Actually, early candles, the wick didn't really burn at all and people used a specialized tool to trim the wick.
Later, they invented the soft wicks which flop over so that the tip touches the edge of the flame (where it is hotter than in the center) so it actually burns and doesn't need to be trimmed.
The wax actually absorbs into the wick and is pulled up towards the flame.
