On my 360 I use the keyboard controller attachment to input the codes. I do it just because it's faster and easier. I've never done any of those first come, first serve codes. I don't think they are even on 'old-gen'.

[EDIT] Sorry for the big wall of text. Maximum compression of content: No real disadvantages. if you're EU, we can meet in game. I can try send you my steam controller config and give you my GW2 settings in game.

Oh sorry, wasn't @ home this weekend. Sorry for the late answer.

Yes, of course I still have a kb around for typing / chatting (but only because that chatpad AddOn for the controller doesn't work on PC for some reason! D: )

I also still have a mous near me, because I for sure need it to controll my PC while not in game. And I sometimes use it to win at inventory wars. It's faster and more comfortable to fix a big cluttered inventory and for longer crafting sessions at the crafting stations. But for quick fixing while running in a zerg, I use gamepad.

Placing AoE skills in fight isn't rly hard with gamepad & activated action cam. If you've ever played a shooter with a gamepad you'll be able to aim that AoE's. If you want to play a heavy ground targetted class, like condi necro with staff, there's an additional option to lock ground targetted skills on your target. This way you'll cast ground targetted skills directly on top of your target without having to aim at all.

I'm mainly playing Warrior (PvE, WvW - zerg and roaming), Revenant (WvW - zerg and roaming) and Guardian (Fractals - only T2, but working on it). If you'd face me in wvw roaming I'd definitly be one of the better players you'd fight against. There's rly no real disadvantage for pure PvE and only veeeeeeeeeeeery minimal for PvP:

  • Having to aim ground targetted skills, which is slightly harder than with MK. But this only rly affect you, with skills that need to be casted very quick and very precise. For example there are possible trick stomps with thief against thiefs downed escape, using Shadow step to TP on top of them after they use their downed skill 2 to get away from your stomp. You also have it harder to cast skills uphill on top of a plateau. If the terrain step is too high, you struggle to place it correctly. But this is again not gamepad related, but an issue of action cam (but with gamepad controlls you rly rly want to use that action cam). This issue is not THAT rare, but usually only occures at situations where you don't have any preasure anyways.
  • Revenant-Shiro phase traversal can't be cast on targets out of range, while in action cam, for some reason. For this issue I added a button to my "menu controlls-layer". I'd switch into these controlls, push button and swapp back to combat controlls for it to work. This also isn't rly a weakness of gamepad, but a disadvantage of using action cam. (I did report this as a bugg, because this is definitly not how Anet want it to work)

But on the other hand, I've figured some rly funny interactions, that may offer advantages in combat! ;)

You can make some sort of "zig-zag" leaps if you have action cam active and disabled autotargetting. Using a leap skill like Bulls Charge or Warrior GS skill 5, will give you the option to run into a "wrong direction" (no target locked) and then make a quick turn by locking on your target mid rush. Looks super goofy and maybe kinda unintended, but I had people go like "W.T.F." when I "run away" from them and then make a quick 180 back and hitt them in the face. Or dodging an AoE by running sideways and turn on them mid dash.

    ------------

Keep in mind GW2 has an exceptional amount of controll options in game. You can - if you want to - turn ranged DPS classes into a shooter like gameplay, by turning off auto targetting & turning on action cam. You can also enable first person for cam = FPS. Or you can reposition the cam slightly to left / right = 3rd person "over the shoulder"-shooter. Enabling action cam in generall turns GW2 into a console game expierience. Turning it off will change it more into a MOBA (but with cam locked on your hero).

    ------------

If you're EU, we can also meet up in game if you want to. I can show you, that I'm not crippled by playing with a gamepad and we could chatt in real time. Would also make it easier to explain you all the GW2 settings I use and how I configurated the controlls in game. And maybe we can figure out how I can send you my controller config in steam.
