick up and a fast play if you have a limited time.

Quarriors if he likes boardgames and rolling dice this is for him. It's a dice board game that functions like a deck building one

Play board and card games that can be finished in under 10 minutes.

Love Letter | Amazon | Video review -- plays in minutes. You'd be surprised how much fun and strategy a 16 card game can pack. It's for 4 players.

Score each round as an individual win, instead of the official method which is the first person to win 5 rounds wins (it would take too much time).

Love Letter: Batman | Amazon | Video review -- might be a more palatable retheme for the students. There is one rule difference which you should ignore because it would result in multiple round winners -- correctly guessing another player's card earns you a victory cube only knocks your opponent out of the round.

There are many official Love Letter rethemes, but they all introduce rule variations. So be careful about choosing other themes.

Telestrations | Amazon 6-player | 8-player | 12-player | Video review -- It's like the telephone game, but with drawings.

You write a word in a notebook, flip the page, draw a picture of that word, flip the page, and hand your drawing pad to the person on your left. Then, you take your new notepad handed to you by the person on your right, look back at the last drawing, then flip forward and write what you saw, flip the page, and hand the pad to the left. When you eventually get your own pad back, everyone shares their pad one at a time. It's hilarious.

Skip the scoring system. It's beside the point of playing.

Your challenge is finding the right group size to play the game with your limited time, and strictly enforcing the time rule where people stop drawing when the time is up.

You can also play this game on the cheap by stapling sheets of paper together. But Telestrations uses a dry erase note pad, and if you use real paper you'll be going through a ton of paper. The name of the do-it-yourself version is Eat Poop You Cat, for a reason lost to time.

Ask /r/boardgames for suggestions on 10-minute games that meet your target number of players. And ask for which Love Letter rethemes would interest teens the most, while not being too different from the original Love Letter.

For durability of card games, look into getting protective card sleeves. /r/boardgames can point you to sleeves that will fit the specific games you have.

u/cahutchins · 1 pointr/Magicdeckbuilding

I think I know exactly what you should get him. There is one particular Duel Deck-type product called a Clash Pack.

It comes with two decks (one blue/green, one green/red) that are designed to be played against each other.

Then when the player is ready for more advanced play, the pack includes instructions to combine cards from the two decks into a single, Blue/Green deck that is good enough to play somewhat competitively. He'd be able to bring this deck to his local card shop (if you have one nearby) and have a good time without being completely outclassed by more experienced players' decks.

If you're looking to spend more money than that, you could also get him a couple packs of protective card sleeves so his brand new deck stays in good condition, Walmart should have a variety of sleeves for sale with different designs on the back, but be careful: they sell sleeves in both 50 and 100-packs, and he'll need 60 sleeves for a deck.

u/mulltalica · 1 pointr/magicTCG

Since she is just a beginner, you'll probably want to get her a deck that is ready to play out of the box. I'd recommend picking up the recent Clash Pack that came out a little while ago. This will give her 2 fairly well built decks to start from.

If you want to get her some more stuff, then I'd also say wait and pickup the 2014 Holiday Gift Box. It's a fairly sturdy box for her to store her cards in, and it comes with a bunch of booster packs as well. After that, stocking stuffers such as dice, card sleeves, or playmats are always great gifts.

u/FishLampClock · 1 pointr/magicTCG

As this is your kin I reckon you ought to learn and play with 'em. You can buy the cool new "clash pack" which has 2 decks that are meant to battle, and are 2 different play styles. You can also combine cards from both decks and make a cool single player deck. The pack comes with some fancy shiny alternate art cards which are cool. Also it's about$25 with shipping on amazon.

u/PirateKilt · 1 pointr/magicTCG

I started playing with some buddies almost a half year ago, and one of my buys was the "Clash Pack" that had two pre-built decks... They actually turned out to be pretty cool and even semi-competitive against my friends who've played for years.

u/Albatrosson · 1 pointr/boardgames

I think it's a great gateway and a great choice! It was our opener game for every game night for several months after we got it.

I still love it, but one of the best things about it is how fast and brutal it is. We had a particular game where a couple of people were all about turtling. They never attacked, they never went for points, they just kept healing and buying powers that help them survive longer. Made the game just drag on with no actual change in status. In future, I'd probably do something to mitigate that by possibly removing some of the healing powers.

I also hear Monopoly Deal is a really great card game, actually. And cheap. And only 15 minutes. And name recognition. Might be a good fit in your family! :)

Do you have/have you played Exploding Kittens yet?

/u/Raewynrh, come & join the fun!

Bananagrams - simple word game. A bit like Scrabble only without the scoring system. Really great to play with my kids.

Exploding Kittens - fun as hell card game. Easy to learn and play. Full instruction video on their website. Again, fun to play with my 9 and 13 year old. There's a NSFW version too.

Game Wright sells through Amazon.de with free shipping in Germany.

Edit: Great game choice. Got into Sushi Go this past weekend and we couldn't stop playing

u/costofanarchy · 1 pointr/lrcast

Sushi Go - Amazon US - $12

Sushi Go Party - Amazon - $20

As I mentioned above, I far prefer the party version and think it's worth the $8 extra; it's more than twice the "content" whereas the original is always the same. I'd only recommend the original over "Party" if a super portable game (about the size of two standard decks of cards) is useful to you.

u/MangyRunt · 1 pointr/boardgames

if you mean Sushi Go Party, it's available on Amazon.co.uk

u/Maxpowr9 · 1 pointr/boardgames

It was just reprinted in the States. You can check US Amazon for shipping costs but no idea what it normally retails for in the EU.

u/phenomworks · 1 pointr/pkmntcg

I'm going to second this, and add that if you guys are interested in going to tournaments (especially expanded) then I'd recommend each of you pick up 2 of the Keldeo vs. Rayquaza Battle Arena decks (https://www.amazon.com/Pokemon-TCG-Battle-Rayquaza-Keldeo/dp/B01GT1CY7K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1503662978&sr=8-1&keywords=keldeo+vs+rayquaza+battle+decks) you get full playsets of the most commonly needed trainers and have enough to build a nice little Archie's Blastoise deck or a Rayquaza/Eels deck.

u/NanoSpore · 1 pointr/bloodborne

Yep! Pretty fun, too, IMO. It's both a cooperative and competitive game and pretty easy to get the hang of.

D&D Basics (Getting started)

The Absolute Basics

First you will want to grab either the Basic rules (Free), the Starter Set (Cheap), or the Players handbook, Dungeon Masters Guide, and Probably Monster Manual

Then you need to have at least a few items

  • Dice (Phone apps will work if absolutely necessary, or these)
  • Paper & Pencil (for notes)
  • Character Sheet (In the free PDF or an app)

The starter set is nice because it does a bunch of the work for you, it has an easy to follow adventure, pre-made characters, Dice, and rules for the DM and players. And at half the cost of just the players handbook AND including an adventure, it is an incredible value.

Once you finish that then looking at at least a players handbook for the extra races, classes, backgrounds, and other things is a good deal. That should let you run free adventures people have put online.

The DM's guide will let you get deeper into rules and the right way to call them, break them, and make them.

The monster manual can be a great tool to make better encounters.

If you want to run a commercial adventure after the one's included in the starter set, "Tales from the Yawning Portal" includes the Sunless Citidel, considered by many to be an excellent adventure for those new to the game and just recently brought up from 3.5e into 5e

    Common Tools of the Trade

As you start running more complex adventures you are going to want to have a few tools to keep things moving, either as a player or as a DM.

    As a Player

The bare essentials every players should have are listed above, but most players agree having a few extras can make the game run really quick.

    Spell Cards

These cards have all the spells available for specific classes or from specific books on really well organized cards that make it easy to set aside your prepared spells and quickly reference all the core details.

Cleric, Arcane, Ranger, Druid, Bard, Paladin, Martial Powers and Races, Xanathars Guide to Everything

    Binders & Sheet Protectors

Keeping everything neat and organized can be a huge time saver and make it much easier for you to find what you need. Binders can be a great way to keep your notes and other materials organized. In addition many sheet protectors easily erase dry erase markers making it easy to keep track of spells and other changes without ruining character sheets with constant erasing.

    As a DM

DMs have their work cut out for them. But a few simple tools can make the game run smooth and leave everyone having that much more fun.

    Index Cards

A set of index cards can go a long way to speeding up the game. Players can put details on spells or magic items on them. You can prepare loot for the game ahead of time and hand it out allowing players to look over the gear as the game continues. You can also use them to hide portions of a battle map or commerical map to give the effect of fog of war.

    Game Mats

A game mat let's you make single maps by drawing on them with dry erase or wet erase markers. Many are made of vinyl and can last a long time. Normally they will have either 1" squares or hex shapes.

    Minitures

These things can be expensive, but giving your game that 3D upgrade and helping players better manage space in a game can be well worth it. You can use actual miniatures (Like those from Reaper), Create custom ones on Hero's Forge, or even just buy some cheap stand in tokens from Game Mash.

If you just need a cheap way to keep track of positions army men, bottle caps, colored game pieces, and even legos can all play the role.

No matter what you use, you can pick up colored rubber bands to mark status conditions or other information.

    Where Can I Play?

You can find tons of places to play D&D.

  • Get together a gaming group.
  • Find a Guild or club in your area. Meetup.com,
  • Most hobby shops and especially comic book and gaming shops offer games, usually Adventure League. WotC offers a tool to find stores here.
  • /r/lfg can be a great way to find others to play online with.
  • Play by Mail sites like RPoL allow you to play by forum post.

    Also:

Critical Role - Voice actors playing DnD, Matt Mercer (The DM) is an amazing Dungeon Master and shows how the game should be played.

Matthew Colville - Amazing videos on being a DM, must watch material for every DM. Even when your opinions differ he gives good reasons and great advice.

    Compendiums

These let you ciew all the free open rules (SRD & Basic Rules) for D&D 5e at no cost.

Roll20 Compendium - Has all the open rules for the game, so a good source for monsters, items, spells, etc.

DnDBeyond - A more official source for the content, plus you can buy all the materials released by WotC to use, and has a great character builder.

    Adventures & Maps

DMsGuild - Tons of free and paid adventures and other materials. The quality can be varying, but many are free and that can be great.

/r/dndmaps/ - What more can they say, D&D Maps.

Mike Schley Makes many of the maps for the D&D Adventures.

The cards are the size of playing cards, the one I linked is for sorcerer, wizard and warlock which is the largest set of cards. They also have sets for cleric, paladin and other spell casting classes that are smaller. there a great way to look at all the spell info without using your phone or laptop if your party perfers to keep technology down to a minimum.

Amazon has bulk (1,000) cheapo cards for under $15. You won't find anything super impressive in them, but they will give you all kinds of stuff with different types of rules to learn about. That's how my brother and I got started. http://www.amazon.com/1000-Bulk-Magic-Gathering-Cards/dp/B0028QC50C

These don't have any land, which you will also need, but that's just a few more bucks, http://www.amazon.com/300-Assorted-Magic-Gathering-Basic/dp/B002JAOJJ2 (300 pack) ~$6.

Right about $20 total.

It'll probably be tough to build any themed decks, but it'll let you play around on the cheap(ish) with lots of options.

A lot better than a single pre-built deck, in my opinion. And it will cost about the same.

Another benefit of going this path is it'll let you have decks in each color so you can see what you like. Also, you'll have decks enough to play with friends, even if they aren't willing to buy into it.
