Nobody plays UNO anymore. DOS is all the rage these days!
Can't wait for TRES.
Yup. We’d road trip up to Canada every summer. There are a little set of roadside attractions we’d stop by pretty frequently.
We drove from Denver to Seattle one year and stopped at Yellowstone and the Tetons on the way.
We had lots of little road trips down to the Smokey Mountains.
We had a lot of little car games we played from eye spy to roadside bingo. These were enjoyed by the siblings. My mom would read to us a lot as well.
As an adult I have driven the Maine or Providence to Indianapolis route a ton of times for Christmas or Thanksgiving. We went from Providence to NYC many times and Providence to DC area a bunch. For most of those there are little places we like to stop but it is mostly just driving to get there.
I highly suggest you invest in the British Counties edition of Mapominos. I never realised how ignorant of most counties I was until this fantastic game. It might seem incredibly sad, but it's a really fun way to learn counties and countries...Mapominos...

G-guys?
Amazon ok?

My kid is only 4, so right now I'm just starting out by having maps up as wall art.
In the hallway, we have a city map where I've circled all her favorite places - school, parks, our house, Daddy's house, friends' houses, etc - then we also have a state map and circled off places we've been. In her room, she has a big world map that is laminated so we can draw on it.
Out and about I always stop at map posts in parks, and have her figure out where we are and where we want to go.
She really has no concept of perspective and thinks going across town is further than going across the globe :) I figure it's simply a good start to begin thinking about the bigger world.
When we drive around town I give her those car bingo games where you're on the lookout for certain things like fences, flagpoles, schools, etc. It makes her pay attention, and she's starting to notice where we are, where we've been, and that there's different ways to get places. I'm proud of her observational skills right now and she's also picking up on street signs and rules of driving.
Back in the olden days we used to use something very much like this.
Most people just use smartphones nowadays, though. Not having to carry anything extra, and having a GM-level helper, is very nice.
I have a similar portable travel chessboard where the pieces also fit inside.
Looks like this: https://www.amazon.com/QuadPro-Magnetic-Travel-Folding-Educational/dp/B06XXGPNML/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=chess+set+portable+magnetic&qid=1566782263&s=gateway&sr=8-5
btw you should totally grab one of these https://www.amazon.com/Chess-Checkbook-Magnetic-Travel-Set/dp/B004G0S39K/ref=sr_1_28?keywords=travel+chess+board+pocket&qid=1569519347&s=gateway&sr=8-28
or these https://www.amazon.com/WE-Games-Magnetic-Pocket-Travel/dp/B07KV8H7FS/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=travel+chess+board+pocket&qid=1569519395&s=gateway&sr=8-6
for just over ten bucks, this has been a super worthy investment for me. it lets you read those crazy complicated lines really simply just by following along real quick. also you can read and follow along in public without looking like a crazy person, it's much more subtle then a full size board. also, i mean, it fits easily in the front pouch of your backpack or your back pocket
I've got this and like it. Super light weight, very flat / easy to pack, and the magnets keep the pieces in place while being jostled around in a pocket or pack so you don't have to finish a game all at once. To boot, it's not expensive.

Magnetic travel chess
Not the exact one but close enough
Magnetic travel chess sets.

Ok Play is a travel game that plays like freeform connect four and can play 2 to 4. It might be neat to make your own tiles and paint/embroider/decorate them however you like. Lots of artistic possibilities with such a blank slate.
You could try something like this: US Chess Checkbook Magnetic Travel Chess Set - by US Chess Federation https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004G0S39K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_OvAxybFRV17JW
Not really
It is available right in the publisher's Amazon store:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UXVA7OU?m=A3FLX8MAIVFP25
or even cheaper from Miniature Market (see my other comment in this thread).
Great! You're getting some good books. I'm sure you'll be pleased.
Do you have a setup for following along with chess books? Do you use a board, a travel set, your computer, a tablet, &c.? Following along with a game book is important to snap those patterns into your brain.
We used to travel about that far every Christmas break to visit relatives when I was a kid. Here is my advice.
Auto Bingo. Count telephone poles.
Those are the ones!
Pit's only £3.76 on amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Winning-Moves-13604-Top-Cards/dp/B001U0NYY8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1383080232&sr=8-1&keywords=pit
For some reason it comes in that terrible packaging. My version looks cool and old-worldy.
Perudo is dead cheap too;

They already sell a wooden board like this:
Scrabble Deluxe Travel Edition https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CJDRHMT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_SpEqDbR0GSBW6
You could imitate the same design or adapt it to your needs.
Thanks! I have this one. Just got it, but the magnets feel strong and it folds down to a reasonable size. This will be the first trip with it. There is a smaller/lighter version from the same company, but this one makes it nice and easy to see piece placement.
The official sequel to UNO has arrived! Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076MMCQWW/
it's real btw. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076MMCQWW/
On Amazon. Exactly this one: Yellow Mountain Imports Magnetic Travel Chess Set
I have a really nice marble set that my wife bought me as a present, but the one that I use the most (and that travels well) is this one that's under $10. Fairly small and nothing fancy, but I like it.
I use this board with these pieces for table play and home practice, and I use this board for out-and-about games.
As for what I'd most like to own, I think I'd ultimately wish to have a large lifesize board in my yard someday, but they're a pretty penny.
It seems like a magnetic travel set would be much cheaper and perform the same function of keeping the pawns and pieces in place:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XXGPNML/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_IPa4Cb15947ZW
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XXGPNML/
This was my first board, I upgraded to a nicer wood one when I got more serious. Don't sweat it too much, 30$ is a decent price.
That is a neat board! On the low end, there's this.
actually I think it's more like this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002TTS9A8
Another take, $400 on the nose via Amazon, although you'd probably get cheaper via Cardhaus or MiniatureMarket:
Don't forget these, way better than paper money:
If this were your library, I'd be highly impressed. Something for everyone, really good value on the fillers, a wide array of mechanics and game categories, rounded out by a few flexible-player count, beautiful table-presence games (Tribes, Pandemic and Red Planet).
Not that names matter but you've also got a who's-who of designers in there; Bauza, Knizia, Cathala, Rosenberg, Faidutti, Dorra, Leacock and Chvatl. Not bad.

Our absolute favorite <$20 travel games have been for a while:
Here is a Travel size set that is a little less expensive.

[Road Trip Bingo!](http://www.Green.com/ Auto Backseat Bingo Pack of 4 Bingo Cards Great For Family Vactions Car Rides and Road Trips https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B004GVVYTA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ErroDbFX34JV6)
I live in a very small town lmao, I've only ever seen the cheapo flat cardboard chess sets that come in boxes or decorative chess sets that are borderline tacky. Took a little searching but I'm pretty sure I found the same exact set here on Amazon.
I carry a perudo boxed set around to most of my magic events. Not only is it a great game in and of itself, but then I've got colour appropriate dice for each colour (if you pretend White is Yellow...)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004G0S39K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_6ruVBb7YBCKN8
If you're ever making a random amazon order here's the set on there. I think it's more expensive, but it does have the amazon convenience factor.
I heartily recommend this biggish one, the magnets are strong enough that the pieces stay in place when you hold the board upside down
this weighs 0.8 oz
