My favorite two books on the subject are The Witches' God and The Witches' Goddess by Janet and Stewart Farrar. It not only gives you a lot of good information on how our vision of the Lord and Lady came to be what they are today, but also a lot of thought experiments about thinking about deity in your own practice and working with those energies. They're very eye opening, IMO

Slavic Wheel of the Year

I think this is mainly polish. My Ukranian friend gave me these correspondences:

Jare Gody = Velykden (sort of like Easter, but with a folk twist)

Dziady = Holy Trinity Day or we aslo do Maslenitsa (I think these are different dates)

Kupala Night – same across the border – love this one, my fav!

Plony or Dożynki = Obzhynki (not so popular J) I don’t know much about it

Szczodre Gody = Sviata Vecheria (the night before Christmas when devil comes to visit a witch in the village :)

Edit: abebooks.com is a great resource for cheap used books. I use it over amazon when possible. The best way to search is to copy the ISBN from amazon and use that as the search term. I

I found the book Angels, Demons, and Gods of a New Millennium by Lon Milo Duquette to be quite helpful in putting the original into a modern context that I could chew on. This book is actually more a collection of essays, and there is just one chapter on the Emerald Tablet.

u/ryhanb · 3 pointsr/astrology

If you're trying to utilize astrology to get a deeper understanding of magic, I don't think relying on modern astrological ideas and mythological interpretations is going to help you. The modern psychological approach to astrology is historically framed itself as anti-spiritual or magical in an effort to get scientific approval. More ancient forms of astrology, however, embrace the spiritual side of the art and astrology is even one of the three hermetic sciences alongside alchemy and magic.

I'd recommend Traditional Astrology for Today and Temples of the Sky as starting texts. Along the same lines, Francis Barret's The Magus was a surprisingly good book about astrological magic and Qabalah.

Peter Carrol's Psybermagick.

u/arethereany · 2 pointsr/occult

The only thing that I can truly recommend is to meditate on who and what you 'truly' are. You can use aids to assist, if you believe they will help. But ultimately, it's a journey that must be walked alone, and one you must choose to take. I found this chapter in Crowley's Magick in Theory and Practice useful in my journey.

u/lunaiora · 2 pointsr/witchcraft

I'm hoping this will actually get me back into reading as well as gaining information on the craft, Wicca and paganism.

I'm currently reading Witchcraft: A Beginner's Guide to Witchcraft by Sophie Cornish and The Witch's Journal: Charms, Spells, Potions & Enchantments by Selene Silverwind.

Edit: I've also heard that anything by Scott Cunningham is worth reading.

Dead folk are generally shunned because they will drain the life out of the living if they can. No one wants to be dead because there is always more of life to be enjoyed. People can be too ill to enjoy life due conditions of mind and body. A deceased righteous ancestor's connection to God empowers them to contact and help the living in essential matters ( clearing up curses, finding work and supporting well- being etc) This is why you can ask the decease to join you in your prayers. A deceased relative who died in a state of illness, poverty etc needs prayer and needs to be kept at distance because they are like drowning people who will pull you after them.

Some branches of magick use raw meat and blood to link the practioner and spirit. I recommend against this because raw meat is rarely safe for consumption.

Draja Mickaharic's Book below provides and overview and introduction to practice:

I would highly recommend the book The 21st Century Mage. The author takes the Abramelin ritual but he modernizes it, but while still including the original ritual in case you want to follow it strictly how it was written.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

The Nu-sphere is a substitute for the LBRP developed by Thelemite Rodney Orpheus. He wrote a very popular book on Thelemic Magick called "Abrahadabra." It appears in his book,
https://www.amazon.com/Abrahadabra-Understanding-Aleister-Crowleys-Thelemic/dp/1578633265

but you can find the ritual instructions at:
http://rodneyorpheus.com/magick/nusphere.html

One thing you may notice in this ritual is that the elements don't match the "typical" order and the ritual goes counter-clockwise instead of the LBRP clockwise. Neither of these things are an issue, especially once you understand ritual construction. It takes its cue on this point from Liber Reguli and the revised Liber XXV: The Star Ruby that can be found in Liber ABA and Gems from the Equinox, and the original version of Liber XXV in The Book of Lies chapter 25.

I am very familiar with the Thelemic Order of the Golden Dawn and am working with their material in conjunction with other order work. I admit, I do not like their Thelemic version of the LBRP and would just as soon use either the original, the Star Ruby, or the Nu-Sphere instead. Don't get me wrong, their revised LBRP isn't BAD, I just don't like how it feels and honestly I far prefer the Star Ruby instead (which is suggested learning for the Neophyte in the TOGD anyhow).

Love is the law, love under will.

I actually used a 1" bound book but it started to pucker to much as I like to glue in paper and leaves etc. I had to disect the book and used the original cover with holes punched in. I also used plastic page protectors rather then punch holes in the paper.

The book: http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/0919345662/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I was hoping to use screw posts but could not find them for the life of me. So i used bolts and connector caps such as these: http://www.homehardware.ca/en/rec/index.htm/Hardware/Fasteners/Fasteners/Miscellaneous/2-Pack-1-4-20-x-12mm-Antique-Bronze-Connector-Cap-Nuts/_/N-ntjtnZ2pqfZ67l/Ne-67n/Ntk-All_EN/R-I2129641?Ntt=bolt

Probably your best bet is this version which is 480 odd pages long and includes analysis as well as retranslation. The hard copy is ludicrously expensive, but the kindle edition quite cheap.
