Was thinking the same thing.

Here's a cheap 4K Camera with good reviews that looks like it can be put on a chest mount of helmet, gopro style

Edit: It actually appears to use the same form factor and be compatible with all gopro accessories. How have I never heard of this before?

u/MtnFreq · 15 pointsr/functionalprint

It’s just a case and clear protective lens:

D&F Black CNC Aluminum Alloy... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06W9FW894?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

I hopefully plan on making some YouTubes!

DO IT. It's an absolute lifeline. Where a helmet. https://smile.amazon.com/AKASO-Underwater-Waterproof-Camcorder-Accessories/dp/B076DD5JNS

That's the one I have now and it comes with a lockdown strap that I use to attach it to my helmet.

u/BillEastwickPhotos · 12 pointsr/AskPhotography

Or just go for the Hero 7 Black for the extra $30 over budget. Totally worth it for the stabilization alone.

Knockoff GoPro so you can get footy for the boys:

(With $30 leftover for a memory card!)

u/DesignNomad · 7 pointsr/gopro

It's fake. The real one uses star hex screws, and has a large black plastic plate in the lens area. This is a knockoff and will have lower image quality.

What you got looks like this $15 knockoff.

I have a ContourROAM. It's water-resistant (plenty good for rain) and idiotproof (single switch on/off). Records in full 1080p. There's a newer version, the ContourROAM 2, which is slightly more expensive. I'm happy with my camera though.

Camera, Helmet mount, and you'll want a microSD card (I recommend 32GiB)

Contour recently announced they're going out of business, but another company has bought all the assets and is planning to resurrect them. Other people like GoPro too, and I've seen people with those cameras. Couldn't hurt to check them out.

I picked up everything off Amazon (other than the camera which I bought 2nd hand off Craigslist):

A few years back I sat on this idea and finally went with a Canon ELPH 100HS. It has great low light response, and I used it for a decent amount of diving (photos and video) as well as shooting northern lights before I finally got a DSLR and was VERY impressed with how well it worked for a little P&S camera. It makes a hell of a B-camera if you're into shooting video or vlogging.

As an aside, another diver friend of mind uses something like this bag-type housing and he seems to really like and trust it. It might be worth researching for snorkeling. You could always take some shots, and pass it up to the divemaster so it's not in the water with you for the entire session (minimized exposure is definitely a plus). All I'd recommend is to do is fill it with air and test it in the bathtub for a bit before your trip and again the morning before the session to make sure it's secure.

I hear nothing but good stories out of Bonaire, so have fun!

u/MoogleMan3 · 4 pointsr/gopro

Nice deal. I'm getting one of these as soon as my tax refund comes in. Hopefully the sale is still around.

Edit: Same price on amazon, and B&H Photo. Also ABT; they have the best deal for me. Free extra battery and head mount, no tax.

For a while I used an older Android phone as a dashcam and just recently bought the Gear Pro. Below are some alternatives:

u/thatguyron · 4 pointsr/photography

I have an a6000 that I've used backpacking in Iceland and the Grand Canyon, and I like it for extended hikes like that. Check out my instagram (@summitviews) to see some of the results (about 2/3 of the photos there are from the a6000). But keep in mind that I don't use the kit lens.

For Iceland, I also brought an underwater housing for it, but I only ended up using it a few times because I guess we were lucky with the weather.

u/Streetiebird · 3 pointsr/Beginning_Photography

If you're looking for something which can go underwater, then you'll either need a fairly expensive and bulky underwater housing, or one of the few models which can go underwater on their own.

I would recommend either, the Nikon 1 AW1, which can go underwater without a housing. Though only two lenses are capable of going underwater.

Or the Sony A6000 and an underwater housing for it.

The Nikon mirrorless system doesn't have as big of a sensor as its peers, but they're very small and light.

The Sony mirrorless cameras are pretty awesome, have a normal-sized sensor, and are lightweight compared to a full DSLR with a mirror. If I was going to buy a new system I would either get the A6000 or the more expensive A6300.

Hope this helps!

This is my favorite pole by far! I own it and love it. I wrote a review on this sub if you're interested too.

u/travellingmonk · 3 pointsr/CampingandHiking

I carry a pro DSLR with 70-200 and a 24-70... the body, lenses etc... tip the scales around 9lbs so most people wouldn't call it "portable"

I also carry a Panasonic Lumix TS5 waterproof/rugged camera. Most of the time, this is the one I have handy in a pocket. It takes decent stills and video, but the best part is that I don't worry about it getting damaged from being dropped, or dunked during a water crossing (my DSLR is in a drybag in my pack if I'm going over water). It's great when I'm out during the winter, easy enough to use without taking off my gloves. I use it in the ocean when snorkeling, kayaking, ice climbing, really great camera.

However, today I'd pick up an Olympus TG-4 instead of the Lumix TS6. The TG-4 is a much better all-around camera, on par with most point and shoots now. But more importantly, it supports RAW format which the TS6 doesn't.

We had a set of GoPros... but we never really got any interesting footage. And while I didn't mind editing video, the audio was always annoyingly bad so I had to add a soundtrack, and mixing isn't my forte. So one is sitting in a closet, gave the other away.

I've thought about getting an RX100, one of my friends posts some awesome footage from his alpine hikes taken with the RX100. I'd consider one, but I do like the benefits of the waterproof/tough cameras.

Good luck!

u/Wallcrawler62 · 3 pointsr/photography

I have an earlier model Contour ROAM. I think it was about $140 and came with a waterproof case and some other mounts. It works pretty well and I like the shape better than the GoPro.

> there really isn't a way to get external audio

That's not true. Buy the skeleton housing, USB microphone adapter, and any microphone (wired or wireless) that outputs to a 3.5mm plug (I use this one) and you're good to go. Much better sound quality than the crappy built in mic.

u/kickstand · 3 pointsr/photography

I have used a DiCAPAC WPS10 with digital bodies. I expect it is the right size for your film cameras.

The problem you're gonna have, I think, is advancing the film. The bags tend to be pretty stiff.

u/thedoomfinger · 3 pointsr/bicycling

Don't get something stealthy, get something super conspicuous. I never get harassed now that I have a big, doofy camera sticking out the top of my helmet. Amazon has some cheap Gopro knockoffs that work well for commutes. I'm using the $60 "FitFort" model, which came with a mount, waterproof housing, and four batteries.

Looking for a decent point and shoot digital camera that can go underwater, shoots video, and is pretty durable. Something similar to the Olympus TG-4. Someone recommended it to me but I would like to compare other products. Thank you!!

Claro, cuando el agua hace contacto con el lente de la gopro, la imagen se distorsiona/aumenta (el agua funciona como otro lente). Con el dome, separas el agua del lente y así evitas la distorsión. Este es el que tengo:

But I bought a long long time ago for even less than it is now.

I would recommend a knock off GoPro like this: https://www.amazon.com/AKASO-EK7000-Sports-Waterproof-Camcorder/dp/B01HGM33HG/

For shooting 4K60 video, the camera you'll need is a Panasonic GH5, and that'll run you $2397.99 for the body with a 12-60mm lens, or $1697.99 for the body only if you want to choose a different lens. A really good lens for the GH5 is the 12-35mm f2.8, and that costs $897.99. Another option is to get a cheap prime lens. The 25mm f1.7 is popular and it costs $147.99, but then you can't zoom unless you switch to a different lens.

If we drop down to 1080p60, you get a lot more options. Again here, I recommend an interchangeable lens camera with stabilization for handheld shooting. In that case, the Panasonic G85 is a solid choice. It comes with a lens, and the cost is $797.99. That camera does 4K at 30fps, and 1080p up to 60 frames per second.

Moving on to cameras with a faster frame rate, you can go with a Sony A6300 for $898.00 and that does 1080 up to 120fps.

On the really cheap end of cameras for 4K60 is the GoPro Hero 7 Black but in my opinion that cameras more restrictive for this, and I would skip the 4K60 for a 1080p60 before I would do that. It will do HD up to 240fps though.

Avoid cameras like the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema camera right now, since they require a lot of experience to work with and more support from different equipment to get working properly (doesn't end up being as cheap as you think). The Panasonic G7 is another popular choice, but it doesn't have stabilization. You'll likely want that to get smooth handheld shots.

What an arse. I tend to find lorries are more likely to scoot over and let me filter through, I figure it's better for them to know I'm past them.

I use the ConourROAM2 which is pretty good, got a 32gb memory card to go with it. I got it for £100 which seems to be bargain because the cheapest I can find now is about £170.

u/SamanthaMarie0330 · 2 pointsr/gopro

on amazon, it lasted all last summer and I intend on using it this summer as well. Granted I'm not a super heavy gopro user, it served its purpose and I haven't had any problems yet.

One of my favorite activities...planning dream vacations!

Ok, first, I'm going to Puerto Rico...beautiful weather, good food, and lots of history. You can't not find something to do.

I'll stay in Old San Juan for a few days to roam around the beautiful buildings, soak up the culture, and visit museums.

Then, I'll head west to El Yunque, the rainforest, and spend a day or two hiking around, photographing wildlife and flora. It'll help to have this bad boy with me.

After I'm done hiking in the rainforest, I'll head over to Isla Vieques for a final night in Puerto Rico. On Vieques, I'll make sure to view the bioluminescent bays... and maybe even try my hand at more photography with one of these.

And of course, the company. I'll go with my best friend, because nothing is quite like spending time travelling with friends. Plus, she's pretty much the most awesome person ever, with a sarcastic sense of humor, lots of energy, and always looking to travel. And she's also into the photography, so she'll be down with me stopping to take photos all the time!

Doesn't get much better than that!

u/frodomann108 · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Most expensive item, a GoPro camera.

I would love to have this to catch all the great moments when I wish I had a good video camera that isn't a phone. Like when I ran a 5k mud run.

If I never got it, I guess I would be okay with that. I would probably miss out on some neat things though, especially if I have kids soon.

I just bought a ContourHD from amazon for 100 dollars:

http://www.amazon.com/Contour-1300-ContourHD-Helmet-Camera/dp/B002QGSYZ4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320071978&sr=8-1

They are selling really cheap right now because the company just released a bunch of new ones with features I don't care about (submersible, GPS tracking, etc).

But this one has 1080P HD at 30fps and 720P at 60FPS, along with a removable battery. The new versions have an integrated battery, so the entire unit needs to be charged.

u/Draeth · 2 pointsr/photography

Bought one for my trip to Crete. I did everything they suggest to leak testing and proper loading and sealing. Although I did an extra step of letting it sit in the bathtub overnight empty to guarantee that it was watertight. I took it snorkeling, when I finished it was bone dry inside. I bought the larger one for DSLRs and I would recommend it. It is a much cheaper alternative to the next in line for waterproof housings.

It was this one. http://www.amazon.com/DiCAPac-WPS10-Waterproof-Cameras-190mm/dp/B00169HXW2/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1314271019&sr=1-3

I got this for my 5 year old a couple weeks ago after doing a bit of research. There already aren't a ton of tough cameras and there are even fewer good ones. I think I narrowed it down to ~2-3 and the [Olympus TG-4] (http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-Waterproof-Digital-Camera-3-Inch/dp/B00UKV5E4Q) took the top spot.

The time from button press to picture taken was one of the other key things I was looking at and reviews said this camera focused fast. Scrolling through his photos, a lot of them are actually in focus so I think it is doing its job nicely. [This] (http://imgur.com/oPVuHPD) is an example image he took at a playground. Nothing special about it at all, except maybe it doesn't look like it was taken by a 4.5 year old.

I third the sandmarc pole. I picked it up about month ago and love it. i can't compare it to others, but it's much better than the stick I was using that I picked up in hawaii a year ago, haha. Makes it easy to shoot away from me/the pole and then flip it to shoot selfies. I had it fully extended, out my trucks window going 70mph over the weekend, no issues. The twist locks seem nice as well. No complaints at all. Here is a referral link to save 10% if you buy it from them. It's also on amazon with free shipping if you have prime. Not sure if the link will work, but here it is out the window: https://38.media.tumblr.com/82fc1d14de6205e6b6a18763fe2a2861/tumblr_n9tgt8HFk51qeigmjo2_1280.jpg

Buy the original DJI Phantom (that doesn't include a camera), and buy a GoPro Hero 3: White Edition. This will run you only ~$680, and gets you full 1080p HD video. If you need the FPV (live video streaming from the Phantom 2 Vision+), then you'll have to spend more than $700. In my opinion, the FPV is not a necessity for the $200+ reduction in price.

Edit: the Banggood link says the Phantom is currently $889 now. I would get it. Like now.

I would t trust this to underwater, but sand, snow, splash protection this should be pretty good. These are also good for photographing those color chalked runs and holi celebrations.

I'm sorry for not posting a price, I updated the post. I'm in college so it might be a little hard for me to swing for a Go-Pro. u/Octogenarian · 2 pointsr/gopro

I was playing in some rough surf with my Hero6 and it got tons of sand in all of the seams. They were hard to clean out. Later my battery compartment took on water and ruined the camera. I think if it never got sand in it, it never would have leaked.

My advice, get a knock off case that can fit the lens cover and protect it just enough. At that depth, you really shouldn't need a dive casing.

u/Urban_Thief · 2 pointsr/gopro

Do some research on light penetration. As you get deeper, you will lose more and more colors. To get accurate colors you will need to bring your own light source.

IMO, lights are glass are the most important purchases. In 5 or so years you will be shopping for a new camera, but (hopefully) your lights and lenses are still working well for you. Imagine yourself as a very successful underwater photographer. You can buy just about anything you want. Think about what kind of pictures you are taking. Now, what type of gear do you need to take those pictures? Do you need a lot of different lenses? How elaborate is your lighting and arms?

Now take a step back. what could you buy (within reason) that would meet your needs then as well as now? What things are simply too expensive to justify buying at your skill and interest level?

I did this and I imagined me with a top notch SLR, lots of fancy lenses, and some really good lights. After shopping around I found some strobes that were not (too) expensive and I would still be comfortable using them if I bought a UW case for my SLR. I also found a good focus light that works well for me and I could use in the future. The camera I bought was a entry level Olympus for around $500 for the camera and case.

For you, this plus a base plus a focus light would be a good start. Not sure where you dive, but researching wet diopter lenses to put on the front of the UW would be helpful for macro. Once you are comfortable with that, add a strobe. It will take a while to get good with your new setup. Next you can decide if you want a 2nd flash. As for flashes, I would recommend a Sea & Sea YS-D2 or something similar, but that would depend on your long term goals. As far as arms go, I only know what I own and I have not heard anything bad about any of the brands out there. I would recommend something that you can buy locally.

Hopefully this helps.

u/sinamotamedi · 2 pointsr/aww

> how well this performs underwater?

You'll need a [relatively inexpensive waterproof bag] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dicapac-WP-S10-outdoor-underwater-SLRs/dp/B00169HXW2//ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=hybrcamerevo-21) or a [very expensive waterproof case] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Camera-Photo/Ikelite-Underwater-Housing-Panasonic-G7-6961-07/B01EJAP5JC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1492341724&sr=1-3-fkmr0&keywords=Panasonic+G7+underwater+case&linkCode=ll1&tag=hybrcamerevo-21).

> I'm guessing you have some experience with this model by how much you have said so how do you think it holds up compared to more expensive budgets?

Not this model, but I have been shooting with Panasonic GH cameras for over 6 years, starting with the GH2. Shooters are still making great movies with that camera ([this underwater documentary] (https://vimeo.com/200559856) was shot a few months ago with the GH2). My GH2 still works as well as the day I opened the box.

> I'm thinking in terms of how long it's life would be before upgrading again and if it would be worthwhile to spend more for the first time?

That's up to you, but sometimes "perfect" is the enemy of "good enough".

Again, hope this is helpful!

If they were real, why would they be sold so cheaply?

Of course nobody will sell you a $399 electronic device for $100.

Amazon has it at $325:

Whatever you are getting for $100 is NOT a GoPro Hero 7 Black.

Thanks.

Yes, I'm using a GoPro Hero 7 Black on a FeiyuTech Feiyu WG2X gimbal. I mount the gimbal on my helmet.

The GoPro itself already has really good stabilization and when you combine that with the gimbal, you can get really good results.

There's a guy on YouTube named Terry Barentsen that I'm subscribed to. He does cycling videos in a similar style, and he kind of inspired me to start making my own videos. You should check him out, he's got a lot of great content. Here's one of my favorites of his: Link

I looked over a lot of different cameras and reviews when searching for mine. I ended up buying probably the cheapest which is an AKASO.
Xiaoyi is also a good option.
The advantage over a phone camera is that you can just set them down and capture the entire room. The only downside is that the battery lasts for about 1.5 hours which is probably just right for taking BJJ vids.

Hey! We will have a solar charging station for camera batteries, camera protection and cleaning supplies and a place (out of the dust) where people can change lenses.

So here's a list of DON'T DOs:

  1. Change lens on playa unless you are in a dust-free zone.
(Change indoors, with fresh latex/serving gloves)

  2. Shoot without a protective sleeve.

  3. Walk around without spare batteries.

That said, here's the one I am personally using:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00169HXW2/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8

Shooting with a smart phone isn't that bad either, as a second-perspective lens, if you feel you chose the "wrong lens".

    Cheers!

I'm not sure which one Swaggles is talking about, but the Akaso EK7000 is incredible for $80. It can do 4K/25, 2.7K/30, and 1080P/60. It also has wifi for live view and supports the same mounts as a GoPro. I love mine.

Edit: it's also a bit lighter weight than a GoPro so hopefully your flight times would increased.

There are a lot of Action Cameras on Amazon under $100. I have never tried one out myself, but you may be able to search the reviews or see if anyone has tried them out. Something such as this

u/NastyBTC · 1 pointr/drones

I'm looking at purchasing the same, do you have/know someone with a postage/drug scale and weigh the camera? My hope is I can replace the syma cam with [this cheap "4K" cam. ](AKASO EK7000 4K WIFI Sports Action Camera Ultra HD Waterproof DV Camcorder 12MP 170 Degree Wide Angle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HGM33HG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_JxQBybSXHKCES)

Has anyone tried/thought if this modification?

Edit: BTW, I received a syma for Christmas that looks exactly like X8g (was Red) but the action cam could link up to my phone for fpv (camera looked the same as other x8g's) the problem was the nuts/caps that secure rotors had no threads, only "pressed" onto rotor shaft loose enough that one would fly off as soon as motors fired up - causing the blade to do the same. I returned the drone to Costco and continued to search the web for a replacement until I decided to get the x8g on Amazon (basically the same minus fpv feature). Oddly, I was unable to find the Costco model ANYWHERE online.

So 2 questions:
1.) does your x8g have any similar issues? How are the "caps" on yours?
2.) does anyone know if Costco sells defective merchandise sometimes, almost like a Nike outlet?

Disclaimer: This is an accessories question so if you're tired of them, I'm sorry and feel free to keep scrolling.

Intended use: My intended use for it is basic vacation video. 99% of what I will do is walking around and eating in restaurants with friends/family.

Condition: I bought the gopro because of its size. I love traveling light, I have a children's size backpack for that reason, and would love to limit the amount of accessories to lug around. I am doing a few international flights and my luggage space is very limited.

Considerations: I'm thinking about just getting a pole like this. However I do think I would benefit from having some sort of tripod though I'm not sure as I'm new to making videos in general. I considered the 3-way but just don't really want to shell out the $70. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Batteries, batteries, and more batteries if you were to get one.

Second to that is a pole preferably with a remote mount.

Thirdly get the remote to take access your gropro without using your phone.

If you take a hit to the lens, no. That'll hurt...

Buy a waterproof housing for the A6000. There is a nice $200 on Amazon.

No problem. I use this for my GoPro. The end screws off for a standard 1/4" thread.

u/baaldlam · 1 pointr/gopro

Thanks for the reply buddy!

I was thinking about strapping the camera to my head instead of holding it during the dive. Would you advise against that or is it a fair alternative to getting a rig?

Batteries and SD cards are a must for sure, I might go for the GoPro plus, sounds reasonable.

As for the supersuit, this seems to be the exact one GoPro sells.. is it original? Or should I just not take any chances and order from the website? This trip is already costing me a buttload and I intend to simply buy a GoPro off Kijiji (canadian craigslist) and re sell it once the trip is over.

So far I really like it. I wanted something small enough to fit in a backpack to take snowboarding or traveling. It fits the bill perfect. Customer service was excellent as well. You could use your phones inside the car and shoot in 4K.

For external, you could get some cheap GoPro knock offs for outside (something like this):

I went ahead of purchased this GoPro pole for my cam.
Now the rules say the following:
"Regarding action cameras – yes to strap headwear or non-extendable handles"
This handle that I have does extend, however it has a locking mechanism where you have to twist it in order for it to extend. Do you guys think security will let it slide if I tell them it's not extendable? Was thinking of giving it to my GF maybe they'd let her slide rather some guy. I know it all depends on the person just want feed back. Worst case I'll leave it at the gate if I have to!

I have a Contour Roam 2 and it is suitable for what you want: AMAZON. It's not the latest model, but it's only $100.

u/clickbaitcomment · 1 pointr/homesecurity

How lit is it around your car? You could get something like This
and put it on dashcam mode, as long as you have a car lighter socket that's got power it will record for 10 minutes, start a new recording and record another 10 minutes. Once the card is full it just goes and records over the oldest file. I have a 32gb card that holds around 12 hours of footage.

u/daewootech · 1 pointr/gopro

I'd get one of the third party ones, the kind where you don't have to remove the lens, that way you have the cases protection and the default lens protection

Something like this where it's cheap enough to be disposable - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0749DBX11/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_I16-BbKVQRWPJ

For 4 or 5 hours of battery life, you will definitely have to use an external usb battery pack and usb charge cable plugging into the camera the whole time. You’ll have to get a big micro sd card as well to capture all that footage even if it is at 720p.

A knock off gopro like the akaso brave 4 camera might be a good option because it is water proof. But you will have to buy a case that lets you plug in that external usb power supply, which will be default make it not water proof after all.

AKASO Brave 4 4K 20MP WiFi Action Camera Ultra HD with EIS 30m Underwater Waterproof Camera Remote Control 5X Zoom Underwater Camcorder with 2 Batteries and Helmet Accessories Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076DD5JNS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_TkC6Bb9CA3MHZ

With knock off gopro accessories and mounts you could probably get a back pack mount or something too so it could just be on your shoulder as you commute.

Every side-by-side I found it appears to be more of a HDR type effect with the EK7000. Could be some rendering done before the upload though but if you youtube the camera, you will see most, if not all videos have those bright colors to it. Looking at the videos, I would definitely say it is nicer than the gopro comparison but again, I don't own either so I am not sure if there's some touch ups before the uploads.

With the price of the EK7000, if the reviews are good you can't go wrong for entry level.

Edit: It's 4.5 stars with 4,220 reviews. BUY IT!

I packed around it with smaller clothing for safety while in the air, and for most of the trip I had my DSLR out, I used one of THESE around my camera while it was out.

I have a Nikon D7000 for a camera, and I use THIS as my travel lens with a UV filter, but no hood for this trip because it was in the waterproof case.

u/definitelylegitlol · 1 pointr/solotravel

Hmm, that's interesting that there is such a high markup since it's Canada.

You might consider this one, shoots 4k which gives you a lot more to work with when editing (cropping etc), comes with a case, shoots 1080p 60 FPS. There's a ton more reviews on the US Amazon.

Both work with GoPro accessories, so you could get an accessories kit for CAD $15.

u/ciabattabing16 · 1 pointr/motorcycles

I have one of these

I think I got a mid-range model for like $150-$200.

IMO, you don't really need the phone/app connectivity, and the streaming. It's nice, but a majority of the time you're looking at video, it's on a computer, to edit it or watch it. So cutting away all that extra tech, form-factor is the next most important thing. I still cannot understand how folks can do things with those boxy Go-pros on their heads, guys show up to hockey with them periodically. Mounting it on a bike, that makes more sense to me. But for helmets, I like these slim tube-shaped cameras. They're out of the way, don't catch the wind and drag on my helmet/head, and get the job done.

Suggestion: get two cameras, of different styles/types to try em both out. A buddy of mine strapped his GoPro to his ass end on his bike in a group ride, and I've seen guys strap smaller ones to the pegs. Kind of like the idea of a helmet cam as well as a mounted cam, getting two angles from the same shoot. Amazon makes re-sale pretty easy and with minimal loss, I've found.

Sorry about the 6D! Hopefully the button that doesn't work isn't too important. I lost my directional buttons for down, up, or right. Only the "left" button works.

Luckily, nearly all the menus can be navigated by dials. Still a pain in the butt when trying to review images.

I was snorkeling with mine in essentially a heavy-duty ziploc bag. I had used it before on several occasions without any problems, but this day, I looked in the bag while snorkeling and saw maybe a half-inch of saltwater on the bottom of the bag. Immediately surfaced, turned everything off, let it dry. At first it wouldn't turn back on, but eventually it came alive... just without those buttons.

All in all, I'd consider that pretty lucky. I'd say there's a 75% chance that I didn't properly seal the bag, and a 25% chance it failed.

I'm with you, I'd much prefer a more weather sealed camera. I love taking hikes and landscape shots, so occasional showers are expected. But for 10fps, amazing dynamic range, dual card slots, EVF with good battery life, amazing video quality, in-body image stabilization, and working up/down/right buttons, I'd probably accept throwing a rain cover in my bag.

Thanks /u/lamic

I looked through your post and recommendations, it looks awesome! I know I really should wait for the Hero5 but I'm not sure if I can wait.

I started to put a list of things I want/need into a spreadsheet, to start looking at Price. I have Amazon Prime so I'm thinking about ordering everything through Amazon.

Can you take a quick look through my list and see if everything checks out and if I missed anything for "Basic" operations? Then could you make any more recommendations, or let me know what my next purchases should be?

  • GoPro HERO4 SILVER- $338

  • Memory Card Lexar 64GB- $35, Looks like the cheapest one between Sandisk Extreme and Lexar, Lexar currently is the cheapest on Amazon

  • Batteries - Wasabi Power Battery (2-Pack)- $22, Read a few reviews and people said they like these batteries a lot. Should give me enough juice and let me know how long I can record with, until I'm completely dead.

  • Protection Lens - $7 I really just need to lens protector, in the reviews people are saying some parts don’t fit the Hero4 only the Hero3. Or should I put the $20 version off the actual GoPro site?

  • GoPro The Tool$4, Like you requested and reading some comments it looks like it would be worth it.

  • A basic Card Reader - $7, did a quick google search on best card readers this one popped up for best for it’s price.

  • SANDMARC® Pole - $40, Looked up some reviews and people tend to like this one. It seems like is always recommended to have some kind of stick or holdable mount to start off with. Also could you go into a little more detail about mounting the GoPro?

  • Pelican Case -$25 I like the idea of it being waterproof and I like to be organized with my stuff. So this looks like a perfect fit. And it will be an awesome case to travel with.

  • Kingston 5-in-1 Mobile Companion - $35 I was watching some videos and it seems like this could be a cool little gadget to have. I would mostly use it for “mobile uploads to Hard Drives”. Working in IT I know how important it is to have backups, and this will let me get around bringing a laptop to the resort and other stuff. This is the video I’m referring too that shows you how to upload to a HD with out a computer.

So with everything in my cart I’m sitting at $488 which is with in my budget.

I’m still reading about the remote. That might be something we add down the line. I think I’ll be pretty content with just my phone app or getting the “waterproof touch screen” case cover too.

Do you think this is a good setup? Will this get me going? Do you have any recommendations, or anything that I should add or not buy yet?

This go-pro is by far the most important thing on my wishlist. I don't expect anyone on here to get it for me, but next time I get a lump sum of money that doesn't have to go anywhere more important, this will be purchased. I ride a motorcycle and for insurance purposes, catching my experiences on camera is vital. There are a lot of experiences (like my boyfriend's motorcycle accident where he got ran over) that having this item would've been a life saver and helped establish justice. Also, I love recording my life and experiences so I can look back at them.

My first gun was a Ruger!

I bought the rectangular SJCAM SJ4000 in Nov and have been using it as a dashcam and action cam on my bikes with no problems. Yes it is a direct GoPro knock off but the fact that others are knocking it off shows its merits. From an earlier post:

> A GoPro 3 camera and k-edge Go Big mount will set one back $300... (and look great)

> I just needed a cheap dashcam so after some research I replicated this setup for $100. I use the SJcam 4000 mounted low, front and centre with a dx.com handlebar mount. [both setups produce 1080p 30fps video max]

Is it better to just buy the camera at $350 and then buy the individual accessories I need with the current $350 price? It looks like all the bundles are priced based on the $399 pricing, which means none of them are a good deal as long as the base unit is selling for 350.

Harvey did a nice number on the lakes around here and I'm skeptical to get the boat out. Still lots of crap (people's docks and trees and what-not) that are just submerged below the water since it's so bloody high.

I am going to see Niagara Falls next month, so I also wanted to waterproof my camera. This is what I came up with. It just came yesterday, so I haven't had a chance to do anything besides open the box. The reviews are ok.

There are also really expensive housings that fit over the camera. They probably work the best, but I don't have the cash for that!
