Did you know that if you have one of those leather ligatures with the one twisty tighteny thing, you can balance it on your stand or finger by that one tightener thingy and it’s a great way to scare directors, section leaders, techs, and generally anyone.

At this stage in your career, it won't really affect the sound much. But if you find that it's slipping and hard to make comfortable, I highly recommend the Luyben ligature. It's only $12, and a seriously fantastic piece of equipment.

Welcome back to clarinet! In terms of clarinets, I really think you should just see what you can get for your budget and seriousness of returning to clarinet. You definitely don't need to drop $5k on a new Buffet if you're just looking at getting your toes wet again, so look on used sites for some clarinets.

As for reeds, since you haven't played in a while, the muscles that form your embouchure aren't as strong as they used to be, so start out with maybe a 2.5 Vandoren blue box reed , or 3 Vandoren V12 reed. Since you played for 8 years previously, I think you won't take long to get those muscles back up to strength so you can use stronger reeds that you likely were using. In my experience the V12s play a little softer compared to the blue box reeds, so it might be a good stiffness for you. If you're just looking into getting back into playing, check out the Yamaha 4C mouthpiece (I find that many students actually play pretty well with it) and maybe a simple ligature.

I'm always hesitant to give gear advice, so that's just my two cents. If anyone else has anything to add or change, please do!

Again, welcome back to clarinet!

Rovner light (L4, L5), vandoren optimum and reserve "H". I use this Rovner Accordion Accessory (L5) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000A82MCG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_V8U0DbY4JVA15 and have never had a problem

Accidents can be the result of negligence. Your friend should offer to pay. In any case, you can't "make" someone pay unless you take legal action. But you can ask that they pay. However, the best selling Clarinet Ligature on Amazon is just $21.55. (unless you want the one that costs $210). How much is your friendship worth?

Glass-bottom reed holder like this one. Let them dry flat. Really most sincerely flat.

Wait until you have some more money together. Also, I would recomend skipping the intermidiate horn all together and getting a nice pro horn, which you can do for $2-3K. With the money you have, I would make sure my setup is right where I want it. Get a nice mouthpiece and ligature. My own personal setup is a [Vandoren AL4] (https://www.amazon.com/Vandoren-SM712-Optimum-Saxophone-Mouthpiece/dp/B0002D0KRI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1524487193&sr=8-1&keywords=vandoren+al4+alto+sax+mouthpiece&dpID=313nUwDr2YL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch) mouthpiece and a [Vandoren Series] (https://www.amazon.com/Vandoren-LC57DP-Ligature-Plastic-Saxophone/dp/B00534392Y/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1524487263&sr=1-2&keywords=vandoren+optimum+ligature+alto+sax) Ligature. Son of a @@#$@@# I assumed the larger end of the ligature was down, and the smaller was up because of the taper. I just checked the product photo of my ligature, and it shows the larger end is UP. I've been playing it upside down. LOL. Boy do I feel like an idiot.

However, I've flipped it around and I remembered why I didn't do it like this, it doesn't fit very well, the two metal pegs stick up (which they do in the stock photo too) I assumed it was wrong because it fits much closer to the shape of the mouth piece with the wider part of the ligature facing down the instrument instead of up towards the reed tip. https://imgur.com/a/Loco6

I've been a huge fan of Rovners but thought the dark wasn't as nice for solo work. Might want to look at something like the Rovner C3RL Mark III Ligature for your price range. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000A87OJ2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_LKgSAbS1565CK

A mouthpiece that's highly regarded among alto players is the Morgan Excalibur. Rovner is the lig that's pretty affordable and would be much better than what comes with the horn. Reeds can be whatever you're used to but I've found it's easier to play on Van Doren Java or ZZ reeds.

As for playing, make sure your embouchure is proper. What I mean by this is that a proper embouchure of a clarinet player, as you would know, is making your mouth in the same shape as if you were saying "eeeeeee". Sax should have an "oh" mouth shape when played. I only know this because when I was in college my sax instructor would keep telling me things that are different from clarinet and sax as she was a clarinet player primarily.

Edit: It's spelled embouchure. Also, why the downvotes?
