So this is what I'm doing:

My wife picked out a wine fridge (similar to this) for me as a Christmas present. The racks in mine were stainless steel, so I kept one on the very top shelf and have the rest on hold for future uses.

I also picked out an Inkbird temperature controller and humidity controller. The fridge is plugged into the temperature controller as well as a carboy wrap heater. The heater is taped to reflectix that I cut to size and taped to the door (blocking light) with aluminium tape. This way when the chamber needs to be warmed up, there is even gentle heat radiating from across the whole door AND the light from the exterior is blocked.

I need to pick up a better humidifier, as the one I choose doesn't like it when the power cuts off using the Inkbird Humidity controller. So I need to get one that will start back up when the sensor kicks power back on to the outlet. Something small will work. The wine fridge I have has a fan built in and that kicks on when the fridge cools itself off from the heater (also, checking the meat on a semi-regular basis with opening the door keeps the airflow moving). I'll be buying some stainless S hooks to hang my curing meat on. Until that time, I'm just using binder clips and excess string from the trussing.

I can upload pictures later this evening.

Before you pull the trigger, Amazon has it for less $554 vs. $498

u/---YNWA--- · 5 pointsr/cigars

For the same money you could just get one of these.

What we did was buy a wine cooler from Goodwill. Something like this. It is the type that has the temperature controls on the front. Wine doesn't get stored at as low of temperatures as a regular fridge, so it works well for cheese if you can set the temp. If you live in a dry area, put a cup of water in the bottom of the cooler. Also, since it comes with metal racks for shelves, I just cut new shelves out of plywood and oiled them up to prevent mold and other nasty things.

I remain skeptical of the smaller free standing wine fridges. The cheap ones ain't good and the good ones ain't cheap. The literature with most even says that they are not for longterm wine storage. Some of the lowend thermo-electric ones seek to solve the vibration issue present with conventional mechanical compressors by instead using a cheap Peltier device of a quality similar to what's found in a 12vdc plug in thermo-electric Coleman picnic cooler. At the low end, faulty electronics is a frequent customer complaint.

I'm also skeptical of some wine industry entities that push these things. Nevermind the "pro" reviews; look to the voluntary non-compensated consumer reviews on Amazon. A good case in point are the reviews on the Wine Enthusiast wine coolers. And their micro Eurocave gets trashed, too Even the supposedly "award winning" New Air gets horrible customer reviews.

Then there's the whole issue of whether the wine fridges in this category will allow for upright storage of an opened bottle, will accomodate all different sizes and shapes of bottles from 375ml to at least 1.5ml and from tall and skinny to short and round. And for the price and energy consumption of some of the better mechanically refrigerated ones you may as well buy a full sized refrigerator.

One wine store manager told me that they had wanted to offer some of the higher end wine fridges as a convience to their customers, but even with fridges in the $400-$1200 range they were having enough warranty issues that they decided that they were better off just selling wine not appliances.

Are those inside dimensions or outside dimensions? Assuming the former, 5.5 cu ft isn't really going to comfortably fit 4 fresh hams I think. My DIY chamber is 3.3 cu ft and would probably only fit a single ham, if it could fit one at all. Honestly, if all I can do is fit 4 hams into this fridge, and not have more room to cure anything else, I wouldn't get a $1200 mini fridge. I'd be looking for a 6' sliding door fridge where I can hang some sausages, whole muscles and maybe a few hams if I squeeze in everything real tight.

u/poprockcide · 3 pointsr/cigars

How long is the trip? I live in a hot dry area so I bought a thermo electric wine refrigerator that doesn't create moisture for $180. A regular refrigerator has its own moisture that I don't think is what you want cigars at but I'm not %100 on that. Out of your two options I'd go with the dark closet. If you're going away for weeks or months I'd spring for a small thermo electric fridge. Put in some boveda packs or heartfelt beads and you're good to go.

u/I_Am_TheSnuggler · 3 pointsr/DIY

Build a mini fridge?? I dont think that is very feasible. Judging from the picture amd no dimensions, i would say your best bet is to get a skinny wine fridge to fit in there, which will be great for those bombers i see. Something like this http://www.amazon.com/AVANTI-12-BOTTLE-WINE-COOLER/dp/B004SUXZ5U/ref=pd_ts_zgc_hg_3741541_2/182-8455648-6084822?_encoding=UTF8&s=home-garden&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=right-2&pf_rd_r=1VX0ZSRF8SQQYPRVB27E&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_p=1768815802&pf_rd_i=1000882201

Whynter even makes a unit they say is expressly for that purpose: https://www.amazon.com/Whynter-CWC-351DD-Freestanding-Humidor-Stainless/dp/B01B78IJTM

I can't speak to how it works, however. I stumbled upon it the other day while trying to decide what wineador I was going to get for myself.

u/hazarrr · 2 pointsr/wine

I've found the Ivation wine fridges available on Amazon to be good. I have a 24 bottle fridge that also bumps up the humidity by about 5% from the outside world in the winter, which is good for medium-long term aging, though based on your comment, you may not be looking for a fridge for the purposes of aging.

u/5ERGlO · 2 pointsr/Snus

Not yet, but this is one of the first things that will go in my home office.

u/dilligaffff · 2 pointsr/cigars

Correct, just for reds. I think it would look nice and add some more usefulness. The acrylic shelves are an idea. I was hoping to be able to use a couple shelves from the newair aw-281 winecooler which looks to be the same unit but sold as a wine cooler.

u/steampunkjesus · 2 pointsr/beerporn

Do yourself a favor and pick up a wine fridge like [this] (http://www.amazon.com/NewAir-AW-180E-Bottle-Thermoelectric-Cooler/dp/B001DEQJXE/ref=sr_1_12?s=appliances&ie=UTF8&qid=1370439140&sr=1-12&keywords=wine+cooler). The temp controls make it perfect for aging things, and since you have a dedicated space for beer, you won't take up as much room.

u/sms575 · 2 pointsr/malelivingspace

Second this. Any of those bottles that you aren't going to drink in the next few months would do well with storage with stable temperatures and humidity, especially in Boston. There are a lot of smaller units that could go well with your aesthetic. I linked below the one I use, not a huge amount of space, but looks nice, has wood shelves, and a nice look to it.

Non-mobile link to the link in the OP: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007PKOMWU/

Also, in response, as someone without any personal experience in the matter, that cooler looks good. Decent low price, decent high rating, high capacity. If you get it, let me know how it is. I might want something like that soon :)

u/BeheadingRoyalty · 2 pointsr/cubancigars

I feel you on that. Whynter actually makes a wine and cigar unit lol.

I've had this little Haier 6 bottle for 3 years and it's been great; nice and quiet; the 12 bottle ones should be pretty good for what you're looking for.

u/stupac2 · 2 pointsr/beerporn

Funny, I love beer so my fridge has almost no room for food.

I have a wine fridge, got it from amazon, but apparently they don't sell it any more (http://www.amazon.com/Haier-Bottle-Dual-Zone-Cellar/dp/B004FHAGNK). Fits 45 bottles, 16 bombers/750's upright in the bottom, 4 more on their side in the top, and 25 12's upright on that divider. Anyway, it works pretty well, it's nice having bottles at the right aging/serving temperature.

u/jnthnrch · 1 pointr/Charcuterie

I think this is the one I have. Was a bit cheaper when I bought it:

https://www.amazon.com/NutriChef-Thermoelectric-Freestanding-Refrigerator-Operation/dp/B06XY75SBW/ref=sr_1_9?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1526691723&sr=1-9&keywords=wine+fridge

If it's full (~10kg), I have a lot of problems with humidity so I prop the door open a bit, and keep a pan of salt in the bottom. I have to wipe it down every few days right after I hang something new because of the condensation.

Hopefully I'll graduate to a real chamber sometime this year.

u/h4ndic4pd · 1 pointr/cigars

have you thought about an electric cigar cooler? Those or a newair wine fridge which you can convert would be your best storage solutions.

Does he for sure only want a traditional humidor?

Avanti 12 Bottle Thermoelectric Counter Top Wine Cooler - Model EWC1201
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004SUXZ5U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_9XPTzbYPK83Z4

Per someone else's suggestion after doing some research, took out the bottom rack. Works great for stouts and things I don't want too cold, rest goes in the fridge.

u/GMendelent · 1 pointr/microgrowery

I wouldn't freeze it as this causes the trichs to fall off. I personally use a wine cooler my parents use to have. They needed a larger one, and I asked for the smaller. I keep it at 55-60 degrees. It works prime for curing as well. Now that I think about it, that little fridge is pretty damn important to me. I never thought about it really until now. I keep a few bottles of wine and some johnny in there as well. Here's a link. http://www.amazon.com/NewAir-AW281E-Bottle-Thermoelectric-Cooler/dp/B002ZV0OJO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1404271265&sr=8-3&keywords=wine+cooler

u/MactheDog · 1 pointr/cigars

I know this is a bit off topic, but have you considered a Wineador?

With some cedar shelves and drawers, they look extremely nice and this guy would be able to hold a ton of smokes.

u/dilespla · 1 pointr/cigars

I got this, and 3 of these. It's currently holding about ~120 sticks.

It's big enough to hold your whole humidor, or you can do like I did, and turn it into the humidor, you know, for space and such.

u/ecartes · 1 pointr/wine

This is the one I've been planning on getting for a while.

My opinion is this: why waste money on a wine rack if this is your ultimate goal? Buy the damn thing already!

u/idosay · 1 pointr/cigars

I put my wineador together for a little under $200.

Kalamera Wine Fridge $109

Spanish Cedar Trays x4 $60

You can either go with Boveda packs or beads with this setup. I already had the beads from my humidor so I was already set. You'll probably want to get a hygrometer as well, probably another $23 for a caliber IV.

I took a chance on this wine fridge. The new air ones are way out of my price range. Also becareful of the amazon trays because sometimes they come with mold.

Edit: LOL I'm bad at math

u/blakeleywood · 1 pointr/beer

FWIW, this is the "cellar" I have, and I've had no issues with it. All the shelves are removable, and the entire bottom shelves are one single piece. I have that removed and only keep four beers on their sides.

u/corse · 1 pointr/cigars

Apologies, I referenced the incorrect cooler and feel like a tard. I meant 180E, not 281E. However, it was $210 shipped on Amazon. The 281E is $259 shipped, which is not much more.

u/Realbigdish · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

I found this guy pretty local Haier 8 Bottle Wine Fridge. I think I'll check this out. Thanks

u/havens8583 · 1 pointr/wine

Best to not have any change in temp (or very little) and it shouldn't be anywhere near the teens(F).

I recently did a wine-a-dor and wanted to not spend a ton of money. I ended up getting it done for about 200 bucks. I bought this wine cooler
from Amazon and used Prime shipping for free.

I bought these shelves from Amazon, just cheap generic stuff.

Along with a hygrometer and some Cigar Mechanic beads and I love it. Would do it again in an instant. I can fit about 150 sticks in this guy and love the ease of use.

This thing would make an absolutely terrible ferm chamber.

u/rjzzz · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

For fermentation chambers, I always just see discussion about getting a chest freezer and doing a bunch of work on it to add temperature control. Why not just buy something like this and rip out the shelves?
