Have you tried the "Japanese White Hell?"

This is at least twice as expensive as just buying an airzooka which works 10x better.

They are water beads (link to amazon).

They are a crystal polymer water substitute for plants and flowers. The beads absorb over 100 times their weight in water to form glass-like pearls that slowly release water back into their environment.

u/Seldain · 45 pointsr/pics

You could buy the water beads they use for weddings and put those in the soil.

You can buy a pack of dehydrated ones at Wal-Mart for like, $1.50. You soak em in water and add them to the pot.. they'll slowly release the water back over a few days.

edit: The clear ones are also fucking awesome to play with.

Yo! Just wanted to drop you this info because I LOVED it when I found it.

Bag O Zombies!

You get 100 of them. You can find them in glow in the dark form as well.

This is also neat looking, but I haven't gotten them.

EDIT

Those look baller too.

After playing Gloomhaven, I really can't go back to these types of boardgames. Looks thematically cool of course.

Edit: If anyone is interested, it's on sale at Amazon for 99.00 (29% Off).

This is an example of why I like having [these] (https://www.amazon.com/Fake-Parking-Tickets-Pad-25/dp/B001689F5G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1503599592&sr=8-1&keywords=parking+print+out) in my car. There was a sale on them not too long ago!

  • Any Seiko 5 watch. There are tons of sub-$100 varieties, just pick one that matches the gift receiver's style best. They're an excellent value:dollar ratio in this price bracket. Many/most are also compatible with NATO watch straps, meaning they have an almost limitless number of combinations/styles that they can be worn in.

  • The boardgame Gloomhaven just dropped to $96 on Amazon. It normally retails for $140, and is the #1 rated board game on BoardGameGeek.
    Gloomhaven summary:
    >Gloomhaven is a game of Euro-inspired tactical combat in a persistent world of shifting motives. Players will take on the role of a wandering adventurer with their own special set of skills and their own reasons for traveling to this dark corner of the world. Players must work together out of necessity to clear out menacing dungeons and forgotten ruins. In the process, they will enhance their abilities with experience and loot, discover new locations to explore and plunder, and expand an ever-branching story fueled by the decisions they make.

Edit: Just a heads up. Others have noted that these are a bit larger than your typical minis and will not fit your average 1inch grid perfectly. Just something to consider.

Not OP.

Like the first picture shows, it's those water absorbing beads. Then when the jar is filled with water they become transparent.

Neat idea OP. :)

Not sure how long figures should be submerged, but it looks cool for a picture! (I'd imagine long term submersion would cause paint damage.)

So I think that a pauper cube sounds like what you want to do. This is an all-commons cube, which, like you say, will allow fun, well-balanced play. It'll also be a bit lower complexity than a power cube would be, which is better for new players (as opposed to things like putting Eldrazi under a Mimic Vat).

Here's a link to an article about pauper cube with a link to a list at the bottom of the article.

The cards themselves will likely cost less than $100 - you may already have a good number of them - and then you would just need sleeves. I recommend double sleeving with something like the KMC Perfect Size inner sleeves and the KMC Hyper Matte sleeves outside. This will keep your cards in good condition (yes, they're commons, but it's nice if they stay nice looking. Some people also choose to foil out their pauper cube, since it's a lot cheaper to do than foiling out a powered or higher-powered cube, and double sleeving will prevent bending).

All in all for probably less than $200 you can make a fun pauper cube. Good luck!

For a funny approach, try these fake parking tickets. They worked for my spouse who used them on a college campus. After gifting particularly bad parking jobs a few of these, my spouse noticed over the next few weeks that the drivers did a much better job of parking. You know how with Lego some kids carefully follow the instructions in the booklet and others just use their imaginations and build random stuff?

Well, some grew up as adults who can easily build Ikea furniture, but that's not the point. The point is that there isn't one specific way to play with toys. Some will use dolls as action figures while others will sit Batman, a T-rex and a car around for a cup of tea.

As for your brother, he'll grow up to become the target demographic for this and than (NB : don't buy from the second link, it was originally sold for "only" $300 or so.)

I don't have parenting advice as I'm not a parent and not an example to follow as a child, but maybe try to work on his strengths rather than his weaknesses (ie. teach him how to read and write rather than try to force him to speak.) Read him books while showing the text and images maybe?

I keep all my DS and 3DS games loose in a small box (actually it's an old Pokémon card collector tin).

Never had any game break because of this. It's ok if they rattle around a little as long as the container is clean (not dusty or full
of sand or something)

I read you have more than one kid using the games. I'd take all the cartridges out of the cases, get a binder with some of the 9-card sheet clear protectors and stick a cart in each card slot. Then they don't have to be in any particular order because kids will be able to just turn the pages and see all the labels easily.

Getting punished for this sounds ridiculous to me, my parents gave us games, back the the original gameboy days, and it was on us to keep them sorted and safe and our fault if they got lost.

Edit: mobile spelling

I'm a huge fan of Lego but Lepin is actually great for sets that Lego has discontinued. For instance, the Lego Super Star Destroyer was discontinued but you can still find sets from private sellers for over $1000. Lepin has a near perfect knockoff for a hundred bucks. Spend a little time reprinting the STAR WNRS stickers and nobody knows the difference, with a 90% discount. I always buy from Lego when I can, but for something like this I don't mind buying the knockoff.

u/SexiasMaximus · 14 pointsr/magicTCG

Let's start with the big picture. You're going to want somewhere to keep your cards.

For the ones at home, something like this should do just fine. It keeps things mostly organized, is rather inexpensive, and will last. You can make inserts to help subdivide more if needed.

Next, you're going to want something to carry your cards in for the go. Many people just use backpacks or messenger bags, but there are [specialty bags] (http://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Pro-Zippered-Gaming-Corrugated/dp/B0009F3DQ4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1419647218&sr=8-2&keywords=card+carrying+case) that you can purchase as well.

To keep you decks organized and protected while in the bag, [deck boxes] (http://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Pro-Boxes-Magic-Pokemon-YuGiOh/dp/B00EA9REK6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1419647294&sr=8-3&keywords=deck+box) are the way to go. They make things nice and modular and will protect your cards even if you just have a normal backpack.

For your trades, if you go that route, a [binder] (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Universal-Round-Ring-Economy-Vinyl-View-Binder/24966030) and some [sleeve pages] (http://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Pro-Pocket-Page-Protectors/dp/B005HIOVOG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419647392&sr=8-1&keywords=card+pages) should do fine.

Finally, your decks. Sleeves! Sleeves! Sleeves! and Sleeves! The cards in your decks are going to see the most use so you're going to want to protect them the best. I've found that [Dragon Shield] (http://www.dragonshield.com/) and [Ultra Pro] (http://www.ultrapro.com/division.php?d=g) sleeves are excellent for their value and use them on several of my decks. Cards in your deck are often your most powerful and you're going to want to keep them in the best shape possible.

Many people, myself included, will argue for getting a [Play Mat] (http://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Pro-84314-Grumpy-Play/dp/B00IT5GPZ2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1419647676&sr=8-3&keywords=card+playmat) so that you sleeves won't get torn up as much and will last longer, but it's not absolutely essential.

Oh! I forgot dice! My group have found that dice are the easiest way to keep track of things like life totals, counters, and about everything else you need a number for. Having your own are absolutely essential, there's always someone you can borrow from, but they're a great thing to have around.

edit One thing I want to point out is that everything there can be customized to fit your particular style, so have fun! The way you carry and present your cards says as much about you as the cards themselves!

u/Crazyeyes24 · 13 pointsr/pkmntcg

I decided to start collecting with Steam Siege and Generations. Figuring out the best way to keep stuff was daunting at first. After going through all of TCC's videos and lurking in this and the collection sub, this is the system I settled on:

-Each Set gets its own 1" binder. Be sure to use a D-ring style so the pages sit evenly on top of each other. I like these from Office Max/Depot because they open and close easily and have a pin-hole style of lock so it ensures alignment of the rings and minimizes catching pages.

--In the inside pocket of the cover, I put the Trainer's Guide from the ETB of the set, fits nicely in the larger of the 2 pockets. Make sure you don't put anything in the back cover's pockets, as that could make an uneven surface for your cards to rest on if you leave the binders on their sides.

--Then, each binder starts with a 4-pocket binder sheet to store one of each booster art for the set.

--After the booster page, I organize the cards by set number, starting with the core set followed by the parallel set. I use Ultra pro's 18 pocket side loading card pages for storing the cards. Pretty much hands down the best. I prefer the black backing and only want to put 1 card in each pocket. Nice fit, though I noticed some scratches/imperfections in clarity on the batch I got. Not a big deal for me, as they are still very durable, but may be for others.

---Basic cards go into a KMC perfect fit sleeve upside-down and then into the binder page. Good protection, tight fit, not too much cost. KMC's are pretty universally accepted as the best. As some have said, too tight a fit could damage a card, too loose and it wont fit for double sleeving. I've never had a KMC perfect fit that was too tight, maybe a little loose, but never tight that it could cause damage. Looser ones I just put to the side for storing non-foil cards and not for double sleeving.

---Any foil card (Holos, parallels, URs, SRs, etc.) go into a KMC perfect fit upside down, and then into a black KMC Hyper Mat before going into the binder. I usually double sleeve a stack of cards and then put them into a tight deck box or under a stack of books for a week or so to squeeze out all the air before putting them into the binder.

-Any extra cards then get stored in the ETB for the set they are from. Organize them however you like, but I keep one section for a playset of up to 4 of each card, and any copies above that go into a second 'trash/trade' section. Eventually I may put the playsets of 4 cards into penny sleeves just to keep things sorted more easily, but I don't have too much surplus yet to warrant it. Again, I always keep things ordered by set number.

--Here, any extra foil cards will get sleeved. Right now I am just using Ultra Pro's deck protectors since I ran out of perfect fits, but really don't like how they have the stippled surface on the inside of the sleeve as well. I can feel it scratching the edges/back of the card each time I sleeve one. Particularly valuable rares or holos may get double sleeved for better protection, but still get stored in the box.

-For actual play, I would stick to KMC hyper mats. Good shuffle feel, and last longer than the Ultra Pro's. I played a game with a buddy with my deck sleeved in the Ultra pro's and loved the shuffle feel, but the sleeves just break too easily if you catch a corner. Also they aren't opaque, KMC's are definitely the better looking.

You'll need the Base Game which allows for 2-4 people to play the game. If you want to play with 5-6, you'll need this expansion.

Beyond that there are many, many expansions such as Seafarers or Cities & Knights. I don't recommend buying any of them until you've played at least 5-10 games of the base version. See if you like the game first.

As for edition, just get 5th, it'll make buying expansions easier in the future.

I have had a few friends buy this: https://www.amazon.com/Wiz-Dice-Pack-Random-Polyhedral/dp/B01KN7REWQ/ref=sr_1_4

It guarantees 15 full sets and the quality seemed fine. It's hard to beat for the price.

u/plazman30 · 12 pointsr/rpg

Wizdice guarantees 15 complete sets:

https://www.amazon.com/Wiz-Dice-Pack-Random-Polyhedral/dp/B01KN7REWQ/

Buy 3 sets of these and you're all set:

https://www.amazon.com/SmartDealsPro-Durable-Drawstring-Jewelry-Packaging/dp/B00W3R2BDC

I bought a bag of Wizdice years ago when everyone was praising them for the number of complete sets. My son and I eagerly put together the bag and got ONE complete set. 3 days later Wizdice reached out to me via reddit because of a post I made and offered to send me a new bag, because the bag I got was a "bag of hurt."

I didn't even complain in the post. I just said that not every bag is a winner and that's the chance you take, I'm still happy with the purchase.

So, now I always recommend Wizdice to everyone, because they went above and beyond for me.

EDIT: These bags are even cheaper: https://www.amazon.com/Medium-Pouches-Drawstrings-Wiz-Dice/dp/B00DH1FZNG/

Ok, don't laugh too hard at me, but I got this "bucket of monsters" really cheap, and you'd be surprised at how many will work for D&D, especially if you paint them. It's 100 monsters for, like $18 bucks American.

Edit: This is a "fantasy creatures" bucket for $23.

u/tavo2809 · 11 pointsr/boardgames

Amazon has it for $95. A tad more expensive but worth to mention in case Amazon works better for someone.

u/jax12622 · 11 pointsr/Magicdeckbuilding

Might want to post this on the actual /r/magicTCG page. If he plays casually you could buy him several products. The Deck Builders Toolkit is a good start, as it comes with a bunch of cards. You could also buy him a "fat pack" of the newest set, Khans of Tarkir, which comes with 9 packs.

The other things you listed could be okay, but there could be a lot of repeats which your son might not like. I have absolutely no experience with the bulk sets at all, so take the risk if you want to. I would stick with the first one you linked though, as it's from a trustworthy seller.

Depending on your budget, you could get the Toolkit, the fat pack, a pack of sleeves, and a good deck box.

u/bubbafry · 11 pointsr/magicTCG

I bet he will find several thousand more dollars worth of cards in there. He should invest in some sleeves and card holders in order to protect his cards. I prefer to double sleeve, then put it in a magic card binder (NOT a regular 3 ring binder) or in a top loaders.

KMC Perfect Fit sleeves

https://www.amazon.com/KMC-Barrier-PERFECT-packs-Total/dp/B00T3Z72Q8

KMC Hyper Matte Playing Sleeves

https://www.amazon.com/KMC-Hyper-Matte-Sleeves-Sheets/dp/B00VCQXQAW

Rigid Top Loaders

https://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Pro-Regular-TOPLOADERS-Standard/dp/B01G1GRLSA

You take the card and (carefully) put the card upside down into the Perfect Fit sleeves. The card should fit snugly in there. Then you put the card into the Playing Sleeve with the opening of the Perfect Fit sleeve at the bottom. Then put the whole thing into a top loader.

So Card -> Perfect Fit sleeve -> Playing Sleeve -> Top Loader

Good luck!.. And no more bend testing for all that is holy, lol.

Edit to add: if they are in extremely good condition (like they look perfect straight out of the pack), it may be best to avoid the Perfect Fit because you can cause very small nicks in the corners if you're not careful putting them in which can affect their grade, but if they look like the Black Lotus you have there, then it's probably not a huge concern.

  • Coup scales well from 2 to 6. It is a good game of hidden identities.

  • One Night Ultimate Werewolf / Vampire are good games that work from 3 - 10 players. Good amount of bluffing and hidden identities.

So, here's all the details on how people store Magic cards meant to be played, with links.

The gold standard for the number of Magic cards to store is 75 or 100 double sleeved cards. As long as your container can store this many cards in one section it will be at least useful to the owner. Additionally, no one really likes storing their cards flat like your current box. Cards are much, much easier to retrieve from the container if stored edge on (top or sides exposed as opposed to your front or back, look at the pictures below).

The Boulder deck box by Ultimate guard holds exactly the preferred number of cards, down to sub millimeter tolerance. 100 cards and 75 cards

Ultra pro makes a pretty ubiquitous soft plastic box for 75 cards and 100 cards which does offer a little more wiggle room.

Ultimate guard makes nearly identical boxes. 75 cards, 100 cards.

They call their 75 card boxes 80 card boxes but that's referring to single sleeving and even single sleevers tend to appreciate the extra space for a few ancillary cards like tokens.

Also, we do not double sleeve with penny sleeves but inverted(open end at bottom of card) perfect^1 fit^2 sleeves and with regular^1 sleeves^2 over that.

https://www.tolariancommunitycollege.com/how-to-double-sleeve-your-magic-the-gathering-cards-and-why-mtg/

Being able to hold cards is great but there is also some benefit to being able to hold a whole deck box. The Arkhive is a popular example. It holds snugly 5 x 75 card boulders and 4 x 100 card boulders. It also holds soft plastic boxes but less precisely.

When storing dice they are stored separately from cards. Ultra Pro, Ultimate Guard

For a base set I prefer Munchkin Deluxe. It has a board added to it, but you can still just use the cards. I find the board really helpful in getting people to play because it’s easier to describe what the goal of the game is. Also, it makes it much easier to play drunk (if thats what youre into). You can always buy expansions and other base sets and use the board to go along with it.

u/Dr_Scientist_ · 7 pointsr/truegaming

This is extraordinarily thorough. So thorough in fact, that you should also consider board gaming. Reading this, it just makes a lot of sense for you. I think board gaming would fit you like a glove.

1. Video games have moved away from couch co-op. You've made a great list here with a lot of solid points, but I doubt you would have ever reached your conclusion, had you considered board games. Keep Talking is certainly a good entertaining game, nothing against it. It's just, that game feels plucked like a needle out of a haystack. Like you've biopsied out a very small node from inside a large mass.

You don't really have this problem with board games. Literally every single board game in existence is designed to be played with people immediately around you. I hesitate to use the phrase "played co-operatively" simply because most board games are NOT co-operative - though there are notable exceptions like Pandemic or Ghost Stories. Both great games.

Board games use human beings as the engine the game runs on. That's not to say board games pit intellects against each other in some sort of valid competition of "who's the most smartest", but to say: humans are social machines and will surprise you with their grasp of system thinking. If I have five or six people in the room with me, I'd prefer the game that we're playing to exist in the head-space between us rather than on some electronic device.

People have come over to my house in the real world. Why not play a game with them that also exists in the real world? I can play videogames over online multiplayer until I'm blue in the face. Just last night I reinstalled Bad Company 2 and played with a few old college roommates. If I had those old friends over to my house, we'd play a board game. It seems crazy to me that someone has taken the time to drive over to your place and you set them down in front of a computer.

2. Because boardgames have always been designed around a social experience taking place in the real world, they're just better at it. This is definitely subjective. You can feel free to disagree with me all you want, but there are mechanics that I just don't see in videogames. Sure, I could load up Gremlin's Inc and replicate what is probably the best roll n' move game I've ever played, but roll n' move is a Monopoly era game genre. Board games can move past this.

You can't play Two Room's and a Boom on a machine. You can't play Bid n' Bluff games like Liar's Dice, Sheriff of Nottingham, or social deduction games like Coup or Love Letter. You can't play physical dexterity games like Jenga (still great fun btw), Flick em' Up, or Catacombs.

There are just games that play better with groups of people because they exist in the real world and make use of humans as the operating system.

3. Board games are much more open to much more people. I don't know about you, but in my experience board games are just more accessible to a wider range of people. I'm maybe going to get a round of Mario Kart out of the adults in my life that love me, but I've sat down with people over 50 and had a great time with Ticket to Ride. At family reunions I've enjoyed Dominion with young children and grandparents alike. Settlers of Catan, Blockus, and Carcassonne are all genuinely fun games I played to death with my family.

How crazy is that? I would really look forward to playing one of those games with my whole family. I can't think of even one videogame that fits that criteria.

4. Perhaps most simply, there are incredible games that just don't exist in videogame form - even though they could. Is the total conversion mod for Crusader Kings II not giving you that full heady Game of Thrones experience? Why not just play Game of Thrones. This is probably my favorite game and it's just not on computers. I can imagine a version of Cosmic Encounter played over online multiplayer, but why? It already exists in perfect form. If I want to play El Grande, or Arctic Scavengers, or Lords of Vegas - well . . . those games just don't exist as videogames.

5. Just honorable mentions. Seven Wonders. Splendor. Blueprints.

TL;DR. There are a ton of great board games out there and if you actually are struggling to think of something that you and your friends can enjoy together in the same room - maybe give it a shot rather than lament the lack of couch co-op in videogames.

Dungeons & Dragons is the big dog, it's the only TTRPG most people have ever heard of and that name recognition means whatever the current edition of D&D is will almost always have the largest player base in a given area in the English-speaking world.

But if you want a different game you could go with something like Savage Worlds, which is a rules-medium system that can play in any genre you want. The corebook (which is the only book you'd need to play, though others are helpful) is less than $10, which is a plus. See the demo here: https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/peg-freebies/TD06.pdf
Corebook here https://www.amazon.com/Savage-Worlds-Deluxe-Explorers-S2P10016/dp/1937013200

If you want to get some friends together and try some D&D (5th edition, which is the current one) though, I'd try it with the free demo rules before dropping between $90 - 120 on the 3 core books depending on where you buy them. Free demo rules here: https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules

If you play a game with your friends you'll want some dice, unless you just decide to use a dice roller app on your phones. I'd recommend buying a big bundle of cheap dice rather than paying a lot for individual sets. A bundle like this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KN7REWQ/ref=sspa_dk_detail_0?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B01KN7REWQ&pd_rd_wg=8uUwb&pd_rd_r=HQQYF600AKZZA1GKEZHV&pd_rd_w=CjKc8

These tubes of minis are probably the best value: 90-100 minis for ~$20. They can give you a good base, and then you can purchase specific minis for more important characters (PCs, important NPCs, BBEGs, etc.)

Dwarves, Elves, Wizards, Orcs, Dragons, Unicorns, Skeletons, Fairies and Centaurs

Fiends, Flesh Golems (Frankenstein), Lizardfolk/Dragonborn (Godzilla), Mummies, Cyclops, Werewolves, Vampires, Zombies, Giant Spider, Giant Moths, Sahaugin (Creature from the Black Lagoon), gravestones

CamelCamelCamel is the site you want to see price history of individual items on Amazon.

If you have a friendly local game store I highly suggest checking their price out and buying locally. My FLGS has Gloomhaven for $119.99 when it is in stock, cheaper than Amazon, and I get to help keep my local store in business.

Warning: DO NOT PRE-ORDER THIS ON AMAZON RIGHT NOW.

All the shady re-sellers are doing exactly what they did during the KS campaign. They mark-up the game way above MSRP and have a completely bogus shipping date that loosely coincides with estimates from the publishers. Amazon does not hold re-sellers accountable for the illegitimate shipping dates they push in order to generate pre-orders.

Start with your FLGS and set up a notification on FunAgain, Cool Stuff or Miniature Market just in case you can't get it locally. Don't support bullshit scalpers on Amazon.

KMC Perfect Fit are sleeves that are designed to fit perfectly on normal sized cards, and thus work for Pokemon cards. They will thicken them up a little bit. They are completely transparent (no words, markings, or anything else on the sleeve), just a clear, colourless sleeve. They are very good quality.

Here they are on Canadian Amazon (would be cheaper on American if you live in the US): https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0007N7PB2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's super simple to make! The bobble head figure is about $9 on amazon. Cut out the plastic in the top of the head and removed the spring mechanism from the bottom. Used the cut-out from the top to plug the hole in the bottom and secured it all with hot glue. Then just bought a $2 miniature succulent plant from the grocery store and transferred it in. The plant looked like this one.

I use these card sleeves. I love them because they fit perfectly to the card and it doesn't move around inside.

I personally prefer to slip the card in upside down so the top of the card is touching the bottom of the sleeve.

If I'm going to be scanning a lot of cards in my game (or mailing them), I use anything similar to these top loaders.

-A wrapping paper cardboard tube cut down one side.

The lamp has a solid metal rod running down the middle. Open the lamp and wrap the cardboard tube around the rod. This decreases the area inside the jar so you can fill it with less dice. This has about 2 layers deep of dice. I bet if I made a cardboard tube large enough I could fill it with one layer of dice and it would look the same.

It is just a standard jar I picked out at hobby lobby that was a hard edged cylinder. Lucky for you I posted a write up in /r/metroid. (I probably should have sold them as kits!)

PARTS LIST:

  1. It starts with making a baby metroid perler. You can find the original sprite at the spriters-resource Pick your favorite!

  2. Pick out the colors you require. Here is a handy chart. You can get perler beads at most hobby stores (Joanns, Hobby Lobby, Michaels)

  3. Acquire pegboard. here's an example It comes with parchment paper. follow the directions for melting with standard clothing iron (Steam setting should be off)

  4. Pick out jar. Choose cylinder with hard edges.

  5. Acquire Water beads here. Note that you only need 1tsp for 16-20oz. They expand 300x their size.

  6. Fill jar 1/3 full of water beads and place baby metroid centered in and level in the jar.

  7. Fill remaining portion of jar with water beads so the sprite stays still. Now fill the jar slowly with bottled water so all voids are filled. Go ahead and give it a couple taps / shakes for the bubbles to be released.

  8. Pick up base light. I really recommend this one. It has a rubberized sleeve that has good tacticity so the jar won't slip off.

  9. ENJOY!

Just spitballing some ideas for you here from what we've loved!

Board games - we've found a lot of fun playing board games together. In our early days of marriage, we would play some fun and lengthy games together. You can set it up on a table and even with all the distractions of kids come back and take turns every few hours. Some fun games we've played together:

  • Pandemic - it's you two against the bad guys. It's a great team game and no one gets competitively aggressive because you're on the same team.
  • Settlers of Catan - a fun game but it it can be competitive. Basically you build villages and stuff - slightly complex but plenty of YouTube videos explaining how it works!
  • Ticket to Ride - A simpler game, but fun none-the-less. Easy to pick up!
  • Agricola - The wife and I played this like crazy our first two years of marriage. We would set a board up and play for hours. You can pick it up in 15 minutes or so from YouTube videos. Lots of fun!

Reading books - something we have fun doing is reading a book together. You could get an exciting best-seller top read and massage her back the entire time she reads it out loud to the two of you. We've bonded a lot through this. Find something exciting and you've got it made!

Computer games - I enticed my wife into my world to play computer games with me. And now she LOVES it. How we got there was I massaged her back while instructing her how to play a game. It took a few days, but she became hooked. And now we have two computers setup in the same room and we play Team Fortress 2 together quite frequently. We've had quite a few Friday nights of pizza + wine + Team Fortress 2 until the AM hours. There's many games you can experience together. Seriously one of the best things that ever happened to our marriage in recent months.

App games - For a season we played Words with Friends together. You can each download the app and play against each other in the same room. We would go to a coffee shop and just sit there playing against each other. There are a lot of multiplayer games out there you can casually play together.

Anyway, there's some ideas! What we've found is that we're always changing - just keep trying new things and the fun and excitement will stay alive!

You could invest into Pandemic with its current discount. You are also half way into Pandemic Legacy which is super good. On that list, the seller named "NYC Collectibles", formerly known as "Brooklyn Toys", is a known scammer. I don't know anything about the others, but most of them are more expensive than the one sold directly by Amazon, so...

Here's a more affordable Imperial Destroyer

Sith Super Star Destroyer

It just saddens me that I'll never have enough disposable income to be able to afford these things.

u/morelandjo · 3 pointsr/Flipping

Here is an extreme example: http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Star-Super-Destroyer-10221/dp/B0050R0YB8?

This set retired this past June, with a retail price of $399. Six months later the price has almost doubled on Amazon(sales rank 22,000 so these things are selling at that price), with sold listings on ebay between $5-700.

The popular brands are usually a safe investment if you can wait months for a return. Star Wars, Spongebob, Marvel, DC, Harry Potter, etc. Even better if it's a popular part of those brands(Hogwarts castle, Death Star).

Lego even keeps a list of items they plan on retiring soon here: http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Retiring-Soon

water beads are by far one of my most popular options.

Home made fingerpaint (without the coloring), moondough, rainbow rice, beans, pasta shapes, beads, marbles, dirt, cotton balls, shredded paper, acorns, golf balls and color sand are all huge hits too. Adding glitter to anything also adds a lot of fun!

OMG. I have a funny story about why my SO doesn't want to take me anywhere anymore.

Last night was his squadron's Christmas party. There were These Things on the table. I'm getting a bit on the tipsy side from Vodka and Cran, and I grabbed one.

It was squishy and gross. I looked at my SO, and the other dude next to me and started to grin evilly

I pulled out the titanium spork from my purse (Yes I have a titanium spork in my purse, it's a spork and you never know when you're gonna need on) loaded the water bead into the spoon part.

I held the handle in one hand, and I pushed down on the tines with the fingers of my other hand, and

PEW!!!! I sent that motherfucking water bead flying and PLOP onto a pilots head.

glad he was a good sport.

My SO stopped me before I could shoot the CO, Wing Commander and Wing Chief.

NO RAGRATS.

Do you own everything?

I use the Plano tackle box, DVD case, and Card binder storage solution and it works really well.

so another user posted this except for he linked the wrong storage box. Ill link the storage box that would work for it all. If you paint minis then i would suggest possibly felt/foam lining the plano storage boxes. This really is a great way to store the game.

Ok, so my favorite movie changes fairly frequently. There are just so many good movies. One of my reoccurring favorites is definitely The Great Mouse Detective though. I love Disney movies, and this one was a staple of my childhood. Plus, it has, IMO, one of the best Disney Villains of all time: Professor Ratigan. One of the VERY few Disney Villains that actually kills someone. I mean, yeah ok, it's a mouse not a human. But it is a movie about mice... so it's kinda like it was a person. But, I have fond nostalgia any time I watch the movie, paired with the fact that it's my favorite disney villain? It's definitely a winner. :)

I was meeting my brother and dad for lunch one Wednesday, like I do most Wednesdays, and I was driving through a parking lot. As I was driving, looking for a spot, a rather large truck started backing out of her spot. I didn't have time to react, and neither did the driver of the truck. About a second after the backing started, there was an audible "crunch". It was very sad. But luckily, the lady had fantastic insurance and Augustus got a new fender/bumper. :)

Well I play Legacy and Modern, so I have some fairly pricy cards that I want to protect. Proper doublesleeving makes your cards nearly waterproof, and all but impervious to spills or mishaps. It also protects the cards really well from scratches. Lastly, if I want to put my cards in new sleeves, I don't have to fully remove them from sleeves, the perfect fit can stay on as I swap out sleeves. And the Japanese sleeves were probably KMCs, like mine.

$15 - Codenames is a great party game where you have to use one-word clues to communicate to your teammates which words you must guess in order to win. It's a race against time because both teams are trying to find all of their words first, but one word is an assassin, and by choosing it, your team loses immediately. It's creative and stressful. Really fun, for $15.

$33 - Ticket to Ride is a classic that lots of people love. It's relatively simple, and has up to five friends placing trains on tracks, trying to complete their routes around the US. It teaches quickly, has some opportunities to mess over other players, and is pretty and plays fast.

$30 - Splendor is a fast, strategic, card-buying game. Players take turns grabbing gems to eventually purchase cards, that act both as points and gems. It's great and hilarious in hindsight, because you realize everyone sat in utter silence for a half hour, because for some reason, Splendor makes people quietly brood and think and be silent. Occasionally, you might take the last gem someone else needed, and they burn inside, sometimes letting out a long, long sigh. It's a wonderful, pretty, well-produced game.

$22 - Sheriff of Nottingham is a 3-5 player, bluffing, negotiation game. Players try to get chickens and apples into town, while smuggling extra goods and contraband. Player rotate as the sheriff, and must be bribed with goods or coins, because if the sheriff decides to check their bag, and they lied about the contents, that player loses what they lied about. It's sweat-inducing, and makes for lots of riotous laughter and shouting. Also beautiful and easy to learn. Great game.

Join us over on /r/boardgames because that's where I learned a lot about modern board gaming. It's an amazing hobby that's growing quickly.

u/wolfkin · 3 pointsr/boardgames

oh this is perfect. An excellent exercise.

$100 to buy games on Amazon with a newbie who has specific needs.

Ok so we're looking to minimize card games, adult players, 2+

  1. Alhambra - $30 - it's a fun game and it gets our requirements right out of the way. it's more than just a card game there's a board, there's tiles to play with, A nice amount of physicality. it's new player friendly and works with 2 players.

  2. Last Night on Earth - $45 - Again going hard on the requirements here. It may be totally cheesy and it might not last a long time in your collection but if you're gonna get this game better to get it when you're young in the hobby so you'll have the most fun. It's team based but works with one player teams. It's a zombie game with a lot of mini zombie figurines to play with. It's a lot of fun to play with.

  3. Blueprints - $30 - I want a dice game in your library and in my head the first game is King of Tokyo which is an excellent game but I don't know how useful it is for two players. Blueprints is easy to learn fun to play and performs well with two players.

    -------
At this point I'm about $5 over maybe a little more because i think i rounded down a few. I might have been able to switch a few things to get more games in but I wanted quality games that minimized or compensated for cards. Plus all of these games play 2 or more pretty wel.

    -------

    Honorable Mentions:

Jaipur - $35 - For a couple I think one of the best beginner games is Jaipur. It's a two player card game with a welcoming theme that's easy to learn and yet when you play it's as difficult as your opponent makes it. The games aren't long so even when you want to try and experiment with headgames you're not investing too much into it.

Looney Pyramids aka IceDice - $9-15 - Now obviously the one to get is the Ice Dice. It's two "stashes" for $15 vs 1 for $10. Ideally you want three stashes and you can play the most excellent "Space Chess" like game Binary Homeworlds

Bananagrams - $15 - Bananagrams is an excellent party game if you have the tablespace. Honestly this is the singular reason I haven't played my copy yet. It's light it's fluffy, it's fun.

Splendor - $30 - Splendor is an excellent game. Nothing feels good as holding the poker chips in this game. It's a nice strategy game with a dash of tactical planning if you want. You could substitute it for Blueprints and still have excellent picks. Very fun quick game. But it is card heavy.

Word ARound - $15 - Now most people probably haven't heard of this charmer. It's cheap, it's probably best as a party game. I happen to like the look of it but no doubt it'll burn out as you become familiar with the words a bit.

    -------
    Race for the Galaxy

I happen to love that game. If you're ever stuck may I recommend this awesome video tutorial.

    Modern Table Gamer

Also don't forget you can play online at BoardGameArena. Some people might be recommending Roll for the Galaxy the new spin off game. I haven't played it yet but I found the Miami Dice episode about it to be very enlightening. Both Tom and Sam speak highly of the game especially in comparison to the original game.

    -------
    Ticket to Ride

Excellent game I hear for two players you want the Switzerland/India map

    -------
    Agricola

I think this might be a bit heavy for new players

    -------
    Eldrich Horror/Castles of Burgundy

While I have played CoB i don't know it well enough to judge it. I didn't have a great time with my play but it was just one time. I hear lovely things about Eldrich especially compared to Arkham.

  8. I have been swimming once in the past ten years.

  10. I once poked lava with a stick and to this day it remains the coolest thing I have ever done in my life. And I have done a lot of really cool things.

I would recommend using KMC Perfect Fit sleeves. They are great for double sleeving, and for storing cards in a binder. Also, make sure not to use a 3 ring binder with the loose ultra pro plastic pages, the rings can damage your cards over time. Use a side loading binder like This.

u/YouthfulEdge · 3 pointsr/pkmntcg

You are using the wrong size of perfect fits. You need these: https://www.amazon.com/KMC-pochettes-Barrier-Komainu-Dou-Original/dp/B00NU5F7U0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1517708010&sr=8-1&keywords=kmc+perfect+fit

They are standard size for MTG and Pokemon. I play with KMC perfect fit inner sleeves and dragon shield outers. My deck is all reverse holo, holo, or full art. No warps at all.

u/SmashPortal · 3 pointsr/magicTCG

I use the classic KMC perfect size inner sleeves. They hold the card very snug, so they fit in most normal sleeves.

They're generally sold for about $5.99 for 100 sleeves, but I've gotten deals on Amazon for buying bulk.

Actually, I use the perfect size sleeves for a lot of single-sleeving, since they're so tight to the card and are completely translucent on both sides. All of my trade foils are inside them to prevent scratching, and to act as an inner sleeve in the binder page pockets.

u/J4H1_TCG · 3 pointsr/PokemonTCG

Also I would use these on any cards that have value. The binder will keep them safe, but over the years they will still get scratched and worn from not being in sleeves. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00NU5F7U0/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1524175687&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=perfect+fit+card+sleeves

u/sexdrugswine89 · 3 pointsr/Catan

Here's the price history on amazon for it.

u/SoupOfTomato · 3 pointsr/boardgames

If you have a friendly local game store (FLGS) near you, they likely have it as well as the right dice. With any luck, they'd even have staff that are knowledgeable enough to help further.

If you don't, there's several online outlets, with amazon being the most obvious. Internet stores tend to have the advantage of a significant discount, but of course require waiting for the things to ship and arrive.

The absolute simplest way to get into it would be purchasing the Starter Set. It comes with simplified rules, one set of dice, and an adventure you can run.

If you enjoy that, or are just absolutely certain you will like the game and want to go ahead and get it all, there is the Player's Handbook. That is the only essential, but you will want sooner than later the Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual.

As for dice, there are tons of ways to go about that. There are phone apps that can do the job cheaper, which you can find with a quick search. Most groups I think will find they prefer using physical dice. It's more expensive but also just that much more fun.

The correct type of dice come at a variety of costs and qualities, but the only necessity is that you have all 7 types of dice available. That is, you want a 4-sided, 6-sided, 8-sided, 10-sided, 12-sided, 20-sided, and percentile die.

Chessex is the most popular dice company and has an absolute ton of varieties. Here's just one example and luckily it is standard to sell all the necessary dice in sets together.

There are also various bulk sets which make up in volume what they lack in choice, and are good for getting started.

Last but not least, you'll need friends willing to play with you. But that's true of any tabletop game.

That was longer than I anticipated, but I promise it's not too hard. There's a bit of a learning curve with any game, but RPGs are a lot of fun once you get comfortable with them.

u/chaos_47 · 3 pointsr/DnD

First came the chessex "pound of dice".

The formats are always {set} onwards. Any set released after the given set, including the given set, is legal in that format. The current standard format, for example, is Primal Clash onwards.

Something worth noting is, as Bulbapedia says, a set is only legal after 3 fridays of release in the US. This doesn't mean you can't play the cards you get, it just means you can't use them in official events (though I'd make sure that whoever you're against is okay with you using the new cards first).

The format usually changes late August/early September, and while Expanded is still Black & White onwards, Standard is always a much smaller card pool, to allow variety and newer cards. Sets usually stick around for 2 years (ish).

Either way, have fun with collecting. There's no better feeling than pulling an amazing card. I highly recommend double sleeve-ing your most valuable/favourite cards (a perfect fit upside-down, then a regular sleeve over the top), as this will protect them from liquids pretty well.

u/alSeen · 2 pointsr/boardgames

Not a theme deck, but this is probably the best thing for new players to learn on. Theme decks are really crummy and slow and don't give a good "feel" for what the game is actually like. This Mewtwo vs. Darkrai pack is straightforward enough that new players can learn on it but also well-built enough that it won't be boring.

I would definitely, definitely suggest getting enough sleeves for the decks though since the cards that come in there are worth more resale than the $30 you'll spend on the decks. One pack of these for the Darkrai deck and another of these for Mewtwo would work if you like color-coordination :)

u/Blodeuyn · 2 pointsr/magicTCG

I do this with my Scion Dragon Tribal EDH deck. I can't tell you his setup, but I can tell you what I've found to work well:

KMC Perfect Fits, as the inner-sleeve, put on upside down, so the opening is at the bottom of the card.

Any Normal Sleeve works as your mid sleeve. For the tightest fit, use KMC Matte (NOT SILK); however I use Ultra-Pro Illustrated ones, because the outer sleeves make the shuffle feel nice; so no worries about the middle one. These are put on normally, opening at the top of the card.

Finally, KMC Character Guards. These go on upside down, with the openings at the bottom; and make the deck feel like a more smooth KMC shuffle-feel. Wonderful together, but be prepared for a REALLY thick deck. Can be tough to shuffle all the cards with smaller hands.

In total; you'll need 1 set of Inner-Sleeves; 1-2 Sets of Middle-Sleeves depending if you buy a back with at least 100 in it; or if you just get a couple packs of 60-80; and 2 packs of Outer Sleeves. It can be a bit pricy, but nothing protects like it; 'cept maybe a top loader over each, haha.

Hope this helps!

EDIT: While I would 100% Recommend Dragon Shield Matte sleeves to anyone who plays Magic; I wouldn't recommend Triple sleeving with them as the middle sleeve. They're a little taller than most other sleeves, and might stick out more with the outer-sleeves. Haven't tested, but be Wary; like good ol' Norin.

u/SnickySnacks · 2 pointsr/dropmix

So it looks like the cards are 63.5mm by 88mm.

If I wanted to be parnoid and double sleeve these, I would want to get like this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00NU5F7U0/ref=pd_aw_sbs_21_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=8VQXF982X03W9S802FQJ&dpPl=1&dpID=91M2EcBE4oL

And this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CJ7415M/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1505029013&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=kmc+sleeves&dpPl=1&dpID=51OK7ekmj2L&ref=plSrch

Does that look right?

Any suggestions on card cases to hold the whole collection? The dragon shield boxes seem to hold 100 or 400 cards, but reviews aren't clear if I can stuff all 300 cards in there double sleeved, since it makes them a bit thicker. Any suggestions on a box that will hold the entire season's set of cards?

Or am I overthinking it and should just get like a generic white cardboard box?

If he is into gaming you can't go too wrong with a steam gift card.

Just techy in general an amazon echo dot is an great for a techy and is ideal for your price

An amazon fire tv stick or Chromecast might be a good idea

If he is into Electronics and/or emulating he may like a Raspberry Pi (basically a tiny computer that you can do DIY electronics on or setup to play old nintendo games on). You could even setup the emulator for him and load him some games if you wanted to link here (pm me if you want to do this and need help with the install etc)

Board games could be a good idea if he is a gamer but it would depend on what kind of board games he likes. Some good ones of the top of my head though. Ticket to Ride, Coup or Catan

u/uptimefordays · 2 pointsr/goodyearwelt

Diplomacy is a favorite traditional board game, Coup is a multiplayer card game that while simple is pretty deep.

Edit: linked Diplomacy, pay the reviewer no mind. Diplomacy isn't that complicated!

u/Xzeno · 2 pointsr/boardgames

There's actually a good amount of fun games for under $40 on Amazon that I would suggest looking at.

u/Sayoshinn · 2 pointsr/boardgames

How about Jaipur or Hive Pocket? Mr Jack Pocket is also wonderful. Star Realms is the best micro game of the year IMHO, and scales past 2P with multiple decks. Coup is also a lot of fun and quick. I personally do not like Cheaty Mages at all.

u/WonkyFloss · 2 pointsr/boardgames

Assuming you want to spend half of your money:

Star Realms: http://www.amazon.com/White-Wizard-Games-Realms-Deckbuilding/dp/B00HRGMPIU

Sushi Go: http://www.amazon.com/Sushi-Go-Pick-Pass-Card/dp/B00J57VU44

One is a deck builder like dominion, the other is drafting like 7Wonders. (If you want 4 player star realms pick up two copies). That is a grand total of $24/$36. If you add Coup OR/and Resistance/ Resistance Avalon:

http://www.amazon.com/Coup-Card-Game-Resistance-Universe/dp/B00GDI4HX4/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1417653537&sr=1-1&keywords=coup

http://www.amazon.com/Indie-Boards-Cards-AVA1IBC-Resistance/dp/B009SAAV0C/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1417653562&sr=1-1&keywords=resistance+avalon

Which are similar (made by the same people), you could be three games in for 40 bucks.

Then add a heavier game or two medium sized games-- check out TableTop, or our "What did you play this week" threads for some ideas-- and you come out with a nice collection of games (5 or six of them) for about 100 bucks.

I'm not saying you have to get these exact games, but think about a few smaller card games with a bigger game for the most bang for the buck.

The resistance (avalon preferably) is 100% worth it since it plays 5-10... but what about days when you only have 4, etc. Catan can't do all the work forever.

I can give better recs if you edit to add more info; even if it's just things like "I like space. The people I play with like space... and Pirates!"

u/GuyNoirPI · 2 pointsr/Gifts

Maybe something from Mouth?. I've been thinking about getting the bourbon chocolate sauce for one of my exchanges.

Also, depending on the family there are a lot of about 15 dollar card games that are really good. I suggest Sushi Go! which can be found at target a lot, Love Letter or Coup.

u/happybabo · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I recommend you Coup even though I have played it once. This game can be played by 2-6 players, and it usually lasts about 15 minutes. It's cheap and convenient because you can take it wherever you go. There are five characters: Duke, Assassin, Contessa, Captain, and Ambassador. Each card has a different ability. The point of the game is to get people to lose all their cards, and you will have to lie you have a certain card even though you do not.

I'm not really good at explaining, but here is more information about the game.

u/atouchofyou · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Coup is a card game based entirely on creating a government coup, including assassinating people. Hard to think of much worse than that.

A lot of people recommend sleeves that are a bit bigger than the card and I dont know why. I tried quite a few and hated them. Then I found KMC perfect fit, they are still cheap but fit the cards almost exact, barely tell they are there.
https://smile.amazon.com/KMC-pochettes-Barrier-Komainu-Dou-Original/dp/B00NU5F7U0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1519142857&sr=8-1&keywords=kmc+perfect+fit

u/NaughtyRhombus · 2 pointsr/PokemonTCG

For my high value cards, I double sleeve them. First I load them top first into perfect fit sleeves, then load them bottom first into a larger sleeve like the ETB sleeves. I like the extra shine from the silver on the ETB sleeves and they're nice and big. Then, they go in a top loader.

For any mid-range cards I at least put them in a single sleeve.

At a minimum, you should be putting cards you care about into sleeves and then a top loader. Putting the open end of the sleeve down into the top loader would definitely be better to protect against dust or accidental water exposure.

u/HitenStyle · 2 pointsr/pkmntcg

You've received some great advice. Here's my take (after watching countless hours of the Professor on Tolarian Community College youtube channel).

  • The ultra pro deck boxes are a great start!
  • For about the same price, try out the ultra pro 'pro-dual' deck box. It holds two decks (or one deck plus dice/counters) all in one convenient spot! (link)
  • The elite trainer boxes are a great value, and the box is excellent for storing cards. You can put cards in directly (like the picture provided above) or you can even fit the Ultra Pro deck boxes inside. (link
  • The elite trainer box also includes card sleeves that you can use to protect your kids' deck. These are not the strongest sleeves, but they look great and are much better than nothing. If the kids are yanking cards in and out of these they may get beat up pretty quickly, so you'll have to decide if it's worth using sleeves at this point.
  • Inner sleeves (or penny sleeves) are clear transparent sleeves. These will provide a bit of protection and can be used permanently (no need to ever take them out of these). Cards sleeved with these can then be 'double sleeved' in the bigger outer sleeves (like the ones included in the elite trainer box) for maximum protection. Inner sleeves are slick so trying to use them without an outer sleeve may prove difficult as the cards will slide around and not stack well. (link)

Good luck! Check out the Professor if you really want to go deep! His 'report card' is great!
    Card Storage Report Card

u/Keethus · 2 pointsr/pokemon

And be sure to get your hands on sleeves. There are a lot of different ones. I'll tell you the ones I use once I'm home :)

Edit:

Regular Soft Card Sleeves These are the regular sleeves. They are a little bit bigger than the cards

Perfect Fit Sleeves These sleeves perfectly fit the cards with almost no space at the sides.

I combine them with the regular sleeves. I use them upside down so that the opening is at the bottom at the card and then put them into a regular sleeve. So it's 100% protected from dust

I put them into a binder after that so there is not too much exposure too the sunlight

I wonder which sleeves you're using? I mean, you probably are truly out of space given the extra big boxes you have there, but i use these for all my card games no double sleeving, just a simple bit of protection and of course makes the cards easier to shuffle. If you're using thicker sleeves, resleeving them to these KMCs would probably save you a significant portion of space in there.

I completely agree, Upperdeck should release a collectors box. I heard they were going to, it was even confirmed in a youtube video where a developer mentions they were working on that, but... where is it?

Amazon has it for $38. Are you specifically searching "Settlers of Catan"? The game got renamed to just Catan, so maybe you're only pulling up older, out-of-print versions.

There are probably others and you can always contact the different manufacturers directly to see if they can sell you bulk dice.

u/PoseidonsHairyNipple · 2 pointsr/DnD

I collect dice sets like a goblin. As long as they're easy to read and don't dick me over too hard, they get to live in the dice bag.

I buy plastic dice in bulk, and I put them in my ridiculous bag I got to hold them all in. If I'm at a con or a game store and see a set I think looks cool, I'll buy it and add it to the mix, but usually I stick to the bulk dice. If someone gifts me a set though, I keep it separate and use them for something special, like loaning it to new players.

Also, I don't hand roll plastics anymore. I just feed them through a dice tower. It's nice as a DM or a caster, because you can just grab a handful of d6's and send them through instead of rolling one or two dice 8 damn times. Also your players can't yell at you for rolling really well or really poor. If you're superstitious, this puts rolls all on fate.

Idk why, but I really like the quirky weird dice-culture that comes with not growing too attached to one specific set. Some dice are lucky and have good juju. Others are assholes and need to be punished. I've also got a jail to lock up the dice that've done me dirty.

And if they don't learn their lesson from being in jail... well.... they should understand I buy dice in bulk and own several hammers.

Edit: words/grammar

Last Week Tonight is my usual go to for fun during these interesting times. Yes, it's a bit cliche, John Oliver attempting to do a Jon Stewart and doing it maybe 80% well, but he has the largest budget out of most of these 'fun political talk shows.' Last week he even rightfully brings up how we should be concerned with Assange's arrest (only available through HBO). In conjuction with the Mueller Report, it paints an interesting picture of how the Trump administration may use Assange to attempt to cover-up certain issues.

I'm interested in Patriot Act covering the report, they do a fairly respectable job at covering the important issues much like John Oliver, but with a more modern appeal. Not slighting the presentation of LWT, just the format is somewhat dated.

There's also Some More News. Since moving on from Cracked, I feel Cody has really come into his own, but it lacks the involvement with the community if you don't also listen to the podcast. It presents itself more like a traditional news production.

Legal Eagle has been a great gem to find. A real lawyer who presents his opinion in an easily digestible manner? IANAL, but it helps give the layman an understanding from a point of view that isn't necessarily entertained when going over stuff like this.

This weekend though, my group is getting together to do two things:

First, watching Arrival then watching Philosophy Tube's presentation on democracy for a follow-up. Oliver Thorn uses Arrival as a tangent to discuss Democracy as it relates not only to Brexit, but existentially as well.

Then the next day we're looking to do another scenario or two from Gloomhaven. I liken it to "DnD meets Monopoly," so your mileage may vary. If you're interested in a copy Amazon currently has it on sale for 30% off in the US. And seriously, get the removable stickers, they're worth the price.

Lastly, I might fool around in Assassin's Creed: Unity which Ubisoft are giving out for free following the Notre Dame fire. The game comes with all relevant story DLC, so they aren't banking on cataclysm capitalism to make a buck, although you do need to register with Uplay to be able to get it and run it. Plus it might be cathartic to play through a rendition of the French revolution after this week.

I hope everyone gets rest and some time to go over the Mueller Report themselves, as these coming weeks are going to be much more dense. The trolls are only going to get worse leading up to primaries and the election, so prepare yourself for disinformation by getting your information from the source!

I bought 3 packs of the nicer mini's for the party to use for their characters and while it might not be perfect (the human wizard is using a human monk mini) it seems to work for everyone.

u/oonooneoo · 2 pointsr/minipainting

Craft paints and tubes of plastic figures will do the job. SCS Direct's Wicked Duals figures would be a good choice for models. They're a good value, but not amazing quality. They definitely will need to be straightened out with a hot water bath and set into position with an ice bath too.

u/slowrine · 2 pointsr/minipainting

Would not recommend, and would suggest testing in a small spot before doing the whole thing. I used it to prime these miniatures, and they all came out sticky and shiny. I hoped they'd go matte overnight, but they didn't. Was more trouble than it was worth.

It could have been the type of plastic, but I expected it to work because it's marketed for plastic ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Also, if you do use it, and want to take it off, a 5 minute soak in odorless mineral spirits took it right off for me.

Then I made a new insert from foam core.
It just barely fits, but it does. I will try to remember to post a picture when I get home.

u/bosteen · 2 pointsr/lotrlcg

Penny sleeves have been my LotR LCG mainstay for a while now, but my head has been turned by the slightly more expensive 'inner' sleeve packs. Made for obsessive M:tG players to doublesleeve their cards, these are like penny sleeves that fit the cards precisely. No gaps, snug fit.

Scuse the UK amazon link, but these are the ones I have bought:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/KMC-Perfect-Size-Sleeves-100/dp/B0007N7PB2

I may, slowly, use these to resleeve my character cards, as the flabby overhang on the penny sleeves just looks and feels terrible by comparison. These perfect fit ones have ruined the others for me! Get them at your own risk!

u/BlueFlygon · 2 pointsr/PokemonTCG

Perfect fit sleeves fit your card... well, perfectly. They are just barely bigger than the card and are meant to be used with regular sleeves. Just an added layer of protection. I used to use them when I played MTG for some of my super expensive decks. They make your decks super bulky and I personally don’t think they are necessary unless you are playing some super expensive cards or if you wanna add a tiny degree of water protection to your cards. Also be warned that some people claim that certain kinds of perfect fits can warp your cards.
here is a link for perfect fits

Penny sleeves are way bigger than cards and can offer some protection if you’re just putting cards in a binder or top loader. They’re not really for playing. (Your cards will fall out and it will be impossible to shuffle.) Most people use them for storage. Personally I use them when I mail cards in a trade or something. It’s really not doing much except maybe protection from scratches. When I say they are big I mean you could probably put 5-7 cards in 1 penny sleeve.

u/pastarific · 2 pointsr/boardgames

> Sentinels, 7 Wonders, Pandemic

For non-CCGs I use KMC Perfect Fit sleeves. They're super thin (doesn't completely wreck deck/stack height,) fit cards quite snugly, and provides plenty of scuff/wet protection as well as easier/side shuffling.

My RFTG+expansions, Pandemic, and Netrunner are all fully sleeved with them. Probably have over a thousand cards sleeved in them so far.

I'm really surprised nobody else really seems to use them. They're kind of pricey for not-exactly-penny-sleeves but the production tolerances obviously much stricter. (Last pack of cheap sleeves I got essentially had two different sizes of sleeves in the same pack. They literally went in the trash.)

For MtG/CCGs where you've got single cards valued at $10+ I use Dragon Shields. For drafting I sleeve everything Perfect Fits. Just because its better than playing raw.

------------------

edit: In my experience, all sleeves are oil slick when they're fresh. Play a couple times to break them in and they're fine.

Regarding dragon sleeves and splitting, I find Dragon Sleeves split FAR more often than Perfect Fits. Maybe all KMCs are better in that regard, or maybe fitting much tighter just means less stuff to snag. To Dragon Sleeves' credit, you get 105-110 in a "box of 100" so you do have some extras when they split. It would be infuriating to buy a box of a certain color for a MtG Commander deck (100 cards exactly,) have one split, and then need to buy another entire box of that color.

u/orejo · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I have teen boys (14 and 16) and shockingly we have not yet seen the lego movie and would love to win a digital copy!

Your son sounds similar to mine in their taste profile, so I asked them what they liked as gifts when they were 12. Here are their thoughts:

  • 50 Dangerous Things book. My boys got this as a gift and decided to do all they could to accomplish all 50 of the things.

  • Munchkin. It's a card game that is easy to learn and fun to play as a family and with friends. My boys love it still!

  • Trip to Disneyland

My recommendation (in addition to my kids) is based on his love of the titanic. Have you heard of Ernest Shackleton? He did a journey to the South Pole that was very much an adventure story about leadership and teamwork. There is a graphic novel about it that might be right for him (I haven't read it) and a larger book called Endurance.

    Good luck on the gifting!

u/armada127 · 2 pointsr/videos

This might get buried in the comments, But I would just like to point out that there are two versions of each model; a more realistic expensive one, and a more play-set like one that includes mini-figures.

  • The realistic Star Destroyer (the one shown in the video) is actually close to $2000.

  • The Death Star, however is the play set one with the mini figures so it's only $400.

  • There is also a play version of the Star Destroyer for $400

  • And a model version of the Death Star for $1200.

Edit: LEGO is expensive, I've been playing with LEGO play sets since I was about 4. There is a lot of work that goes into these toys and it's kind of sad that they seem to be dying compared to the video game generation (not that I'm against video games, I love video games, I just also like LEGO a whole lot.)

Edit 2: My mistake, this is the one in the video which is $400.

u/ProjectShamrock · 2 pointsr/transformers

I've considered investing in Lego sets. My son has been asking for some that are no longer produced for Christmas...and the prices they are going for on eBay make Masterpiece Transformers look like free McDonalds toys in comparison. However, if I became a multi-millionaire overnight, I'd probably buy at least a few of these bad boys. I already bought this one and spent a day putting it together and it was a lot of fun and the finished product is pretty big compared to most Lego sets. I can't imagine how big the Super Star Destroyer must be.

Mint is a pretty durable plant, and this advice is spot on.

The only thing I might add is next time you repot it, add some Soil Moist" or Water Gel Beads which will allow you to go a few more days between watering.

u/TomTheHermit · 2 pointsr/space

These are the ones my daughter uses for her plants, but OP may be using a different kind. His seem to blend together better.

They are really handy for not having to remember to water as often if you mix them with soil. Otherwise, they can take the place of soil, but you have to remember to feed the plants as well when you do it that way.

I have been having the same issue trying to figure out how I want to store all my dials and tiles. I have noticed that if you want to do binders that the small base tiles fit into the old 1.0 Mini upgrade card sized pages, the medium fit into the Normal card sized pages and the large bases fit into the 4 Slot sheets. In terms of dials I have been reading that people have been using These sheets. I have been on the fence about using binders for these, but I already have a box of 100 mini upgrade sheets from 1.0 that I still have like 80% of because I bought it before 2.0 was announced thinking I would need them. I was considering doing card and coin boxes for them. I know Coin boxes are popular as well for dials and small bases, but for the medium and large I don't really have a solution to those right now. I know I can fit the large into Card boxes, but I don't know if there is a better solution for medium bases.

I currently have mine in a Nyan Cat deck box that I picked up years ago during a Friday Night Magic. Of course, I have more cards than the box can hold now lol! So I ordered a customized binder and I'm waiting for it to arrive in the mail this week!

Once it gets here I'm planning on using the Ultra Pro binder pages and sorting them.. somehow! I was thinking of doing it numerically, but it would be easier to find a specific card if they were sorted alphabetically.

It's too bad I'm not interested in the Welcome Amiibo series because the sideways cards would fit my side loading deck box perfectly..

u/Tigeri102 · 2 pointsr/DnD

i would start by advising some QoL adjustments to his spell sheet - i myself, ESPECIALLY for classes like clerics which have their full spell list, like to color-code things that i can do on a bonus action and/or that take concentration, and ofc mark off anything that's domain, from a feat, from a race, etc so i don't confuse myself when prepping my shit. that on its own can clear up a lot. if i, say, use my action to toll the dead, i'll take a quick scan through my spell sheet, look for the blue dots i used to mark off bonus actions, and maybe throw out a healing word or spiritual weapon. it can also help to make an additional, filtered list of actions, bonus actions, etc that you use commonly - going through your entire spell sheet and character sheet can be overwhelming, so having a condensed list of everything you use frequently in one place can be handy.

i also went ahead and invested in spell cards and card pages to keep them in - having them as a quick reference is handy, i just keep them in the same binder i keep my sheets in and flip to them when i need to make some decisions.

i will say, the main thing that keeps my cleric so busy in combat is his personality. he's VERY protective, always concerned about his party members, so when i play him in combat, i'm usually trying frantically to make the most of my turn to that effect. i'll use sanctuary on the utility-focused bard and use my movement to get in front of everyone to take hits, or healing word the barbarian while using my action to pry the monk out of a monster's grip, to use some examples from my last session. obviously that kind of thing is gonna differ from character to character, but he could try, if he hasn't already, thinking about what specifically his character wants to accomplish in the average combat, and from there, think every turn about how to best use the tools available to achieve that goal.

Well my two favorite cards are from the second expansion of the game.

Those are "A bigger blacker dick" which is a classic and "The mere concept of Applebees." This is just because one of our friends LOVES to go to Applebees and we never understood why. Every time we want to go eat, he would always propose it. So when this card was played while he was being card czar we lost it.

Here is one of my blank cards, I don't like writing on them so I put little pieces of paper. It's between that one, "The gap between Rose Tyler's teeth" for my whovian friends and "Before taking a piss, yelling: "Squirtle! Use Water Gun!"

Matte Dragon Shields aren't quite as tough as the original, but they feel better when shuffling. Very comparable to KMC.

My personal recommendation would be "KMC Hyper Mat", spelled exactly like that as shown here. If your option is KMC but says Matte instead of Mat it isn't a fake product or anything, but it's not as good of an option so I'd recommend the Dragon Shields instead.

One additional thing to consider is double sleeving. If you have only a single set of sleeves and swap the decks inside, that does put a little bit of wear on the cards each time. Inner sleeves are a lot cheaper than regular sleeves, so you can put inner sleeves on all your used cards and swap out which ones are in the main sleeve as often as you'd like. It's not something you need to bother with right away, but it's a small optimization if you want to keep your cards pristine for as long as possible without spending as much. Also protects the cards from water damage.

u/default_T · 2 pointsr/bootlegmtg

Don't be too nervous about your cards either. Most people don't pull out your cards while they read them, and with the two sleeves I doubt anyone will notice anything strange.

Instead of linoleum try some card sleeves, maybe some from a magic the gathering site or similar. I use [these] (http://www.manaleak.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=29405) but theres the slightly larger ones, [these] (http://www.amazon.com/Hyper-Matte-Sleeves-80-Pack-Black/dp/B00CJ7415M) although im not sure how big those cards are, try looking around and you might find some nice card sleeves.

u/CaptainAsparagus · 2 pointsr/boardgames

I'm using the KMC Hyper Matte Sleeves.

I like them because they're slightly textured on the back and not as slippery as other sleeves. The cards fit very nicely in them.

I linked the black ones to you through Amazon. They have white, dark blue, and maroon as other color options. Also note that you'll have to buy 2 of these packs to have enough for Star Realms.

KMC Perfect Fit. Like the name, they're just the right size, and they're really high quality, too.

I actually double-sleeved them (put the card in one upside down and in the other right side up) with the matching KMC Hyper Mats (you might need to be careful to get the ones with the clear backs). It ends up being a little pricey but nothing compared to the cost of filling out the card set!

If you are worried about space or you want to overprotect your cards, like if you play daily, I would suggest putting on the KMC Perfect Fit sleeves and then putting your Dragon Shields on. It makes the cards a bit thicker, but they are well protected. When you do it you put the KMC sleeves on upside down. http://www.amazon.com/KMC-pochettes-Barrier-Perfect-Sleeves/dp/B0007N7PB2

You need two different kinds of sleeves. One is commonly called the "perfect fit" sleeve. That goes upside-down over your card. Then you insert your card top-side up into the normal sleeve.

When I played in middle school I kept my decks wrapped in rubber bands and I'd carry them that way in my pocket, and keep them that way in a little cardboard box in under my bed. Luckily I never owned any good cards because the condition of those cards is awful now (but the first rare I ever pulled is still in the back of my binder).

Anyway this is what I use now, with the cards sleeved in these and these.

u/SkylightShepherd · 1 pointr/MLPCCG

I use a KMC Perfect Fit to protect the inside as well as a Dragon Shield clear sleeve for the outer sleeve. It is a bit pricey to use this method but it offers the best protection with a water resistant seal that will not require the mane character to be pulled out every time it flips.

u/Jasoncsmelski · 1 pointr/magicTCG

Get the Japanese perfect fits, not the ultrapro. Dragon shield are fine. I use them too, also kmc matte sleeves are great. Just double sleeve your decks, prevents the slipping you're experiencing and protects them better. Also makes it safer and easier to move cards from deck to binder to another deck.

I have become so good at equipping myself that yesterday when I drove my girlfriends car, we both complained how badly equipped she was lol...

Tweezers, nail clippers, napkins (courtesy of various fast food joints), mini scissors, lip balm, mints (courtesy of various restaurants), gum, tic tacs, coupons, Tylenol, Tums, rags to wipe car after washing, Armor All wet wipes, charger for phone, several pairs of guest sunglasses, box of facial tissue, tissue box holder, fabric garbage bin, foldable chair, and last but not least, fake parking tickets for morons.

u/ChuckEJesus · 1 pointr/BuffaloWizards
u/BranWafr · 1 pointr/boardgames

As I said, already, for the top 10 games you can probably get a good deal online. But, stray from that and the deals aren't as big. My gaming habits tend more towards casual, family and friend style games, which may also make a difference.

Forbidden Island - 16%

Gloom expansion - 15%

Say Anything - 12%

Munchkin - 16%

Tsuro - 19%

MLP Trading Card Game - 9%

Bananagrams - 21%

Scrabble - 15%

Apples to Apples - 0%

Oz Fluxx - 23%

Those are the last 10 games I bought. The biggest percentage is 23%, and that was only a $3 difference. The biggest dollar difference was $5. For differences that small, i'll buy local. It supports the local guy and I get it now, not several days to a week from now.

Also, the reason I don't agree with the original statement is because (as is shown in my personal examples) the online prices aren't that much less for the games I have purchased lately. And, I have never called in to any of the local stores and found that they do not have something in stock that isn't also out of stock online. So, I also disagree with the assertion that they cannot compete for item availability.

Again, I use the bookstore analogy. Sure, I may be able to get a better deal for a book online, but it's not going to stop my from heading to Powells. And, except for the most obscure of titles, i'll probably find a copy of it at Powells.

u/alsorobots · 1 pointr/tabletop

You could go all in with an awesome collection of Cards Against Humanity!

It requires you to have a pretty twisted sense of humor but it's a ton of fun with friends.

You could check out Firefly the Game.

If you're a fan of the space opera, this is one of the more enjoyable games I've ever played.

If you really don't mind blowing 300 bucks, there's the Star Wars X-Wing miniatures game!

You take control of a spacecraft in the Star Wars universe and each game is like an episode of a Star Wars tv show, with a clear goal and twists and turns along the way as you try and accomplish that goal. The miniatures can get pricey but 300 bucks would get you started on a pretty sweet collection if you buy the smaller ships.

300 bucks would also get you started with the world's greatest trading card game: Magic the Gathering!

This classic card game has been around for over 20 years, features thousands upon thousands of cards to select from and, just like chess, takes 10 minutes to learn and a lifetime to master. For 300 bucks you could both have a gaming mat, plenty of dice, a kick-ass card collection and more than enough to start building multiple decks. Heck, you can just go and buy pre-made decks from a plethora of websites. Check out Youtube for suggestions on what formats you might enjoy, but kitchen table Magic the Gathering is VERY satisfying for two people.

Of course, if you really want an epic adventure, you could check out the bigger, meaner, older cousin of Magic the Gathering, and maybe the most infamous table top game in the world: Dungeons and Dragons!

A little more effort than most, but hugely rewarding if you have a colorful imagination and don't mind some simple math (most games requre SOME math, just look at Monopoly), and you have decades of books to explore, and many are available for pretty cheap from both used book stores and your local library (hopefully). This is a hobby that lasts for the rest of your life.

Like Dungeons and Dragons but want a more easy and accessible game to start out? How about [Muchkin!] (http://www.amazon.com/Steve-Jackson-Games-1483SJG-Munchkin/dp/B004U7JJWE/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1462113434&sr=1-1&keywords=munchkin)

We're talking dungeons...dragons...knights in shining armor and a LOT of fun. It's a good start for tabletop gaming.

Of course, Tabletop gaming is pretty extensive when it comes to choices. Here are a few more to check out:

The Game of the Century: Settlers of Catan

Spooky fun with Arkham Horror!

Big Adventures: Small Heroes... Mice and Mystics!

Survive the Zombie Apocalypse with Dead of Winter!

Of course, like Levar Burton says, you don't have to take my word for it. Here is the awesome Wil Wheaton's Youtube series, Tabletop! He plays with his friends so you don't have to! This series is amazing at helping to decide which tabletop game might be best for your playing needs.

Need a little help deciding if Magic the Gathering is right for you? How about Spellslingers on Youtube! Game Guru Day[9] plays Magic with his friends. Not only is this a super easy way to learn the game, it's a lot of fun to watch.

Need a little help understanding Dungeons and Dragons? Give Critical Role on Youtube a listen!

Luckily, you happened upon a time where tabletop games are going stronger than ever so...good luck!

Munchkin card game. Very fun for RPG fans... best played with a group of friends. It's a card game (not like Magic the Gathering, it's more for a casual group of friends), but it's kinda hard to describe, so I'll borrow their description from the Munchkin site:

Munchkin captures the essence of the dungeon experience . . . with none of that stupid roleplaying stuff. You and your friends compete to kill monsters and grab magic items. And what magic items! Don the Horny Helmet and the Boots of Butt-Kicking. Wield the Staff of Napalm . . . or maybe the Chainsaw of Bloody Dismemberment. Start by slaughtering the Potted Plant and the Drooling Slime, and work your way up to the Plutonium Dragon . . .

Fast and silly, Munchkin can reduce any roleplaying group to hysteria. And, while they're laughing, you can steal their stuff.

I use the spell cards, plus a binder that contains these card sheets. They are in order of the spell level, then alphabetized.

In the front of said binder, I keep another few pages with my cantrips, spells given to me by the Domain, and the spells I've chosen for the day. These pages are separated by a page divider for easy flipping.

On a separate sheet of paper, in or out of the binder, contains my play session's notes. in these notes will be tallies of how many times I've used my CD, spells slots, and other abilities. It sounds like a lot, but once you're done setting up you'll never really lose track of your spell counts, etc., so long as you aren't too drunk.

u/floralcode · 1 pointr/AnimalCrossing

I... just have them all in a pile that I move around. Right now it's on my nightstand! Can't you just get a sleeve like this and put it in a binder? You could even get dividers to organize the series/etc. I kind of want to do this, but I don't want to give myself an excuse to buy more amiibo cards!

u/motionmatrix · 1 pointr/ImperialAssaultTMG

I use this binder. It has pockets that can handle all the paperwork, manuals, character sheets, etc.

I use these for the small map pieces They go in the binder.

I use these for larger map pieces. They also go in the binder.

All dice, tokens, and cards go in this box.

I ordered the box inserts for all the boxes from these guys. That covers all the minis except for the largest stuff (AT-STs), which got a case from them instead.

u/Keokothelesser · 1 pointr/FinalFantasyTCG

I just use a 4 or 3 ringed binder and use these

I back to back cards, so you get essentially 6 different cards per insert. I also use the ultra pro soft sleeves when in folder.

I just have them in serial order. 1 folder for Opus 1, 1 folder for Opus 2 etc

u/AmiiboPuff · 1 pointr/amiibo

If you don't care about the outside design, any basic binder should work with your basic trading/collectible card binder sheets. Like these for example.

Any retailer or hobby shop that carry Magic/Yu-Gi-Oh!/Pokemon/MLP or Baseball cards should have them in stock as well.

u/AbysmalVixen · 1 pointr/dndnext

I’d say a folder for the ones that will fit. For the smaller ones you could do some [Binder Pocket Protectors] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005HIOVOG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_IcsSAbG8D3Y84) and have them easily accessed and separated in a binder. For the ones that are huge, I have no idea as I’m sure you don’t want to fold them up

u/itsok_imapirate · 1 pointr/RandomActsOfPolish

Using trading card sheets, I was finally able to organize my stamping plates. They hold the small standard round plates with room to spare, they will even hold some of my larger plates! I found that buying these and sticking them in a binder was way more cost effective than buying those little Pueen holders.

Edit: these are the card holders I used

>To give you an idea on deck building, here are some information that you will find helpful.

>Now, I will also give you some important information what stuff you need to play your deck.

>Purchasing cards
=============

>For purchasing cards, I recommend buying a booster box and an elite trainer box for each new set that comes out then purchase singles. An elite trainer box also gives 5 of each Energy type and burn and poison markers as well as nice dice! One for flipping and the others for keeping track of damage They're made of acrylic, not cheaper cardboard that come with preconstructed decks.

>Sleeves
============================

>Also, I can't stress this enough but, you need sleeves. I recommend Ultra Pro Matte Sleeves. You would need 66mmx91 mm ones to fit Pokemon cards.

>You can never have enough sleeves. Extras are used to replace ones that look worn out. If you play with worn sleeves (marked) you can get in trouble.

>Another important thing is a play mat. I really don't like seeing players struggle to scoop up cards on the table instead of a mat; damaging their sleeves in the process!

I have the following set, it should suit your needs:

Here is price information from Amazon, for what is included:

    Item | Amazon Price
    --- | ---
The Bigger Blacker Box | $15
    Cards Against Humanity | $25
Cards Against Humanity: First Expansion | $10
Cards Against Humanity: Second Expansion | $10
Cards Against Humanity: Third Expansion | $10
Cards Against Humanity: Fourth Expansion | $10

You can "complete" the set by ordering expansions Five and Six on Amazon.

The Bigger Blacker Box case has enough room to fit both additional expansions, if you take out the foam spacers. It also comes with black dividers, for helping organize.

I have not done this, btw, but apparently if you cut open a specific place inside the lid of the Bigger Blacker Box, there is a special card inside. Something about big black cocks, naturally.

Purchase price on Amazon for all of these items is $80 total. I will offer my set at $70. It is in excellent condition. We've only used it on two occasions.

Also, I know people are probably wondering why I don't offer a larger discount. $70 for a used CAH set might seem "not generous enough". Here's my perspective though. a) This is a pretty comprehensive collection in excellent condition (most of the cards have never been used) and well organized, b) I don't care if I sell it or not, c) I suspect you might be interested in completing the collection anyway, and this collection gets you 80% of the way there, and d) you have a tight timetable.

I live downtown. I work from home. PM me if you're interested, my schedule is flexible.

  • Take your time learning. Magic is kind of like Chess in the way that it's simple to pick up and play but takes a lot of time and effort to master and no one becomes a guru overnight.

  • If there are any specific cards you're looking for it's usually cheaper to buy them individually instead of gambling with booster packs. There's a chance to pull some $20+ cards from boosters but the odds are heavily stacked against you.

  • Know what your cards are worth and don't be afraid to turn down a trade if you aren't 100% certain of the value of everything involved.

  • Always keep your expensive cards protected and keep your decks stored inside of deck boxes so they don't get crushed or bent. Using rubber bands to keep cards/decks together can seem like an acceptable budget solution until they start to bend or wear the edges of the cards, which turns a $50 card into a $0 drink coaster.

  • It's definitely worth investing into some card sleeves for your decks. They make decks easier to shuffle and prevent your cards from getting dirty. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people open a valuable foil rare from a booster draft, play it unsleeved for the tournament and then find out that no one wants to trade for it afterwards because it's completely scratched to hell.

  • You also might want to look into getting a playmat. It's not nearly as mandatory to have as sleeves but it helps extend the life of your cards even further, it guarantees that you'll be playing on a clean surface and it helps mark your space at a table.
u/traceurling · 1 pointr/magicTCG

Sorry I'm a little confused, are you offering the KMC Hyper Matte Black or the KMC Perfect Fit, I'd trade for either but I'm more interested in the Hyper Mattes.

u/johnnywi · 1 pointr/oldschoolmtg

Ok, thanks for that advise. I looked at some Amazon reviews for KMC sleeves, and some mention quality degraded lately (https://www.amazon.com/KMC-Sleeves-80-Pack-Standard-Pokemon/dp/B00CJ7415M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1523195800&sr=8-2&keywords=kmc+sleeves). Have you experienced that?

u/Ravengm · 1 pointr/boardgames

Aside from something ridiculous like laminating all of your cards, sleeves are your best option. I highly suggest matte sleeves of some kind if you're annoyed at the sleeves being slippery. Both Ultra Pro and KMC have them, and potentially another company, but those are the ones I know of.

u/spelunker · 1 pointr/boardgames

Dragon Shields and KMC are regarded pretty highly over in the /r/MagicTCG community. I own some KMC Hyper-Mattes and the quality is great.

Neither are the cheapest of options, mind you, but I think they're worth the investment.

On the cheaper tier, apparently UltraPro Mattes are pretty decent.

u/I_Hate_Robots · 1 pointr/pkmntcg

Best bet for storing a large lot of cards is cardboard boxes such as those you're seeing online. Anything will do, really. If you're concerned about the long term health of the cards you'll need to keep them in a watertight container in a temperature controlled room.

As for card sleeves, most folks will use one of the following (listed from most to least durable, roughly):

u/Brohanwashere · 1 pointr/magicTCG
u/DonOblivious · 1 pointr/Pauper

$25 on Amazon doesn't go far when you're buying commons. The sellers there pay much higher fees than on TCGPlayer and the card prices will reflect that.

A $.90 card costs $1.20, $2.80 costs $3.40, $0.70 costs $1.11, etc. The $15 white tokens deck /u/tommamus linked is just shy of $30 on Amazon.

I'd steer you towards buying something like sleeves instead. Those are around 40% off what my shop charges. Funnily enough, I bought mono-w tokens in the shop a few weeks ago and it was ~40% cheaper in the shop than it would have been if I ordered it from Amazon.

This steampunk flavored Cryptex Flash Drive might be appreciated! Useful and stylish in a similar vein to this Steampunk Watch
As for board games, I recommend Shadow Hunters, Splendor, and Coup

For tabletop games, you could get him A Nice Set of Color Coded Diece

When it comes to video games, this Retro Arcade Console Desk Toy could be a great work passtime with 200 games! Alternatively if you have a fridge or a metal workspace, Magnetic Tetris! for idle hands

Thank you, oh venerable Daemon Primarch.

After looking it up, it seems like a game I would have played with my 40k buddies. Not really the kind of thing I'd play with my fiancée. For just the two of us I'm thinking either cooperative games, or fairly quick to play. Things like Ticket to Ride or Pandemic (just going off descriptions and reviews).

We also play games with a few siblings and/or couples, but none of them gamers, per se. Games like [The Resistance] (http://www.amazon.com/The-Resistance-Dystopian-Universe/dp/B008A2BA8GG) or [Coup] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00GDI4HX4/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?qid=1448982177&sr=8-7&pi=AC_SX110_SY165&keywords=Indie+Boards+%26+Cards&dpPl=1&dpID=41UHjXzUbiL&ref=plSrch) have been dabbled in, with great enjoyment. Cards Against Humanity as well. So I'm doubting anybody would be up for something as intense as Game of Thrones. But thank you for your offer.

Certainly (in general) the more pieces the game involves, the more costly it's going to be. There's definitely something to be said for having epic games with the immersion that the board and the pieces bring, but I'm also a fan of a number of more compact games.

They're mostly cards with maybe a couple chits, but they're all fantastic and bring a different experience. It's nice having a lower price point, taking up less room, and being more travel friendly -- especially when you're building a collection with friends and playing at each other's apartments/homes.

On my "Games" list is Splendor, which just dipped below $25 for Prime Day. We played it once at a friend's house and we'd love to add it to our little game collection.

Shortly after dinner, introducing a friend to Archer with the Archer drinking game. (I mean, it's a game, right?)

Finally, after dying from exactly one episode, we'll be having board game night with friends. I'm guessing we'll be playing Shadow Hunters with cards we made ourselves, but I'm hoping that we play something different, like Splendor or City of Thieves with draft picking.

I'll also second the homebrewing kit but you might want to search around. I got one of them for each my brother (mid 20s) and father (late 40s), neither of which are usually very "DIY" kind of people, from Northern Brewer and they both really enjoyed them and purchased more kits later on.

My seven-year-old daughter and five-year-old son both love these games. They’re both quite affordable and well-rated.

Sleeping Queens

This is a nice little card game targeted at kids. I find it interesting enough to not be completely mind numbing for adults, too — though it’s definitely a kids game.

Splendor

This is an adult strategy that was given to me as a gift, but is quite playable for both of my kids — despite saying it’s for 10 years and up. One nice thing about this game is that there is no hidden info, so it’s easy to advise and assist others without having to see something that is normally private. It’s a fun game with somewhat simple strategy, but that can actually be a bit more deep or advanced than it initially might seem.

I would like the baby groot!

A recipe you say?
Well here's my Aunts amazing artichoke and spinach dip:

1 can artichoke hearts
2 boxes of frozen spinach (or you could get fresh spinach and do the whole cooking it thing but idk how much that takes)
1 entire stick of butter
1 package of cream cheese
1lb cheddar cheese
1 medium sized onion
1/2 cup parm cheese
1 tbsp sugar
1 cup sour cream

First you're going to want to get those onions cooking. Cut the onions into medium/small pieces. Get a frying pan and put it on medium heat. Put the entire stick of butter and let it melt then add the onions and tbsp of sugar. You're going to want to wait until these are completely caramelized. So put a lid on it and let it cook until they are amazingly golden brown and nom.

While that's happening preheat the oven to 425.

Next defrost those two packages of spinach. This takes a minute if you have a 500 year old microwave like I do. Get them completely defrosted until they are warm. Then you need to strain all of the water out. I get a colander and a big bowl and use my hands to squeeze all of the water out over the colander. (This way any pieces that fall are caught.) Squeeze that spinach until every single drop of moisture is gone.

Get those artichoke hearts and cut them into good sized pieces.
Grab your cheddar cheese and grate all of it.
I put my cream cheese in the microwave for about 30 seconds so it softens.
Measure your sour cream and parm cheese.
Now throw everything in a big bowl, all the ingredients.

Now is the really messy part! You could use a spoon or a spatula or something, but I use my hands because it's the easiest. Make sure you wait a minute until the onions aren't scolding hot to do this. Mix it until it seems like everything is mixed thoroughly and then grab whatever pan you want to put it in.

Honestly, I use a bigger sized pan but you can use whatever you want. You could even put it in little souffle cups if you wanted to.

Grab some more of that parm cheese and sprinkle it on the top. Now put it in the oven for about 15-20 minutes or until it's golden brown on the top.

The best thing to eat it with is tortilla chips, but you could use absolutely anything.

WARNING: THIS STUFF IS AMAZING AND IS PROBABLY AROUND 9823287 BILLION CALORIES. SO I WOULD recommend NEVER making it unless you have to take it somewhere. If not you may get diabeetus or have a heart attack because once you have some you want all of it. trust me

I'm sorry for your loss. It's very hard to lose a friend. But it really does help to think about all the fun times, and great memories you have with that person. But, if you need someone to talk to, please feel free to send me a PM. :)

A few years ago, I deployed to Afghanistan. Early on in my time there I became really good friends with a guy named DD (his nickname for privacy purposes). He was also a military member. Well, unfortunately he had a longer deployment cycle than me, so I ended up leaving before his unit. And DD, he didn't make it home at all. He was killed when his truck hit an IED. This happened 3 weeks after I got back the US.

Sadness aside, the things that really helped me cope with losing my friend were the memories we had made while we were able to hang out over there. (Which, was actually quite often. We were practically each other's shadow. Us, and our group of mutual friends) Among those memories, one really stands out to me. Well, one day I had to go out on a mission myself, and while I was out I was able to purchase a set of drum sticks for him. So when I got to our base, I handed the drum sticks to him, and he just had this look of a child on Christmas. Like, he couldn't believe that anyone would be so thoughtful to bring him something related to his absolute passion. From then on out, I almost never saw him without those drum sticks in his hands.

As crazy as it sounds, I think he knew that he wasn't going to make it back. There was one day where we sat down to chat, and he just had this real serious look on his face. We start talking, and the topic of those drum sticks come up in conversation. It wasn't until then that I realize how much of an impact just a small random act of kindness towards a friend meant to him. Something I had only done on a whim to make a friend smile. Well, I guess it meant more to him than i'll ever know because he asked me, should he not make it back from overseas, to lay a set of drum sticks on his grave.

That experience really made me realize just how much of an impact you can have with even the smallest gestures that might seem meaningless to you. But, even just thinking about how happy he was to recieve such a simple gift, it really made me smile then and still makes me happy to remember it now.

As for an item, I'd have to say this would be great to have on my desk at work. It would definitely make me smile more haha

KMCs are ones that Magic players use and should work well as inner sleeves for double sleeving. My personal preference is to use KMC Hyper Mattes and over KMC perfect sleeves for inners.

I go through a TON of sleeves for MtG (play pokemon casually), so those are what I use for tournament play and the $56 is well worth it for me.

u/Reposer · 1 pointr/PokemonTCG

Second in regards to protecting it - the best method would be a perfect sleeve followed by any form of deck protector and then into a toploader - and of course keep it in a dark place that's relatively temperate, if possible.

In regards to your question - it really just depends on if you need money now or not. It will rise in value as time goes on for sure, so if you're not hard up just keep it.

u/Bryanfisto · 1 pointr/magicTCG

I sleeve all of the tokens my deck uses to protect the surface (for cosmetic and consistency reasons, not because I care about a <$0.01 "card"). I use KMC "perfect fits" because they're cheap in bulk, fit snug to the card, and make the surface more slippery for moving the cards around.

u/GrimSanto · 1 pointr/dropmix

u/reaper527 · 1 pointr/magicTCG

for my decks, i typically use art sleeves such as these. since art sleeves have a tendency to be hard to get the same sleeves a year or two down the road, this means i'll pick up an extra pack when i'm making a deck so if sleeves tear on me, i'll be covered.

as such, this means i have plenty of extra sleeves that i can throw in binders. i'll throw my cards in a perfect fit, then throw that in one of my art sleeves, and put that in my side load binder.

u/DragoBrokeMe · 1 pointr/boardgames

I love sleeving cards for my games! Love the feel and I actually double sleeve (these then these for regular sized cards) and generally do it while it while watching TV some night, so it's not like I have to give up time to sleeve.

u/abaloneyhasnoname · 1 pointr/pkmntcgcollections

While you may not be pricing the cards, using the pricing guide on tcgplayer.com is a good place to start organizing specific sets. It can also give you a general market value for all conditions as you are organizing. If you see the market value on a specific card is much higher than others in the set, you should consider protecting that one with penny and hard sleeves(or depending on the card, perhaps more than that). If you are going to store your cards in binders, i recommend these sleeves for inside sleeves and these sleeves for the outside soft sleeve prior to putting in a binder like this or like this.

u/dontdrinkandderive · 1 pointr/pkmntcgcollections

u/MapleA · 1 pointr/pkmntcg

It’s better to get perfect fit cards meant for double sleeving which would fit inside of traditional sleeves. The advantage is that if any liquid spills the double sleeved cards won’t be affected at all. It has saved my ass so I double sleeve important cards and the deck I play with.

Hey bud, I have an innistrad plane cube for drafting thats pretty sweet. I can go over what I did if it helps at all.

I started with only Innistrad, great Draft environment to use as a base. Then I replaced all of the vanilla creatures or unplayables with another card from DKA, AVR, or SOI that fit the same role but had a relevent ability or stats. (Ex. a 2/2 zombie for 1b that had no abilities was replaced by a 2 mana zombie in the same rarity with more relevent abilities)

Right now the cube is about:
50% INN
20% DKA
10% AVR
20% SOI

Im trying to recreate a draft environment so I manueally create packs and put them in team bags (https://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Pro-Poly-Team-Bags/dp/B00095NR1K) to have them ready for each draft.

The slits for common, uncommon and rares is (5/3/1)
I keep flip cards seperate, the are split (3/2/1)

When I make packs I shuffle all the commons together, then repeat for uncommons, rares, and Flip cards.
Each pack is 9 Commons,3 uncommon, 1 rare, 1 flip card, and 1 land. The land could be any nonbasic land from any Innistrad set, put in for fixing and utility.

Right now my rares can be from any set and are pretty balanced, nothings unbeatable.

I also keep the flip cards in clear hypermattes while drafting and playing, but I have a checklist for each in a black sleave for proxying in the deck.

It is alot of sleaves and the cube fits a normal 2 row. But if you buy bulk, its not too bad. Buy perfect sleeves and a size larger of sleeves, dragon shield or the like, and then place them into binder sleeves in cool dry places.

Edit: And by perfect, I mean the perfect fit sleeves, these ones:

This is likely the best price you are going to get on Perfect fits. Its about what you are going to pay for 4 packs of perfect fits at a store.

As for sleeves, i would be using dragonshield matte sleeves or kmc hypermatte sleeves.

The best price on dragonshield sleeves is going to be at starcity games open events at about 8$ per box of 100. But you can get them for 10-11 at local game stores in the likely situation that you aren't particularly close to an open.

For all my double sleeved permanent decks I use Dragon Shield Mattes with KMC perfect sizes. Dragon shields are relatively cheap and good quality and KMCs are on amazon for ~$4/100

For my draft sleeves I use ultimate guard katanas. They are lovely sleeves with amazing shuffling feel but they are harder to get/more expensive. Since my draft sleeves are the one pair of sleeves I use more than any other I shell out a bit more for them.

They split sometimes. But usually I double-sleeve, so it's not a problem.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00T3Z72Q8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They are very nice and transparent, even though they may be slightly too tigh, and the card tend to curve a little. In a 9 page collector after a bit the card adapt to the size, but I am not so fond of using them for cards that I use for gaming.

So I am still not sure. Maybe I will update with a post when I will try more

I usually go by cost. I find that even if you buy the cheaper ones the replacement cost is minimal. I usually have excess of what I use. I think I have primarily Mayday Sleeves with a sprinkling of Fantasy Flight. Also for standard size I buy this once in a while. I can understand why you would come here, but to Monopoly is to board game nerds what Call of Duty is to video game nerds. Many a time have we here on /r/boardgames told people "I like to play board games" only to get the painful, cringe worthy response, "Oh, like Monopoly?"

I in no way mean to criticize you for enjoying Monopoly. Board games are awesome, and anyone can like any game they so choose, however, you may find that many people here very much dislike Monopoly and don't want much to do with it.

I would suggest instead, you get your hands on a "designer" board game (they can be quite cheap!) and join us in the wonderful hobby that is board games. Generally regarded as "the" starter game, [Catan] (http://www.amazon.com/Mayfair-Games-MFG-3071-Edition/dp/B00U26V4VQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1462063793&sr=1-2&keywords=settlers+of+catan) is loads of fun, provided you have 2-3 friends to play it with and a little under 40$ to spare.

As a personal recommendation, my first board game that got me into the hobby was [Betrayal at House on the Hill] (http://www.amazon.com/Betrayal-At-House-Hill-2nd/dp/B003HC9734/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462063949&sr=8-1&keywords=betrayal+at+house+on+the+hill). Again, all it takes is a few friends and a little under 40 bones. I personally like this game due the board game being totally unique every time you play it and with 50 different stories to play, I'd gladly play a game right now, and I've easily had 30+ playthroughs.

Of course, you could go with an even easier "start-up" cost and go with another favorite of mine, [Love Letters] (http://www.amazon.com/Alderac-Entertainment-Group-5104AEG-Letter/dp/B00AGJ4HC2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462064185&sr=8-1&keywords=love+letters). This one is exceedingly simple to learn and very quick to play and only requires one friend (though I find it a lot more fun with three or four friends (preferably drunk ones ;))). To top it all off, it isn't even ten dollars, I'd bloody send you a copy if it got you into board games, lol.

Anyway, I kind of started to ramble a bit, but it's a mega fun hobby and you should definitely get into it.

u/over-my-head · 1 pointr/funny

It costs money to play ongoingly? You can't just buy a board or set or play or whatever?

Wow. No wonder it tends to be reserved to hardcore fanatics.

I know some German games can be expensive, initially, but even Settlers of Catan is just $35 on Amazon

And they do have expansion packs, but you absolutely don't need them to play a full, fun game.

I can't imagine playing a game that you had to keep buying new stuff for in order to really participate at a decent level.

I play guitar, and people might say these card games are a hobby like that, and that spending money on new cards is no different from continuously spending money on new guitar gear and pedals.

But even there, you don't actually need anything beyond an acoustic guitar or an electric and a basic amp if you want to learn. You absolutely could play just those things for 5 years before buying a single pedal while teaching yourself how to play. Apart from maintenance like new strings and the odd setup (if needed at all), you can just pay once and play - forever.

But it sounds like people have to keep buying better cards in order to keep playing the game, because everyone else is also trying to get an edge by buying better cards?

That sounds like a way for a hobby to make you broke, rather than enrich your life.

u/WawaSC · 1 pointr/boardgames

Thanks!

We'll probably have 3-6 people usually. On big nights we'll have 8-10 but at that point we'll just rotate people who will play while the others hang out.

Is this the base game?

I guess Catan on does 4 players at a time. So I saw this and I guess I have to pick it up for more people?

But apparently there are versions as well. The expansion says it only supports the 4th edition? lol. Getting confused at this point.

One of the 18 number markers?

As far as I am aware, the latest version of Catan doesn't have an 18 number marker.

Perhaps you have the 4th edition of the game, Settlers of Catan.

This is the 5th edition (the most recent).

This is the 4th edition

If you have the 4th edition (or earlier) you might be in luck since those sometimes sell for more than the 5th edition.

Edit: here's a link to pictures of some of the different editions: https://boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/6428/bgc-settlers-catan-msia-2011-qualifier-2-otk-chera

u/bookchaser · 1 pointr/boardgames

Catan and maybe the 5-6 player expansion.

Those are the latest versions of the original Catan game, which basically just have new box and tile art over old versions. This version, and the previous version, have a cardboard water border, and the one before that does not.

The tile are isn't significantly different between versions, and won't be in future versions unless they go with a new illustrator or art style.

The price on Amazon is riding high right now. I'd wait a week or two to see if it drops with the after-Christmas slump. It's listed as taking 1-2 extra days to ship, which is not normal, and probably related to the increase in price.

Metal dice are a pain, they are heavy, don't roll well in my experience, and can seriously damage a table top. I would recommend either going to your flgs and buying a set or buying one of these two off Amazon: Chessex Pound-o-Dice Wiz Dice Big Bag. I prefer the chessex for the designs and the number layouts. The chessex set is 25 and the wiz dice set is 20.

u/Jammintk · 1 pointr/rpg

It might be ruining your thought experiment, but practically speaking, dice aren't that expensive and don't take up a ton of space. Especially if you aren't looking for specialty or specific dice. You can get 15 sets of dice for $20 (100 dice total) If you want a specific set of dice, you're looking at $6-ish for a cheap set or more for nicer sets.

There are plenty of RPGs that only use 6-sided dice which you likely already have lots of from other board games lying around. Powered by the Apocalypse and Forged in the Dark games tend to only use D6s. Same for Ten Candles and Fiasco and I'm sure others.

For serious miniatures, I haven't seen any. There doesn't seem to be that much variety of style out there.

I have these "Fantasy Creatures", though. They aren't great, basically army man quality, but they get the job done for your run-of-the-mill creeps. As for your players, ask them to bring their own minis. It'll be like $10 tops to get a Reaper mini, and they'll be able to get something that really reminds them of their character.

Then, there's always standees:
