I spent way too much time on this, but let's see how your claim plays out.

2. Akai MPK249 $400
2. Yamaha P71 $415
3. 21.5 inch iMac $1100 (although this is the base model, probably a good estimate)
3. Edifier R1280T Near Field Monitors $99
5. Asus 24" monitor $130x5=$650
4. Logitech G27 I'm going to say around $300, even though Amazon has it listed for nearly $1000. Seems like the MSRP a few years ago was $300-$400.

  1. Logitech G Saitek X52 Flight Control System $150
  2. Logitech C600 $30
  3. Opolar F401 $12
  4. Logitech G610 $90, although some versions on amazon are closer to $60
  5. (I couldn't figure out what the other keyboard is, but it's probably junk that the OP didn't spend a lot of money on.)
  6. Logitech Z623 $100 (I think these are right)
  7. HTC Vive $500
  8. Logitech Z-2300 $180 MSRP, I'm fairly certain that I'm wrong about this one though
  9. Wireless Xbox Controller $42

Add in like $1000 for each desk and $2000 for each computer we don't see (assuming there are two), that gets us to a total of $11,068.

There is a laptop bag stashed on the left side of the frame, so maybe it's a $9000 laptop.

Pssh, that's nothing I'm a small indie developer and I just created my first game. You can buy it right here. http://www.amazon.com/The-Elder-Scrolls-Skyrim-Xbox-360/dp/B004HYK956

Not really for D-pad reliant games, though. Despite having the best overall controller, the 360's D-pad is a mushy POS. For modern games that focus on analog sticks, a 360 controller is perfect, but for older games that rely on a D-pad I use an SNES controller with one of these.

EDIT: MS did release a pro controller with a twist-out better D-pad, but it is $50 separately and can't really be considered the official 360 controller when it's not packed in with the system.

I have some great news then, because you can play that and the DLC for just $14 right now and Rockstar can put their resources toward something we don't already have!

u/BitWarrior · 36 pointsr/battlefield_4

I feel that you've presented a very one-sided argument here. I'd like to attempt to address what you've responded with, in addition to adding some more flavor and perspectives.

Online Capabilities
Absolutely, the new PS4 will indeed require PSPlus, and it will cost $50 per year. That's a fact, but we'll get to how that impacts the user in other ways outside of its immediate financial cost at the next point.

Games
You've said that 95% of console games are released at $60. This is true. It is also true that 95% of PC games are released at $60. I have no idea why you wouldn't outline that. You immediately mention PC games go on sale, but so do console games. Heck, let's consider Bioshock Infinite, probably one of the most recently released AAA games. You can pick it up today on Amazon, brand new, for $40, but on Steam it's still $60. Console games always drop in price fairly notably only a few months after release. Bioshock Infinite will be likely $30 in about a month.

Which brings me to my next point, your $120 a year example. If you feel utterly compelled to buy a game at release for either a PC or a console, you're going to only buy 2 games in that year. You make some strange points regarding sales later on that is barely comprehensible, but allow me to outline a very important point. In that year, in which you're paying $50 for PSPlus and $120 for 2 games (if you're an idiot) or 4 games if you wait a few months for that $30 price point, you're also going to get a metric shit ton of games coming in from PSPlus. There's a great comment about it here, but suffice to say, in that one year time a PC and console would have those 2 games (at $60 apiece), but the console would also have:

  • Super Street Fighter IV
  • Little Big Planet 2
  • Demon’s Souls
  • BioShock 2
  • Vanquish
  • Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition
  • Sleeping Dogs
  • Borderlands
  • inFAMOUS 2
  • Just Cause 2
  • Darksiders
  • Saints Row 2
  • Spec Ops: The Line
  • King of Fighters XIII
  • Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One
  • Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

...in addition to a ton of smaller indie games. As a matter of fact, that list is 1 month old (gasp!). We should add to that list:

  • Saints Row The Third
  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown
  • Uncharted 3
  • LittleBigPlanet Karting
  • Deus Ex

...and again more indie games. Oh, and if you have a PSVita, you'd have a bunch more free games.

So that's a huge point I wanted to wrap up into the $50 a year argument, in addition to the cost of games argument.

And finally, cost of parts. You really failed to outline the TCO of a PC. You imagined a 7 year example, and there's no way in hell you're going to buy a "budget PC" that will be adequately playing AAA games 7 years into the future. You're either going to have to dramatically turn down every setting you can find, or the game just isn't going to work. The gaming rigs you need to make today to keep up with all the pretty graphics have a lifespan of about 2 years, 4 years if you really invested heavily early on. In the lifespan of that 7 year window, you're absolutely going to need to purchase 2 PC's, whereas you could sit pretty on the one console without any additional increase in costs.

    Parts
I hate to say this, but anyone who compares a console's components directly in line with a PC's components simply does not understand what they're talking about. There's a huge difference writing code against a machine that could basically have anything, versus a known platform, in addition to the huge benefits you gain from being able to write against the metal and having no layers of costly abstraction, in addition to the lack of an OS and/or background tasks getting in the way. This is an age old battle, but being both a PC gamer and PS3 owner, I can say with a lot of confidence there's no way you could get something like Killzone 3, Uncharted 2 or 3, The Last of Us, Beyond Two Souls or God of War 3 to run on a GeForce 7800 with the same quality and framerate, which the PS3 is based on.

Console hardware goes a long way, far more than its PC counterpart. I have to upgrade my PC regularly to keep up with the games I want to play on it, but my PS3 stays there without investing a dime into it.

    Other Important Considerations
You missed a ton of very important things to consider, both pro and con, for each platform.

    | PS4 | PC |
    |:----|:-----|
    |Locked platform. Other players will not gain an advantage because they have a more powerful rig than you, granting them higher resolution, a larger field of view, or smoother framerates.|Unlocked platform. Players with a more powerful machine, multiple monitors, etc, will have an advantage over you. It adds an element of hardware into the mix, not just skill. |
    |No hacking. There are just no hacks for the PS3 for Battlefield 3. It simply doesn't happen. You can enjoy a completely hack-free environment.| Lots of hacking. Huge number of hacks out there, gets really annoying really quickly. Hope an admin is online. Hackers make my blood boil. |
    |No DRM. Console games just don't have DRM. There's nothing to install, the system takes care of that. | DRM. Gotta install Origin. DRM running in the background, stealing your CPUs. Personally I hate this shit. |
    | Controller. You'll get used to it, but a mouse is always going to be the superior aiming device. Been playing with a controller for years and I still get frustrated with my lack of precision with it sometimes. On the flip side, however, flying is way fucking better with a controller. | Mouse. The way aiming was meant to be. Flying is really weird with it though, you may want to get a controller for when you pop into a jet/heli, or get a real joystick, throttle and shit (extra points for style, but more $$$). Huge potential to look like a super-nerd here. |

Mouse: Logictech G502. It is widely considered to be the "best" mouse for PC enthusiasts.

Keyboard: Will heavily depend on your preferences, but I have a DASKeyboard 4 Ultimate with Cherry MX Blues (tactile click). I have also heard nice things about the Corsair K70, and Strafe. If you are new to mechanical keyboards, I would recommend checking out the subreddit /r/mechanicalkeyboards for more information.

Headset: I just use an old set of Turtle Beach X12s I've had forever, because I usually just use my soundbar, but a buddy of mine prefers to use a desk mic and some Audio-Technica headphones.

EDIT: Saw your budget in the other comments. You should probably go with the Strafe for your keyboard. Most others below $100 aren't as high of quality. Personally, I think you should get the Strafe, the G502, and the headphones/mic combo.

Also, look into getting a 12 month subscription of Xbox Gold (or maybe 3 or 6 months depending on your financial situation). Right now Microsoft is giving away 2 games for gold subscribers a month. Right now we can download Assassin's Creed 2 for free. You can usually find a 12 month subscription for $35 if you scour the internet hard enough.

And not mods (well, you may be able to mod it depending on the model; some are easier than others), but if you sign up for bing rewards, you can earn free Microsoft points. I've cashed out over $100 since the start of the year. I pretty much don't have to buy games any more.

u/Canna_bus · 13 pointsr/truegaming

I've definitely seen this as well, and find myself agreeing with pretty much everything you said. I had a friend Gabe who when talking about a new game, the first thing he'd always comment on was its appearance. "Woah dawg, those graphics look sick!" While me and my other friend would wait till we actually played the thing and 7 times out of 10 the thing sucked. He bought these games without researching like OP originally, and eventually he learned as well, but it took him a bit longer and he'll still play something that looks super flashy to this day.

I can't help but get suckered in as well when a big title that I heavily enjoyed as a kid drops. Most recent example of this being RE6. I picked it up at midnight release and was super stoked that my SO wanted to play it with me coop.

First, the lack of customization completely pissed us off, it's like they extremely downgraded from RE4/5 and somehow thought they were improving the system by getting rid of all gun customization and instead having a small pool of about 20 perks you can choose 3 from to equip. (Speaking of perks, they seem to be a growing trend as well... they used to just be limited to RPGs if I'm not mistaken.) RE6's level design was pretty bad, 90% of the time it's go from point a to point b. There's tons of rooms in the game that are just for you to gawk at and pass through, zero interaction, just serving the purpose of simply being there and looking shiny. And shiny it is, RE6 is the best looking RE made so far, yet what's the point of all this awesome graphics when you can't do anything with it?

We beat the 3 main campaigns because we wanted our money's worth, and after we checked online we saw capcom say they'd release coop in a free patch (GGCapcom) to ada wong's campaign so that you didn't have to go through all 3 main campaigns cooperatively and then get to the final one and have to play single player. Awesome. But months later, we realized we gave even less shits than ever. We started it up, played one chapter, SO got mad at me for not sticking together, and we kinda just looked at eachother and realized this wasn't really fun. Haven't touched it since. The lasting appeal isn't there. What images of it left in my brain are basically just explosions, slick graphics, and overly cheesy cutscenes. None of this draws me back in.

Interesting note to end on here, RE6 came out on october 2nd, 2012, while skyrim came out november 11th, 2011.

RE6 is going for 19 bucks

Skyrim is still like pretty much 40 bucks

what's funny is that it's currently $39.95 on the xbox.

u/StarfighterProx · 12 pointsr/xbox

That's a VERY disappointing price on Bioshock Infinite. Both Amazon and Best Buy already have the physical copy for the same price with free shipping.

Dunno why you'd pay $24 for a converter when you can just pay $32 plus shipping for a new wired one that you can also use on the 360: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wired-Controller-Black/dp/B003ZSN600

Afterglow Controllers

My roommates and I each own one for our rigs, they are the same shape and contours and are technically a Microsoft brand. Also they have a toggle light-up feature. $25 at Target

u/zackogenic · 10 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Wireless controller, $40 bucks on amazon.

u/pansensuppe · 10 pointsr/PS4

While the Xbox One controller is a great evolution to the 360 controller, the PS4 controller is a real revolution if you compare it with the DS3. It feels so great in your hand. The size is perfect and the buttons and the D-Pad are by far the best compared to any other controller. The new surface feels really good, especially with sweaty hands like mine. Even the triggers are now better than the ones on the Xbox One controller (despite the nice rumble feature).

There is only one thing where the Xbox One controller is still superior and that are those great new thumbsticks with the slip-proof rim. But guess what... you can replace the PS4 with those original X1 sticks pretty easily http://www.amazon.com/Original-XBOX-ONE-Controller-analogue-Thumbsticks/dp/B00IZSTNKW or even get some fancy 3rd party plastic or metal sticks in any color http://www.gadgettidings.com/product/custom-metal-dark-grey-thumbsticks-analogue-thumb-sticks-for-sony-dual-shock-4-ps4-controllers/ for a couple bucks to create the ultimate controller: DS4 with X1-sticks!

The 360 has a new D-pad for it's silver version: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Silver-Controller-Play-Charge/dp/B0041HROGG

It's VERY nice. It has a strong click when you press the directions.

u/AlienHooker · 9 pointsr/fnv

I mean, Amazon has it right now for 12 bucks. Amazon's not exactly a shady place either. But hey, it's your money, spend it however you want. I would recommend "Old World Blues" if you're dead set on downloading one right now through the marketplace.

u/samcuu · 9 pointsr/buildapc

It's much better, but also more expensive. If you are willing to expand your budget that much, go for it.

Here's one I put together. Still bigger than your budget, but not as much.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/jNjp9W

No need for a CPU cooler, the stock one will work just fine. Cheaper RAM, cheaper GPU (that would still be able to play those games).

Also the controller like in the Alienware link isn't $150. Amazon has it for $35.

u/No1s_On_Meth · 8 pointsr/Rockband
u/areyougame · 8 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Edit: $20.80 new on Amazon US for MGS 2, 3 and Peace Walker.

I'll paste what I've posted in a similar thread about this:

I'd recommend the Alesis Nitro Kit:

https://www.amazon.com/Alesis-Nitro-Kit-Electronic-Cymbals/dp/B0187KO8X4

I purchased this about two months ago and have been using it in RB3 in preparation for RB4, and couldn't be happier with it in terms of sensitivity, accuracy, feel, etc.

To get it to work in RB4, you'll need:

A MIDI cable (connects drum kit to MIDI adapter): ~$6

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000068NTU

The MIDI adapter (connects drum kit to PDP Adapter): ~$30

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00409SOD2

The PDP adapter (connects MIDI adapter to console) that just started shipping: ~$30

http://pdp.com/en/rock-bandtm-wired-legacy-adapter

u/jbigboote · 7 pointsr/xbox360

have you seen the newer OEM controller, that has the "transforming" D-pad?

u/raojason · 7 pointsr/pcgaming

you need something like this

u/IllIllIII · 7 pointsr/GameDeals

Yep, it's the equivalent of the GOTY edition if I'm not mistaken. New disc versions only go down to $15, and rarely $10. Normal price is $20 on Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/Red-Dead-Redemption-Game-Year-microsoft/dp/B005N4HBE6/

Also, Siren Blood Curse Episodes 1-12 only go on sale once a year during the Halloween sale. This is the lowest price it's ever been.

Castlevania SOTN is a PS1 classic that's playable on PS3, PSP, and Vita, but you might want to go with the Dracula X Chronicles for PSP/Vita as it's only $2 more and comes with original Rondo of Blood, its remake, and SOTN. Only the remake is playable at first; you'll need to unlock the others.

I just bought the xbone thumb sticks and installed them on my DS4. This was the best decision ever! At first I was skeptical but all the people over at r/ps4mods highly recommended it! Just be sure to watch a few how to install videos and then you'll be golden. I bought these ...

They fit perfectly and if you have ever used a xbone controller you know they have wonderful grip. Good luck bud!

Protip: You can get one for $25 from Amazon. The only downside to the 360 controller, in my experience, is that the D-pad sucks. Newer models have a better D-pad, but they'll also run you about sixty Earthican buckazoids.

I also have one of these. Games don't tend to discover and auto-configure to it as well as they do with the 360 controller, but it's good, solid hardware. The buttons and analog sticks are precise and it's got a good hand-feel. Most importantly, the left analog stick and D-pad are on what's called a "Cyborg" module. That means you can pop it out and turn it around based on your preference. For instance, if you prefer a Playstation-style layout, you can have it. Hell, for 12 buckazoids and free shipping, it's worth trying.

u/lrv94 · 6 pointsr/gaming

I used it at a small nvidia event thing before it was released, but using the final retail model. I didn't really like it too much, I found the screen was a bit too small for some decent gaming, it was heavier than I expected it to be, the controller doesn't feel like it'd be comfortable for long term use and I overall didn't really get the point of it, as without the use of a VPN and always having a strong 4G LTE connection, you can only use it in your house, you know, the place where your PC is, and it's not like you can stream it from your PC, play on shield, do other stuff on pc (such as another user), overall, there's much cheaper solutions to this, if you have a gameklip and a wireless xbox controller with the dongle and some software called splashtop.

Also, shield requires a minimum of a GTX 660, the DIY version works with anything, except it does only stream at 800x600 (stable) and it only works on games that have borderless windowed (or just windowed, if you can deal with start menus etc), but it's a solution if you only play a few games and have a smartphone.

TL;DR: Screen too small, bit too heavy, uncomfortable to use for long periods of time, cheaper alternative if you don't mind some setbacks

EDIT: Word fail

u/Vehk · 6 pointsr/skyrim

yes, so long as you preorder, but honestly I would guess that any copy you get on day 1 will have it, though I could be wrong. You can preorder from Amazon with the cloth map and release-day delivery for only $1 more.

Unfortunately not. E-drums can't be used on Xbox one until PDP's wired legacy adapter comes out his fall. And then it can only work with ION kits, or via the RB3 MIDI Pro adapter with kits that have MIDI out (won't work with USB out). Since your kit only has USB out, you may not be able to use it. (I heard about one way that involves running it through your computer, and then MIDI from your computer to the xbox, but that is impractical for most people.)

Based on this sub's recommendation, I bought an Alesis Nitro kit about 2 months ago for $300 on Amazon. It has MIDI out and is a terrific kit for that price. I can't recommend it enough. I've been using it with Rock Band 3, and can't wait to use it in RB4 when my adapter comes in.

u/Easy_fan · 5 pointsr/Rockband

I have my doubts that the one you linked would work. The PDP wired legacy adapter seems to be coming in and out of stock the last few weeks, so its not discontinued yet. Even then, the PDP adapter only works with 3 devices, the midi pro adapter, ion drums, and the rockband stage kit (do note that while the PDP adapter will hook up the stage kit to the xbox one, there is no coding in RB4 to use it at this time). So even if you could get one of the PDP adapters it would not work with your GH2 explorer.

u/GL4MURR · 5 pointsr/Rockband

It has to pass through the midi interface before it can pass through usb. For that you need the xbox one legacy adapter and xbox 360 midi adapter. (Xbox one legacy adapters were made and sold in short supply and they probably won't come back. If you don't already have one then you should try playing your kit on rock band 3. You can get custom drum songs there too.)

Then you have to set your kit's pads and cymbals to the correct midi notes (using the drum brain), which is how Rock Band knows what gem you're trying to hit. Those numbers are in the manual for the midi adapter

u/jimbonics · 5 pointsr/Rockband

Step one:

Find a PDP Wired Legacy Adapter for a reasonable price and buy it. You cannot use eKits on the XB1 without it and it's a fairly scarce item. It's a very sobering state of affairs.

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=pdp+wired+legacy+adapter

Step two:

Buy this now. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00409SOD2

Also required.

Step three:

Since you're still in the early stages of drumming, the Alesis Nitro kit for $300 $254 is a nice starting point.

HOWEVER

If you can spring 200 more, absolutely for SURE get the new Alesis Surge kit, which is mesh drum heads instead of rubber. Feels more like the real thing, more responsive, and waay quieter.

360 Skyrim: $54.79 on amazon.com

PC Skyrim: $43.99 on amazon.com

That's just a very quick search, not including incredibly common Steam sales (one of the major sources of cheap PC games), Skyrim was recently ~$25 new.

u/darknecross · 5 pointsr/Games

Not on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Borderlands-2-Xbox-360/dp/B0050SYK44/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370620761&sr=8-1&keywords=Borderlands+2

They even have the PC Retail Box version of the game for $25 as well.

I guess the major takeaway is that a lot of people are citing the major Steam Sale prices as the actual price of games on the PC, when in reality they aren't. Suffice to say the majority of people don't only buy games during the Winter and Summer sales, and don't always hold out for a daily sale. PC games are priced the same, but usually come down in price a bit sooner because brick & mortar stores are holding consoles back. That's not to say that console games don't come down in price at all, just see the Borderlands 2 example, plus check other AAA games that came out in the past year -- almost all of them are way cheaper now and in-line with what you'd "expect" on the PC side of things, and that's with the current state of the used game market. And since publishers have hard data on how Steam Sales affect revenue, I can't see why they wouldn't push to have digital deep-discount sales on the next-gen consoles.

u/SausageMcMerkin · 5 pointsr/PS4

From Amazon's product description.

Gamestop has bundles on their web page. With these bundles you are not saving very much any how. I saw a PS4 bundle that you get $10 of a year of PS+; but can easily find just as good of deals for XBL

In fact AMAZON is selling 12 months for $49.79 right now.

12 months of Xbox Live. for $59.99 which comes to $5 a month.

u/Tuxedohousecat · 5 pointsr/wiiu

Amazon doesn't carry Nintendo console stock anymore. The only way to get Nintendo consoles through Amazon are to buy them through other merchants. If you look here at the Wii U you can see it's sold by Scott's Stuff Inc, not directly by Amazon. This is different from say an Xbox, which is sold directly through Amazon. You are right on one thing, though. There are other Wii U sellers on Amazon. If one runs out of stock another probably has some.

u/thisisme5 · 5 pointsr/gaming

For the last time it is not the same price. I fucking dare you to build a Skyrim capable computer for $199.

u/friendofrobots · 5 pointsr/Games

I highly recommend picking up a wired xbox 360 controller: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wired-Controller-Black/dp/B003ZSN600/

I've saved a significant amount of money by buying games like AC2, Arkham Asylum, GTA IV, and Just Cause 2 on Steam sales instead of waiting for the console version to go on sale. It has definitely paid for itself in that respect.

u/Drakel101 · 5 pointsr/gaming

http://xpadder.com/ will let you map the controller's buttons to whatever you want.

If you want to invest in a better controller then the Xbox 360 wired controller is the way to go. Most Games for Windows titles have built in support and it's also reasonably durable and comfortable.

It's just plug n' play with windows. You gotta use a controller for this game.

FIFA 11 is not the same game on PC as it is on the consoles. It is the generation previous engine.

FIFA 12 will be exactly the same. Or so they say.

u/SyncOne · 5 pointsr/GameDeals

Just curious, why not buy the xbox 360 wired controller for $30 and save yourself a few bucks not having to buy the wireless receiver/charging kit? In my experience, I'm never more than 9 feet (length of the cord) away from the computer when gaming.

u/aftli · 5 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

Keep in mind that the one which comes with the dongle ($42) is only slightly more costly than the one that doesn't ($36). Not $20 more. So if you don't have a controller at all, it's not worth buying them separately.

u/McGrude · 4 pointsr/gaming

That connection is only capable of standard definition TV ( 480i )

At the bare minimum connect via a component cable, it will have the white and red audio cables, a yellow composite cable, and a set of blue, green and red component video cables. Using the component video connection from this cable will allow you use either 720p or 1080i.

I connect one of our Xboxes to our TV with component video and it does 1080i just fine. Our other Xbox is on my desk and connects to my monitor via the Xbox VGA cable and is running at the LCD monitor's native resolution of 1680x1050 and looks very good.

For single player games, consider picking up a wired Xbox 360 controller to play with. That way you get the control scheme that your prefer as well as the bonus of a higher resolution/better graphics/mods/etc. I wouldn't recommend it for multiplayer though--for obvious reasons.

Pretty much any ekit will work, provided the brain has a MIDI out, which they almost all do.

What you need to get, RIGHT NOW, is a Mad Katz MIDI Pro adapter.

https://www.amazon.com/Catz-Rock-Band-PRO-ADAPTER-Wii-Nintendo/dp/B00409SOD2

And a MIDI cable. The e-kit can come later, but you absolutely must have that adapter. 20 bucks used, because they aren't made anymore, and they will disappear entirely at some point.

But as for kits, The Nitro Surge is really dope for the price point.

u/BaddDadd2010 · 4 pointsr/Rockband

Amazon, only $20. It says it's used, but it's actually new. It just has a manufacturing defect that makes the plastic shell sticky. Clean it with rubbing alcohol or goo-gone.

u/Hypobasis · 4 pointsr/Games

Couple more reasons for the 360 controller:

Most games support it out of the box, and most will replace the UI elements with their respective buttons. So, instead of saying "Press TAB to view the score", it will say "Press (BACK) to view the score" or "Right trigger to shot web" and such.

Off the top of my head I know that Skyrim and NFS: Hot Pursuit support it, along with RFG and just about every GFWL game.

You can also pick up a wired controller if that floats your boat, they work great as well and are slightly more hardy than the wireless FOB.

There's also a couple of variants of the 360 controller, the Onza and the Adjustable D-Pad one that fixes the shitty dpad a little bit.

Exactly this. I've been conflicted for a while, like OP, but realized that while XBONE exclusives are okay now, PS4 is about to blow them out of the water with their future lineup. My XBONE is literally collecting dust at the moment because I'm much more of a PS guy, no matter how much I try other things.

OP, you can also easily order XBONE Thumbsticks from this Amazon seller and use this video to replace the PS4 thumbsticks for the best of both worlds. I did this after losing the rubber on my original sticks and am really happy with the results.

You need:

  • Any Gen xbox
  • Some local storage (enough for the netflix app)
  • Xbox live gold
  • headset

Considering the newest gen xbox is $200 for 4GB onboard storage and includes the headset, you might be best served doing that. However, you can also get a used one for fairly good pricing now. I've seen them go for as low as $80 w/ storage.

u/Alpende · 3 pointsr/xbox360

You can place an official Microsoft Xbox 360 250GB hard drive in the console. Although, that is what I make up out of the first review on amazon. It would be silly if you couldn't place a bigger hard drive in the console.

u/Adayatatime · 3 pointsr/buildapc

Most games are compatible with controllers. A xbox 360 controller will work with no extra drivers since the drivers are already in Windows. Although, you need an adapter to make a wireless controller work. My suggestion is to get a wired controller which plugs in over USB and requires nothing special to work. A PS4 controller, Xbox One controller, and even PS3 controller will work but you have to use special software to make them work. For ease of use, just get a wired xbox 360 controller.

u/juaquin · 3 pointsr/Steam

I haven't tried the Steam version of GTA4, but yeah, when I played the PC version in the past it was completely painless. The 360 controller is supported by default: http://support.rockstargames.com/entries/479429-currently-supported-controllers-for-gta-iv-pc

You'd need something like this if you don't already have a controller. It contains both the controller and the USB wireless adapter. You can also get a normal wired one but for the small price difference, I would go wireless. Just personal preference.

the wired xbox 360 controller is almost always the go-to reccomendation because:

1 it'll last a long time

2 it needs no drivers on windows computers (but if it does they are easy drivers to get)

3 it's comfortable to hold

you can buy a wireless controller too if you want but you also have to buy a reciever for it (which costs around 15 bucks or so)

> I hear Xbox controllers work great, but they are so expensive comparatively.

How many controllers do you need? How often are you buying new controllers? The "Xbox 360 Controller for Windows" (includes the wireless dongle, does not include a rechargeable battery but does include 2 AAs) is currently about $50. Adding a Quick Charge Kit and spare battery is an optional ~$45 that you can spend later. Also, I believe that the wireless dongle allows multiple controllers to connect to it (I haven't verified this, though), so you can buy "regular" Xbox 360 wireless controllers for players 2-4.

Or you can get a wired controller for $34 and skip all the battery stuff.

I guess that's kind of expensive, but they Just Work^tm so you don't have to keep messing around with them or replacing them.

Easiest thing to do would be to buy a wired 360 controller.

The game works perfectly with the 360 controller, no setup required.

If you go the wireless route you do need to purchase a wireless receiver. I bought a cheap knock-off receiver (was a lot cheaper than the official one) but windows doesn't automatically detect it as a 360 controller wireless receiver. You have to do the whole device manager dance to get the correct driver loaded. After that it worked perfectly. I imagine the official wireless receiver will be plug-and-play with windows 10.

The PDP Afterglow is a solid bet. It's a cabled Xbox 360 controller that I personally find to have better ergonomics than the traditional 360 controller. D-pad on it is a damned sight better than the regular Xbox 360 controller's as well.

The Hori Gempad is another cheap option, and I can personally attest that the D-pad on the controller is fantastic for 2D fighters like SFV or Arc System Works games.

That said, corded official Xbox 360 controllers are like $15-$20 on Amazon. They're fine for 3D games but the D-pad is garbage.

u/brintnall12 · 2 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

I only have one controller and it's this. I would play with the controller and my girlfriend would play with the keyboard. But, I know you can play with all controllers because when you play local co-op you have to go into a menu and choose which player uses which controller.

u/archontruth · 2 pointsr/ffxiv

I use an X-Box 360 controller, and have no problem with the d-pad. It works very well, and since it's a Microsoft product, the drivers download automatically, it's plug(-configure)-and-play. Just make sure you get one with a USB connector, like the Afterglow

> If you don't want other devices brought into the argument, don't use the argument of 'I can do a lot more on PC'. Obviously it's going to bloat into discussion of 'what should I have in house' rather than what should I game on...

Read context, that is an argument against consoles and none of what you've said pertains to it. It won't go in a discussion of "what should I have in house" since PC vs Console is discussion of just that, PC vs Console. It's like if two people are talking about which car is better then one person goes on to say bicycles are better for your health because the discussion went onto safety/health. Even if it doesn't relate to the PC vs Console discussion, your arguments don't make sense. I've already mentioned and detailed why your argument doesn't make sense so you or whomever can read what's already been typed.

> I don't want to brag: I own quite a few devices (well, I don't have Xbox One - other than that I have all the bases covered). Despite having a top of the line PC, and even having DYI Steam Box. I still find myself using PS4 quite a lot for multi-platform titles. It's not marketing when your mates come around with bunch of beer and you drink your ass off while playing FIFA. I tried it with PC at the turn of generation, next day when I sobered up I drove to store and bought PS4... What else? CoD is a console-only series for me. Same goes for pretty much every racing game (rFactor excluded)... Just to name few examples.

Ok but that doesn't mean consoles are objectively better, your points are subjective which means nothing if you want to compare facts. Sorry if that sounded harsh but so far you've only provided subjective arguments and irrational counterpoints. I can connect my PC to my TV, controllers to my PC and play FIFA on my PC so why would I spend an additional $400 + tax when I can already do that on my PC? If you want to play on the couch and that seems to be the preference for how you play, that's ok. You can do that for both PC and consoles but PCs are objectively better in most, if not everything a console can do. That is why there is an argument with "PCs can do everything a console can do and more", im not just saying it out my ass for the sake of discussion. That is also why I'm refuting your arguments since it makes no sense and contributes to nothing.

> You'd be surprised how much the Steam's cut is. It's less than what the retailer/importer/publisher would get, but still it's not as great as you paint it. There are other benefits for devs - the fact you actually can sell the game is among them.

No I'm not surprised, how do you think indie devs survive like the team that made the Metro: 2033? It's still better in both profits and the control of your own game than trying to get a publisher like EA to agree to sell your game then have them take control of the development of your own game. I'd rather give devs more tools and control of how they publish their game instead of worry about upholding to stockholders expectations. Why are you under the impression that selling games on Steam or Amazon is not that much better compared to retailers like Gamestop when it actually is?

> I'd be hard pressed to find a 1 or more year old game on Steam that's priced equally to console counterpart. That's how it works where I live, although YMMV. Regardless, remember the USofA is not the only place on Earth where gaming happens...

Yeah they're not equal, Steam version or any online PC version will cost less.

PC Tomb Raider:

Steam: $19.99
Amazon: $19.99 and on discount for $7.99 link

Console xbox360/ps3:

xbox360: $19.99 on discount for $17.16
PS3: $49.48

Console Xbone/PS4 (Definitive Edition)

XBone: $41.42
PS4: $52.99

Bioshock Infinite: amazon link

PC:

Steam: $29.99

Amazon: Physical Copy - $39.99 on discount for $11.99, Digital $29.99

xbox360/ps3

xbox360: $19.99 on discount for $15.24
ps3: $19.99

This took like 10 minutes to look for including a bit of formatting. TR cost the same for PC and last generation consoles and $50+ for the definitive edition which is just basically coded for xbone/ps4. So console players have to pay extra to play on the new consoles even though they already paid for one already?

Bioshock Infinite is an interesting one, the PC hard copy cost more but on a bigger discount? Xbox360 is on discount too but is this what you call a discount compared to the PC version? If there was a Xbone and PS4 version, would those have been $40+ with Tomb Raider being an example?

PC games get discounted often in addition to price drops so not only are you getting cheaper games, you can bring out all the visuals at a better framerate than a console can dish out depending on your hardware of course. Even then there are results you can google yourself or go on buildapc subreddit that shows that computer close to $400 can compete with the PS4.

Talking about PC bias when being bias themselves really contradicts doesn't it?

For me it'd have to be Bioshock Infinite - I loved the first 2 games and am excited about the third. I've got a couple more games to finish up before I run out and buy it though (Gears of War Judgement is my current obsession).

u/Hamartithia_ · 2 pointsr/gaming
u/ErrantVenturer · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

Well, how often do you both play it? Do you have lots of games? If you do, you'll need lots of hard drive space and the 4GB Xbox 360 won't cut it.

I'd recommend the 250GB Xbox 360 for $299. Plus, you get two free games from it if you don't already have Fable 3 and Halo: Reach. It's also WiFi ready out of the box so you won't have to buy that accessory.

I hung out at Best Buy for 3 hours on Black Friday and picked the 250 GB Xbox 360 for $199. It was a good deal and mine had stopped reading discs earlier that day. I doubt you'll get one for that cheap this close to Christmas, so you're probably looking at spending around $300 for one.

Let me know if you have any more questions and I'd be happy to answer!

Since we are talking game systems, lets compare this to this. Or this to this. Oh. You want to discuss the cost of flash? What about just buying one of these? At least that comes out to be about $1 for every extra GB. Nintendo knows a thing or two about making cartridges, I don't see how they can justify the markup for what is basically a circuit board. I'm not hating on them, and like I said, I didn't realize that the cheaper one doesn't include NintendoLand. So, that was my fault. But the above example with the PS3 includes a game and 160GB more than the one that is only $50 less. I'm just not that impressed.

A quick google search tells me that it's possible to use a PlayStation controller with a PC, but I don't know how well that works. I got myself a Xbox 360 controller for PC (it's an ordinary wired Xbox 360 controller with a USB adapter) so I could better play certain games on my PC, and as someone who grew up playing PS1 and PS2 along with a little PS3 I think it works excellently.

Just curious, why are you building a gaming PC if you would rather play on a console?

u/EChondo · 2 pointsr/pcgaming

This it?

You could always buy a wired Xbox 360 controller.

*Edit, Nevermind, I read the reviews. You would think they would get rid of the "Microsoft" link under the title. Well it looks like your only alternative is getting a wired controller or a knock off, sorry mate. I can't find anything official, unless you want to go find one used.

u/Skunkwourk · 2 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

It's also on sale at newegg right now for $29.99, slightly cheaper than Amazon's $34.99 although you can get it for a little less from a 3rd party vendor.

u/BreatheLife · 2 pointsr/gaming
u/nanowerx · 2 pointsr/battlefield3

Basically a wireless 360 or PS3 controller needs some sort of wireless receiver connected to your PC to work. The wired 360 ones are plug and play, however.

Your best bet is to suck it up and get a wired 360 controller as that and the wireless receiver are pretty close in price, and you would have an extra controller.

u/Pufflekun · 2 pointsr/gaming

If you don't already have one, I recommend picking up a 360 controller for $29 on Amazon.

u/Ed-Zero · 2 pointsr/pcgaming

There's a couple more types of controllers but these are the main ones. Hope this helps!

u/magicpostit · 2 pointsr/gaming

I bought it back in 2006 and it played fairly well with just mouse+keyboard. Fast forward to last week, when I finally buy a wired xbox 360 controller, and it's so much better.

So, it does support controllers, and do yourself a favor (if you're on a pc) and pick up one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wired-Controller-Black/dp/B003ZSN600/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324565176&sr=8-1

Best PC gamepad I've ever tried, unfortunately, if you're on an Apple with the most up-to-date OS (I have a 4-year old Macbook, it's my portable SMB/Braid/Machinarium machine) finding a driver that will make it work is a pain in the ass. Tattiebogie does not work.

Also, it's cheaper to buy it on Steam and get a wired controller than any of the copies I've seen for sale for Xbox. And you now have a controller for any other platformers you may have.

u/UnworthyPie · 2 pointsr/gaming

The Wired Xbox Controllers are in my opinion the best you can get.
They're the best for any RPG or FPS. This is all coming from a bias point of view because before I was PC gaming I was an Xbox gamer.
As for the price I don't see how $30 is much of a problem. I am aware that there are various MadCatz controllers that are dirt cheap but of course you are then sacrificing quality.
However if we're talking about simulation or sport games that is not my Forté so I can't help you out too much there.

u/squidthesid · 2 pointsr/gaming

The Razer Onza and the official first party Microsoft Xbox360 wired controllers are the best ones you can go with. Nearly every game that supports a gamepad supports a 360 controller and its keys.

u/darkstar3333 · 2 pointsr/gaming

You can find them packaged at places like Amazon or BestBuy under Xbox Controller for Windows.

Controller
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wired-Controller-Black/dp/B003ZSN600

There are wired variations but the USB adapter lets you use 4 standard 360 controllers at the same time.

If you have a PS3 there are some 3rd party applications you can install that allows you to use that controller.

u/FoxxyRin · 2 pointsr/gaming

Just get a USB 360 controller? My boyfriend and I used a MadCatz until he finally broke it from spin-sticking way too hard. We have the official Microsoft one now, and it's super high quality feeling and stuff.

As for customization, I'm pretty sure you can map the keys however you want so long as the game you're playing allows it. If it doesn't allow it, look into software like Xpadder, which allows you to set any button as any key/key combination on your keyboard.

EDIT: Also, a LOT of controller compatible games (4/5, maybe?) have a default Xbox layout, making Xbox 360 controllers instantly compatible with the game.

u/rideoutthetide · 2 pointsr/gameswap

The one I bought. Don't bother getting the wireless PC version. Much more expensive and who sits that far away from a PC monitor anyways?

u/Shadoom01 · 2 pointsr/pcgamingtechsupport

How it goes with the xbox 360 controllers, is that there is only two ways of connecting to the PC:

1.) Directly connected with a controller with the cable built in, not any of the controllers with batteries or battery packs. The Play and Charge cable is only for charging your controller(s)' and/or playing directly connected to a xbox360. But not supported for PC play.

2.) A specific wireless dongle that will allow your wireless controllers to connect wirelessly to your computer.

The links are only to Amazon, and there will definitely be better deals to be found. Hopefully this helps out.
Good Luck, Have Fun.

u/ZodeNine · 2 pointsr/DIY

Well, my understanding is you currently can use an xbox controller, so I just wanted to toss it out there ( because it might fit your needs and is pretty cheap) that you can buy a wired xbox controller and use it for PC gaming.

Here is the support article for setup, and here are links for the controllers themselves from Best Buy, GameStop, and Amazon. As I recall (a friend of mine has a similar setup for her pc gaming) you fine-tune the controls through the individual game settings.

If that wouldn't work for you, or if you think a customized keyboard would be better, I hope someone can provide some help. (The potential driver patching for such a project is probably above my own abilities)

u/ZapActions-dower · 2 pointsr/GirlGamers

If you like the Xbox controller, there are three easily solutions for you, by increasing price:

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-360-Wired-Controller/dp/B003ZSN600

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Controller-Windows/dp/B004QRKWKQ

http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-One-Wireless-Controller/dp/B00CMQTUSS

I use the middle option, as I prefer not having any more cables than necessary, plus any Xbox 360 controller can connect to the wireless dongle, meaning you can buy extra, new model controllers (not Xbox One) or use any controllers you can borrow. The Xbox One controller must remain plugged in via Micro-USB (included,) and the wired Xbox 360 controller obviously is wired. Microsoft has released drivers for all three and they should install automatically. For right now, there is no way to connect an Xbox One controller wirelessly.

For PS3, you will have to find a driver package. I used motioninjoy so I could use my PS3 controller for emulating SNES games, but it messed up other drivers and I ended up uninstalling it and using my 360 controller exclusively. Once the drivers are installed, you can use a Bluetooth dongle to connect the PS3 controller to the PC wirelessly.

A PS4 controller can also be used via Bluetooth, but requires DS4Tool which maps the buttons on the DS4 controller to their corresponding Xbox 360 buttons.

Xbox 360 Wired Controller works flawlessly for everything. Bought this without even owning a 360. Other third-party (and cheaper) controller certified for the 360 should work similarly well. My buddy has a cheaper Mad Catz one that works. It just uses a different driver, but Windows 7 should be able to find it automatically. u/DiabolicallyRandom · 2 pointsr/Borderlands

Correction: It is not a bluetooth device. There are USB adapters, however, to connect wireless 360 controllers to a PC. At retail, they are only available packaged with a controller - however, they can be found on EBay without the included controller. You can also sometimes find on amazon just the receiver.

I just picked up a set on amazon earlier this week for 39.99 on sale, complete with controller. Newegg also had a deal yesterday for the same.

The package you would look for is here: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Controller-Windows/dp/B004QRKWKQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1348240766&sr=8-1&keywords=xbox+controller+pc

Or, just the adapter: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000HZFCT2/ref=pd_cp_vg_0

Otherwise, you can just use a "wired" 360 controller, here: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wired-Controller-Black/dp/B003ZSN600/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1348240793&sr=1-1&keywords=xbox+controller+wired

Finally, note that a "play and charge" cable does not allow you to connect to the PC. it must be a real, native, wired controller, or you must have the windows wireless adapter.

Not only do many games support it "out of the box", requiring no setup or re-mapping, they will often change the UI for you, showing button prompts correctly with the icons for the 360 controls. This is why I normally recommend the 360 controller over the PS3 controller.

360 controller also works natively with Steam's big picture mode.

u/CaptainGreezy · 2 pointsr/starcitizen

What came to mind is the MIDI-to-USB adapter used for the Rock Band 3 Pro real guitar. I'd imagine it requires some hacking and a custom driver or something but it seems to solve part of the problem.

u/EverGlow89 · 2 pointsr/gaming

I have good news for you.

You'll still have to make your guitar midi capable, which is kind of expensive to do. But you can use any guitar if you're willing.

u/zleek · 2 pointsr/xbox360

If you have a midi drumset, buy one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Rock-Band-Midi-PRO-Adapter/dp/B00409SOD2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1375604129&sr=8-4&keywords=mad+catz+rock+band+midi

I have one and for the price it's fucking awesome and let's you use your actual set. As for guitar, Les Paul from GH3 is the best but it's hard to find a good one for cheap. I'd recommend creeping on craigslist as sometimes people will sell them without the intention of screwing you over.

u/BravoGangUS · 2 pointsr/Rockband

All you will need is a RB3 Midi Pro Adapter and a midi cable to go from your e-kit's midi-out to the adapter.

Rock band instruments are MIDI compatible. My irl band actually recorded a demo with a rockband drum kit.

Right person! You can buy a midi brain for your selected system from amazon.

Here is for Xbox 360: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00409SOD2/ref=redir_mdp_mobile

Just need a midi cable going from your "midi out" on your actual drum brain going into the rockband brain. The rockband brain then works VIA USB. Works like a charm.

Um, USB is USB. The only thing I could imagine you doing wrong is losing the breakaway cable, but in that case how would you be using it on the console?

u/Nawara_Ven · 2 pointsr/AskGames

Xbox 360 controllers of all sorts come with what's called a "breakaway cable" that will purposely disconnect when yanked on, since actual USB connections are so firm; MS doesn't want you yanking your console off the entertainment stand.

You should be able to find something like this without too much difficulty! (Or get the original seller to send you the part of the stick's cable he forgot to include.)

I think you should at least give it a shot. As much as it can be frustrating because you don't have control over what other people do and they may take loot you want, etc., the game is also designed to be played in coop so there are a lot of cool things you will not experience if you only play solo, mainly in terms of the interactions and synergies between the different Vault Hunters' skills.

Like I said in a response below, the best way to do it is with friends but if that's not possible, be patient and consistently stay away from people who play like assholes (leave the game or kick them out of yours) and add nice people to your friend list in order to keep playing with them in the future. This has resulted in a lot of really satisfactory gameplay for me in BL2. Also, this subreddit can be a good resource to find cool people to play with.

Finally, as much as many people are ok with playing with you if you don't have a mic, it is something that really enhances the experience so maybe you could consider investing in one. You don't need to spend $100, there are more budget friendly options like this one or this one that some people will hate on but they work perfectly fine if you adjust your expectations to the amount of money you're spending and they will last if you treat them with care. Even this is an interesting option if you're on Xbox and I'm sure there's similar alternatives for other systems.

They're amazing. You can adjust the game and chat sound with the headset. The sound is so much better, especially for fps and adventure games. You hear every little detail and you can properly feel the tone of the game. You can also put the tv on mute and listen solely through the headset if you need silence in the house for some reason. The best part is that it's $40 so it's not hurting your pockets too much.

There are better quality ones out, but it's great if you're like me and just want a headset that plays the game audio with chat features for cheap.

I've played thru RDR many times and it looks also amazing on the X like a remaster, John Marston was main lead character in RDR, RDR2 is the prequel to RDR. After you play RDR2 I would totally recommend playing RDR1 to follow the story.

RDR1&2 have amazing characters that you'll love along with the story and the amount of content in each will last you a long time, to me it's worth double the price tag. RDR1 I'm pretty sure you cn buy the GOTY edition on sale right now for a steal at $15 on Amazon

Really easy. Tons of youtube tutorials on the subject too. Entire time takes about less than 10 minutes. Scariest part is after removing the back screws, prying the two pieces apart to get to the guts. After that it's two unplugs of ribbon cables, lifting battery, one more PH00 screw, lift board, remove sticks, install new sticks, then reverse process.

Swapped out all my ds4 sticks for Xbox one sticks, and waiting on 2 2000 mAh batteries from Hong Kong to replace the stock batteries. Gonna be sweet.

u/thai_mish · 2 pointsr/PS4

u/Talutha · 2 pointsr/skyrimmods

Getting the touchpad to work with Skyrim is actually really easy. You can use http://www.DS4Windows.com to remap the touchpad to various keyboard inputs. Then I used this mod to change the button mapping to where all of my favorites are on the Dpad with the left bumper as a modifier so you get all 8 favorites accessable. After that, you follow the direction on the mod you linked to allow the keyboard and controller to be usable at the same time. You can't use both mods at the same time because they both edit the same file so you'll need to take the first mod and edit its file with the directions on the second mods page.

What I ended up with is all 8 favorites on the Dpad and I bound the various swipes/actions on the touchpad to keyboard commands.

  • Swipe Up - Perks
  • Swipe Down - Map
  • Swipe Left - Magic
  • Swipe Right - Inventory
  • Left side press - Realistic Needs and Disease status
  • Right Side Press - Frostfall menu
  • Top Press - Weathersense
  • Two finger press - Quicksave(I use this mod for better quick saves)

After that, I set DS4Windows to use the PS button as a modifier key adding even more buttons to the controller.

  • Swipe Up - Drink from streams
  • Swipe Down - Turn Wearable Lanterns on/off
  • Swipe Left - Skyrim Tycoon Influence
  • Swipe Right - Skyrim Tycoon Supply
  • Left Press - Wearable Lantern Fuel
  • X - ENB Screenshot
  • Square - Uses a macro to open console, Toggle the menus and free cam
  • Triangle - Same as square but pauses the game world with TFC 1
  • Circle - Turns my ENB on and off.

Works perfectly! The only thing you really have to do is when you are rebinding keys in the DS4Windows program is make sure that the 'Scan Code' box is checked otherwise they don't work in the game for some reason. Also, when you are binding keyboard keys ingame to various mods, your controller still has to be off otherwise the game doesn't pick them up.

The versatility of the touchpad alone makes the DS4 hands down waaaaay better than the XB1 controller. The only thing I'm missing now is a mod to change all the buttons in SkyUI to the PS4 buttons. The mod on the workshop unfortunately doesn't work anymore. That or a mod for the controller itself to change the buttons to Xbox buttons since I don't use my PS4 all that much.

Also, I suggest modding your PS4 controller to use Xbox One thumbsticks. They are by far superior and it is actually really easy to do. Both controllers get their thumbsticks from the same manufacturer so they are interchangeable. Here are the thumbsticks I bought off Amazon. And here is a really awesome video showing you how easy it is to do.

Good luck buddy! If you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll do what I can to help!

That is only counting Amazon. Lets see what the used controllers are going for at lowest 23$. And as a customer I now have virtually no reason to shop at gamestop because why waste my money when I can use Amazon who is a much better middleman than gamestop? You would go out of business because the competition is making a better offer than you. It only works for gamestop because of low customer knowledge, laziness, and a good chunk of gamers are minors. Though on occasion gamestop will have the better price or close enough to be worth the extra for convenience, but that's rare in my experience.

You don't have to believe, source here It's not as absurd as others said but it's still shows how much Gamestop relies on used games sales.

The video game market is very different from other markets.

Just wanna ask since I have no experience with any of this stuff, I would need to buy this + the midi-pro adapter for xbox360 in order to connect an actual electronic drum set to rb4 for xbox one? Or am I not understanding correctly?

u/Ruiner46 · 1 pointr/Rockband

Any legit electronic drum set will come with it's own "brain" with a MIDI output. You can then hook it up to a Rock Band MIDI adapter, the same one used for pro guitar (http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Rock-Band-Midi-PRO-Adapter/dp/B00409SOD2). I actually built an electronic drumset from used acoustic drums that I found at a pawn shop, and built a Megadrum DIY drum module for it and I have it hooked up to the rock band MIDI adapter. Works great for pro drums and is amazingly fun to play. It's still pretty expensive compared to something like the Ion. If you can piece together an electronic drumset and don't want to shell out the money for a nice brain and aren't able to build something like Megadrum, you can look for a cheaper trigger to MIDI interface to hook up your drum pads.

u/Pandos636 · 1 pointr/Rockband

I'm not on RB4 yet, so someone correct me if my info is outdated. That drum should work just fine. The connector you need is the Rockband MIDI Pro-Adapter found Here for X-box and Here for Playstation. It's pretty much impossible to find the adapter other than online. In addition you will need to purchase a short MIDI to MIDI cable as seen here (these are pretty easy to find at any music store, but you'll pay the usual 400% markup). Total cost is somewhere around $25-$45 to get you up and running.

u/oglopez · 1 pointr/GuitarHero

Whoa! Right on! Thank you! The E-Drums sounds so cool, I'm not sure I'm ready to invest on a whole separate electric kit just yet. I thought I was gonna tinker with the toy set it came with. By any chance, do you know if there are any drum triggers I can apply to an acoustic drum set that can work with the midi controller you mentioned? Or if it can even work this way? Seems a little unorthodox but I also have an acoustic set laying around.

and is this the adapter?

u/fork_paper_plate · 1 pointr/Rockband

for the xbox 360 you can find a ion drum rocker brain on ebay

it would take the input from the intruments like a brain and convert it to an xbox 360 controller.

if your drumset has a midiout then https://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Rock-Band-Midi-PRO-Adapter/dp/B00409SOD2?th=1

my drumset doesnt actually have a midiout but has a printer like cable out

but i think it requires a drum brain to work. Like most kits would need, the ion one is a brain of its own and connects directly to the pads.

as I said before i had an ion drum rocker at some point so i just used that brain for my good kit up until i started just playing phase shift on pc.

u/MrStruggleSnuggle · 1 pointr/xboxone

Yeh would be good. I assume that's what the next game will allow as well as the usual plastic instruments. I was excited to order that version (I'm in canada) but I cannot have it shipped to me so I'm stuck with the 100+ version it seems unfortunately. Unless there is another means of purchasing it.

You need the Rock Band 3 MIDI Pro Adapter plus the PDP Wired Legacy Adapter to use your drum kit with Rock Band on an Xbox One. You also need a MIDI Cable to connect your DM7X drum brain to the the MIDI Pro Adapter.

The easiest (and probably cheapest) option would be to get the new 360 controller

If you didn't know, the d-pad can actually transforms from the disc into a traditional plus d-pad. Probably your easiest and cheaper option. If you know who Fanatiq is (a pad player of MvC2 fame), he uses this pad when playing MvC3 and said that he loves it.

If all else fails, I suggest you hit up Tech Talk on SRK. I'm sure someone will have an answer for you there.

u/Zibber · 1 pointr/gaming

I have it and love it. The morphing d-pad isn't that helpful because it is still just a disk that moves the exact same as the normal controller. The main reason I wanted it was for the sticks; instead of the bumps that wear out for grip it has an entire ridge around. They don't wear out and feel much better on my thumbs.

Those worried about price; you can get it on amazon for $45.

u/cybrian · 1 pointr/gamecollecting

Unfortunately this was one of the less attractive official colors, and it was one of the few that came with the upgraded twistable d-pad. Fortunately, a $2 AliExpress shell would make it not look so bad.

I have a silver chrome one myself. Definitely not my favorite controller. I prefer my matte silver with monochrome buttons. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0041HROGG/

u/jgclark · 1 pointr/gaming

This is the newer model with the improved D-Pad (and the description claims improved shoulder buttons, as well).

I don't think this has a wired variant.

That looks like it coverts the proprietary end to USB. Wouldn't a 360 dongle, do the same with less plugging? Although, I guess I wouldn't be surprised if they changed dongle connectors too...

u/YoungvLondon · 1 pointr/ucf

They have them on amazon, and they're decently cheap. They're called breakaway cables.
http://www.amazon.com/HDE-Xbox-360-USB-Breakaway-Cable/dp/B0046RMJRU

u/chubbysumo · 1 pointr/techsupport

Its not a PS/2. its a breakaway cable. There should be a piece that plugs into that that turns into USB. Something that looks like this

u/serfis · 1 pointr/gameswap

Hey man, got the pictures.

http://imgur.com/RBKuY2Q

http://imgur.com/Yutuuxd

That second picture is to show you that it is missing that piece at the end that connects to the Xbox. It's this part, the breakaway cable. I have another wired controller (my main one) that does have the part, or I can order you a part on Amazon if you'd like.

u/srylain · 1 pointr/GuitarHero

That guitar would indeed work on PC, you just need to be sure you have a breakaway cable since I couldn't see on that site if it did include one (https://www.amazon.com/HDE-Xbox-360-USB-Breakaway-Cable/dp/B0046RMJRU). That being said, it's a 360 guitar so it has guaranteed support on Windows as all 360 controllers do.

Going forward though, the amount of work necessary to really be able to play GH3PC is unnecessarily high and I would recommend Clone Hero instead since adding songs to it and getting it running on PC is vastly easier and much less of a pain.

u/theendisnear_ · 1 pointr/CloneHero

I have it and it works perfectly for me. All you'll need to do is map the controls but that takes like 2 minutes. Though you'll probably need an adapter to make the circle thing into USB

Since Microsoft has managed to convince me not to buy an Xbox One, I'm interested in seeing what Sony has to offer with the PS4. I thought the PS3 was a disappointment, so if they learned from their gigantic mistakes and improved on their strengths, this generation could be huge for them.

But more than anything, I'm looking forward to the Steam Box. All Valve has to do is take the stage, tell us the launch date, price, and announce Half Life 3 as a launch game, then drop the mic. Mass pandemonium would erupt from the convention center, riots of geek joy would break out around the country. With Nintendo off with their own audience and Microsoft shooting themselves in the foot with each passing press event, Valve has picked the absolute perfect time to enter the console market. Assuming the price doesn't kill it before arrival, of course.

As for a game I'm looking forward to, that would have been easy if Nintendo was physically at E3. I'd just say the new Smash Bros. game. But since they won't be around, I'd say I'm looking forward to new information about Fallout 4. Maybe now I can get some answers I've been looking for, like why bottlecaps are currency, why people can't be bothered to tidy up their cities and homes even after they're fully settled, and how seemingly no one can wear a piece of clothing that doesn't have a hole or look like it hasn't been in a dirt pile for three weeks.

Here's my game!

When someone is an Amazon Affiliate, their referral tag is in the URL. For example:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0050SYK44/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0050SYK44&linkCode=as2&tag=tacbacon-20

That is the same link as above, but with my fairly obvious referral tag at the end. I stripped the actual link for obvious reasons in this thread. If the link contains tag= near the end, it's a referral. Keep in mind that many Affiliates will use gibberish tags to make it less obvious, so they will not always be as easy to spot as the one above. It's also possible to have many different tags for each Affiliate account, so the same person can have multiple different tags.

There is an HD collection available to you which includes 2, 3, and Peace Walker.

As for MGS1 and 4... those are different stories. 4 is exclusive to PS3 although you don't absolutely have to play it unless you want complete closure.. which some people weren't happy with. I was, I enjoy the absurdity. But MGS1 should be fairly easy to emulate. Alternatively you can play MGS1 if you have a PS2/PS1 or Gamecube (GCN has a remake entitled Twin Snakes).

u/JONNy-G · 1 pointr/gaming

https://www.amazon.com/Metal-Gear-Solid-Collection-Xbox-360/dp/B0050SYOOA

This is what I have. 30 bucks.

You might want to get caught up on the story from Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, and Metal Gear Solid before hopping in, but it doesn't matter too much.

Great games, though, and honestly, the controls put some people off, but learning them, then mastering them to get those crucial headshots is pretty great, and feels a lot better on Xbox controllers than PS2 controllers.

But yeah, there's a ton of depth to the gameplay, a lot of easter eggs and funny moments if you look for them, a crazy story, and just so many ways to complete a mission that I've beaten each game multiple times just trying to find everything I could.

Enjoy!

I really loved these headphones when I used to have an inline mic. Really good sound quality, comfortable, and a very good deal.

The negative reviews are all about fragility and I can comment on that - had mine for about two years before the mic just stopped working and the sound started coming in really strange. That said, these are relatively cheap, so it's a trade off.

When they wore out I made the mistake of proceeding to try five different headphones, and hating them all. Turtle beach for life.

I recommend the Logitech G230 headset, its 7.1 surround and the mic is absolutely stellar compared to my Turtle Beach X12 headset. The mic on it was absolute dog shit, my mates kept hearing echoing in teamspeak. Could have been a faulty headset but i'm well pleased with the upgrade and it's in your price range. It matches my black and red setup like a dream.

I've picked them up for... cheaper on sale in the past. I don't like wireless (battery life, interference) and spending a lot of money on a wired set that won't last too long seems like a bad idea for my usage.

Welcome back!

Here's my list of suggestions, why, and links to where to get them. A few are only available on computer, but you'll see which ones:

  • Thomas Was Alone (Meta. A cute puzzle game about AIs, and their relationship to the game and developers. It's simple in graphics and big on heart. = computer - itunes - android
  • The Stanley Parable (another meta game. About the players role in games itself and their relationship to the developers. This is a MUST HAVE for anyone who is really into games. It's fantastic, hilarious and oddly artsy) = computer -
  • Telltale's "The Walking Dead" seasons 1 & 2. (These are some of the best games I've played. Point and Click adventure games that everyone loves, even those who don't like point and click games. They are extremely emotional and heart-pounding. I recommend it highly, especially if you want a game that you can watch him play, or vice versa, and really get a fantastic story. Storyline continues based on your decisions in the previous game) = SEASON ONE: computer - PS3 - XBOX360 - PSVITA - iPhone/iPad (first episode free, others are in-game purchases, same with all the mobile games) - Android === SEASON 2: computer - PS3 - XBOX360 - iPhone/iPad - Android
  • To The Moon (sweet looking 16 bit game that is more of an interactive story. It routinely makes people cry because it's so darned sweet. Love is a central theme.) = computer
  • Borderlands 2 and/or Borderlands the PreSequel (both fun and funny FPS games that you can run coop if you like) = BORDERLANDS 2: computer - XBOX360 - PS3 === BORDERLANDS PRESEQUEL: computer - XBOX360 - PS3
  • Portal (fun and funny puzzle game - but he MAY have already played this if the Half-Life 2 he got was the full "The Orange Box")
  • Portal 2 (also fun and funny, but with a coop mode as well) = computer - XBOX360 - PS3
  • Fallout 3 and/or Fallout: New Vegas (Post apocolypic games that are fun and often funny. They are open world RPGs with FPS playing style, although you can switch to 3rd person. Fallout 3 is more epic, grand and is more metropolitan, and Fallout New Vegas is more like a spaghetti western, intimate, and has better writing/storyline in my opinion) = FALLOUT 3: computer - XBOX360 - PS3 == FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS: computer - XBOX360 - PS3
  • Mass Effect 1, 2, & 3 (RPG/FPS set the future, in space, where the storyline continues, using your decisions from the previous games) = computer - XBOX360 - PS3
  • Red Dead Redemption (an open world RPG/FPS that takes pages from both spaghetti westerns and film noir. If you get this, be sure to get the add on called "Undead Nightmare", where you fight Zombies and meet mythical creatures. The base game is more artsy, and Undead Nightmare is just a squat load of fun.) The links that follow have both thenormal game, and Undead Nightmare in one. = XBOX360 - PS3

  • A different idea is to actually get him a wireless controller for his phone! If he has an Andriod, I would suggest the Power A Moga Hero Power It's portable, holds the phone, and I just am in love with mine. And because I have an Andriod, I can download ROMs to play older games like Zelda: Ocarina of Time, etc etc. But the controller works with SO many games! If he has an iPhone or iPad, or if you want another option for Android, I would go with the iPega. I don't have one, but it has the highest reviews.

As for if you should give 1 or 2 gifts, I think 2 might be a lot of fun! But it might depend on what the "1st place" person has on their list and what you want to give them! I'd say make the decision based off of what you want to give the main winner! =)

    ===========

EDIT - 3DS Games to consider:

  • Fire Emblem: Awakening - it's one of the best RPGs out for the 3DS. It's immersive and epic. Top reviews across the board.
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf because everyone loves it so much and it's just adorable.
  • Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney because anything Phoenix Wright related is flipping amazing and totally fun.
  • Kingdom Hearts 3D Dream Drop Distance A great option if he's played other Kingdom Hearts games.
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Especially if he's into Zelda, I agree with others that this is a nice option. Top-down action that returns to Zelda's roots.

edit 2: P.S: I'm new. I'll be making an intro post hopefully tonight! So hopefully it's alright that I posted here first. I was just excited, as I'm a gamer and love helping people with what to play next. In any event... HI!!

okay thanks for finally explaining that.

With that said you're better off buying a 3rd party controller for the 360 they run the same price as a random USB controller. Often around $15 Another usb controller will have it's own issue. You buy a 3rd party 360 controller you'll be able to use it without an issue on 360 and play PC games with it as well.

The chances of getting a fake unintentionally are quite low, if you directly from Amazon and check that it says under brand "Microsoft", but id also check the reviews.

There is a good guide on eBay on how to spot the more convincing fakes.

Here are some fakes if you are looking to intentionally buy one: 1 2 3

Amazon US manage to keep sellers from using misleading language in the title, and usually require the seller to put a brand name other than Microsoft at the beginning of the title, unfortunately on the UK site it is more common, as you can see here.

Many modified controllers use fake parts, because the fakes usually have test points that can be used, making it much easier. Often the seller will use a genuine case and a fake circuit board, meaning there is no way to be 100% certain without opening the controller.

Fakes should always feel lighter than a genuine controller, however I once purchased one, where the seller had ripped out the rumble motors and put a ziplock bag of sand in each handle.

u/stupidandroid · 1 pointr/Reds

Most likely will have to go online. this one is a generic one, the actual microsoft ones are a little more expensive. Mine's actually a generic gamestop brand one but it does the trick.

This one. But it doesn't seem like a power supply issue to me. The issue persists whether or not the controller is plugged in so it's not a problem of power draw from the controller, and the audio does play through HDMI so the console is still processing audio.

u/Veritas413 · 1 pointr/techsupport

If you're trying to hook a 360 to a computer monitor, there's the Xbox 360 VGA Cable.

You'll need an adapter for audio, RCA to 1/8" female if you want to plug in computer speakers.

I can give you more information if this is the right track.

u/LiL_BrOwNiE247 · 1 pointr/techsupport

I asked my friend about this setup (he has a similar setup of his own) and said to get this cable instead. He said that the cheaper cables may get the job done but they end up having issues with ghosting, whereas if you spring the $36 for the Microsoft one you shouldn't have any issues.

Either way, thanks for the help.

If you're trying to record the xbox on your PC, you may also consider either a video capture card and this cable : http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-VGA-HD-AV-Cable/dp/B000B6MLTG

u/Guest101010 · 1 pointr/xbox360

I'm guessing you're using a HDMI/DVI converter, which of course won't carry sound.

I'm afraid that, unlike with the PS3, there is no way to output audio through a different cable than you're outputting video (unless you count the optical audio out, which doesn't exist on an HDMI cable).

The good news? You can use this cable with your monitor. Don't be fooled by the HDMI nonsense; VGA will be just as good as HDMI!

u/famousjoshua · 1 pointr/Gaming4Gamers

You can get a VGA out for an Xbox 360.

http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-VGA-HD-AV-Cable/dp/B000B6MLTG/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_1_1

u/radler470 · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

They're VERY simple. Portal 1 is sold as part of the Orange Box bundle. Basically you have a gun that shoots portals... and you have to get from one place to another, trying to escape a test facility run by a robot named GLaDOS. It's a very simply concept, but takes some problem solving. You can usually play through the entire game in about 10 hours or so, depending on how good you are at problem solving. The second game gets a little more in depth and there is a larger story arc that's pretty cool. It's hard to explain. I'd recommend picking up a copy of The Orange Box, and seeing how you like it.

You could argue that the majority of households own a TV suitable for xbox gameplay, but are less likely to have a monitor acceptable for equivalent PC gaming in an appropriate location. But that's a difficult argument to make either way, so I guess it's fair to ignore monitor/tv pricing.

But xbox live is only $60/year if you put no effort into finding a discount. Amazon sells a year for $40.

Just rehashing some of the numbers. I tried so hard to convince myself to build a pc rather than get a next-gen system, but as long as I'm not looking for insanely high-end graphics that significantly beat a console, I just absolutely can't support the notion from a fiscal perspective.

u/Sario27 · 1 pointr/xboxone

I'm glad more people know about this, I don't use Playstation controllers but the issue is the same with Xbox One controllers as well and a few 360 controllers. I don't play Rocket League either haha, I actually found about the issue when playing GTA V on PC, and I noticed that I could spin faster on a bike after switching from my Xbox One controller to my 360 controller. If anyone has any information on how to edit the settings for the Xbox One controller to make the range higher I'd really appreciate, because my only option is to use other controllers.

Anyways hopefully I can help you guys out a bit who are looking for a better controller, I've bought both of these 360 controllers and I've noticed the range of motion is a lot higher than the PS4/XB1 controllers. For some reason it seems like 3rd party controllers have a higher range of motion.

The Afterglow Controller I have has a higher range than the Madcatz controller but the Madcatz controller is still pretty high. Also keep in mind I've had the Afterglow for about 5 years now, so I doubt they would have made any design changes to mess with the range but it's always possible.

One more thing, I don't really expect an answer from this but does anyone know anything about this controller? I've been wondering how the range is compared to the original Xbox One controller.

I don't know about Playstation controllers, but I use a 3rd party Xbox 360 controller that works well:

I personally like the Afterglow controllers because they're well built, proportioned correctly, and feel good in the hands. Also, the annoying glow effect can be disabled...there's a button on the back side that changes modes from on constantly, flashing /w rumble, or off completely.

I play both console and PC, there's serious positives and negatives to both but I want to set a few things straight.

controllers, keep in mind this is the equivalent of buying a mouse and keyboard for PC gaming and Alot of PC gamers own $50+ mice/keyboards.

Yes first party Wireless controllers are $50 new, but they're usually on sale for $40 or less wired are $40 new but again usually on sale, I got mine a few months ago for $25

Also there's some decent enough third party controllers that cost less such as afterglow And some that cost a little more This is Xbox prices mind you, they're the more expensive of the two and there's considerably less third party support on the Xbox

Headsets

The best (in my opinion) mono set for the Xbox is $10 But usable ones are as cheap as [$5] (http://www.amazon.com/KMD-Xbox-360-Live-Gaming-Headset/dp/B003A71XKQ/ref=pd_cp_e_0). Stereo headsets cost a bit more at $30 and up but thats the same on the PC too.

I own an Afterglow for Xbox 360. It's a pretty good controller, but I don't like the fact that it's smooth plastic. I get sweaty palms when I game a lot and that makes for a slippery controller.

Now I'm using a Steam Controller for all of my PC gaming. I like it, but it definitely took some getting used to.

Here's a link to the one I use

You do have to manually install the drivers though, so you have to download the regular Xbox controller drivers,

then go into devices on control panel, select the controller, find drivers, then manually find drivers, then you can select from a list of installed drivers (which the Xbox drivers should be included in).

The controller feels like a normal Xbox controller, which is what I'm used to, so I approve.

a brand new Xbox 360 E is $179 delivered, and comes with a one year warranty and a controller. So if you are buying used, I would not pay more than $90, and for that price, it had better come with the AV cable and at least one good wireless controller.

Of the three styles, I would not buy the originals, mostly because they don't have built-in WiFi. The 360 S for $190 delivered is in my mind the best model, as it has an optical audio out port, an AV cable port (can accept composite, component, and VGA cables), and five USB ports. the 360 E has only four USB ports, no optical audio output, and only composite analog video.

Pick one and use that instead of a pc, just kidding, but seriously listen servers are awful for any kind of pvp game especially fps games, I have no problem with matchmaking on dedis like csgo, but fuck me if I have to play cod again on listen servers. (Oh and I know you said dedis+ matchmaking, but separating an already small userbase is never a good idea)

I'm curious though, why do you want matchmaking? It can't be the party system because that works on dedis as well, it can't be that it's easier because it's not, you can easily find a server with whatever gamemode you want if you don't care about the connection which you obviously don't since you want to play on listen servers. Afraid of getting kicked by admins? True, that is a problem, but that can easily get fixed by actually using the favorites feature that every good server browser have.

No.

Yes, it has laughably little storage. So does the $300 WiiU. The xbox360 uses a laptop-size harddrive in an enclosure, and can be swapped out for a larger one with a little effort. The WiiU appears to be locked down.

It's also worth noting that you can easily get a "decent" xbox360 secondhand.

If the quantity and quality of releases is anything like it was on the Wii, $300 is very steep for something which most people will use sparingly for two years.

Ah, I apologize I was comparing it to the price on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B003O6JKLC/ref=olp_f_new?ie=UTF8&f_new=true as mine is brand new. I'm VERY open to offers.

From what I understand, an exchange has to be for a different version of the same item.

For examp'e, if you bought this xbox controller in black, wireless, you can exchange it for a different color, or a wired one, or a different colored wired one.

I don't have any help pages to back this up, but I am like 90% sure.

Do you have a preference for Playstation or Xbox controllers?

For Xbox:

u/theknyte · 1 pointr/pchelp

Xbox 360 wireless controllers don't work that way. The USB port on them are strictly for charging, and not for linking to a console/PC. (Yeah, pretty dumb.) To get a X360 controller to work on PC you need either a real wired controller, or buy the wireless dongle for your PC.

The Xbox One Wireless controllers DO work on PC, by simply plugging a USB cable in.

u/Sieberella · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Very neat contest! Thanks and good luck!

u/ComboBr34k3r · 1 pointr/gaming

Yeah, anything like this will work, just has to be an actual wired controller. Wireless controllers with charge and play cables don't work without the wireless receiver.

u/probablyabadperson · 1 pointr/AskReddit

You just need a wired XBox360 controller.

Check GameStop. I found a used one for $20.

Google: [XBox360 controller driver] once you have it... You are good to go. Many games recognize the controller and even give you tutorials using the gamepad layout. (Dungeon Defenders, On Live games, and more.)

For everything else, get Xpadder (old version free - newest version ~$15) ... you can map any buttons to your gamepad. Really useful for flash games.

u/ferjero989 · 1 pointr/pcgaming

if you want an xbox looking controller.. get an xbox controller. (wired for PC

u/nomemehere · 1 pointr/gaming

Amazon sells a black wired controller for $29.96. I would rather spend a little more for a new controller instead of buying a used, greasy one.

Buy one of these, or one of these with one of these. Nothing beats an Xbox controller.

u/moldyredditor · 1 pointr/badcompany2

Don't know if you knew this or not, but you can get a USB connector to link with a 360 controller, or a controller with a USB cord built in, so that you can play your PC games with a 360 controller.... a buddy of mine does this, can't get used to the kb/mouse combo, but he wants the raw grafical power available on the PC...

Buy one of these. Super Meat Boy plays a lot better on it and it's compatible with lots of other games like the Assassin's Creed series and Arkham Asylum. Easily worth the purchase.

Dude, just get yourself a wired Xbox 360 controller for thirty bones and play around and see if you can get the controls to work well with it (even if you don't end up doing so, you should probably have a 360 controller if you want to get into XNA development) (I'm thinking some kind of dual-joystick scheme, maybe?). I'll be glad to help you test and make sure it works on a 360 if you do :)

I go with the official microsoft xbox controller. It just works. I tried using drivers/usb/ps3 controller, and I hear the ps4 controller can work over a bluetooth module. However, the 360 controller just works, native, no drivers/software needed. http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-360-Wired-Controller/dp/B003ZSN600

TWO COMMON MISTAKES

  • is the xbox360 controller your plugging in a WIRED controller in that it is not battery powered at all? see here. As far as I know a wireless controller plugged into a computer using a battery charger will not work and it must be a wired xbox 360 controller.

  • have you installed the controller driver? see here. From what I remember I had to install a driver before my controller would run.

This adapter

This controller

Works with any of the GTAs I have (all of them in Play Store -- I'm a sucker for GTA < 4). Also allows you to navigate on the home screen of the Nexus 6p/9 and Pixel phone.

Something like this should work too.

u/mepcotterell · 1 pointr/gaming

Yeah, looks the Amazon price for the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver is $33.99 USD.

Also, Xbox 360 Wired Controller is only $29.99 USD on Amazon.

I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but it's relevant.

u/eddie0715 · 1 pointr/Nexus7

Well I have heard this true of trying to connect a wireless controller to a PC because microsoft uses proprietary wireless instead of bluetooth. There is an adapter but then you have such a cable mess.

Here is the controller for <$30 on amazon. I am just getting a PS3 controller because of the bluetooth feature.

u/CosmicEngender · 1 pointr/gaming

Personally I thought they were great. Even though I have a 360 controller, I prefer keyboard + mouse for first-person games. Normally I wouldn't think of playing a platformer without a controller, but I found the default controls on PC to work perfectly and I never had a problem with them. That being said, according to this article you can use a 360 controller with the game. Since you have a PS3 I'm not sure you have a 360 controller lying around but if not I heartily recommend picking one up. If you play a lot of PC games, it's the best $30 you'll ever spend.

u/Dmystic · 1 pointr/gaming

Joysticks are actually very responsive.

You get all the same customization options you would have now.
And I've never seen a FPS game that didn't allow you to adjust sensitivity.
The key downside of the Pad is you have less buttons than the keyboard. Usually in an FPS game this means you can't directly select your weapon(like using 1-9 on keyboard)

Honestly the only way to see if you like it is to try it out for yourself.

I recommend getting a 360(wired) pad

Amazon has em cheap it's 30 -40 dollars which shouldn't break your bank too badly and will let you get a feel for pad without the money investment.

the 360 Wired pads work with PC directly(all you need is a driver) and are fairly high quality (except the DPAD) for a relatively low cost.

u/Karmeretrix · 1 pointr/gaming

u/Jack_of_Shadows · 1 pointr/darksouls

u/SereneWisdom · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I would like to get this from my wishlist. It's not strictly a PC thing but as I don't own a Xbox 360 and I am trying to get into PC gaming, this controller would be helpful. And I'll still be able to use it once I get a new computer next year.

Hello, Goodbye~. And thank you very much!

u/squazify · 1 pointr/pcgaming

This is what I use and it works lovely. It's not third party, so you have that. It works with every game I've tried it on. I use it for platformers and racing games. You mentioned Assassin's Creed which I use it for quite a bit, but you also mentioned cod and BF3. Cod and BF3 shouldn't be used. You won't have a very good response time or accuracy. Chances are you will get trashed by KBM setups on those games.

u/Gammaj4 · 1 pointr/Games

Bam. I just bought this one a few days ago. It works beautifully. It will not auto install, you have to google the drivers, but it's very easy to do, and it'll save you a few bucks over the one with the drivers preloaded. 1. the screw driver to open the controller, most likely will only be available in a kit: Which can cost from anywhere from $10-$25

  2. The recplacement bumper can be ordered online+ shipping is probably another $5-$10

  3. If you unexperienced with opening technology its going to take another 30 min-1hr of your time (Give or take $5-$10 of minimum wage time depending where you live I guess)

So that rings up anywhere from $20-$45 (Approximately of course) in Total.

CPU

The basic standard for a higher end gaming pc these days is a modern i5. Intel’s i5-4440 is the base i5 of their latest CPU release, and will perform excellently.

MOTHERBOARD

Gigabyte makes quality pc parts and this mother board has a modern chip set, onboard USB 3.0 headers and six sata 6 Gb/s ports. Besides the sata 6 ports this motherboard isn’t that feature rich, but it is more affordable board and you will be unlikely to use those extra features anyway.

RAM

A basic set of 1 x 8GB RAM stick. Nothing to fancy but it should do the job well.

SSD

Once you experience a SSD you just can’t bring yourself to continue to let others suffer. The Curial MX100 is a well-reviewed modern SSD that has very good performance. It will make your boot up times super-fast, your OS will feel snappier and anything installed on it will open so much quicker.

HDD

1TB should be plenty of space for a good amount of games. But if you find it is not enough, you will have three open sata 6 ports for plenty of expandability.

GPU

The R9 290 is the best high end “bang for your buck” card right now. Now you could go with a cheaper R9 290 but it might not have as nice of a cooler on it. Sapphire makes some of the best coolers for AMD cards and should perform great while staying cool and silent.

CASE

Corsair knows how to make a good case and the 200R is a great case at a great price.

PSU

A well trusted power supply that will be enough to power the thirsty R9 290, plus as an added bonus, it is semi modular!

Optical Drive

Technically it is entirely possible to go without a disk drive now a days, but I think they are nice to have.

OS

I understand that you already have access to an OS so I did not include it in the price.

Monitor

For 1080p 23” really seems to be the sweet spot, big enough you can see it easily, but small enough that the pixel density isn't to noticeable. One thing to note is that this monitor doesn't have built in speakers, so you would have to use the headphones to hear any audio coming from your pc.

Keyboard

More of a basic keyboard but it is decent (especially for its price)

Headphones

A solid pair of head phones with a balanced sound signature. They should do well for music and games.

Additional thoughts

The only thing I would really consider "missing" is speakers and some sort of game controller. I especially recommend a game controller if you plan on playing either of the dark souls games. If you happen to have a wired xbox 360 controller you can just download some software and simply plug it into a USB port. Or if you have a wireless receiver you can use wireless controllers as well. If you need speakers and a controller (at this budget) let me know and I will tweak some things. Just so you know a wired controller costs a little over $30 a wired is around $35 but the wireless reciever you will need runs around $11.

Let me know if you have any questions!

  • Controller - $37.34

  • Remote - $16.50

  • HDMI Cable - $4.41

Also I didn't look that hard but on most of those I'm sure even better deals could be found. I do see the merit in paying a little extra to get it all in one package and also have the convenience of buying from a store and avoiding the wait for shipping.

If you're after 360 controllers, be sure to use this link instead ಠ_ಠ

u/ImNotATexan · 0 pointsr/gaming
  1. Steam Controller - might be able to maintain some continuity in letting you play mouse-needed games from a controller, but otherwise is a pretty good hybrid that will work for everything and has robust support through Steam, and totally customizable configurations on a per game basis. Also if you have a modern Samsung UHD tv, the Steam Link beta is free (works wonderfully) and the Steam Controller is one of the two controller types it currently supports. $49.99, includes everything needed. http://store.steampowered.com/app/353370/Steam_Controller/

  2. Xbox 360 Controller - Will work on basically every game, but some games - even those with 360 pad support - will be retarded and not recognize it, like Dead Rising 2 Off the Record. Not much to say, it's a great controller. You have to buy the wireless dongle separately, it's usually like $30 for the dongle and at this point I'd say $30 or $40 for the controller. https://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Controller-Glossy-Black/dp/B003ZSP0WW/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1503597208&sr=1-3&keywords=xbox+360+controller

  3. Xbox One Controller - better than the 360 controller, but, despite natively having drivers in Windows 8 and 10, it has a lot of driver related problems. Does not include accessories - if you have an S type or newer controller, they have Bluetooth support. You can only pair one XB1 controller via Blue Tooth at a time to your PC. Wireless adapter accessory is somewhat unreliable - it may not ever work for you, period, might work fine. Controller - $40 if lucky to $70+. I have 3, got one for free, one with console, paid $60 or so for my Gears 4 limited ed version. Also the battery life is kind of terrible, I'd say 30 hours if you're lucky. https://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Wireless-Controller-White/dp/B01GW3H3U8/ref=sr_1_5?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1503597180&sr=1-5&keywords=xbox+one+controller

  4. Dual Shock 4 - I have no experience whatsoever with this controller on PC but it does require a separate adapter for wireless. Personally I don't like the feel of it, it's too lightweight when I have used it and the sensor bar seems pointless. It seems like it's probably solid though. https://www.amazon.com/DualShock-Wireless-Controller-PlayStation-Black-4/dp/B00BGA9X9W

  5. Logitech F310 - Wired but absolutely solid controller, no input delay. The layout is PS2 Dual Shock 2, with Xbox face buttons and PS2 style sticks, but the actual thumbgrips are more like XB360 if I remember right. D-pad is one solid piece like the 360 controller. It will work with literally everything, flawlessly, except games that have hardcoded controls like KOF98 / 2000 etc. The only annoying thing is the xinput/directinput switch is in the place where you would expect the Select button to be on a Dual Shock 2, and the select / start are above that. This can often lead to you changing the input on accident, which will basically screw you in any third person game because both camera and character control will stop working. Also the back of the controller is more angled than the DualShock 2. You should be able to grab one for cheap - they've been around for at least 6 years. Despite the 1 piece d-pad I actually think it does fairly well for fighting games, too. It's well made and can survive a lot of abuse. I've dropped mine, stood on it, dropped it, tossed it, thrown it, yanked it from the USB port on purpose and on accident, and it's in perfect shape still 6 years later. http://gaming.logitech.com/en-us/product/f310-gamepad

  6. Logitech F710 - everything above but wireless, maybe a slight input delay, and it also has a vibration switch across from the input select. Different color, 2.4ghz band. $50 http://gaming.logitech.com/en-us/product/f710-wireless-gamepad

I personally would recommend the F310, if near the PC but the cord is not very long, so more likely the F710, or the 360 controller. I like the XB1 controller but it's battery life is simply unacceptable, and I don't use it enough that I'm willing to consider the sync problems acceptable when I do.

Amazon.ca, I know people can't go one day without sucking some indie shop's dick but Amazon.ca has new for $43+tax and free shipping and sellers starting at $36. Check around your local stores see what the prices are and go from there.

Also doesn't hurt to check a Zellers in your area, they always have super old shit that should have been phased out a long time ago, my girlfriend found a pair of those really nice PSP branded headphones (the new SKU comes with a memory card for $40, fuck that shit), something that's been out of stock everywhere for a long time.

This one.

If you are going to play any flight sims, this one is well rated and looks like it has all the buttons.

This is utterly, completely false. There is no conceivable way you can justify this statement, except to claim that they bought a 72 inch TV for the xbox, and a 17 inch monitor for the PC. Since there are hundreds of monitors/TVs that would work easily with either an xbox or PC, it is irrelevant what they cost, assume the same one is used.

Now, if you can find me a desktop computer including a keyboard and mouse, that costs the same as an xbox 360 and will run Skyrim as well or better than the 360, then I will eat my fucking hat.

[edit] changed it to an xbox available new.

Here is a good one for 30

Bad one for 20

Again, console quality. Consoles are dx9. It's defidently viable. Otherwise, college discounts make windows dirt cheap, and if you get lucky, you may find a windows 7 guy.
Xp is certainly dated, but, this is a 235 dollar build.
