Yep, I found a 256GB thumb drive for $55 and now I’m Sentry’ing all the time (except in my garage).

I have a little pouch that holds a bunch of flash drives, 1TB ext. HDD and a 512GB ext. SSD. For the flash drives I have a retail Win10 USB that has the original build on it, 8GB, 16GB, a 128GB 3.1 gen2 USB SSD and 2x 32GB 3.0 drives.

The 8GB has the most up to date Win10 install for both x64 and x32, but also is used when another iso is needed to be burned and used, more on this later.

The 16GB holds very commonly installed programs that grab the latest version during install anyway. Ninite for all the runtimes like java, flash, shockwave, acrobat etc. Chrome, Firefox, iTunes, VLC, and other common goodies. I also use chocolatey in some specific cases.

Both 32GB have Windows PE with many tools that do everything from virus removal and windows repair to disk cloning, partition management, password stripping, etc. Check out Hiren's Boot CD revived into a bootable PE, this has all the tools I use and more, I will be switching to this soon. Inside the flash is a folder with my custom scripts and other tools that are meant to be ran inside the OS. This allows for the drive to either be booted from, or plugged into a PC and used as a normal flash drive for holding my own custom tools, more on those later.

Finally, the 128GB is a SanDisk Pro Extreme (Amazon): it has Arch Linux installed with persistence, not to be confused with live booting. I chose this flash drive because it is super fast and is actually like an SSD and not a flash drive, because it has an intelligent memory controller unlike regular USB drives making it usable as an actual system drive.

The 1TB ext. HDD is used for large client backups. Once the backup is complete, depending on what the client wants, the drive is either formatted (also zeroed out securely if client requests) on-site after data has been verified and transferred the way they want, or brought back to my office and put on a machine that has a compartmentalized file structure running on a RAID6. This system is completely airgapped.

Lastly, the 512GB WD Passport which is relatively new to my collection. It is an external rugged SSD using the Type-C interface. It has a compressed *.iso image of the Windows PE drives I use, a duplicate copy of all the installers mentioned before, and a folder full of retail isos. I have the original (legitimate) installer .iso for Win7 Home, Pro, and Ultimate, Win8.1, and Win10. Also all the MS Office installers dating back to 2007. This drive is only brought out if I need it and serves as a backup in case one of my drives gets corrupt and needs to be re-flashed or if a client has the product key for an old version of office and is really adamant about not upgrading to 365. Also if I need to reinstall Win7, Win8.1 or boot off of some weird linux distro I take the iso from here and burn it to the 8GB drive mentioned earlier.

As for my custom scripts, I have created a TON over the years. I would be happy to start up a github and put them up there with some documentation if people would be interested! Some that I can name off the top of my head are:

-A robocopy batch file that automatically copies the entire Users, Program Files, and Program data on the specified drive. This script is meant to be run from the target drive, such as the 1TB I mentioned earlier. With this script I can plug in the drive, double click the batch file and let it do its thing. This will automatically copy all the important user and program data to the drive from which it was ran, in this case the 1TB

-A script that pulls the computers info and spits it out to a text file named via variables "User-SerialNumber"

-A script that generates a list of all installed programs via a WMIC command. Useful before a Restore/Refresh

-A script that changes power settings to high performance and disables Windows Telemetry.

-A script for repairing OS corruption. DISM, SFC, then CHKDSK, Netsock, netsh, ipconfig /release|/renew|/flushdns etc.

-A script that asks for the workstation's name, then generates a text file containing the computer info and emails it to me so I can later inventory it for that specific client in order to keep track of the device which is associated with a particular help desk ticket or issue.

There are plenty others, but I just woke up and haven't had coffee yet lol. Let me know if anyone is interested, maybe I can throw together a github for it. Would be a fun little side project.

edit:

I have gotten a few scripts documented and uploaded, have a look!

Amazon is also selling it for $26.50 new or 23.32 used through Amazon Warehouse: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BPK3XWW/

I bought the last generation of this drive and have been completely impressed with it. It does get a little hot though if you're writing to it a lot. I needed a bigger drive though and noticed that it was on sale, so enjoy!

Looking for people to stand by the road to hold closing signs.

The Shopko in my town closed about a week ago and it was a wild ride of a shit-show. They hired a company to assist them in the closure, and the first thing that they did was jack up all of the prices. On much of the merchandise, you could see the original price under the cheap-ass tags that they used. For instance, they had all computer memory (CD's, flash drives, etc.) 50% off, but the 128gb SanDisk flash drive they had had a pre-sale price of $79.99. Post-sale, I would pay $40, but I can get the same drive on Amazon for half that.

u/BazTehBarrett · 16 pointsr/AskReddit

There are USB devices in the form of a dog that when plugged in, will just start humping on its mount. Don't know what it costs or where to get it, i saw my friend had one of them some time ago and thought to myself: That is pretty useless but funny nonetheless.

EDIT: Looks like this. Just google useless USB devices.

Amazon link. 20$.

u/vonsmor · 16 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Yep, I have had one on my keychain for four years, and it still looks in pretty good shape, and works perfectly. Here it is

The only reason I would upgrade at this point would be to get the newer model which is USB 3.0 (10x faster read/write). But for oddball installers/tools/and work related files it comes in really handy.

Please be careful of temperature tolerances. I bring this up every time someone posts a drive suggestion thread so I'll paste in my usual response:

Be careful with the temperature tolerances of the drives you use if you live in a market with seasons. I looked at the T5 but nyxed it when I saw it's only rated for 5-35 degrees C (41-95F). In Chicago we regularly get well above and below those temps in a car. Cabin overheat won't even kick in yet at 95.
I switched to the Samsung Fit Plus 256gb when I went through 2 other drives last year (polar vortex and one of the drives being a T5) and hazarded a guess that it was too cold and killing the drives. -25°C to 85°C operating limits on this drive (-13 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit). No issues since. Drive capacity is less but now with the self erasing in v10 I don't have to pop it out and erase once a month. Muuuuuch better temp tolerances and physically much smaller drive is nice as it isn't hanging from a cable in the front compartment.

These are tiny USB ASIC miners called Block Erupters, circa 2013-14.

https://www.amazon.com/ASICMiner-Block-Erupter-USB-Sapphire/dp/B00CUJT7TO

There was a time, maybe half a year, when it was profitable to mine with the 330 megahashes per second that these things could add to your laptop. For comparison, a top-of-the-line Graphics card at the time did about 500 Mh/S, but sucked a ton more electricity out of your wall, and caused a lot more heat, too.

By 2015 these were useless, producing just a few satoshi per day of running the laptop, and are now nice collectors items. I can't even fathom how many days it would take now to mine a satoshi with one.

u/AwwLurker · 10 pointsr/buildapcsales

Or if you want the 128GB version, it's $28

u/definitelynotaspy · 9 pointsr/DIY

And it has moving parts... which is kinda the whole thing we're trying to get away from. I guess you could just take the cap off, but why create waste?

These are a good alternative if the Patriot ones are too spendy.

Found it strange how some people are saying USB-C drives are "expensive". Yes, please tell me more about how a 128gig drive which costs less than forty bucks is "almost as expensive as a CFast card"!

The ASICMiner Block Erupters. They're actually pretty cheap right now. But you probably will never see any return on them because the mining difficulty is so incredibly high right now.

It sounds like you're confused about a couple things and it doesn't sound like you're ready to build a PC. If you buy a PC, whether you buy it off the shelf at a computer store or have one shipped to you, it will come with Windows preinstalled and the Windows license will be part of the overall cost.

Windows 10 1903 is only 3.7GB. At 4.8GB, 1809 was too big for DVD-R/DVD+R discs. 1803 and 1903 are both small enough to burn to DVD. No, you do not need to buy a USB drive. However, Windows will install faster from a USB 3.x flash drive than a DVD-ROM. I recommend either the 32GB Samsung BAR for $10 or the 128GB model for $25. You don't even need 32GB, but the 128GB model is 50% faster. That might be important to you. I have the 32GB model, of the old style (they changed the appearance slightly) and Windows installation is like 20 minutes, and that's to a slow laptop hard drive.

But you're asking about paying, and I suspect you're not talking about USB hardware, but your Windows license. You can install the Windows ISO via direct download or an ISO burned to DVD or extracted to USB, and everything will go fine, but without a license, you won't be able to change the wallpaper (background will be black) and it will constantly notify/nag you about it. So that puts you in license violation, but your computer will still run and Microsoft won't bill you. (A nonzero number of people just deal with that.) To be compliant with Microsoft licensing, you can click the notification and it will help you buy a Windows license. You can do it right through the Windows Store, which would be the easiest way. (You can also use the Windows Store to buy your way from Home to Pro.) You can buy a physical copy at Best Buy or a similar store and input the code where instructed.

Happy to help with any other questions. I'll be here for the next hour or so.

u/zakabog · 7 pointsr/pcmasterrace

That'll cost you $50 for USB or $30 for a SATA SSD.

I have dozens of drives I've collected over the years, but with storage being so cheap it's easier to transfer your data to a new device rather than rely on a drive so near the end of it's life. Keep the old drive in a bin if you want to keep it for the lulz, but I wouldn't actually use it in my build.

u/VagabondVivant · 7 pointsr/onebag

RAVPower FileHub

I used to love my WD Passport, until it died. Realized I was better off with something that let me use whatever storage media I wanted. Best of all, this thing lets me one-button back up the SD card to attached USB storage. With a low-profile 256gb thumb drive (eg) permanently slotted into the USB port, the whole thing becomes a shockproof (kinda) waterproof one-touch backup system.

It looks like you can get the Connect Wireless Stick on Amazon for about $20.

The price of the Pi $10, the cable, $2.50, and the SD card, $9, comes close enough not to make much difference.

I think you're right that the archiving wouldn't be automatic, though. Maybe someone can think of a way to automate the process using this device, though. That'd be neat!

Switching from Google to Microsoft is like going from diarrhea to vomit. If your privacy is worth half a shit to you just get a USB stick for your keychain, these dual USB-A and USB-C ones are nifty. If you have to get cloud storage iCloud probably is the most trustworthy one.

u/Blackroush · 6 pointsr/teslamotors

Hello.

Item 1 also depends on if you have FSD or not. FSD buyers seem to get a priority.

Item 2 I have had a Samsung USB drive w 300mb write speeds, for 6 months and have zero issues with it. Can get it here.

Mozilla sometimes needs to be restarted for the extension to work (Chrome and Safari don't have this issue). So I'd say first try restarting. Once you've done that, visit an amazon page like this one. Here's a Target page to try.

Also keep in mind you don't need an extension to use the website. You can use the search box on the top of the site to search by keyword or url. Just paste an amazon url in it and you'll get a page like this.

If PZ knows about that item, you'll see a "PZ" icon in the right side of the URL bar (will look like this). Click it to see the price history. It will also show sales rank history (if available) and let you add it to your watchlist.

Would it be possible to use a wifi flash drive to automatically grab replays saved to an emulated memory card on the usb or sd card?

The thing that most excites me about 20xxte at majors is juicy juicy 1080p frame by frame replays of the pros that you can turn hitboxes on for and everything, but it's a pretty big pain in the butt to actually take all the sd cards out and transfer everything over to a computer. If you could do it all wirelessly, I could see it being much easier to convince people to do.

Has anyone tried this method yet? Does it work?

I'd get a sandisk flash drive. Something like this 16gb flash drive

u/internetosaurus · 4 pointsr/chromeos

Crouton works with external drives, although I'd recommend a low-profile USB 3 flash drive (eg, Samsung, Sandisk) over an SD card. I found Crouton from an SD card to be painfully slow any time something had to do much I/O like program updates.

I haven't tried an XBox 360 controller, but my DS4 works plugged in without any extra software. I would guess that it will work fine.

The i3, in addition to being a faster CPU, has twice the EUs in its iGPU compared to the Celeron and they're clocked ~15% higher. Probably won't make a difference it what you're playing, but if you want to try running more graphically-demanding games it would be useful.

You don't even need an SSD. Just get a 250gb USB flash drive. It's what I use and my games load in 5-10 seconds. I keep all my current games on the flash drive and my other games on an external 7200rpm drive. I just move back and forth if I need to. If you really pay attention you can get a 256gb flash drive for $40-70. I have a PNY drive.

Edit: This is the exact drive I currently am using and know it works perfectly when setup as a storage device and not a media device.

This one is rated at 150MB/s read and about 60MB/s write. If you want something faster, the Sandisk Extreme USB is also on flash sale for $16.75. The Extreme is rated for 245MB/s read and about 100MB/s write. I have the Extreme (and in fact just ordered another one with this sale) and it is noticeably faster than any of my other USB3 flash drives. The rated read and write speeds are legit, and it works great especially when I'm copying large virtual image files. Can't speak for the OP but it does seem like a good drive for this price is your needs aren't as... extreme.

u/camwow13 · 3 pointsr/DataHoarder

I've had a Samsung BAR 128 on my keychain for three years. Works great. Write speeds can be a little erratic but usually 30-60 mb/s. Much faster than any other inexpensive flash drives I've owned.

They've since updated it with the Bar Plus with USB 3.1. It looks like the write speeds are down to less than 40 now from people who've tested it. Reads are still crazy fast.

At 22 bucks for 128 and all metal waterproof shockproof design it's a decent option. There's probably stuff with better write speeds, but you're going to have to get that M.2 enclosure setup for anything really really good.

u/nlofe · 3 pointsr/WeAreTheMusicMakers

A 64GB flash drive should be plenty as far as storage goes, but please please please keep backups elsewhere, such as some cloud service or even another flash drive. If your flash drive dies there's little that can be done to recover the data and you will feel absolutely shitty.

When you have a little extra money to spend, I highly recommend getting something like this. It uses RAID and keeps a copy of the same data on two separate hard drives. That is to say, if one dies, the data is still safe on the second drive. You can then replace the dead drive, and it automatically copies the data over from the good drive to the new one.

But to answer your question: In the meantime, yes, a flash drive is fine, but make frequent backups to something like Google Drive. I'd recommend something like this that's waterproof and has a wide safe temperature range (in case it's left in a car or something).

Good luck!

I think the quality of your experience will depend on the quality of the app that the manufacturer provides to access the files. As others have said, I’ve never heard of this brand before so I’d want to check out their app reviews.

I went with a Sandisk model that has the same dual lightning to USB dual connectors. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01CIEBXZG/ref=psdcmw_3151491_t1_B01MPXCGW3

Their app is really good and stable, and I’m able to quickly move files from the drive onto my phone (and even quickly watch the videos on my phone to identify the right file to move) before I leave the car, so I can always leave the drive in the car. Has worked really great for me so far.

u/DurianNinja · 3 pointsr/oneplus
u/Terriblytorrid · 3 pointsr/USBC

Hey u/google_drive_fan11,

This Sandisk seems to have some okay reviews, and those bad ones were contacted by Sandisk support. But I agree with you, the lack of true high quality USB-C 3.1 gen 2 drives is a shame, hopefully if people like you and me buy more USB-C flash drives, the manufacturers will respond to the demand.

That said, If you do get a USB-C drive I'm sure the community here would appreciate a review or any comparisons you can make.

u/fmillion · 3 pointsr/DataHoarder

The best price-to-GB ratio will be found in USB "SSDs", e.g. the Samsung T5's. It's basically the same type of chips you'd find in a standard SSD paired with a USB controller. On USB 3.0 you can usually achieve around 350-400MB/sec sustained performance provided the flash controller and the chips can handle it. The USB overhead may be a slight bottleneck but you should see comparable performance to a mid-range SATA SSD.

Or you can build your own by picking up an mSATA SSD along with a USB3 pocket-sized enclosure. Example: https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Enclosure-Adapter-Support-EC-UKMS/dp/B00LRZPNHM and https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-EVO-Internal-MZ-M5E500BW/dp/B00TGIVVKU/ - a 500GB for less than $200. In fact, some of the "USB SSD" solutions on the market are simply branded versions of this.

If you're really hoping for the stick formfactor typical of USB flash drives, I've had good luck with SanDisk Extreme Pro drives. Example: https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SDCZ880-128G-G46-Extreme-128GB-Solid/dp/B01MU8TZRV/ These come close to the performance of an mSATA solution but as others have said they can have smaller caches which can make things like running an OS more erratic.

u/sidusnare · 3 pointsr/linuxquestions

I just use stock Ubuntu LTS on a SanDisk Extreme PRO 128GB USB 3.1, benchmarks have it with top marks for writing throughput. I keep that in my laptop bag, but I also have a Kingston Digital 128GB Data Traveler SE9 G2 USB 3.0 that I have on my keychain with the same thing on it. The Kingston has a hole for a keyring, and metal case, it's more durable and smaller, but the write performance isn't the best, so using it is slower, but it's good to have in a pinch.

u/radraze2kx · 3 pointsr/Beatmatch

as a professional computer repair company owner, and a DJ, you should have had a backup. no USB drive is infallible, especially against corruption.

now, if your drive isn't being recognized by windows, I'd recommend downloading a Linux Live ISO and trying to read it there. If it works, copy the data to a different flash drive.

If the drive was physically bent, you may have damaged the thin silicon and broken the traces that lead to the controller or flash chip, in which case you'd need to bring it to a data recovery specialist.

In the future, make Playlists in RekordBox and drag the Playlist to the drive. If you lose the drive, you can recreate it on a new drive by moving the Playlists again.

Also, use Samsung bar metal drives, such as this one: Samsung BAR Plus 128GB - 300MB/s USB 3.1 Flash Drive Champagne Silver (MUF-128BE3/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BPK3XWW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_4CHSCbFKS63B0

You can't bend it with typical forces such as leaning on it or accidentally running into it while walking by the side of your laptop.

Hopefully these tips cure you of your ailments.

I'm guessing you don't have to have a totally clear drive. I've always used an empty drive, but I have tried it with multiple BIOS versions on the drive at once, and I was able to select in the BIOS which file to flash. As long as the BIOS file is in the root directory of the drive I believe it should be detected.

That's assuming the USB drive is FAT32 formatted. If it's something like NTFS or exFAT then I doubt it would work.

Edit: You could also get a cheap USB drive just for stuff like this; 16GB for $3.99 at Amazon.

I don't think ASIC cards can be inserted directly into a PC, I think they require specialized hardware. Are you thinking of something like this?

https://www.amazon.com/ASICMiner-Block-Erupter-USB-Sapphire/dp/B00CUJT7TO

You probably won't get much return on these unless Bitcoin goes up by a lot, here's a price comparison of the different hardware you might use if you're going to be mining with USB devices. If that's your goal, it would be a different build for your PC. You'd want to have as many USB slots as possible, or to get powered USB splitters.

Kingston DTSE9 - Small little metal 16GB USB drive that's meant to go on your keys. I've had mine for 3 years and I love it. It's gets this really nice beaten-up, stonewashed finish after rubbing on your keys for awhile. You can see how small it is on my keys here.

Fenix E12 - Compact single AA flashlight that is a great size for putting in your pocket/bag. I have the previous model, the E11, and I love it. Fairly bright for a single AA.

Leatherman Bit Set - I just recently bought this for myself, and it's amazing. I have a Leatherman Wave and a Skeletool CX which use Leatherman bits; some of the lower end Leathermans don't use these. This comes with torx, phillips, flat, hex, and small eyeglass bits.

Solar Panel Cell Phone Charger - I keep this exact model in my backpack with a 6" USB cable. It's basically just a small solar panel with a USB port. Really nice build quality for the price, and it works great. It can charge my phone twice without needing to be charged via computer or sunlight.

I think all of this is under $80 cumulatively.

u/PS3s · 2 pointsr/consolerepair

>It backs up everything for all profiles, and will take up more than a USB stick...

that is not necessarily true. OP said his brother has an original PS3, so he may have only a 20, 40, or 60GB hard drive. 64GB USB flash drives are inexpensive and very common these days. Heck, you can get a 128GB flash drive for $35 delivered right now. moving up to a 256GB, it starts to get expensive.

u/sk9592 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

If you want something rugged that will hold up to falls, dust, and sand, flash memory is the way to go. Much more durable than a hard drive.

Unfortunately, SSDs are outside your price range. If you can make 256GB work for enough movies and TV, then a flash drive like this is worth it.

https://www.amazon.com/PNY-Turbo-256GB-Flash-Drive/dp/B00JN1TOHM/

Just something to think about. Buying two of those might be an option depending on your position. Even one, if you're willing to go with standard definition video content, 256GB will hold weeks worth of entertainment.

u/dmanners · 2 pointsr/homelab

I don't think it does natively, but you may be able to install ntfs-3g on a bootable USB. I'd check out Amazon for their 256GB USB 3 keys. Not an ideal or immediate solution, but it's <$50. Might be worth having around.

There's no point in prefering usb2 over usb3, as it is backwards compatible.

Just make sure the flash drive(s) you get actually takes advantage of usb3, many while claiming to be usb3 perform abysmally. Prefer something like this for instance, which while it is a bit old, it's blazingly fast.

u/JeromeZilcher · 2 pointsr/lgv20

So you are connecting your V20 over USB-C to your laptop using PDAnet+, right? So you got a working internet connection on the PC, right? (This is what I am sometimes doing when working while travelling by bus or train).

So now the UTP/ethernet port of your laptop needs to start acting as a router? Is that where you are stuck?

If so, try googling "internet connection sharing windows 7" or "(...) windows 10", depending on your situation.

I have managed to do something like this (but different), in companion with this (now discontinued) device:

    My situation was different, though:

  • (Paid) camping wifi connection to the laptop for internet access
  • Set up Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the UTP/RJ-45 port of the laptop
  • Attach with CAT-5 patch cable to the Kingston
  • The Kingston would act as a Wifi access point for the various phones and tablets that we were using (this way we did not have to buy Wifi internet access for each single device)

You may not need something like the Kingston, though, because the PS4 has its own UTP/RJ-45 port. You may need a crossover cable, though.

u/minttea2 · 2 pointsr/SubredditDrama

100% right. It is limited. But, you can still have something you can make fairly sharp on a keychain that is good enough for 75% of common urban causal (non-knife-type-work stuff or home use) knife tasks. If dull, you can take care of less. I also have a good AAA flashlight on my key chain. probably almost as good as the crap 2D plastic stuff you find in grocery stores, but not near as good as a "real flashlight".

I keep a lot on my keychain (more than most), including one of those little USB storage things - which are fairly resilient and inexpensive: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SOL9Z1M/

Have you seen Corsair Survivor series? The drive is enclosed in a metal protective case, which is opened by unscrewing the drive from it.

If you want a unique flash drive, I think the best option is to buy one with an all-metal body and have it engraved/acid etched. This seems to be the fastest one available.

Most original-looking flash drives are, unfortunately, quite slow :(

I can't get anything to show up in iFile or Filza. I managed to install CameraConnector on my iOS 10.2 iPhone 6P but the preference bundle is unable to be opened within settings, it needs to be updated.

I have this Samsung USB 3.0 flash drive I just got last week. Plugging it into the CCK directly gives the error message that the devices requires too much power and is incompatible.

For whatever reason, if you use this USB splitter plugged into the CCK and then plug your flash drive into that, it allows you to access the drive...kind of. Your iPhone will automatically launch the Photos app to a tab called Import but nothing will show up if you don't have any photos/videos in a folder called DCIM. I was able to import pictures and videos from the flash drive after I put them within a folder on the drive.

The catch is that you can only import files from the drive in Photos app, you can't watch or view them from the drive. You can only see the thumbnails. And nothing in iFile or Filza works any more. I used the tweak Mounted and also CameraConnector and I got nothing.

Also, I then formatted the drive to HFS+ or whatever and put a video on the drive. My phone reboots after about 10 seconds after plugging it in. This has happened twice now.

PS, this Digital/Analog Converter works for me as long as I have a separate power source for the DAC using another USB splitter that splits the power and data into two separate cables.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

I was in the same boat. Here were my considerations...

  • Fast write-speeds: to capture continuous video write to the disk
  • Large Capacity and inexpensive stick: fewer read/write per sector makes it more reliable/longer lasting
  • Large and expensive SSD)
  • Endurance/commercial type for more read/write cycles and hotter/colder temps
  • Small form factor: not so big/rigid to avoid possibility of breaking while in tight area
  • WiFi capability: to get the data on/off without physical transfer

and what i ended up deciding...

Based on the feedback so far, I'm leaning toward the Sandisk Ultra Fit.

In order of importance, my decision factors...

  • The small form factor will reduce the chance of me hitting it accidentally and possibly breaking the port.

  • It is fairly cheap at $19 for 64GB version. This allows me to store at least 1 day of video at least 2000 miles of driving (over a month of driving) and reduce the number of re-writes.

  • The write-speed is not a factor, but USB 3.0 should be more future proof if Tesla changes the system, or if i re-purpose the drive to another task. If you want the older version with 2.0, it is even less expensive.

  • Endurance doesn't seem to be a popular concern, so ignoring it for now. I am slightly concerned with operating temperature [32°F to 113°F (0°C to 45°C)] and storage temp [14°F to 158°F (-10°C to 70°C)], but we'll see how it goes this winter. Those more further north than me can report in if they have success or failure.

  • I also ignored the WiFi capability because if i need to unplug the device, there is no reason to use it. I'm still curious if SD based cards like the Toshiba Flash Air W-04 would have a different behavior. I bought one for my digital camera, so i'll give it a try in the Tesla too. The cost is significantly higher, but if i can access dash cam videos from my cell phone and before getting home and without unplugging, that would be a big plus. (also need to find the right SD to USB adapter.)

Thanks for helping me think it out.

- Freenas is based on Freebsd, which takes a bit longer to support/optimize for new platforms. That being said, Freebsd fully supports Ryzen at this point in time. The only caveat is that most motherboards will not support ECC memory with an APU such as the 2200g.

- Microsoft has made great strides with Windows Storage Spaces in terms of performance, but I'll be damned if ill trust a windows os with my data. They are just too unreliable in terms of updates breaking things badly, poor code that causes memory leaks and other nasty things that are directly opposed to some of the main tenets of a storage solution: Uptime&Stability

This being said, for a small business, your most likely carefree experience will actually come to a platform that is tested by time, with the advantage of being very cost efficient. ECC DDR3 ram is very inexpensive right now, and the performance difference from a dual Xeon motherboard with 32gb of ddr3 to a Ryzen with the same amount will be minimal, while probably costing you a fraction.

I wish some law would be passed making "Industry standard and current removable memory" (SD cards, but worded in a way that if something else came along to dethrone SD it would be included) and "industry standard and current wired connectors" (micro-usb, but worded in a way that USB type C could replace it) would be mandatory for a phone to receive FCC approval.

Offload your archived documents to an external hard drive. The simplest method is to use a SanDisk Wireless Stick. It appears as a drive on your iPhone and you can copy directly to it and leave it safely at home. You can get 128GB for $70 US. For more security with your documents, buy a second drive and keep one at a friend or relative's house so in case of catastrophe you don't lose ALL of your data. Every few months, swap drives so you're adding to one while the other is safely away from home.

A better solution is to run a file server, but it will cost you $300 more with drive. Synology is a great choice and offers you the ability to serve files, calendars, music, movies, security video, notes, even your own cloud storage and store it all in a redundant array of disks that (nearly) guarantee you won't lose anything because one drive failed. It's more money, more work to set up, but it is extremely flexible. Synology is good about making the setup significantly easier than trying to run Windows Server or any Linux file server.

These are far from free options, however it does highlight that there is a cost to keeping things even if it isn't physical space.

  1. I don't see why not - Yubikey supports A and NFC concurrently, and USB C is still USB, just with a different interface. I mean, you could hack it in via duplicating the USB A channels & pipe one of them into a USB A -> USB C adapter? You already have this in the form of flash drives - https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Ultra-128GB-Type-C-SDDDC2-128G-G46/dp/B01EZ0X55C

The packaging suggest that the usb cable is intended to only charge it - they have good reason to omit data lines in protecting key leakage (although you could potentially perform power analysis on it? i'm not sure!), so I can't imagine firmware updates could be done through that micro-usb port. Furthermore, it provides a reason for Google to sell more keys!

  3. I suppose the benefits would be down to the open source nature - theres less reason to suspect backdoors, + if a component on the board breaks (other than the memory of course), you could replace it without having to get a new auth token and pair it with all your existing services.

Edit: As a test I plugged in my old USB drive that failed after everytime driving the car. I am on 42.3 and it is still working after almost 24 hours and multiple short trips around town. so it looks like they may have fixed the issue with the new update.

One useful note. While you cant extend the pixel's storage, you can still get USB dangles that can be plugged in relatively easily. It's not perfect, but it's useful for transferring large files on and off, if required outside good signal areas.

This: the sandisk extreme pro. cheap at 45 dollars for 128 gb. these sandisk extreme pros have ssd controllers inside them, so they are super fast for flash drives. fast enough that i run an entire instance of windows 10 off one, and it works very well. they are not as fast as traditional sata or m.2 ssds in an enclosure, but can hit 300/400 meg a second, or at least 200 in other cases. i have one, and it is by FAR the fastest usb drive i have.

The smaller flash drives seem to be just microSD card housings and so top out well under 100 MB/s write speed, a bit slow for copying 1440p/4K 60fps content.

Also went with a 128GB Samsung Evo Select SD card, much better write speeds than the Samsung Evo+ in the $99 immersive preorder promo.

Does anyone have recommendations for a drive that's more durable? I saw someone mention https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D7P4SY4/ as one but I don't see anywhere on that page where it indicates it'll hold up.

u/youngeli · 2 pointsr/teslamotors

Having issues with my USB drive for the dashcam. I have two Model 3s, both are SR+, one with FSD and one without. I originally ordered two of these (Samsung 256GB Flash drive) as I saw it recommended on this subreddit. After one of the most recent software updates, both cars started saying that the write speed was too slow. Unplugging and plugging the flash drive back in was a temporary workaround, but after a few minutes or hours the error message would come back, and I confirmed that nothing was being recorded to the drive when the error message was being displayed.

After doing additional research, I ordered this (SanDisk MobileMate microSD card reader) and this (SanDisk 256GB high endurance MicroSD card, specifically advertised for usage with dash cams). It worked fine for me for about 10 days, and then my car simply stopped recognizing it. I plugged it into my computer and confirmed there was nothing wrong with it, it still had all my sentry mode recordings up until November 15th, and then nothing. I ultimately decided to reformat the card again (using Disk Utility on Mac, using FAT) and still the car will not recognize it. I tried it on the other Model 3 and it also does not recognize it, so either Tesla did something again in the most recent software update, or something went wrong with the drive? Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

Does it look like this? Does it have an ethernet port in the back? If so, it's a slim. However, I think some newer models may not support FMCB. You can just pirate the Nexus copy, I don't think anyone realistically cares. With that being said, once you get back to your PS2, if you will any time soon, then I can tell you how to get FMCB and the like.

You may want two memory cards for this, though. Or one large memory card. FMCB installs on your memory card and it's a huge file in comparison to most standard memory cards.

With that being said, it may be a pain to set up, but every single Armored Core game in Gens 1-3 other than Formula Front is supported flawlessly (as far as I've seen) via OPL (Open PS2 Loader) and POPSTARTER. Loading times might be a bit shorter or longer, but I've never had any sort of jarring gameplay issues that may be present on emulator.

If you're wondering any of the costs:

  1. If you need memory cards: Link - $13

  2. Cheap USB Thumb Drive Link - $5

  3. Swap Magic: Link $25

If you already have a cheap thumb drive lying around as well as spare memory cards, you only need to pay 25 bucks. You can use this to get cfw on your PS2 and then you can use a SAMBA connection to play your PS2 games. You can trust me on this as I'm not only a moderator of this subreddit, but also a moderator of /r/PS2, /r/PS3Hacks, /r/PS3Homebrew, /r/PS4Homebrew, and the PlayStation Homebrew discord server. ASIC is a generic term for a dedicated piece of circuitry - for example, this thumb drive. Reading the product reviews, though, indicates that given the current BT difficulty, the return on said specialized device is so minimal that you wouldn't really be profiting.

u/ostracize · 1 pointr/Bitcoin

The hub itself is useless for mining, but some miners use a hub like that with a collection of these:

http://www.amazon.com/ASICMiner-Block-Erupter-USB-Sapphire/dp/B00CUJT7TO

u/Skyshark29 · 1 pointr/Silverbugs

Amazon source to buy these cheap:
http://www.amazon.com/ASICMiner-Block-Erupter-USB-Sapphire/dp/B00CUJT7TO

At today's conversion rate these "should" pay for them selves in the first 30 days (approx $15 a month per USB device income @ $200 per BTC, and these cost less than $12 each, not counting shipping and electricity consumed. (These consume very little compared to graphics card mining)

TL:DR - For $12 + shipping you can mine your own Bitcoin with a little research (Google it)

u/rockkit · 1 pointr/BitcoinMining

I suggest you buy an ASICminer Block Erupter. It costs 1/2 as much as a video card and uses 1/150th of the power.

http://www.amazon.com/ASICMiner-Block-Erupter-300MH-Sapphire/dp/B00CUJT7TO

Note however, that in (September?) the price will be dropping to $20 a unit.

http://thegenesisblock.com/asicminer-usb-bitcoin-miner-price-drops-80-to-0-175-btc/ http://launch.avalon-asics.com/

Mining with video cards is now a loud, hot, expensive waste of time. Up until a month ago it was profitable in some situations, but now there's really no point.

If you like hacking with hardware (and you seem to be the type that does), you should try running your Block Erupters using a Raspberry Pi as the host computer, and Mine Peon as the operating system:

http://www.raspberrypi.org/
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=251675.0

It's awesome. You just literally copy over the firmware, plug it in, and it works. There's even one guy on the forums running his ASIC miners this way using a solar panel as the power source.

u/Coinosphere · 1 pointr/Bitcoin

I remember this argument was the reason for a mining push back when ASIC Block Erupters (https://www.amazon.com/ASICMiner-Block-Erupter-USB-Sapphire/dp/B00CUJT7TO) first hit the scene in 2013.

Everyone I know bought a bunch of these little cuties, and I think the hashrate did see a tiny, tiny upward push for a week or less.

But then the very next model of antminer or something came out and wiped the previous hashrate level away like it was dust in the wind. Then another 2 weeks later. Then another and another.

Simply put, the hashrate grows way, way way, way way way too fast for this. It will always be economically correct to buy the most efficient mining rig and lots of it.

u/rectic · 1 pointr/iamverysmart

GPU mining died around 2013 when ASICS were nearing completed development and while they tested them, difficulty shot through the roof, and even more once released, which made it more expensive to just power GPU rigs than the coins were worth

EDIT: just one of the latest ATI cards mines about 1-1.5 KH/s. As you can see, for 30 bucks and VERY LOW power, this device can do 330MH/s which is about 300x more.

http://www.amazon.com/ASICMiner-Block-Erupter-USB-Sapphire/dp/B00CUJT7TO

So this is why GPU mining went down hill. (these were much more expensive 3 years ago, but still.)

u/zagaberoo · 1 pointr/Bitcoin

If you really want to mine as a hobbyist, you could plunk down $30 and get one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/ASICMiner-Block-Erupter-USB-Sapphire/dp/B00CUJT7TO/

You won't earn much coin, but it is a fun and interesting learning experience to mine.

My critique of your question.

Your hardware options are wide open. Anything that will support AMD-V or VT-d (no need for VT-x) will work. Some will say 8GB of ram is ok, I'd recommend 16GB to give yourself breathing room.

If you want to be lazy a Dell PowerEdge T110 II will fit your needs. Processor details. By lazy I mean not worrying too much about hardware details and focusing on setting up a backup solution, XBMC (Kodi), Lychee. I highly recommend booting whatever OS for virtualization off of USB to separate your hypervisor from your VM data. This way if the hypervisor takes a shit (it shouldn't) your VMs are safe. In your case it allows you to rebuild the RAID array without worrying about losing your host configuration settings.

Expect this to take you longer than 10 days, the time between now and christmas, unless you can dedicate all your time to the project.

I looked through your post and recommendations, it looks awesome! I know I really should wait for the Hero5 but I'm not sure if I can wait.

I started to put a list of things I want/need into a spreadsheet, to start looking at Price. I have Amazon Prime so I'm thinking about ordering everything through Amazon.

Can you take a quick look through my list and see if everything checks out and if I missed anything for "Basic" operations? Then could you make any more recommendations, or let me know what my next purchases should be?

  • GoPro HERO4 SILVER- $338

  • Memory Card Lexar 64GB- $35, Looks like the cheapest one between Sandisk Extreme and Lexar, Lexar currently is the cheapest on Amazon

  • Batteries - Wasabi Power Battery (2-Pack)- $22, Read a few reviews and people said they like these batteries a lot. Should give me enough juice and let me know how long I can record with, until I'm completely dead.

  • Protection Lens - $7 I really just need to lens protector, in the reviews people are saying some parts don’t fit the Hero4 only the Hero3. Or should I put the $20 version off the actual GoPro site?

  • GoPro The Tool$4, Like you requested and reading some comments it looks like it would be worth it.

  • A basic Card Reader - $7, did a quick google search on best card readers this one popped up for best for it’s price.

  • SANDMARC® Pole - $40, Looked up some reviews and people tend to like this one. It seems like is always recommended to have some kind of stick or holdable mount to start off with. Also could you go into a little more detail about mounting the GoPro?

  • Pelican Case -$25 I like the idea of it being waterproof and I like to be organized with my stuff. So this looks like a perfect fit. And it will be an awesome case to travel with.

  • Kingston 5-in-1 Mobile Companion - $35 I was watching some videos and it seems like this could be a cool little gadget to have. I would mostly use it for “mobile uploads to Hard Drives”. Working in IT I know how important it is to have backups, and this will let me get around bringing a laptop to the resort and other stuff. This is the video I’m referring too that shows you how to upload to a HD with out a computer.

So with everything in my cart I’m sitting at $488 which is with in my budget.

I’m still reading about the remote. That might be something we add down the line. I think I’ll be pretty content with just my phone app or getting the “waterproof touch screen” case cover too.

Do you think this is a good setup? Will this get me going? Do you have any recommendations, or anything that I should add or not buy yet?

Internet backup isn't always available, especially when backpacking around in Asia. What I do instead is keep a wireless usb stick in my pocket and my computer automatically backs up all work files to that incrementally every 5 minutes. This also protects me if my computer gets stolen out my room because the usb stick always goes with me.

Just get a low profile USB thumb drive. They are dirt cheap ($20 for 64GB) or $40 for 128GB. That's a ton of music, no weird wifi thing needed.

u/reynhout · 1 pointr/GalliumOS

For reference, this is the previous-gen Samsung: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B013CCTNKU

The current-gen appear to be bigger and clunkier, and I have not used them. I have also used the low-profile Lexar USB drives. They're a bit slower and have a big bright blue LED when active. This is useful for some purposes (writing ISOs is mine) but is surely annoying for an always-connected drive.

SanDisk might be the best option. Or an SD card of course. I don't remember if EDGAR has a fully-recessed SD reader though.

$100 will get you a head unit with Bluetooth audio streaming (typically with Pandora support as well), USB port, AUX port, CD player, installation guide, mounting hardware, and wiring adapters. All you need is a Saturday afternoon, a soldering iron or crimping set, and a screwdriver. I was amazed at how such a small change, going from CDs to USB (I did this several years ago before Bluetooth was really affordable), could make me so much happier in/with my car. Well see, this is the thing about the MBP's butterfly keyboard, it's like no other keyboard I've ever used before. The keys have a decent amount of space between them, at least for a laptop, but the keys themselves are so low, so flush to the case, I just don't get how dust/crumbs/etc actually even gets in under the keys tbh. Only way I can see stuff getting in is when you press the key, so you'd have to already have stuff laying on/around the key waiting to get in when you pressed it for something to get under the key.

It's not like a desktop keyboard where you drop something on it and it just disappears between the keys, you can easily wipe/blow off whatever you dropped on the keys off without having them suffer as long as you don't press the affected keys themselves and (obviously) whatever you dropped wasn't liquid. (I've had to do this, accidentally spilled some crumbs from morning toast on my keyboard very early on, was deathly scared I had just killed my keyboard but I just blew them off with a can of compressed air).

I too am using my MBP for programming and I love the keyboard. I sort of miss having an actual physical escape key and function keys, but I've slowly gotten over it. Don't mind having only C ports, got a sandisk dual flash drive one side C the other A, and a portable hub from alldongles.com and I'm totally set.

I would recommend something similar to this (below) if you need to make use of a 128GB+ USBkey/drive:

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01MU8TZRV

  • Advertised Read Speed: 420 MB/s
  • Advertised Write Speed: 380 MB/s

Some amazon reviews (in the link above) have it benchmarked, the top review has a crystaldisk benchmark screenshot with Read: 368 MB/s - Write: 344MB/s.

(yes this is 35x+ faster at writing than the OP link).

There's a technology difference between "old" and "new usb drives (the new ones are basically tiny SSDs and thus the speeds are great). They cost a little bit more, but they're actually usuable for the amount of data you want to manage/transfer/use from the drive.
u/vernochan · 1 pointr/techsupport

SATA To USB Converters run over the USB protocoll. USB 3.0 is an immensly powerful protocoll and i don't think any thumb drive will really be throttled by usb 3.0.

But in addition to the USB protocoll, a flashdrive also needs good memory modules to get good speeds. most flash drives seem to be stuck at ~100-150mb/s. But there are faster options. I got a SanDisk extreme that gets around 200-250mb/s. There are even faster ones like this: https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SDCZ880-128G-G46-Extreme-128GB-Solid/dp/B01MU8TZRV/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=sandisk+extreme+usb&qid=1556859955&s=gateway&sr=8-2
Most of the time, those flash drives are a bit more pricey.

u/garignack · 1 pointr/classicwow

Able to: Yes

Have to wait forever for loading screens and other operations that read/write from disk: Count on it.

If you are going to try it, i would suggest getting a fast USB like the Sandisk Extreme Pro and making sure you are using a usb3.0 (Blue) or USB 3.1(Red) port.

Or slightly faster:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MU8TZRV/

u/papadopolis · 1 pointr/teslamotors

it could be the case of write speed or it could be something else causing to not even start recording due to immediate corruption, cant say I have tried that type on usb/sandisk but I hope I can keep gathering information so I can provide the best option for owners to use without having to keep playing with different USB drives like its a deck of cards.

Edit: I'm talking with some guys that dabble a bit and they suggest for long term use Sandisk 128GB or 256GB USB 3.1 Solid State Flash Drive should be very well suited but what it comes down to would be if Tesla would have USB 3.1 ports in the front section to support the fast write speed that the aforementioned can handle. In the model 3 manual it talks about the rear ports being 2.0 and no mention to what the fronts are. Assuming the front are the same do they plan on it being retrofitted with 3.1 ports.

if they keep adding more cameras into the mix how would they address that (potential?) bottleneck

Edit 2: front USB is a 3.0 port so that's good news.

u/insomniac_koala · 1 pointr/techsupport

Could you recommend me a small flash drive that's pretty fast and tiny or are those the best I can get? I might just get the 128gb version of my old drive haha. Would this be even faster than the other two? And is this about as good? I don't need to have a 3.1 port in my PC to be able to sustain those speeds, do I?

u/bzzking · 1 pointr/DataHoarder

I am highly leaning towards the Samsung Bar Plus 128GB USB 3.1 or Kingston Data Traveler 128GB USB 3.0 and I am worried about the speed. The Samsung 3.1 USB has a read speed of only 300 MB/s for USB 3.1, although I can't take advantage of the 3.1 right now, shouldn't it be much faster read speed or am I thinking of the write speed?

A nice fast 3GB/s NVMe SSD would be six times faster than a SATA SSD. I'd recommend at least 1TB; 2TB for room to grow. It will give the most immediate and thorough performance gains. Unfortunately to get the most out of it, it'll have to be the system drive, which means a reinstall of the system.

Get a Windows 10 Pro key from eBay from a good seller with 99/100% feedback and lots of sales for like $5.

Buy a 300MB/s 64GB flash drive from Amazon for $15: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07D7P4SY4

Set up the flash drive with Windows 10 Pro: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Disconnect the old drives and hook up the new NVMe drive by itself. Install Windows 10 Pro. With the fast flash drive and NVMe system drive, it'll take like 5 minutes to go from booting the install to the desktop. It's so fast.

Once it's installed, shut down and hook the old drives back up again to copy over what he needs, but they'll be very slowwww compared to the new drive. Use the old drive(s) for backups or cold storage.

You could even buy one of these too boot off of. I experimented with it for a few days. Its not quite as fast as the SSD but works much better than the SD card.

I mean something like this vs something like this From my understanding you can purchase an HD USB stick and a SSD USB stick, is that wrong? If so why is there such a large price difference when both are 3.0 and use the same storage?

Yes, but my drive died, found out that the internal is the same as https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JN1TOHM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and replaced it. Just snapped right in.

I been using Asus Oplayer with moore services for year. it aging and he stutter a 1080 movie with a lot of movements more and more.

I got Firestick(not TV) and rpi2.

Rpi2 run much faster than Firestick. after I figure out SD card is slow.

If you end up going with rpi2 get a fast USB stick load the Kodi on.. SD card is slow as useless. May be there are other SD cards that work better.. I got this one and sucked. So I went with this.. it install fast and very fast UI.

You'll still need SD card to boot the pi. I use OSMC and it have option to install to USB stick.. All you do is use their program, tell it you want to install on USB Stick. The OS and image will be loaded on SD card.

Install Stick on rpi2, install SD card on rpi2 and boot and let it do it thing.

They should put mSSD slot on next version of pi.

I bought the below Samsung stick so wouldn’t really call it cheap and it definitely meets Tesla’s requirements.
Samsung MUF-64AB/AM FIT Plus 64GB - 200MB/s USB 3.1 Flash Drive https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D7P4SY4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_RuC5CbGCADK6E

From everything I've read USB 3.0 is fine if you stay under 64gb. I followed a guide online and grabbed this one. I used a guide I found online and it worked for me.

Gamecube is easy to load from SD with USB Loader GX.

I think you can check into WiiFlow about loading wii games from SD. I am pretty sure USB Loader GX can't load WII from sd cards. It doesnt work for me anyways.

I am loading my wii games from USB stick. Even an 8gb usb will work but you have to load 1 game at a time.
