That's honestly a pretty heavy ask on your friend's part, especially on such short notice. Wes Anderson is known for a visual style heavily reminiscent of the mid-20th Century, with rather European bent. Rich textures, vibrant colours, vintage props showcased in loving detail, and symmetry, symmetry, symmetry. Every frame he puts on the screen is a postcard. His movies would honestly be totally insufferably twee if they weren't actually incredibly good.

As for a party... I'd see if anyone you know owns a record player like this Crosley and get some old records from the 40s and 50s (if not soundtracks from Wes Anderson's films).

I have to second literally everything you just said. My girlfriend got me one of these turntables with the Thrice Alchemy Index and I absolutely loved it, but was worried what it would do to the vinyl over time. After a ton of research, I ended up with the Pro-ject bundle. The speakers also have Bluetooth, so when we entertain, that’s our music hub.

Hey guys! I have a Victrola VTA-200B (link below). Sadly I didn't do my research when I bought my first record player and I got one with internal speakers, now I always run my record player through the external speakers I already own but the internal speakers can't be "turned off", I can turn them all the way down but can't shut them down they are just really quiet. This causes some interference and an odd sound distortion on the lighter records I own. Do any you have any ideas on how to shut off the internal speakers so that they dont cause vibrations anymore? Orbit, Carbon or RP1???
The Pro-Ject deck is great. The Pro-Ject Debut iii last year's model is on sale at MusicDirect for exactly $299 as well. I have this turntable and find it to be excellent and balanced and built solid like a brick wall.
But I wonder with the finicky little anti-skate weight and the changing speed by removing the platter and moving the belt if always suggesting the entry level audiophile choice is the right recommendation to be making to new folks.
I think the MusicHall USB-1 and/or the Audio Technica ATLP120 are totally underrated in these parts, easier to setup and have built in phono preamps as well not that you need that with the Cambridge amp.

Those are both around $250. What you get is changing the speed with a button without having to move a belt around and easy to use pitch + anti skating controls, removable headshell for changing out cartridges easily and finally yes a cueing lever. They are not built quite as solid as the U-Turn or the famous Debut decks. But they are not cheapo and feel substantial if you ever spent time with them.
So that is $599 so far plenty of good money to buy a pair of decent speakers.
You can come in under budget and get a Stereophile magazine recommended pair of Klipsch Synergy B-20 bookshelf speakers for $179 on newegg here:

No. I have a $20 one right here.^1 It's absolute trash. The motor is too weak so it doesn't spin at a consistent rate, the needle is made of, like, a paperclip that scratches my records, and the cartridge is a hunk of plastic that sounds like wet garbage.
The sound of record players, being analog devices, are very dependant on the build quality. Digital devices reproduce audio with perfect fidelity on even the cheapest units. This is not debatable. Digital signals cannot have noise.
If you like vinyl for the art, or the nostalgia, or whatever that's great, but they produce objectively lower-quality audio, which I can measure on my oscilloscope.

Here's a headshell that will work, and a cartridge
You will need to download and alignment protractor from VinylEngine and maybe get and overhang gauge if you want overhang to be spot on.
I haven't used the Shure cartridge I linked too, but it's pretty well regarded.
You might want to look for a turntable with counterweight and decent anti-skating. Just by looks of it (because I don't know this TT), this one lacks the proper characteristics (as can be read in the sidebar). In the sidebar you can also find some great budget set-ups.
If you're not hung up on vintage gear, and you just want to plug and play without figuring out what cart to get and how to replace and align it, there are definitely some good budget models to start with. Audio Technica springs to mind. But even the "better" manufacturers offer good TT's for just a wee bit more than this Sony. You might want to check this Music Hall, if having a USB output is important to you.

There's absolutely no need to buy a used record player. I burned myself buying a used one when I started. Anyhow. I'd spend most of that money on a turntable, so you have a good solid base to build upon in the future. A Pro-Ject Debut Carbon is juuuust within budget. Amazon It's quite a serious turntable actually. It has a carbon arm and a 2M Red cartridge, which itself can be easily upgraded to a 2M Blue in the future. Maybe you could find a good used Phono Box MM to go with that. I have one on my RPM 1 Carbon and I'm quite happy with it, despite usually being fairly reasonable. Having said that.. it's surprisingly expensive on Amazon in the UK, but they can be found on eBay. I'm afraid you just have to work with what you already got when it comes to speakers or headphones. I have enjoyed the project line in the past. I had a project essential before. It is a pretty TT and it is simple. It would however require you to buy a amplifier or a preamp. It doesn't have any of the bells and whistles like auto stop and start. I think its around 200 quid.

Recently I bought a Denon DP-300F Fully Automatic Analog Turntable. It has a built in preamp if I wanted to use it and is fully automatic. I upgraded the needle to a Shure M97E and have fallen in love with it. In a way I enjoy it more then I did my Project turntable for ease of use.

I ordered my first two
vinylsvinylrecords this week. You'll never guess what albums I went with.So as of now, I'm just getting records for the artwork. However pretty soon I would like to get a turntable. But I have no goddamn clue as to what to look for and what not to look for. I have a couple of videos I want to watch later on youtube about getting a turntable but their 20 minutes each so when I find some time ill watch them.
But for now, I would like your guys' help. Assume I know nothing about turntables (because I don't) and explain how to set up a turntable and that type of thing. Also cleaning records because that seems like a big part of it.
EDIT: I've been researching and it looks like the AT-LP60 is the best choice for beginners. Very good price and I've only heard good things. What do you guys think?

It's just that the USB feature is more meant to be marketed on the same level as Crosleys. It's supposed to be a cool feature to make it sellable. So in the eyes of a consumer, it sounds like a good idea to be able to digitalize your collection for nostalgia/whatever.
The problem is that there's a lot of quality cutting as having a high quality built in preamp (basically what it is) is very hard to have at a low price point. There are USB turntables that aren't total crap, say the Pro-Ject Essential II Phono USB, but it certainly isn't worth a $100 increase from the list price of $300. So you end up with low end tables like this and this
Jensen. I was relatively broke when I started the project and needed a well reviewed, compact, inexpensive TT. This one worked out well after returning the first. I tore off the cap and ground down some areas to make it flush inside a cavity. It has a built in speaker that can be turned on and off (this is why I drilled holes in the back) and I also ran wire down the "S" for 2 decent quality speakers that I already owned. It sounds surpisingly well for such a cheap TT. If I had to do it all over again I would save up for a worthy one.

Any opinions on the Music Hall usb-1 Record Turntable (https://www.amazon.com/Music-Hall-usb-1-Record-Turntable/dp/B004EDXCFE) as a secondary, cheap-but-not-too-cheap (office :)) turntable? It's not an audiophile environment, sound is output to semi-cheap PC speakers. I'm just looking for something with counterweight/not too much tracking force so that I don't damage my records (I wouldn't t want to play the Crossley/LP60 lottery).
To me it looks like the choices come down to the Music Hall player, the U-Turn Orbit Basic, and maybe the "House of Marley Natural Bamboo" (except that I kinda hate that design). Old 2nd-hand market players are probably out of consideration because I'm looking for a built-in preamp.
Music Hall is $50 cheaper than the Orbit Basic with preamp. Any opinions on not getting that one over the Orbit? The Orbit cartridge has a lower tracking force, but I don't think I'm worried about the AT-3600L on the Music Hall player. (I don't think I'd hear a difference between either cartridge on my office speakers.)

I left mine spinning for about 6 hours in dead wax one night, so I bought a Q-up and haven't looked back. It's kind of a bitch to "install" (I say "install" because it's just really sticky tape), but it works great and I can smoke & space out all I want now.
Just so you know, you can install a QUP on most turntables. It lifts the arm up when it hits the end. This alleviates the "vinyl keeps playing when I fall asleep" issue. I have one on my Pro-Ject and it works really well.

I usually do these "boxes" where I just fill it with random stuff. Last week I did two different ones that had things like: 2 or 3 CD's they liked, A T- Shirt(I like giving people wind breakers though), Stickers, a Hip Hop related card. I made one that said "Bish don't kill my vibe" and when you open it it had "because it's your birthday" another one that said "Sorry to interupt but __ had the best birthdays of all time" with tickets to a show/ wherever they like to eat/itunes gift card/or money, a pack of ironlak markers because backpackersss, and essencially rolling papers and little jar of cannabis. (I'm a girl so this is why it's so thoughtful lol) If not just the paintings, I can't draw but I like doing stencils on canvas, they look really nice.
Well basically a set up is puzzle you can build up over time. Planar 2 is a solid table that you wouldn't need to upgrade for years, don't know if it comes with a cover though. It is a solid table built around delivering the best sound from the cartridge to the amp. Now one big part of how your records will sound is the cart, the one the planar 2 comes with is totally fine for start but you will want to upgrade it pretty soon. I would recommend you to take a look at this Pro-ject Debut Carbon Esprit. Mainly because it is more bang for the buck imo (electronic speed switch and speed control, carbon arm, acrylic platter and a way better cartridge), but that is totally an opinion.
Now for the rest of the set up I would suggest buying the preamp separate. For example this Cambridge phono preamp is a solid starting point. There are two reasons for this, you can easily switch it to a new one down the line and you can get some money back for it.
The second one is that you can start by getting powered speakers, for example these Audio engine A5+ and down the line upgrade to an amp and bookshelf speakers. Powered speakers are a totally valid option nowadays and these will give a detailed sound with the table. They are also way easier to get your cash back when moving forward.
What I linked up there is a pretty solid setup focusing in sound for a pretty rough 1000 when done trough amazon.

Earlier today I went out to BestBuy and bought my first turntable! I walked in there planning on buying the Audio-Technica LP120. But I ended up buying this.
I have heard that this one is a really great table also (if it's not better), and I got it for $50 less than the LP120. However, I do have to wait about 6 days until it comes to my local store because it is a special order (none of the stores in the surrounding 250 miles have it either). I'm excited to have it come in and for me to start using it!

Compared to the other option, I think this one won't sound any worse or better. What I like most about it is that its cheap and has everything you need. You've only got a couple records right now and it sounds like you're still not sure if you want to get into vinyl, so why spend a lot? If you find yourself buying more records, you can upgrade pieces of the system as you wish.
The cassette deck has issues, but unless you have cassettes, its not a big deal. Could also be a simple fix of cleaning the insides. The CD player is a nice add on. The speakers may need to be refoamed, which isn't difficult, but for the $85 asking price you should still have money left over for a new set of speakers.
For this system, you'll probably need a new needle, you can either replace the needle (if you can find a replacement for the cartridge) or buy a new cartridge (which will have a new needle). There are some great, cheap options this is a popular option around here. You'll also probable need a 45 adapter to be able to play your records. If the guy doesn't include the cables, you'll need a speaker wire and RCA cables to hook up the CD player and Cassette deck.

To add, the system you referenced will be more difficult to upgrade if you decide to get into vinyl. The reason is because the turntable has a built in phono preamp (if you read the sidebar, typically these types of turntables are considered subpar in quality) and the receiver probably doesn't have a Phono Input (since the turntable has it). So if you look to replace the turntable to something better (which won't have a phono preamp), you'll need to buy a preamp to continue to use the receiver or buy a new receiver that has a phono input. The speakers are a good budget pair that get good reviews around here.

Honestly it’s more of a 5-in-one, it’s got a turntable, a CD player, a Cassette player, it’s Bluetooth connectable, and it plays radio. 100% worth the 70.
Edit: never mind on that record player. I guess I’ve just been EXTREMELY lucky with mine apparently. Looking at the reviews, it’s gotten nothing but 1 stars in the last year. People having issues left and right to where it breaks within a few months. Mines been working fine for a little over half a year with no problem, but it looks like more people are having issues than not.

My little Crosley unit works great, and even has a thumb drive port to rip records to MP3. It has built-in speakers, and an Extra speaker jacks in the back, so I have speakers around the room. It also plays cds and has an SD card reader. The record player does all 33,45,78 speeds

As for CDs, any Walmart will have CD players for next to nothing. I started collecting CDs at a young age and have thousands now. I'm debating getting lifted tomorrow and just feeling all this music I got. I went for Orchestras and Jazz. Was looking for anything with soul. The first one I said yes to I got because it's a group of black guys smiling in different directions and a white guy STARING AT YOU.
I just got a Crosley C200a off Amazon for $190ish and, compared to the shitty Jensen ($40) I had, it's amazing. Crosley's suitcase players have a horrible reputation but I read every review I could find on the C200 and it was all positive and overall, for the price, it's a really good pick. No 78rpm setting and not automatic functions are the downsides, but I don't have 78's and I also enjoy dropping the needle. I'll probably upgrade the cartridge soon though. Good luck!

Look around, there is a fully auto Pioneer that maybe you should read up on for $120. You aren't getting quality at this price point though, which of course you are a stickler for.
How important is wireless going to be for you? While I don't doubt that there's a product that'll work for you, I can't think of one at the moment and I'm certain it's not going to sound particularly good.
Also I was mostly confused about the bluetooth record player part, do you already have a vinyl collection? It doesn't seem to make sense to buy a record player only to use bluetooth.
Quick Edit: Take a look at these Klipsch perhaps? Speakers themselves look like they'll be below budget, but if you want it with the matched turntable it'll be over. As far as these lifestyle speakers go though, Klipsch is the only one I can currently think of that's worth buying.

Now neither one will be amazing, but they're the right type of design and will be better money spent than the LP60 or that Sony.
It's popular because of its price, but it's not one of the best. I just don't think it has a place in a list of good turntables. A counterweight is not optional if you don't want to ruin your records over time.

A vinyl of the gods. Yes, it's definitely a very substantial record, and I don't regret the decision to get the special edition at all, it's a beautiful record, both in content and aesthetics, but I love just being able to chill out and listen for a while before flipping. I really shouldn't bitch though. I just got Deflorate by TBDM on vinyl and the whole album all the way through is just over 30 mins, so even one of the two Inferi records is about the same length. It's pretty rare to find an hour long metal album that is full of great tracks.
As amazing as it is, I think my audio setup is holding the album's sound potential back. I'm using this hooked up to this.

I feel kind of superficial making this post because obviously there will always be someone who needs something more than me, but here we go..
The other day, someone I had recently gotten very close to passed away. It was an odd friendship because she was very young (maybe only halfway through high school) and I am 20-going-on-21, and nature would tell us to hate each other because we shared the same traumatic stories of an ex-boyfriend, but somehow we bonded over music. She would play records for me and I was so impressed at how mature her music taste was. I felt so relaxed and understood listening to records with her; it was no wonder we became fast friends despite a tumultuous past. I understood her for her personality, grief, pain, why she needed out .. all through the silence we shared listening to her record player.
She committed suicide four days ago. I never got to tell her I was sorry for how I treated her before we became friends, back when I held so much disdain for her due to us sharing a past romantic interest, things I can't really blame her for but I did. I feel like the only way I can connect with her and apologize is through record player and records, but I don't have the courage (nor the place) to ask her mother for the one she owned. And all I can think about is that she was so fucking young.
I'm going through a low point in my life. My college career is almost over but I still have no idea where I'm going with it, financial bills are piling up and my parents are using their retirement fund to pay for schooling that I'm just so damn unsure of, I work 3 jobs but see none of my money, I don't know if I have any other friends who liked me as much as she did, and my anxiety gets worse and worse and what makes it so much more painful is my old friend, not knowing where she is or if she ever got the resolve she needed.
All I want to do is listen to records.

Do I need a specific kind of headshell and cartridge for my turntable, or can I use any MM cartridge and any headshell? I had my eyes on this cartridge, but wasn't sure if this could only be used with Technica turntables. I was looking at this headshell as well. You may be able to get a cheaper setup if you shop for vintage equipment on your local craigslist. At a minimum you'd need Table -> preamp -> speaker amp -> speakers or some variation of that(Powered speakers don't require an external amp and some tables have a preamp built in).
edit: If you want to get a table with a built in pre-amp I've seen a few people say good things about the Musichall usb1. Although it's not commonly recommended from this sub.

I think I would see if I could score an SL-1200, a pair of Yamaha NS-1000s or Pioneer HPM-100s, and spend whatever's left on the best receiver I could find.
New:
TT--Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC Esprit. Or, perhaps better yet (if you're willing to go over budget), a base Debut Carbon DC and upgrade the needle to 2M Blue--no cartridge swap required!
Speakers--SVS Prime Towers from the SVS outlet. These consistently appear on "best speakers under $x" lists and they sound phenomenal for the price. They can be used without a subwoofer, and the trial period + warranty that SVS offers makes it risk-free to audition them in the room where you'll actually be using them.
Receiver--Assuming you've gone the Esprit route, you'd have $50 to play with on a $1,500 budget, which means you're still going to have to go used on the amp. I'd hit up as many Goodwills as often as possible in search of a good receiver. I've found several really solid units for $20-80 at Goodwill and other thrift shops. If you get the base Debut Carbon DC but decide to upgrade to Blue down the road, for about $200 I like the Yamaha RX-V line. Affordable, decent power, sounds nice, digital friendly, and would allow you to expand your setup to home theater at some point if you wish. Of course, that will necessitate the use of a phono pre-amp, but the ART DJpre II can be had for under $50 and it's great.

The only other recommendation I would make is consider if you want to/can save for the DC Espirit to have built in automatic speed change, better speed regulation, and an ugraded platter.
You can always add these features on after the fact with the base-model Debut Carbon; via a speed box and getting the acrylic platter to replace the standard metal one.

I need a complete system. This will be used strictly for music in a 400ish sq ft family room. I want a turntable and the ability to use Bluetooth to stream music from the kids phones and possibly networked so that we can stream all of my FLAC files from my server.
Mid field most likely. This is a 400 sq ft room. Not looking to blow the doors off the walls, but able to listen clearly throughout the room. Also tile floors if it makes a difference.
I don't have any gear for this system yet, but have been looking at Pro-Ject - Debut Carbon Esprit SB turntable and I was also looking at Pioneer Elite SX-N30 receiver. Nothing set in stone and definitely willing to take recommendations. I have an Eddie Current Super 7 headphone amp and a set of HD 800's. I would love to match that kind of sound quality, but probably not on my budget.

Music and as a family we listen to most everything. Classic rock, heavy metal and thrash, old country music, show tunes, musicals, classical, etc, etc.....

Not sure if you're still looking, but I use the Jensen JTA-222. I've had it for almost 3 years now and aside from replacing the needle from general wear, it's held up really well.
The reason I bought it was because I knew it wouldn't ruin my records, always check the tracking force before buying a fixed weight arm.
It won't sound good with the built in speakers, so I'd recommend getting some nice speakers to go with your new player.

A turntable used for travel is a bit tough. I don't think that many are made, with the exception of Crosley which has a pretty bad reputation.
If portability and cost were the two main factors I would probably grab one of these and a portable speaker. I have no idea how good/bad these products are but that's where I would start.

I have an old record player(which is dead, sadly), which was an all-in-one with a large hardwood cabinet. I'd like to retrofit the old cabinet with a modern turntable, speakers and a tube amp.
I'm looking for a turntable which will fit right now, and I have a dimensional constraint- the turntable can only be 14" deep. It can be up to 26" wide, and as tall as you like, but the cabinet is only 14" deep(IE if you are looking straight down into the chamber, the turntable can be very wide along the x-axis, but we only have 14" to work with on the Y-axis).
What is a good, high quality turntable that is 14" deep or less?
There is plenty of space elsewhere in the cabinet for the amplifier, pre-amp(if necessary), and for good, modern speakers. The cubby for the most important component just has an annoying constraint, and one which is hard to search for. I'm looking now, and it seems that TEAC has a few models in that size range, but I have not heard great things about their products.

Here are a few well-rated options:
Teac TN 300 - $260+ (built in phono preamp)
U-turn Audio Orbit Basic - $180-$250 (you can choose to have an integrated phono preamp if you want, but you are going to need one if your receiver/ amp lacks one)
There are also some from Audio-Technica and Pro-Ject, and it's good to consider those options, too. Just do your research with whatever you choose before you buy. Good luck and give us an update with what you end up doing!

This one here. I knew it was trash from the beginning but it was a birthday present from some good friends of mine.
I want to get a record player for my girlfriend, but on the guide of recommended entry-level players there are no recommendations below 100 dollars and I really can't afford anything more than 60 dollars. I have been mostly looking at a Victrola like this. I have heard that the speakers aren't great, but I expected that from a all-in-one below 100 bucks. Is there anything better I could get for a comparable price? Does anyone have experience with this particular record player and is it worth buying?

Nice things:
It’s got a nice lil handle and comes with a power cable and built in speakers and can use those speakers to play audio from Bluetooth, the turntable, or an aux cord, has three speed settings, and automatically stops (if you don’t want to play the speakers loudly there’s always the headphone port as well)
Breakability:
As a side note if you do buy this one, be careful with the lever that you can use to lift the stick that holds the needle (pardon my terminology) because I actually broke mine pretty quickly (it’s not bad quality or anything, I was just an idiot and like latched the needle down on its stand (because it has a latch for the needle for travel purposes) and left the latch closed and then used too much force to try to push the lever that lifts it and now I can’t use the lever and I have to manually lift it when I want to take it off a record which I think is less safe for records but OH WELL
All in all this record player is acceptable quality for leisurely usage and I recommend it but with a little bit more care than I’ve put into mine; best of luck and anyone else that reads this can argue if they’d like, I think it’s a nice and one of the most affordable solutions for someone like me (or at least it was when I was shopping around for a player)

This is the only record that does this. It’s also not scratched. It’s a two disc LP and it both discs do it. Lastly, the record is a 33 and 1/3 RPM, which is what the player is set to. Any ideas? It almost seems like the chorus skips more than the rest. Here is the link to what is happening. TYIA

Its pretty nice. Seems to be the OEM of the lp120 without the 78 rpm. I got mine for $80 last August. I think it was a pricing error on Amazon. Only issue I have is that the plastic lid (dust cover?) scratches insanely easily.

Thanks for the response! Just to clarify, would something like the Crosley only damage records when used heavily, or is it just really bad on the records in general? I can't imagine my fiancee will turn this into a hobby; it'll probably just be something she'd love to have on during lazy saturdays or while company is over. So she's what I would consider a very casual listener. If only a small amount of usage wouldn't damage the records, then I think she wouldn't mind (and would probably prefer that I save the money anyways). I totally understand, however, if you think that kind of player is crap though. I think a player like this one looks very classy, and might be better. I'm unsure. If you know of any good products that look similar to this, I would love to check them out.

A good entry level turntable I will recommend is the Audio-Technica LP-120. Audio-Technica is a pretty reliable brand. They also have an LP-60, which is pretty much a cheaper version of this one.

Hi - Need help deciding as i'm new to the vinyl world and am not confident in what I'm choosing. Looking for a relatively budget/simple set up for the room/small living room. Trying to stay under 400 for the whole thing. Prefer the powered speakers as I've had bad experiences with cheap pre-amps. Looking to make speakers bluetooth compatible via Echo Dot.

I saw in the recommended turntable list the Crosley C100A and the Crosley C200A and i'm thinking of pairing one of them with the Edifier R1280DB powered bookshelf speakers and i'm wondering if anyone has any experience with these?
I have a small space and i like the optical input so i can also use them with my TV, they seem to have great reviews, i'm just wondering what you guys think for someone looking for an all-in-one solution on a budget (budget hasn't been determined yet but i'm thinking less than $500)

This is the one i bought. Ive hsd it for about 5 months now and i love it. I know next to nothing about turntables tho, but the sound quality is pretty good and its super easy to use :)
The hardest price point to buy a new TT is in the $100 to $250 range. For $100, the best thing you can get is an AT-LP60 and the great redditors of r/vinyl will tell you not to get one, check the side bar, and buy vintage. That's good advice for budget spending; however, you could spend weeks searching craigslist or scouring pawn shops. My local craigslist tends to be lacking in selection and is overpriced. For $250, it's the AT-LP120 which is generally well received, but not very cheap.
Using Amazon, the Numark TTUSB or the Stanton T52B may be options that are a step up from the AT-LP60.

I know turntables like these are frown upon around these parts, but it's a good beginner turntable imo. The build in speakers are good, but don't expect Beats quality lol. I own one and enjoying every minute of it.
Vinyl is meant to be listened to on a turntable. If you rip them, you won't be nearly as satisfied than if you bought a CD copy or an iTunes copy.
Don't even consider doing rips on cheap turntables like Crosley's or this.
Sorry if I'm sounding harsh, but ripping vinyl is no easy task either. You have to babysit the whole process to make sure it doesn't skip, etc. When it's done you will want to remove cracks/pops, hisses, etc. That distorts the audio slightly.
