It might be Generous Death, by Nancy Pickard.

>As director of the Port Frederick Civic Foundation, Jenny Cain is privy to the charitable intentions of the town's wealthiest citizens. There's eccentric old Arnie Culverson, who's promised millions to the local art museum. Who's found there one bright winter morning, neatly tucked into a priceless antique Chinese bed. With pillow and blanket. Dead. Then another dearly beloved donor dies in the night. And the killer leaves behind a nasty rhyme suggesting rich and beautiful Jenny will be next!

America is Not the Heart appears to be a translated book, which could back up PP's claims that other languages uses it differently than we do in the US. Looking at the "Look Inside!" feature on Amazon shows there's no quotation marks.

Asymmetry does appear to have quotation marks. Do I have the incorrect version?

Yes, James Joyce used hyphens. James Joyce was also a tool that did it out of spite and because he felt that using the "theater style" made him feel superior.

Nora Roberts has a great series of books about 4 childhood best friends who run an all-in-one wedding business together. In each of the 4 books, the girls fall in love. It's the Bride Quartet series:

Vision in White
Bed of Roses
Savor the Moment
Happily Ever After

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Kushiel's Legacy series. It's set in an alternate history France (called Terre d'Ange) and it's primarily about a courtesan/spy who also derives pleasure from pain. There's lots of BDSM in it, so it may not be your cup of tea, but it's a great series.

If you'd rather go for something more light, try Men in Kilts or The Corset Diaries by Katie McAlister. I'm not one for purely romance genre, but I read this one several years ago and liked it.

I'm procrastinating at work, so here are some contemporaries that were light fun reads that I was able to find at my local Half-Price Books store.

Stately Pursuites by Katie Fforde It's set in England and has the chick helping renovate and bring life back into an old manner house.

Jill Shavis has a couple good contemporary series.

Julie James writes a lot of contemporary series that have a legal leaning to them, but she actually was a lawyer and so the details are better than in a lot of other legal contemporaries.

Maya Banks is good if you are wanting more smutty books that are actually well written and not the drivel that 50 Shades was.

Nora Roberts Gallaghers triology set in Ireland was a classic Nora but was a fun quick read in the way she does so well.

Quite welcome! Nora Roberts is I think technically considered romance (suspense thriller? romantic thriller?), but they're not the bodice ripping Harlequin type -- they're what we used to read before "paranormal ass-kicking female lead urban fantasy romances" were a thing. Similar authors are Sandra Brown and Catherine Coulter; if you google any of the three and "FBI" or "police officer" you can find books by them with a mystery bent. Sorry I can't recommend a specific book but they're kind of popcorn reading and it's been a while. But maybe these will lead your group to an appreciation for mysteries in general that you can nurture. Especially since a lot of cozies have romances!

Just to add to that last edit from yesterday, I'm thinking of picking up Twenties Girl by Kinsella -- it looks pretty adorable and the reviews are great.

Also, the one I read by Evanovich was One for the Money. I thought it was pretty decent -- kind of like Grafton but breezier. I should really finish that series one of these days to see if it gets deeper.

I've never been big on romances either (I'm a fellow mystery and fantasy buff) but my sister would occasionally leave them lying around and you know how it is!

And now I'm vaguely uncomfortable with knowing that....

Into the Water by Paula Hawkins has a lot of water within the imagery, descriptions, and overall theme but warning that it has to due with a lot of murders / suicides / drowning if that's not the type of book you're looking for.
