7. I would consider replacing the desk lamp with something that puts all the light directly on the desk. You have a floor uplight in the background giving you plenty of indirect light. You don't need to stare at a lit up globe all day on your desk too

To anyone that has an unfrosted window in their shower, you can buy window frost film. Been there, done that.

This is the one we used but it was my moms purchase and she splurged a little more than some can, I know there's cheaper options available as well!

Two questions:

• Can you make an infinity mirror out of two two-way mirrors instead of one normal mirror and one two-way mirror? If you did that, would you see the tunnel effect no matter which side you look through?

I got the idea trolling around /r/diy, it has a mirror on the bottom, LED's in the middle (hole going down at a 45 degree angle in the side for the wires), and a piece of glass with a privacy reflective film applied to it.

The light bounces back and forth creating the 'tunnel' effect, while some of it escapes so you can see it.

I know you asked for curtain suggestions, but I'm guessing your concern is related to the heat and glare from the sun, and not privacy? IF it's the heat/glare, I'd suggest mirrored film instead of curtains. My SO and I have a trawler, and many of the windows have unusual shapes that don't really allow for curtains. We got these and they work like a dream. Much cooler, and (just slightly) reduces the brightness.

Put up a translucent piece of plastic/film, so people can't see thru the windows but light still gets in?

I'm building one right now as a christmas gift for my fiance. I wanted to build a prototype first though before shelling out big bucks for the real double sided mirrors.

Make a frame with a bit of thickness. Put a regular mirror on one side. Mount an LED strip along the inside edges of the frame. Get a piece of plexiglass and some one-way mirror film to cover one side of it. Place the plexiglass, mirror-side, towards the real mirror.

You don't need to buy another light. You could get an OP reflector or a 60° TIR lens directly from Simon. Or put some DCFix milky over the lens. Or send the glass lens through some 220 sandpaper. Or convert it to a triple.

Here's the exact thing making that reflection if you're curious. As the sun moves, so does the reflection and my dog is sleeping in that spot a good amount of the day, so it's not that unlikely that they would line up at certain times. Considering this is my fourth post in five years, I don't think I'm very hungry for those internet points, but if trying to paint me as a liar makes you feel better then I can go along with it if that's something you really need.

I have a light that I'm particularly fond of, but I find its beam too focused and "throwy" for edc use, so I made a removable diffuser for it.

I started with DC Fix film. Its a common product sold as a window treatment. I've used it before on other lights, but I wanted it to be easily removable in this case. So here's what I did:

First, I laid a bit of Saran Wrap out on my kitchen counters as smoothly as I could and stuck a square of DC Fix right in the flattest spot. Then I laid my light's bezel upside down on the square to use as a template. After tracing and cutting around the resulting circle, I'm left with a small circle of DC Fix, stuck to clingy Saran Wrap. It'll easily stick to my kitchen windows. With the light reassembled, it just lays right in.

It seems to stick very well and doesn't fall out on its own. I can't get it out by hand at all, not even with my fingernails. I have to take the point of a knife along the edge to pop it up out of there. Time will tell, but I think it'll hold up quite well.

To show the effects, I took two whitewall beamshots at pretty close range, probably 1.5 meters or so with camera on full manual, so no funky exposure tricks. Then I took two "real world" beamshots in my kids' toyroom at about 4 meters. Again the camera was on full manual but it kinda overexposed a bit. I should've taken a bit more time with it, set up a tripod, etc, but I didn't. Hopefully its still illustrative of the difference.

  In addition, I put the light to my homemade "Integrating Amazon Box" and found about a 10% reduction in output -- 222 lumens without the film, 197 with. As should be expected, however, it feels like a bigger drop since the light is more diffused.
  
  I really like the beam that results from using the DC Fix on a small focused light. If you've got an edc light that you really like but you wish were a bit more floody, maybe give this a try.

I bought it on Amazon They have different sizes but this was best for my window. Be sure to clean the window thoroughly and then be generous when spraying with water. I did it myself but it would definitely be easier with two people. I was worried it would look tacky but it actually looks good. I don’t even think anyone will notice (I live in a condo).

With the current setup, I'd consider moving that Aeon F. print (!) to the wall with your Kesey poster print. Awesome wall art, btw. I'd put a floating wood shelf on the TV wall, painted off-white to match your baseboards and that Hudson Bay Point blanket. I'd stick a small row of vintage paperbacks on it and a couple bookshelf speakers for the oncoming record player. Bluetooth to avoid the wires, if possible.

 

I'd put the turntable on a small stand on the right, below the art, utilizing that plug. Or I'd get a new console with clean lines that takes up most of the TV wall and can accommodate both.

 

I'd say you need a bigger rug, partly tucked under the sofa. Some sort of 'faded navy' seems right to me-- either flatwoven, or a distressed pattern like the current rug. That way you could connect with the beige walls of the unit (the faded), but tie in with the red and yellow of your art and the Hudson throw (navy).

 

The current format is home office one side, living area the other. Seems like you enjoy reading, and want to collect some records, but don't want to live in a home library. If that's the case, I'd consider media storage on the desk side. You could move the desk a bit and put a row of Kallax behind the sofa. This also would make a surface for reading lamps / plants / decor... or MacBook when sitting at the desk. But it means you're walking in to a wall of books and records.

 

The other option is to put it on the door wall. This would make the room divide less heavy. Provide an entry surface for keys and mail. And you could move the plants off the sill for easier blinds action. Either way, this would probably require a smaller desk and/or tweaking.

 

Other thoughts- I'd go white (or baseboard off-white) for the blackout curtains. A burnt yellow planter on the table. Paint the corkboard frame black. One thing- the coffee table looks very tall in the pics. Hairpin legs are pretty affordable on Amazon. Love that wooden tray in the bathroom.

Do you need to keep her away from the window or just prevent her from looking out of it? My first thought was some temporary privacy film, but I am not sure if that will work for your training purposes.

Here is a video explaining how to do it with led and show a small model. The TLDW video is that you create a box, have a mirror in the back, whatever you want to show on the inside of the box with lights, and the view part has a material that is reflective on one side (Plexiglass + mirrored window film put as the cover you see through and the reflective is on the inside).

Put some Window Film like this on your windows. I live in the high desert and i did this to our windows and the plants are absolutely thriving. You can get really cool styles of film or get creative and create designs that are both useful and decorative. On one of my windows I cut the film to look like mountains that reach 3/4 of the way up the window. Then I hung some Full Sun plants to block out excess sunlight and now I have a curtain of green. I like it! Love the color counters with the cabinets. I would remove the curtains all together. IMO it makes it look more dated and closed in. If you want privacy try something like this: privacy window film

A suggestion for covering windows: I just got frosted privacy film from Amazon. It was fairly inexpensive ($30 for a whole sliding glass door), easy to install, and is a breeze to remove. You can try covering the bottom half of the windows with something similar and see if it helps

I would think the crates would be good if for nothing else but to give them something familiar, but that's just a thought.

If you're concerned about windows, can you get some of that window-cling material that obscures views? I've not had an issue with this, but I've seen other people use it. Something like this

I've only once had an issue with a dog not wanting to potty on-leash. I think if your two are used to it in other contexts, they will catch on quickly.

When my puppy notices something from the window I immediately get his attention before barking and get him to sit and treat him for it. He then watches silently, we’re still working on it but I have noticed a slight improvement.

So first off, congrats on trying to improve yourself! When tackling a project like this-it can get overwhelming. Break it up into small parts. Start small and in one corner and work your way around. Before moving furniture or anything, your FIRST job is to find a corner and work on that. Bring in a trash bag and throw out anything that's trash. Bring in a box and put anything in it that you don't use or need. (That's for storage.) Bring in a third box-put anything in it that you are going to keep in your room. Continue putting items in those until everything is de-cluttered from the room. (NOT the closets, that's another project!).

Keep that box of everything for the room in the room (put it on the bed for now, just someplace out of the way.)

The window treatment. See if you can pick up some blackout film. I found some on Amazon here You can keep the curtain blinds and still keep light out.

Next step-add more light. Lamps work wonders. If possible, look into a mood light or smart bulb. You don't want a BRIGHT light if you're relaxing and if you're studying you want something that will energize you.

Now, you should have a fairly clean & empty room (minus furniture.) Move and adjust it around until it "feels right."

Once you have everything arranged, sleep on it a night. See how it feels when you wake up. Once its working for you, then start putting things back into place. Try to add baskets or boxes or storage. De-cluttered and organized helps keep your mind clear. A messy room can make your mind feel messy (if that makes sense.)

And don't forget to wash your bedding - you'd be amazed at how good clean bedding can make you feel when you slip into it!

Had a friend go through something similar. Not sure what the legal advice was, but they definitely put mirrored film on the window targeted by the spotlight. The end result more or less negated the problem.

I would assume there might be feral cats outside that they can smell and that might be winding them up. Talk to the vet about this as a possibility if you think it might be true. If it's a sight-related thing, i.e. they can see cats outside that are putting them on edge, you could cover the bottom of your windows with frosted film. If it's because ferals are spraying, you may need to look into ways to dissuade the ferals or get them moved.


If your vet deems it necessary, you may be able to get your cats on anti-anxiety meds, basically Prozac for cats.

This window film is a quick fix if you want him to stop practicing this behavior ASAP.

I don't think so, but only because of the high CRI request. The Jetbeam E10R, Fenix RC05, and Skilhunt M150 all meet most of your other criteria (the Jetbeam is pretty focused, though it's actually got the nicest LED). You could look into swapping LEDs on any of those, or you could just get the Jetbeam and slap on some DC Fix to flood out the beam. It won't be high-CRI, but it'll have nice tint.

NTA I hate unannounced visitors too and usually don't answer the door. Your MIL is not respecting your boundaries and you have the right to refuse to be walked all over. I got this film to put on my front windows so no one can peek in. It sticks to the window by static electricity so you can take it down whenever you want without harming the window. It lets natural light in, but you can't see through it.

We used this on our upstairs bathroom window and it looks beautiful from the inside and out. If you want something more curtain-y, but don't want to spend a ton of money in case the kids pull it down, I suggest using drop cloths from Home Depot. My friend did this in her home and they turned out looking really great!

THIS. I've used this stuff in several places that I have lived. Home Depot sells it, and it's easy to put on. They also have "designer" film, such as stained glass, bamboo, flowers, etc. it's really pretty when the light hits it, and adds a touch of style and fun!

reddiquette I made one of these a while back, here's how I made it. Obviously feel free to the substitute the materials I listed for whatever you want. The final product (I'll post pics later) wasn't exactly beautiful, but it works!

Materials:

-Some type of container that will make up the structure of your infinity mirror. I used a paper mache box that is sturdy and able to easily open up


-A mirror. This should be a similar size to the container above.


-Adhesive film with a transparent side and a mirror side


-Plexiglass

-Something to cut the plexiglass with

-Some sweet lights


-Glue

Steps:
(for the purpose of keeping it simple I'm going to assume the materials are the same ones I used that are listed above).

1. Cut out the bottom of the box (the part that doesn't lift up) so that the whole mirror (minus the edges) is visible when the box is open.
   
2. Glue the edges of the mirror to the edges of the box so that is firmly in place
   
3. Cut the plexiglass with the special plexiglass cutting tool so that it is exactly the same length and width as the top face of box. This step might be a little difficult as the plexiglass is kinda thick. I found that cutting it from either side and then 'snapping' it produced a nice clean break
   
4. Cut the adhesive film to the same length and width of the piece of plexigalss you just cut
   
5. On ONE side of the plexiglass, stick on the adhesive film so that it fully covers one side. Try and make it as smooth as possible without any air bubbles/wrinkles - think of it as putting on a screen protector on a phone
   
6. Cut a hole in the top of the box leaving around an inch on each side
   
7. Open the box up and using the glue, stick the piece of plexiglass to the underside of the top face using the inch margins on each side. NOT THAT THE FILM MIRROR SIDE OF THE PLEXIGLASS SHOULD FACE INWARDS TOWARD THE BOX)
   
8. With the box still open, stick the LED lights around the inside perimeter of the side of the box. There may be some excess length which is fine
   
9. Cut a hole in the side of the box large enough for any excess lights and the controller to fit through and then pull them thru so that they are on the outside of the box.
   
10. Close the box up and turn on the lights! The ones I recommended have a ton of different color, flashing and speed settings so you can create some pretty cool effects.

So long as your engraver is fully enclosed the only problem you might have is just the intensity of the visible spectrum. This is what we use at work. We just have it taped onto the engraver.

I see. Then I agree with the Q8 recommendation but I know you want it floody so what I'm thinking, what if you added a DC Fix (Sand) window film to the glass? It's self adhesive and should give a nice floody beam to the Q8. You could always purchase an additional lens so you can swap out between the two in case you'd ever need the light for other purposes.

Personally I DO live in a van, it's a 1992 Chevy G20 Gladiator. I have a memory foam mattress on top of a wooden platform, totes and cardboard boxes for storage (food, clothing, etc.) underneath. having the mattress off the floor gives space for storage, and also insulates the mattress from the heat or cold of the ground.

For privacy I have tinted windows, non-adhesive window film, collapsible foil sunshade for the front window, and black bug screen mesh like this for the side windows.

For water I use sturdy Arizona tea jugs. I have a basic Coleman camping toilet for nighttime and emergency uses - some people simply use pee bottles or five gallon buckets.

If it's cold at night I have a [12V electric blanket](https://www.walmart.com/ip/TREKSAFE-12-Volt-Heated-Travel-Blanket-White/54609929] and/or a 12V "car seat" warmer that I put under the mattress. I also have a propane Little Buddy heater which I have not yet used.

My main luxury item is an Alpicool C15 refrigerator powered by two 35AH "house batteries" (in parallel) which are charged using a Battery Doctor isolator. The Battery Doctor is run by my alternator when I drive-it only starts charging the house batteries after my van battery is full. The fridge uses 5.8AH per day. I used a cooler for a year, but the drawbacks are constantly buying or procuring ice (like from soda fountains), and food spoilage from it getting waterlogged, plus having to drain it frequently.

For hot meals, I use a 12 volt "lunchbox cooker" (works similar to a crock pot) which is powered in my cigarette lighter while I drive (or I can run it with the house batteries through a 12v splitter - the Alpicool is plugged into the other side. I also have a propane camping stove which I have never used.

I have a USB mini fan to run at night, or I can run my small regular fan through the 300W power inventor where I can also charge my laptop and/or phone (I usually charge the phone in the cigarette lighter).

I don't make any money if you buy from any of these links, but I only used them for illustrative purposes - I encourage you to shop around on Craigslist, eBay, Amazon, Walmart, check yard sales, etc. find the best priced similar item that works best for you. You don't have to get everything all at once - I didn't. But if you can get a basic minivan or van (seats removed), a mattress (or sleeping bag even) on a frame, and some jugs of water, it's a start.

True one way mirrors are expensive, but I think most people are using a piece of plain glass and then putting a good quality mirror film on it. With it being mounted on a wall and being dark on the backside and light on the front side, it will function just like a one-way mirror. I guess the trick is getting good film and applying it correctly to the glass.

To add to this, I would recommend non-adhesive frosted window film to cover instead of tape. I used this on my fish aquariums in the past, so it should work for your enclosure though I can't say from experience if it does (currently living vicariously through all of you since the fiance is iffy about reptiles). No harm in trying!

We got a roll of rabbitgoo film like this for our front windows next to the front door. Goes on easily with a spray bottle and an exacto knife to trim it.

I have an old house with small rooms and odd windows. I hate that window treatments add bulk and weight to a room so I bought the static window cling stuff below. It’s amazing - easy to use, temporary, impossible to see through, lets a ton of light in while blocking the heat from the sun. I have it in my kitchen, bathroom, and on my front door. Then maybe it would be best to try to obscure the window rather than the balcony. There are lots of ways to do that.

My wife and I had a similar problem; she hated being exposed but I didn't want to lose the natural light. What we found worked was to apply something like this to the glass:

... which gave us privacy while preserving natural light. Because we wanted to have some ability to see out, we didn't cover the entire window with it, just the center portion. It makes a nice effect, and it's easy to see out but still nearly impossible to see anything inside.

Use it with window film.

Ditch that dark corner shelf and get some nice over-toilet storage (one | two) that you can organize with baskets, bins, folded towels, etc. Weed out any bath products you're not using.

Replace the curtains with something more modern and light (one | two)! You could even just put some privacy film over the window so you don't lose any light. Add a hanging plant or lantern (to warm up the lighting) to the corner above the toilet, and a tall laundry basket or wastebasket next to the sink.

As others have mentioned, a rug is a great idea - they also make ones that fit around toilets (one | two).

Mirror film is what you need. I assume atleast some hardware store has that on stock.

It took three tries! I mixed a small amount of Dawn into a little mini spray bottle from the dollar store to apply it. It comes with a little razor knife and squeegee too. If you can afford it I would recommend buying a nice piece of two way tinted glass. This way definitely works tho for cheap!

Instead of hanging something, order some of the privacy paper (or mirrored) and put it on the inside of your windows. You can do it halfway up the windows if you don't want to totally cover them.

As far as this 'not seen from the street' business, I have to agree that I think you are misunderstanding what it means and your landlord probably misunderstood you when you asked about hanging curtains and assumed you would make holes in the walls.
Go outside and look at other apartments in your building. Or your neighbors buildings. Are their curtains or blinds? If yes, go put some in your apartment in a lightweight, sheer, but still concealing fabric with a tension rod and quit worrying so much.

I put up blackout tint on my car when I have to leave it unattended for a while. It removes easily with warm water and soap. Coupled with a dashboard shield and I've never had problems in UT, SC, or MO.

Second this. I found some really inexpensive contact vinyl that you can cut to fit your window and just use a squeegee to apply. Very simple and translucent enough to give you privacy. Some versions also refract light so it'll cast rainbows on your walls.

The other suggestions of cloth wrapped ice packs are worth trying, but I'd look at how to make the AC more efficient.

1. Can you move the cage closer to the AC? Even if the whole room is warmer, the area closest to the AC will be cooler.
   
   
2. If there's windows in the room, add window film to insulate and decrease heat coming it - it's cheap and easily removable if you rent (I rent and have them up). Just make sure it's non-adhesive, static cling film.    My boy starts looking uncomfortable over 76, so I would be very worried keeping him in temps of 80+. I shoot for 72 degrees and he seems comfortable plus or minus a few degrees of that.
   
   Refrigerated stone slabs do help for short term relief, but ultimately you need to keep the temp down. Chinchilla don't sweat, and can't release body heat that way. If you aren't comfortable in a long sleeve shirt or sweater in the room they're in, then it's too hot for the chins.

This is the best. Definitely a 5 star product in my book.

The plastic film for windows. There's a type that's removable, it comes in various shades and textures. Something like this might work for you.

Or you could just do the lower half of the window. That way you'd still get some unfiltered light in the room but still have privacy.

SC5w is an excellent choice. It doesn't get much better for a single AA, but it might not be much floodier than the LD20. A 10° hotspot is fairly tight, it's probably because of the smaller XPL2 emitter. They do have an SC5 with a frosted lens, although the LED is markedly inferior to the new version. Shoot who knows, maybe you can use some frosted window cling or something on the lens if it turns out to be too focused.

The Olight S1 Mini Baton and S1 Baton can run on both RCR123s or primaries. CW only unless you want to dish out extra for the titanium ones (S Mini [Similar to, but different than the S1 Mini])(S1 Baton) to get NW.

My recommendations are all single-cell compact lights, but if you're used to carrying a 2xAA light and have a budget of $100, there are tons of options, especially with 18650 lights that can use 123s as backup. 18650s and a charger will set you back ~$30-40, but $60 leaves MANY possibilities. Parametrek will probably roll up any second and plug the Wowtac A1S because it comes as a complete kit for $30, but it doesn't say it supports 2xCR123. It might, but it doesn't say officially. Might be too throwy.

Thrunite Neutron 2C is a total kit, but might also be too throwy.

Depending on whether it can accept the 6.0V from 2xCR123, a triple configuration in a Convoy S2+ would be super bright, total flood light.

I would suggest you move your bed from against the corner, I would turn it around and get a rug or runner to add some warmth to the place.
Plants are an inexpensive way to create a homey vibe and it add colour as well.
I would turn the ikea bookshelf on its side to give you more room to place things and give the illusion of length
For the kitchen/dining nook, keep it simple as its a small space. A fun runner could work here as well,keeping in mind cabinet colours. You can add a chalk board or anything interactive to the walls that you can change occasionally.

Yup! My older dog used to bark at quite a bit when we lived in an apartment, but we managed to get her to mostly stop (granted, she's not a hugely barky dog - she's more of the talkative type)

The first think you'll need to do is management when you're not directly training. This means covering up windows (something like this might be a good option) so your dog can't see what's going on outside, and a white noise machine or something (my best has been those super crappy box fans they sell during college student move in - the cheaper the better because you want loud!) to block sounds.

Now that you've got that done, then you start counter conditioning the behavior. A great method to use is outlined here. If your dog is barking at things that are sporadic and can't be replicated by you, it is more difficult, but be on the lookout to see if you can manage to train with those distractions. As for when it happens, I tend to then use negative punishment. If my dog barks inappropriately, they get a time out. I usually put them in the bathroom for about 10-20 seconds. More if they get super worked up and need to calm down. If once I let them out they bark again, they go back into the bathroom for another 10-20 seconds. Repeat ad-nauseum until they don't bark at the stimulus, and then reward heavily!

You cut the film to size, peel off the clear plastic backing (think peeling off the paper on a bandaid) spray down the window, stick it on, and squeegy out the bubbles

You're a bit late to the game for commissioned costumes. I'd recommend you make a circular base out of worbla or a different heat moldable plastic.

For the see through screen, there are plenty of options. A one way glass film, a clear sheet with chrome spray paint lightly sprayed over it, or a pre-made chrome sheet (make sure it's see thru).

Depends on the feel you want for the room, whether you want to be able to see the view through the doors and if you want to bring color or energy into the room with fabric. If it were me and I wasnt painting the walls in there, I would put matchstick blinds on the pair of windows - the glow of light through the wood is warm and bring some natural texture to the party, and it relates to the wood floor. If I wanted to be able to see the view I would probably put up a rod and do grommet curtain panels in a bold pattern on the doorwall that you can open and close. Navy and white would be on trend and go with your wood, and a bold large print pattern would liven up the whole wall. If you dont want to see the view but want light to come in I would go with window film. I bought this film off Amazon - Installed it on a west facing window. It helped reduce the heat in that bedroom a few degrees.
It went up "pretty" well - I screwed up trimming it, so there are a couple sections that aren't flush with the edge.

This stuff is non adhesive, it's basically a giant window cling that makes your window look frosted. So there's no risk of damaging the window at all. My neighbors balcony is so close to ours that they could see right into our apartment without trying. My husband and I put this all over our sliding doors. It's great.

I bought this for mine; using Plexi instead of glass. The effect works fine but it's very easy to get bubbles if you're not careful, and with Plexi if you screw up you basically have to start over (with glass you could peel, use acetone to clean and try again).

First things first, the best thing to do while he's training is to set him up for success by blocking his view. Put furniture in front of it, heavy curtains or blinds, or put this stuff directly on the glass. I recently covered my bedroom windows with that exact product because my cats were destroying my headboard and curtains getting up there to look at birdies all the time, works great and super easy to install. Cheap too. Bonus, if you rent, it peels right off if you move.

Once you block his view, the problem may fix itself. You don't have to block the whole window, just the parts he can get to and see out of.

If he's still barking at the shadows or sounds of people walking by, work on redirection. I'm sure you've tried calling him away, but make it really worth his while. Barking at passersby is very self rewarding. They are near, he barks, and they go away. To him, barking works. You have to show him that another option is the more rewarding one. Try his favorite treats. If that doesn't work, physically move him to a spot he can't see out(gently please), while saying some sort of "off" command(use whatever you want, say banana, it doesn't matter)and once you get him away, give him a treat for calming down. Do a lot of practice of saying your command when no one is there. Then practice with another person(you said we so I'll assume spouse/roommate/whatever). Have them go outside and practice your "come to me and calm" command. Once he realizes that he gets treats for leaving that spot, he'll pick you over it.

Alternatively, you can teach a "place" command(again, you can say "bed" or whatever you want)by luring him to his "place" and rewarding him for going. This can be practiced 100x a day with or without someone walking by. Use high value treats mixed with something a little less high value, keep the order random. Eventually, he'll go to his "place" every time, hoping this time is the time he gets the big deal treat. Then you can phase out getting treats every time to getting treats sometimes and praise sometimes. Again, keep it random.

The whole goal, no matter what method you choose, is to make listening to your command way more rewarding than barking. Make a big deal when he succeeds, he just did the best thing ever! Dogs are opportunists, once they get the hang of it, they'll choose the better reward every single time.

This stuff is great for this kind of situation. I have a similar issue with one of our bathrooms. It also keeps the room a lot cooler in summer.
