For both N3DS and N3DSXL systems

Some of these can also be found from retailers online, like Best Buy and Target. I generally use Best Buy, Amazon, and eBay, but check other retailers just in case.

Case: Looking for a protector that protects your system from scratches? Most people recommend the HORI TPU case. NA currently has one for the XL (LL in Japan), but you'll have to import one for the standard size.

  • HORI TPU case for N3DSXL or sometimes the one from Japan is cheaper.
  • HORI TPU case for N3DS, or just search "New 3DS HORI TPU" and look for the ones without XL/LL in the title.

Looking for a pouch to keep your system from dust or to carry on-the-go and protect them from falls? There's sooo many options you can just search up on Amazon and eBay, not to mention other Japanese import sites.

  • HORI Hard Pouch for N3DSXL is what I went with for my Fire Emblem N3DSXL. Looks plain and I admit I usually go for something different, but when I received it, it screamed good quality. It's black and looks classy, and there's room for 6 cartridges and a stylus. It also fits a system with the HORI TPU on. Alternatively, you can use this for the standard N3DS because it has a strap that will keep it in place.
  • CyberGadget Mint Semi-Hard case for N3DSXL - I originally went for this one. It's fine if you just want to carry around your system, but that's all the room it has. It also had a weird chemical smoky smell that I'm still trying to air out (it's been over 2 weeks now). If the smell ever gets out, I'll use it. Maybe it's just the one I purchased.
  • Trunk Case for N3DS - I have the blue one, and it's decent quality. These trunk cases seem to be in and out of stock though, and prices are unstable. If you can find one for a good price, I'd recommend it.

Screen Protectors: Screens will inevitably get scratched, as careful as anyone can be. If you're someone who cannot stand scratches or want to keep your system in perfect condition, you can't go wrong with screen protectors.

  • HORI Standard Screen Protectors for N3DSXL is what I had on my old N3DSXL. Here's one for the N3DS. Appliance is easy and they don't interfere with the 3D at all.
  • HORI Blue Light Filtering Screen Protectors for N3DSXL and ones for the N3DS - I just wanted to reduce the blue light because I mainly play before I sleep. Research a bit about blue light if you'd like. I like them, they do the same job as the standard ones with the added blue light filtering.

Micro SD card: Can't go wrong with Sandisk, and I purchased the 32GB since that's the highest Nintendo says the system will support. Any higher and you have to format it to FAT32 in your PC so the system will recognize it. Any good brand will be fine though, but I just go with Sandisk all the time.

Stylus: This DSi stylus is so damn comfortable. I never thought it mattered because I just put up with the cramping, but I purchased some items on the Nintendo Online store, so I went for it. It's all I use now. The cheapest shipping is $5 on the store though, so go for it when you're ordering other items with it.

    Customization?
    For N3DS
Coverplates: Amazon.JP if you have a forwarding service like Tenso. I like AmiAmi, but it's hard to catch the plates sometimes. PlayAsia tends to be more pricey, so sometimes you're better off just looking on eBay if your last resort is PlayAsia.

    For N3DSXL and N3DS

Charms: Basically the same as the above. Many options around Etsy, just search what you want up. Up to your discretion. :)

    Overall
Yeah, I'm a HORI fan. Their products have been solid for me, so I have no qualms with them. I just wish more of their products would appear in NA so shipping times would be shorter, but I think the wait times have been worth it anyway.

Background...my last handheld was a Gameboy Color. I have no experience with anything after the original DS. I've been completely out of the loop on the last decade of Nintendo handheld development, so I apologize in advance.

First:

So I'm in the market for a 3DS or an 3DS XL and was just curious if there was a major advantage between the two. I see that the XL has way better battery life and is obviously bigger. Is that it? I'd get a cheaper DS, but it seems like I wouldn't be able to play newer games like Pokemon X/Y.

Second:

I'm worried about that battery life on the XL as it is (quoted at 6.5 hours max) is this your experience as well for playing games on playable brightness and other battery saving options? What do you guys usually get when playing straight from charge to death?

Third:

I'm looking at portable charging options and I see that you can buy a USB cable and would really be interesting in buying a USB battery pack like this. So, would a solution like that work fine? I'm just concerned about getting voltages and amps correct because I know that can be an issue for certain things (I've known people to burn out their phones by using the wrong charger).

Fourth:

Would I be able to play ROMs? For example, would I be able to load up some of the original Pokemon games and play them on a 3DS? Would I have to "jailbreak" it or is it just not possible?

Lastly, any suggestions on good games? Right now I'm looking at Pokemon X/Y/Older, and Fire Emblem. I like some turn base strategy and RPG's but would be open to other suggestions of good games that people seem to like, but might slip though a "sort by popular" search on Amazon.

Thanks for all the help. Sorry for being the noob'est of noobs on the noob question thread.

I use TPU cases for both of my N3DSXL's and another one I had to special order from overseas for my N3DS. They do a good job of protecting the systems and still allow me to see the designs on them since I wanted something clear as I have Monster Hunter faceplates on my black N3DS looks like this, and my XLs are the Galaxy Blue and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate units.

For carrying around, I have an Amazon Basics Case that is small and light and fits in a backpack or purse easily while protecting the whole system. Fits both N3DS and N3DSXL units with the TPU cases on and uses the elastic bands to hold them in place.

For storing at home so they're kept in good shape: I have two of the Smatree Hard Protective Carrying Case which is a much bulkier case, and allows me to keep a 3DS charger with the units if I don't put much else in the zippered pouch on the top half. The inner pouch with the ability to lift it out is an interesting design for keeping the system protected and is a snug fit for N3DSXL's with the TPU case on, but still doable.

Amazon Link for HORI N3DSXL TPU case. It used to be much cheaper, so look around to find the best price.

Amazon Link for the Japanese version HORI N3DSXL TPU case. This alternate link is about half the price for the same exact product that's above.

eBay link for a New 3DS TPU case. I recommend this for N3DS units as the glossy plates are easy to scratch on N3DS units and the plates can be hard to get as it is, don't want them to get scratched when they're hard to find or expensive.

Finally, no matter what unit you get: Always use a screen protector and get one once you decide which system to get to have it ready for when you finally get your system. Some people have waited on getting protectors and have scratched screens day one since the plastic over the touch screen is quite soft.

New 3DS IllumiShield Screen Protector Set

New 3DS XL Tempered Glass Protector Set Note: I have used and recommend the HORI brand, but those seem to be out of stock on Amazon and I'm not sure where to look for it.

Then, there's also GRIPS for the units as they're quite small and thin and quite a few people have problems holding their units. I like the styles from CyberGadget and use their grips, but there's also silicone grips that some people like. You can take off the TPU case on the bottom and put the grip on and just store the TPU case somewhere as you use the top half of the TPU case to protect the top shell of your unit. Obviously, any grip out there will bulk up your system and make them less portable and unable to fit in any of the cases. However if you're at home, it's nice to be more comfortable with your gaming sessions.

The two I'll link are my preferred grips for several reasons: They keep everything on the 3DS accessible as some of the grips are known for blocking off the game card slot and even the stylus, they have a game card door on the back that can store 2 game cards in there, they're easy to put on and take off, and won't scratch your system as they're covered in a rubberized material.

New 3DS Grip from CyberGadget You should be able to find it cheaper elsewhere.

New 3DS XL Grip V2 from CyberGadget I use this every day on the N3DSXL that I play.

I have both the N3DS (Pokemon 20th Anniv. edition) and the N3DS XL (black).

Screen-wise, it's a wash between the standard and XL versions for me. One is bigger but the other one is slightly sharper. Some games definitely look better on the standard size screen. The XL screen might benefit people who plays RTS games like Fire Emblem or games that have small texts and have a lot of small details, like Monster Hunter. The 3D looks more "immersive" on the bigger screen as well.

Regarding the comfort on using the either, it depends on how you hold it. If you like your handhelds rested/buried onto your palms, the XL is for you. If not, the standard might be better. Do mind that I personally find pressing button combinations that use the shoulder buttons (e.g. R + X + A) a tad difficult on the standard model. If you plan to play games that use these buttons, like Monster Hunter and some platformers, you might need a hand grip for it.

Regarding customization, the standard N3DS definitely have the advantage with the faceplates but you can always have your N3DS XL skinned if you want. The other advantage of the standard N3DS is the matte finish, but I personally don't mind because I use a TPU cover for both of them.

To be honest, there is no absolute "better" unit between the two, because it all boils down to personal preference.

I bought these and they arrived today; this is the newer version of the product that you purchased. I had no issues getting them on my analog slider; they may not seem to fit at first glance and first touch, as it does take a bit of pressure and force to get them to fit properly, but after applying a fair bit of pressure onto them they will go on and stay on, and they work excellently (I have an original 3DS by the way (not XL nor new). I don't know if the newer 3DS versions have bigger sliders or not, but these seem to be made for the New 3DS yet fit fine on my old, non-XL version. They are fantastic; I use the grip with the various dots on it, and it really allows me to grip the slider extremely well. I don't have to worry about my thumb sliding off of the slider as I had to do before; using these also has greatly increased the precision with which I can use the slider stick. I can now make very subtle moves of the stick very easily with the grip. All in all, I would recommend the newer version of these grips, as they have done an excellent job of increasing the control and precision I have over my slider stick and have completely eliminated the previous soreness that my thumb would have after a 3DS playing session. I think that they are a necessity for any hardcore 3DS player who plays often.

hey man, that really sucks, i have the Persona Q Limited Edition, and if i paint started chipping i'd be sad lol, but yeah, i recommend you look into getting a replacement shell for your 3DS, if its not too bad and you can put up with it then just cover it up with a case for now, if it gets worse just swap the shell, but it really shouldn't be chipping, unless you dropped it, but i doubt you did since you didn't mention that, if you decide to swap shells then i do recommend you protect it with a nice case, i use a clear case on mine, this is the one i use and lots of people like it :) http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-3DS-XL-Duraflexi-Protector-Clear/dp/B00GX330XW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418450426&sr=8-1&keywords=nintendo+3ds+xl+clear+case&pebp=1418450430522 that case offers great protection, its TPU, so if you drop it then it should be able to take the impact, i won't lie though, it does make it look a little foggy, so you wont be able to see the paint job very clearly, before that case i had a cheap one i got from gamestop, it was a clear plastic case, they sell it for 9 dollars, i actually really liked that one, since it doesn't mess with the clarity or anything.

oh and sorry for the long reply.

u/Zeretha · 1 pointr/3DS

Pretty much any starter kit is just cheap crap. I'd advise you to just spend a little extra and buy quality.

Styli. Basically the only spare bulk pack available at the moment, hence the long shipping wait.

Car charger I would instead buy either a portable power bank and 3DS USB cable or a USB car charger like this and a 3DS USB cable. A power bank would be a good bit more expensive but is really nice to have if you have a lot of electronics you bring with you. Here's a pretty good one.

Great card case holder.

Budget but good carrying cases: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Yes, its more expensive to go this route. But I promise you that you will be happy you did. I bought those crappy starter kits for my GBC, GBA, and DS. The stuff was low quality and generally just doesn't last. I bought stuff for my 3DS similar to what I've linked here and have been much happier with the quality and make

Shovel knight!!

Also some free games that are worth the download

Pokemon pic cross

Zelda pic cross (see here https://my.nintendo.com/rewards)
Can't buy the game. Only available thru rewards program. I recommend you hop on it asap. Free games/themes show up every once in a while)

That submarine battle game (its free on eshop). Best shooting game I've experienced for the 3ds. Sorry can't remember the name.

Badge arcade- almost always get free plays, and you get to decorate your home menu with them.

Also big life pro tip, Play games with headphones.

Also worth it in my opinion (see here--> dreamGEAR Comfort GRIP Protection for your NEW Nintendo 3DS XL https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UJ9LB6Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_rl1lybR9S0F7W)

That grip pad helps prevent hand cramps when playing for a extended period of time.

u/Rufio6 · 2 pointsr/3DS

I use the Hori monster hunter one, but it is massive and pricey. Comfortable though, and sweats better than my other plastic grips.

I'm gonna take a chance on this $8 one from eBay, looks to be one of the slimmer profiles: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Game-controller-Case-Plastic-Hand-Grip-Handle-Stand-for-Nintendo-3DS-LL-XL-EM/292150547574?hash=item4405879476:g:Ti0AAOSw9~5ZQSS9

Otherwise, the Cyber Gadget Grip for $25 is supposed to be great. https://www.amazon.com/Gadget-Coating-Nintendo-New-3DS-LL/dp/B013JDH8J0

I've used cheap trigger grips on my Old XL that worked amazing. Just got my New 3ds XL and its been tougher to find a good set.

u/socaljiujitsu · 1 pointr/3DS

Yeah, I think you'll be happy with it when you hold it for yourself. You can rest easy those concerns about it being too small for someone with big hands.

The balance between the top and bottom pieces of the system is much more even on the standard size compared to the XL and, to me, it's more comfortable to hold especially if I'm playing while lying down or something.

I'm more into the matte finish as well and tbh I really don't care about screen size at the end of the day. 3DS has such a great library but they aren't HD graphics or anything so I don't notice after awhile. I played a 2DS for a couple months and the tiny screens on that didn't really matter to me all that much. (The XL screens make the games look less crisp in my experience.)

When I'm in the mood for great graphics, I play on PS4 or PC.

Also, this might be something you are interested in:

...a review on Amazon says that it's for the old 3DS but is a bit elastic and can snugly fit the n3ds.

u/Tainysi · 3 pointsr/3DS

copy and pasting my old comment. I currently have this one http://www.amazon.com/CYBER-grip-rubber-coating-3DS-LL/dp/B008ZXBYJU/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411403059&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=cybergrip This is an amazing starter grip. The rubber coating is amazing and the texture is awesome, it's also very secure. My only complaint was the first time I held this, I held it like a controller, so both my index fingers were on the shoulder rests thinking I was pressing L or R buttons. To prevent from confusing myself, I put my middle finger onto the rest and my index finger onto the actual L button (i did not do this for my right hand) and thats how I would hold it. Now, I recently stumbled across THIS beauty. http://www.ebay.com/itm/171469999857 I'm waiting for it to come in but it looks absolutely amazing. It looks like the perfect grip for smash and I suggest anyone to buy one as well. PS: It's out of stock atm but if they're out of stock, just message them and they'll relist the item up. Thats what I did. GRAB THESE QUICK, THEY SOLD OUT OF 10 UNDER 2 HOURS

u/poopnuts · 2 pointsr/3DS

I have the Cyber Grip in the video and I agree. It's great for games where the L and R buttons aren't used all that often but the way it's formed, it forces my index and middle fingers into odd positions. Would not recommend it for Smash.

The DreamGear Comfort Grip, on the other hand, is probably the best one out there. It's comfortable and gives good access to all buttons and ports. Mine very slightly obstructs the gamecard slot and charging port but because it's silicone, others may fit differently.

u/dr_pelipper · 3 pointsr/3DS

Do you need one? Probably not. It's more down to how much peace of mind you think it'll give you.

I'm usually pretty careful with my devices, but I got a scratch on the top screen from what must have been a grit of something stuck on the microfiber cloth I normally use. The experience made me conscious of how often I wipe down the bottom screen from using the bottom screen with my fingers, and I definitely didn't want to scratch up the bottom one like I did with top screen.

I got the Hori one for N3DS XL, and I like it. It's not noticeable unless you actively look for it, plus it gives me enough peace of mind. Also while I don't plan on doing so, it is removable though you have to do it carefully.

u/VuxIntruder · 1 pointr/3DS

I've currently got the Amazon Basics 3DS Case, which is a fantastic case for only $10. Fits the 3DS XL quite perfectly and has slots for three game cartridges and accessories. I've also got the Hyperkin 3DS XL aluminum shell, which fits in the Amazon case as well and is great if you want something to protect the console while you're playing it, since the Amazon case (and similar cases) are only ideal for transport and storage.

u/THE_NEWEST_3DS · 6 pointsr/3DS

Those cheap Chinese ones are terrible. The two I bought were barely being held together by the dozen screws in it. Cyber gadget makes a pretty decent grip, but it's quite a bit more expensive. I find that it is much more comfortable than the cheaper versions and has some game storage in the back as well. Amazon

As far as cases... If you want a case to hold the 3ds with the grip installed, the NES classic case is awesome. Just trim out the thin strip of foam in the middle and the gripped console drops right in. Even has room for a charger too! Amazon

Hope that helps!

u/andysaurus_rex · 2 pointsr/3DS

I don't have a ruler, but my hands are about 1 inch loner than the 3DS XL is long. The 3DS XL is 6.3 inches, so my hand is about 7.3 inches. My Palm size is the width of the 3DS XL, so my palm is about 3.7 inches wide.

None of this really matters in my opinion, because neither of them are comfortable. I tried the 3DS in a store, got cramps. I bought the XL, got cramps. It wasn't until I got a controller style grip for the system that I am able to play it comfortably. My suggestion is that you try them both in stores, see which one is better for you. If they're both bad, get a grip like this. I know there is one out for the N3DS LL now, I'm not sure about the standard size. Other companies make good ones too, but the one I linked is the one I have and trust and it works really really well.

u/Votius · 3 pointsr/3DS

Hori TPU case for sure, they are great and wont scratch up the 3ds like other cases. This is the hori tpu case i have, the previously linked case is a harder tpu plastic.

skins you can get lots of places, depends on what you like. I have the zelda 3ds XL and it looks great through the clear hori tpu case, decals/ skins also come though great.

as for flash carts on the 3ds, read this thread from this subreddit

edit for cases

u/ninjapepes · 2 pointsr/3DS

I have the same 3DS but currently have no grips for it. This CYBER one is 25 dollars but I've heard great things about it. I don't personally own it but have been thinking about getting it for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate as it would just make everything more comfortable. However, the system itself works just fine and is way more comfortable than the standard o3DS with its boxy design poking into your palms. The way the N3DS is rounded out helps a lot with playing for extended periods of time. I do have small hands though.

I got the hard case so I can carry it in my purse without having to worry about scratches and it'll hold a few games, stylus, AR cards and cable cord. Only complaint I've seen on videos is there's like a 1/2" wiggle room side to side, but don't think it'll beat up too much in my purse, or can modify it with a little strip of sponge/cushion.

I also got a case for 24 games because I don't like sorting through each game box, and a lot of used stuff I got from Game Stop came in a paper sleeve.

I got an extra power cord so I don't have to keep unplugging it from room to room, but would definitely recommend a USB cable, I'm probably going to get one of those as well, but was sold out when I went looking last week.

I'm sure you can price shop - but that's what I picked up as a new 3DS XL owner!

Edit: OH!! Definitely get a top and bottom screen protector - I got the Invisible Shield or whatnot from Best Buy while I was there, I didn't want my pretty new screen scratched from all the tap tap tapping.

u/Yiano · 2 pointsr/3DS

ALWAYS go for the Hori ones now for all my potables. I used to buy cheap no-name ones but decided to pay the extra one time and I'll never go back.

Fit perfectly, it's very easy to apply them bubble-free because of a smart design and the overall quality is great. They're worth the premium price.

https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Screen-Protective-Filter-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7T8TK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1479020292&sr=8-1&keywords=hori+3ds+xl

Removing them is not easy, but that is the case for all screen protectors.

u/ayakokiyomizu · 1 pointr/3DS

I take my 3DS XL everywhere I go, mainly for the StreetPasses (I try to hit up Home Depot parking lots or go in a Barnes & Noble for those) and the Play Coins.

I did have it in my back pocket, but I didn't realize how much more the XL stuck out of my pocket and I scraped it up a good bit just by sitting in chairs. Fortunately I managed to get a good replacement, and not only do I have the Hori Duraflexi clear protective case on it, but I use this thing as a waist pouch to carry all my stuff in. I've never liked carrying purses, but a waist pouch seems like an acceptable compromise as it's basically a big external pocket. And sitting down is suddenly a lot more comfortable without all the stuff in my back pockets -- I never realized how uncomfortable it actually was until I stopped.

u/ErrorEra · 2 pointsr/3DS

I like Hori products. Get a soft case like this one to help prevent scratches. Please note, it is soft plastic, and if you keep stretching when you put it on/off, the back piece may get loose.

https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Duraflexi-Clear-Protector-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7TC6Y

Screen protectors are a must! Do NOT get matte/anti-glare ones, get HD clear. The anti-glare ones (just like anti-glare phone ones), have a lot of little dots to help block light. This can sometimes mess with the 3d, or otherwise make the screen look grainy. I used the ones that came with this butterfox kit, but I'm sure there are better ones out there. Better cases out there, but very good price for what came with it.

  1. There is a 4GB included with the system and it fills up almost instantly. If you want to go digital then you will need to get a bigger MicroSD. NOTE: Anything larger than 32GB must be formatted to FAT32 before use. You can find a How-To guide in this Subreddits Wiki page.

  2. Yes, it will be on the MicroSD; You can however create a Nintendo Network ID and link the game to it and then when you insert a new SD card you will be able to just download the game again.

  3. I am unsure if you will be able to buy it now without a NNID

  4. You have to create an online Nintendo account and then Link your Nintendo Network ID to that account in order to purchase games online. Yes you create the NNID on the console itself and then link the NNID to the online account.

  5. I recommend Screen Protectors as the stylus that came with my N3DSXL scratched my bottom screen. But it might be different for you. I recommend either a Hori TPU clear case that will protect the 3DS from scratches. Or you can get a Hard Cover that just clips onto the system. I got this Gudetama one for my Black N3DSXL. There are many other designs on amazon, play-asia.com etc.

You can also look into decals that you stick on your 3DS from Decalgirl.com as these also protect the system from scratches.

So it is really up to personal preference
u/FoxxyRin · 1 pointr/3DS

Personally, I use this case. It looks sophisticated and more for an adult gamer, without adding to the bullets that have been aiming right at my wallet lately. Fits into my purse and just looks like a planner/contact book that used to be popular back before everything went in phones. However, it has a magnetic closure and my old XL has a dead pixel. I doubt the magnets were strong enough to cause it, but just in case, I snagged this Pull&Go Folio on eBay. It's a case I've wanted for a long while, but they stopped making them by the time I bought my XL. (And yes, it's supposed to fit the XL just fine -- so it should hopefully fit the nXL just fine as well.)

this is the one I bought, figured I'd literally never need to worry about it again lol. Yeah I really liked the Yoshi XL, I love that green. But would have spent about $30 more dollars after tax and didn't come with a game so M&L is a good second choice :)

u/squirrelyscout · 4 pointsr/3DS

A few different products like these exist, where you place them over the circle pad. You have to be careful to remove it with each use and to not close the system with them on.
You could also completely open up the system and replace the pad with one of your choosing, like this.

Be cautious of using anything sticky, like bandaids or circles of velcro. Some adhesives leave icky residue that's hard to safely remove.

There's really no perfectly safe or easy solution other than pausing your battle and wiping your hand off a lot. :/

u/jbigboote · 2 pointsr/3DS

turn off your 3DS. remove the SD card. Connect it to your computer. navigate to the card, and select everything. copy and paste (or click and drag) the contents to someplace on your computer. SAFELY eject and remove the card, and put it someplace safe. Connect your new card to your computer. select the contents of the old card, and copy/paste (or click and drag) the contents to your new card. once the copy is finished, again, safely eject and remove the new card from your computer. put it in your 3DS. power it on. verify everything is there. if it is, awesome, you are good to go. if it is not, turn off your 3DS, remove the new bigger card, and put the old smaller card back in, and verify it is still good. Hopefully it is, and you can commence additional troubleshooting.

as for which card to get, 32GB is probably the sweet spot for value right now. here is a name brand 32GB SD card sold by a reputable seller for under $21 delivered. There are definitely cheaper options out there, but unless you are prepared to test the heck out a new card before using it, it's easier to just spend a little extra for known quality.

Most people are saying things like cases and screen protectors, but there are a few practical things that I couldn't live without now that I have them.

  • Wrist Strap: I love being able to actually hold on to my device and quickly get it out of my pocket. I've also read stories on this sub of someone trying to steal his 3DS OUT OF HIS HANDS and run away, but he had a strap so it didn't work.

  • 3DS XL Charge Cradle: This may just be because I have a hard-on for docks and cradles. I have a car mount for my phone, one for my phone at home to charge, one for my 3DS, one for my Vita, for my PS4 controllers....you get the deal. I love being able to quickly drop something down and it charges. Cannot recommend enough.

  • 3DS USB Charge Cable: You never know when you want to charge your device, and when traveling it is a godsend. This way you can use the power brick you brought with you for the same as USB charging your phone. That way your regular 3DS charger can be used in that dock I showed earlier...

Also, the 3DS game card cases other people have put on here. Just any one will be fine, so you can put all the cases on a shelf but you have easy access to them later. I put my disc games in a binder for the same reason.

I was able to get a Cyber Gadget Grip on Amazon a while back when they were only like $30. Looks like they only have 3rd party sellers now and the going rate is $75.

I've used a few... and this was the best in my opinion. Good luck tracking one down!

Haven't tried that one but I have this: [DreamGEAR Nintendo 3DS XL Comfort Grip] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008XHCLFO/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i03?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and it's fantastic. My hands used to get cramped after long periods but this took care of that issue. Added bonus it protects the 3DS too.

u/snydeguy · 1 pointr/3DS

I bought the galaxy version, and I got the hori protector: https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Duraflexi-Clear-Protector-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7TC6Y

but honestly, even before I bought that I wasn't having any problems, but I'm also very anal about wiping down my ds every 5 minutes with a microfiber lens cloth.

same as anything, treat it right and it will treat you right :)

u/ruemeridian · 1 pointr/3DS

HORI also makes a Duraflexi TPU case for the n3DS for what it's worth (which is also clear, but textured on the inside giving it an ever so slightly cloudy appearance), not just screen protectors.

And if you're the kind of person who is into pouches, this Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate pouch is pretty awesome I think.

u/SeerUD · 1 pointr/3DS

I have one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/AmazonBasics-Carrying-Nintendo-Officially-Licenced/dp/B0050SVPCO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417990841&sr=8-1&keywords=3ds+case

I know it says for the 3DS, not the XL, but my XL fits in it very nicely, and it's not tight on it or anything, there's a perfect amount of room for it. Just looks at the reviews :)

What's great about it is that it's a hard case.

Unfortunately, it won't hold your charger, but it can hold the console and some games. I think you'll be hard pressed to find one that can hold the charger though.

u/Porkpants81 · 1 pointr/3DS

This is the solar powerbank

This is the cable I bought

The cable is pretty good, the cord is wrapped and good quality plus it came with a pretty large microfiber cloth for the screens

I'm happy with both so far

u/emgirgis95 · 2 pointsr/3DS

Ocarina of Time 3D will keep you entertained for hours and hours. Street Fighter IV is also fun, but gets boring after a while unless you play online. Turn on most if not all of your Streetpass features on, as they don't happen very often (depending on where you live). Download Nintendo Video for free from the eShop, as it has Spotpass updates every once in a while. I also recommend buying this official Nintendo 3DS case. If you don't like a lot of the currently released titles, watch out for some of the games to be released. Have fun with it!

u/NeoMegamanX · 1 pointr/3DS

Oh that looks nice :) might I suggest you to get this protector ASAP?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GX330XW/ref=oh_details_o08_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I got my Dream Team XL somewhere around xmas last year and even though I didn't drop it a single time some scratches formed on the case probably due to dust so I got this protector, it's a beauty not bulky at all and it looks amazing.

u/joosen · 2 pointsr/3DS

Since I have a pretty decal, I use this to protect and show it off. I always have it in my hand, like the girls who hold their clutch purse thingy.

If I'm in a Kingdom Hearts or Monster Hunter mode, I just remove the bottom part of the protector, and snap on my CPP and continue my day

u/Togetchi · 16 pointsr/3DS

For another $2 there's an Amazon Basics 3DSXL clamshell case. I love how it comes with three cartridge holders on the flap, but it would be nice to have more on the other side of the clamshell too.

I've used mine for 2-3 years and not had any problems. It's been dropped, scraped, tossed in bags, and other normal wear-and-tear and looks as good as new while keeping my 3DSXL safe and sound.

u/Grumpydumpling · 2 pointsr/3DS

For accessories, I got this case and I can say it's the single best peripheral I've ever bought. I got it cuz it was cheap and it said it fit the XL nicely, and since I've started using it, I've dropped my console, my cats knocked it around, I've sat on it...and it's still in great condition! I also chuck it in my bag frequently to carry around, and the hard shell keeps it nicely protected from all the other things I just throw in.

With games I'm not very adventurous. I got the console on my birthday last December, and since then I've acquired 4 games in total. Pokemon I got with it, Animal Crossing was another gift, and Harvest Moon: A New Beginning and Harvest Moon: A Tale of Two Towns I only got 2 weeks ago. I love AC but it's the sort of game where if you don't like more laid back "play it how you want" sort of games then you won't really appreciate it.

u/hehehehoho · 8 pointsr/3DS

If you have a lot of devices and you can think of a couple of occasions to "need extra battery" for smart phones, tablets, or other devices, too, my suggestion would be to invest in a bigger USB external battery.

I personally have a pretty intense one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008YRG5JQ/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And you can pair it to adapt to your 3DS with any to USB cable, such as
http://www.amazon.com/Charge-Cable-Nintendo-3DS-DSi-XL/dp/B0024ZT3XO/ref=pd_sim_sbs_vg_3

I personally use this kind of set up to get around conventions like PAX and in the future, festivals and other things :)

I just got back from Istanbul, Turkey a few weeks ago. I took my 3DS with me and used it for the majority of the time I was in an airport or on a plane. When I was in Istanbul, I chose to keep it locked up in my hotel room safe. Did I miss out on some Streetpasses? Maybe, but I'd rather have that happen than have it accidentally damaged, lost, or stolen. I was spending a lot of time in crowded areas where it'd be easy for someone to walk off with my bag if they really wanted to (it was an outdoor sports festival of sorts). It seemed smart to leave it behind, and I was still able to get Streetpasses on airport travel days.

As far as accessories go, here's what I traveled with:

  • Amazon 3DS XL case: allowed me to toss it into my bag without worry; it's inexpensive and holds three games

  • ZaggSparq: I got one of these three years ago and just bought another one. If you travel at all, I'd highly recommend one.

  • USB charging cable: I was able to spend about 10 total hours (and could have gone longer) playing my 3DS without plugging into a wall outlet because I had this cable and my ZaggSparq. I was then also able to charge my 3DS via USB and didn't even bring the original charger.

Also when you're traveling, don't forget to buy plug adapters for the different outlets, and make sure everything you'll be plugging in supports 120V and 240V, or else you'll need to buy a converter in addition to an adapter.
u/trippybrii · 8 pointsr/3DS

I recommend this case I have it and it is just amazing. All my games fit perfectly and can easily be put in and taken out (unlike the gamestop one which is a big square 2x2).

u/Hedzx · 2 pointsr/3DS

I recommend this: http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-3DS-XL-Duraflexi-Protector-Clear/dp/B00GX330XW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1414888273&sr=8-2&keywords=hori+3ds

Since you have a special edition you don't want it to get scratched! Also get some screen protectors, I think Hori makes some. 3DS screens tend to scratch themselves (even though supposedly the problem is fixed, don't risk it, trust me.)

As for other accesories, if you find that the XL is too awkward to hold on certain games (though you might grow used to it like I did) try getting one of these http://www.ebay.com/itm/Plastic-Hand-Grip-Holder-Gaming-Case-Handle-Stand-for-3DS-XL-Black-/190970632021?pt=US_Video_Game_Cases_Bags&hash=item2c76bc9755

They're pretty cheap and sometimes can be finicky to take off (use a card to push up the tabs, I learned this the hard way haha), other than that they are amazing for making games comfy. Other things include a club nintendo game case off ebay (or if club nintendo restocks) like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Club-Nintendo-DS-3DS-Card-Cartridge-Case-Holder-18-Limited-game-New-/161467848495?pt=US_Video_Game_Cases_Bags&hash=item25983bd72f

or one of the other ones.

u/Bortjort · 3 pointsr/3DS

This is my favorite case for the 3DS XL, says it's for the DSi XL so you can get it really cheap and fits the system and games perfectly. The "leather" actually feels surprisingly nice, one of the better feeling fakes for sure. Inside is your typical soft case material. It's thinner than many of the zipper designs and probably protects a little less, but if you're throwing it in a bag the size is great.

u/Rampey · 4 pointsr/3DS

I recommend getting a clear dura-flex case for your 3ds, it's not that expensive and allows you to protect your 3ds from scratches and hand sweat without covering up the awesome design. link
You can also find this case just about anywhere in-store too incase you don't wanna wait for shipping.

u/pikachuuuuu · 2 pointsr/3DS

Do you want like a carrying case or one that actually snaps onto the 3DS to protect it?

For the former, I have this and it works really well. For the latter, most people recommend the clear Hori case.

I used this generic hard plastic case for a long time and really liked it. They come in a variety of colours too if you do some searching. It says "rubberized" but it's not rubber at all, just slightly transparent hard plastic. I recently switched to this one (also available in a variety of colours) and it looks really nice, but it makes the WiFi act funny if I'm too far from the router.

u/Dad_of_the_year · 2 pointsr/3DS

Not OP but this is the one I bought.

OP's looks much nicer, but for $20 this one works great for me, I have large enough hands to palm a basketball and they never get uncomfortable with this grip. It comes in 2 separate piece so I left the top cover off and only use the bottom part.

u/FatMagic · 1 pointr/3DS

I purchased this case from Amazon - actually created by Amazon (resold, whatever). It's a really great case and affordable. I really like it alot. I don't have many 3DS games, so carrying just 3 games is perfect for me. Check out the video review if you want to see it in action.

u/Excellus · 1 pointr/3DS

This one?

It's made out of TPU.
TPU is kinda like a hard rubbery material, it feels really nice and won't scratch your 3DS at all.
The case you linked will fit the TPU case and your 3DS, I have a case like that and it fits perfectly.

u/AnimageCGF · 1 pointr/3DS

I bought this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Coating-Nintendo-New-3DS-LL-Original/dp/B013JDH8J0/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=n3ds+xl+grip&qid=1565613534&s=gateway&sr=8-4

I don't remember paying nearly the cost of them now, but everything about it is pretty great. If the price is too much, just look for something with similar dimensions. I hardly play my 3dsXL without it now.

u/tangyteng · 2 pointsr/3DS

32gb class 10 works perfectly and is faster.
This is the best deal

most games are about 1gb,
Memory is so cheap nowadays that you can afford to get the best.

u/scottyb83 · 8 pointsr/3DS

This. is the case I am talking about. Very happy with it as I wanted something a bit rubberised and not hard plastic. This is still a little firmer than I wanted but it does the trick. I also wanted something clear as I really liked the 3DS XL I got (Gold Zelda edition) so the fact that it was see through was a big plus. I don't know how well it will protect from a drop as it is very form fitting but it protects the finish and offers a little bit better grip. If you have bigger hands get this case!

I can't link the hard shell zipper case that I got as I got it in store and can't find it online but it is your standard hard shell case with a little padding in case you drop it.

u/mejjos · 0 pointsr/3DS

Glad to help. There's also this Amazon.com exclusive one, looks pretty similar to the Hori one. The price is great and it's available in both red or black 👍

u/CaffinatedOne · 2 pointsr/3DS

I had to find it

Play Asia
Seems to be out of stock until June

Amazon In stock, but massively marked up by the reseller.

I've been using it for awhile and it's been great. It's solidly built, comfortable, and the triggers are useful.

The reviews are accurate that it's really bulky though, so it's not going in a pocket or anything. When I travel, I carry it in my work bag, so it's no big deal, but that's about the only big downside that I've seen.

u/drastik25 · 3 pointsr/3DS

If you have carpal tunnel issues make sure you pick up something like this when you get your 2DS https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013JDH8J0/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2HCJ9YB0QY49W&coliid=I1AB7KFHK6KS0Z

I don't have carpal tunnel but with adult hands it's a pita to hold it without any kind of extra grip. This particular brand is generally considered the best and it makes it so much more comfortable to play for longer than a few minutes.

New Nintendo 3DS question

I'm looking for a case for my New Nintendo 3DS (not the XL version, got that sweet 20th anniversary Pokemon edition). I had my 2DS screen cracked on a flight in my bag before so I'm not taking any chances now and looking for a hard case for those kind of trips, ideally one that I could throw the charger into as well, though not necessary.

Only problem: I tried looking on Amazon for a case and literally every New Nintendo 3DS case is designed for the XL edition, and most reviews say that it is a bit too big for the smaller editions. See this AmazonBasics case as an example

Does anyone have any leads on a nice case for travel? I already put on a hard shell as well as a screen protector.

Thanks in advance

u/Heavykiller · 1 pointr/3DS

As said, I think they kind of fucked up on the whole mesh pouch.

The best part of the art is on the back side of the flap and this is terrible as you either get to look at 3/4ths of the moon or get to look at everything else, but eventually stretch out the pouch. The pouch being stretched out is my main concern as right now, it may be fine and dandy to leave it on the 'top', but after holding that weight for so long it's going to slowly stretch it out. Next thing you know, if someone opens it with the pouch on the top, the N3DS is at risk of falling out.

I really like it, but I feel like they made a fatal flaw here. I might just end up using this one to keep my old 3DS XL safe and use the AmazonBasics 3DS Case for my MM N3DS XL when I go out. I've yet to find a case that matches this in quality, protection, etc. aside from only being able to hold 3 games max(4 if you count the cartridge in your 3DS).

It's an awesome little LoZ case for sure, but just that little 'design flaw' is what holds it back for me.

u/Kenigs · 1 pointr/3DS

That case definitely seems rugged but a bit too bulky for the bags I use to travel when I'm out, but definitely looks like a good choice for a carrying case.

I used to use this DSi XL Leather Case and it worked really well and was compact, I only stopped using it because I just made backups of my games onto my 3DS so I didn't have a need to have a carrying case.

u/Tsasuki · 0 pointsr/3DS

Really surprised I haven't seen the Cyber Gadget grip 2 in this topic yet. It feels amazing, very nice material and really ergonomic. The 3ds feels locked in place but pretty easy to remove by pulling the clip. It also has a compartment for holding 2 carts and the "door" of the compartment doubles as a stand.

u/Bkxjku · 1 pointr/3DS

Aside from the screen protector they are all really optional

You can go with any screen protector, I got like the Hori ones

32GB SD card

r4ids.cn R4i Gold(the firmware may not be updated when shipped so you may need a pre v4.5 3DS or DS Lite to update it) and Micro SD to hold the DS roms/saves/r4 firmware. 8gb is plenty

For Cases

Full 3DS Case or This Travel Case

A circle pad pro XL if you buy a game that supports it is nice, other things like a 3DS usb charger cable + external battery pack if you need the juice for trips are handy.

But aside from the screen protector which I highly recommend the rest are optional.

u/godshammer915 · 2 pointsr/3DS

I really liked that grip but if you play a lot of games that use the shoulder buttons, I found the finger grips on the back to be a bit too high and puts your hand in an awkward position. That being said, I prefer this model for every game that doesn't the shoulder buttons much.

If you do play a lot of Monster Hunter or games that use the shoulders a lot, try this one Cyber Gadget Rubber Coating Grip 2 Black For Nintendo New 3DS LL XL https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013JDH8J0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_5le0xbBSRD90R They moved the finger grips a little lower and makes it a more natural grip.

If your main concern is comfort, I highly recommend a grip. This is the one I have and it is amazing. Extremely comfortable.

Something to think about. Unless you find a person interesting in trading, I doubt you will find any store willing to do a 1 to 1 trade.

u/IgnoreMyName · 1 pointr/3DS

Was debating getting a 2XL or a refurbished N3XL for me and my sister but found a new N3XL for $175 on Amazon. $50 more than getting two 2XLs but, brand new, 3d feature is there if needed, better speakers, and longer battery life (several reviews have mentioned 2XL has shorter battery life).

So, I'm on the hunt for some accessories and was wondering if ya'll could help me pick some out.

Charger Will need 2 of these.

  • Is there a difference in charging times between the wall charger and usb chargers?
  • Difference between charge times using usb chargers when plugged into usb wall charger and PC? Would one charge faster than the other?
  • In one of the reviews for the Yuyikes USB charger, someone asked about the difference between it and cheaper usb cables. Someone replied that the cheaper ones only charge while the DS is asleep/off while it can charge while playing. Is this true?
  • Using a USB cable, can you transfer things back and forth between a PC and the DS? Be it the system it self or a microSD card?

    Charger | Price
    ---|---
    Wall Charger | $8
    HDE 3 Pack USB | $8
    HDE 2 Pack USB | $5
    Yuyikes USB | $8

Screen Protector Will need 2 of these.

  • Does the system close properly with screen protectors installed on the top and bottom screen?
  • I ask because someone people have mentioned their N2dsXL having a tiny gap with screen protectors.
  • If you use one, which do you use personally?

    Brand | Price | # of Pairs | # of Reviews | Avg Score
    ---|---|----|----|----
    Hori | $9 | 1 | 1758 | 4.5

Here's the protective case that I have for my 3DS. Overall it has a -very- snug fit and is made out of very soft silicon.

The outside of the case has cutouts for the game card slot, the cameras and red eye light, charging port, volume slider, wireless slider, shoulder buttons, and the headphone jack. The 3DS slips in to the top section which covers most of the top portion with cutouts for the speakers, inner camera and the 3D slider. The bottom section has two flaps that slip over the corners and leaves most of the inside open so that there is no silicon covering the d-pad and the buttons. Make sure to check the cases you're looking at because many of them lack cutouts for essentials like the cameras or the charging port or have a full silicon sleeve for the bottom section that covers the d-pad and buttons.

As for carrying cases I would suggest anything from Hori or Power A. Both brands have large selections and pretty decent build quality. I'm thinking about getting this travel case from Power A. Right now I'm stuck with the one that came included in the Pokemon Black DSi bundle. Nothing says elementary school better than padded plastic :)

EDIT: Too tired to type properly and be coherent. PSS, do you have a link to the silicon case you were looking at? I'd like to compare.

Congrats on getting the $99 3DS! I just barely managed to get one myself, haha. I was slightly paranoid just carrying it around the store before checkout with how crazy people were acting. =p I bought this case for it at Gamestop. It was clearanced out for next to nothing if they have them at your nearby store. It fits the system perfectly and has a very professional look to it if you're interested.

I use the bottom of this case when I know I'm going to be playing a while. It makes my 3DS XL much more comfortable to hold for long periods of time. It is a bit bulky on the bottom for the hand grips though. It's relatively easy to take on and off if needed as well.

Cyber Gadget Rubber Coating Grip 2 Black For Nintendo New 3DS LL XL https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B013JDH8J0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_icbsDbQF3Z577

I bought this one about a yea ago. It's an excellent grip, feels comfortable, has a nice smooth rubbery feel and it detaches very easily. Just hold the tab at the back and lift 3ds out.

u/Chokaay · 1 pointr/3DS

Had the same issue as you. Bought several grips (including the DreamGear) but this is easily the best one (read the reviews and you'll see): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013JDH8J0/

I bought the original version (before they came out with a smaller more compact version). Now I can play for hours without cramping. Worth every penny.

u/j0nnyboy · 1 pointr/3DS

Hey. I HIGHLY recommend this. I experienced hand cramps often with the 3ds XL and the NN3DS XL until I got this. If you like the feel of the PS4 controller then this should have that same familiar, comfortable feel.

u/TheDoktorIsIn · 2 pointsr/3DS

Honestly it feels great but getting it off has thus far been impossible. Dreamgear makes a good one but I think the best one similar to this is this one. The dreamgear one is more like an overall case, and some people say they have to cut the flaps near the l and r buttons. I consider myself a savvy consumer so maybe I just chose poorly here or got a defective one, I don't know.

u/LanAkou · 3 pointsr/3DS

With the inevitable influx of new people come October 3rd, and especially with the release of the Smash 3DS XL, it might be time to update the FAQ's Case/Battery Pack/Grip thread (there are only 4 parent comments, and all appear to reference the original 3DS)

What are the best clear cases and grips for the 3DS XL?

Based on the little research I've done, the clear Duraflexi protector seems to be the best clear case for the 3DS XL. It protects from scratches, not impact and is not perfectly clear but is probably as good as it gets. Other cases have been said to scratch the 3DS.

u/Nlopez108 · 1 pointr/3DS

I use this case for my new 3DS. It's meant for original 3DS but the new one still fits fine. It has space for 2 games and the build quality is pretty good.

I love this grip, make sure you get the right one for the XL or NEW XL if you got that. Might help, more natural to a real controller.

u/Saint-Baconator · 1 pointr/3DS

I just bought this one yesterday and got it in the mail today. I must says, I wish I would have bought this a long time ago. I have been playing Pokemon Sun for an hour or so and it is really comfortable. Usually an hour on game play starts to bother me. I now feel like i can play for extended periods now.

u/SabinMoon · 1 pointr/3DS

I've used a few different cases in the past, but the Super Mario Transporter by PowerA is hands down the best one I've gotten.

It can hold 20 DS/3DS games.
And it holds my 3DS XL with the DreamGEAR ComfortGrip attached to it just fine And it still has room for the AC/Car chargers and styluses.

It also comes in Black, Red and Blue. I chose the black one because it still looks cool but is more discrete.

u/doyouwantaballoon · 1 pointr/3DS

Ooooooh that one! I got it on Amazon also. It's actually a Dsi XL case but it fits the 3DS XL perfectly. Even with the clear Hori duraflex protector. Here you go.

u/retrogs · 1 pointr/3DS

This carrying case

And this charging cable

The charging cable can use any usb power source and fits nicely into the case. It's great, especially if you already have a bunch of phone chargers around. Streamline things a bit. The case will also fit some earbuds and 8 games. I tried to find the smallest possible case that fits a 3DS, charger, earphones, and games. This case will fit an XL or regular size but it's really not that big. Also, that cable comes with a microfiber cloth as an added bonus.

u/dick_wig · 1 pointr/3DS

This baby has been awesome for me. One morning I rolled my 4-wheeler and I swear I had to have smashed my xl, but upon inspection all was well! I would carry it around in a dusty tractor all summer and my xl stayed in perfect condition. Also, it holds 6 games!

u/Dave_here · 1 pointr/3DS

Oh man, I'm already in love with this thing. And to add to its beefiness I purchased the Dreamgear comfort grip which pretty much makes it feel like a console controller. It's a little pricy but damn it sure is dreamy. As long as you're not carrying it around in your pocket a lot I HIGHLY recommend it.

Buy these for grip. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UURTXK6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

They just clip onto the top of your circle pad.

I just bought them and they seem to work well for grip. Make sure you put them on CORRECTLY, otherwise they will fall off. I use the one with the dots on my N3DSXL. My circle pad was slippery as well. This is a huge improvement.

u/jrockz · 1 pointr/3DS

I recommend one of these:

[Ref] // [Non-ref]

I bought one a few weeks ago and it is really amazing quality for the price. It does the job well and I can carry it around much easier than a normal nintendo 3DS charger.

u/cdavis7m · 2 pointsr/3DS

Like people are saying, you can use any old USB battery power bank. 3DS compatible USB cords are available on Amazon and eBay.

I use this one: https://www.amazon.com/YUYIKES-Charging-Nintendo-Microfiber-Cleaning/dp/B00MVN9NPW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1484682451&sr=8-3&keywords=3ds+charging+cable

It works fine and it has metal braiding around the outside so you can worry less. It's also pretty long. Long enough that you can set the power bank down and comfortably play with plenty of slack. I recommend against the 3ft cables for this reason.

u/Archnation · 1 pointr/3DS

I did the same but I REALLY didnt like how far you had to move your fingers up to use the shoulder buttons. Heres the one I bought. I ended up buying some Poly clay and making it more comfortable to put your index fingers on the shoulders, middle fingers on the black original cyber grip part and your ring fingers on the molded portion.

Heres a picture of what I did - Bonus picture of my cat & Ike in his white alt color in SSB4

Sorry for the potato picture.

I basically molded it to my liking then baked it attached to the grip at a lower-than-recommended temperature (about 170-185 for over an hour. I placed it on a few wine bottle corks that were placed on top of a glass cooking container thing I turned upside-down.

Then I sanded a little bit and remembered I hate sanding poly clay so I stopped and now it is lumpy but comfortable.

u/Uncanny_Doom · 1 pointr/3DS

My sister has one of these and it looks top notch.

On the subject of Nerf Armor, I've heard they aren't that secure and like Nerf material typically does, it breaks away after time.

If looking for grip/comfort over protection, try this. Fits very comfortably though it takes some getting used to using the triggers due to the bumpers the grip has.

Either way I'd recommend looking up some video reviews on grips/cases to get a better idea of your options.

u/RHunterGN · 1 pointr/3DS

The Cybergrip /u/Whirlspell posted is good. I have that and the MHX one. The Cybergrip holds the 3DS a lot more steady. I found the MHX isn't a perfectly snug fit. However, the MHX one is much more comfortable. It's hard plastic, but fits the hand a whole lot better.

u/clambert12 · 7 pointsr/3DS

I really like this grip. It's super easy to attach/remove and fits comfortably in my hands. Also it can store two cartridges inside a compartment on the back of it, which is pretty neat.

Edit: My issue was slightly different than OP's. I would get really bad wrist pain while using my 3DS and this alleviated that problem. I'm not sure if it would be helpful for OP's issue, but thought I'd link it since I ended up buying 3 different grips and this was the most comfortable one for me.

u/Sexytimeturtle · 2 pointsr/3DS

I tried roughing the surface on mine as I found games unplayable with the default circle pad. It only helped marginally. The caps are a godsend and the best solution.

u/OpenlyCray · 1 pointr/3DS

http://www.amazon.com/Circle-Pad-Cover-Nintendo-Accessory-Inport/dp/B00C1XYUY6 You want these, trust me. They give me a sense of safety while I play, like my circle pad isn't going to get damaged, and the give you a better grip at the same time. Takes a little bit of force to get on and off at first, though.

u/tonyjin · 1 pointr/3DS

Could try the brand new Cyber Gadget slim grip: https://www.amazon.com/Cyber-Gadget-Rubber-Coating-Black-Nintendo/dp/B01KWUNRV6/ref=dp_ob_title_vg

I'm currently deciding between that one, the monster hunter one (https://www.amazon.com/Monster-Hunter-Cross-hunting-gear-Nintendo/dp/B016XCSBC2/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1481064584&sr=1-1&keywords=3ds+xl+monster+hunter+grip), and the wider cyber gadget one (https://www.amazon.com/Cyber-Gadget-Rubber-Coating-Black-Nintendo/dp/B013JDH8J0/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1481064457&sr=1-1&keywords=cyber+grip+3ds+xl). I bought all 3, going to return 2 of them. So far I'm probably sticking with the monster hunter one since I have large hands, but I wish I could stay with the new slim grip since it's super compact and can hold two games in the back.

u/wet_ninja · 1 pointr/3DS

I bought two of these on Amazon and my daughter and I have both been using them in the car:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MVN9NPW/

They're well-made and work great. They can charge while playing, too (some of them can charge only in sleep mode). As a bonus, they're long enough that they can reach from the charging port under my car dashboard all the way to my daughter's 3DS in the back seat.

u/smokeyjoey8 · 5 pointsr/3DS

I have the Monster Hunter Generations N3DSXL grip.

It's big, but comfortable. My only problem with it is that one of the shoulder buttons doesn't feel very responsive, but it still works. Mine was $40, and I feel like it was worth it, especially if you play Monster Hunter. If you have the money and you're looking for a big, comfy grip, you can't go wrong with this one.

u/qua2k · 2 pointsr/3DS

thank you for this, i was thinking about getting the dreamGEAR one but didnt like that it covered the whole 3DS and you couldnt access the game cartridge slot. this solves everything.

It's a great case. I pulled it out at PAX East and my friends thought I was carrying around an N-gage. It looks hilariously too big to carry around but it's comfortable!

u/endlightend · 9 pointsr/3DS

I use this one. Works great for me. My hands are on the larger end and used to cramp like crazy playing without a grip. They have a slightly rubberized texture to help you grip and conveniently has a cart holder slot for two games, as well as a little kickstand to prop the console up. Highly recommended.

u/salvu667 · 1 pointr/3DS

This is what I use. It fits a 3ds xl, game case and a charger in the main compartment. It also has a few zipper pockets that can fit smaller objects like a screen wipe or a few extra stylus.

u/SupaStaVince · 1 pointr/3DS

I get asked this a lot. Short answer, don't worry about CPP. I get by just fine without it, hell I don't even use the digital D-pad. The L button is all I need. CPP is overrated as a primary imput. If you need camera controls, the C-stick will work just fine. A lot of people don't even know how to use it properly which is where all the complaints arise from.

I normally tell people to get a Wii U instead of a NN3DS if they already have a 3DS and if they don't have a 3DS, to get the NN3DS. But if your main issue is simply holding the system rather than being a matter of deciding what to buy, get a NN3DS and get one of these. http://www.amazon.com/CYBER-grip-rubber-coating-3DS-LL/dp/B008ZXBYJU

I heard good things about em. Hope it helps.

u/SenordrummeR2 · 1 pointr/3DS

I use the Hori Duraflexi TPU case to protect my FE N3DS. My only complaint is the case makes the 3DS look off-white instead of white. Other than that it's been great. When traveling, my laptop bag has a pouch that's the perfect size for my system. The top of the system barely sticks out of the slot, so I can easily check to see if I've got any street passes or notifications.

u/mobott · 48 pointsr/3DS

As a fellow owner of the Zelda 3DS XL, I highly recommend that you get the Hori TPU case and some screen protectors to go along with it.

No matter how careful you are, your 3DS is bound to take some degree of damage eventually. This case does an excellent job of protecting it from normal bumps and wear (it won't do much if you drop it, but that hopefully wouldn't happen) while still showing off the design. Screen protectors are just good to have.

An additional note: I also suggest getting some sort of cleaning cloth to put between the two screens when you close the system: the bezel on the touch screen will scratch up the top screen.

u/bohoa · 3 pointsr/3DS

I love the Cyber Gadget 2! People with small hands may find this a bit too big. They have an updated version in the link that's smaller.

The Monster Hunter XX is very well liked by many too.

This Grip is hands down the best accessory I've bought for the new 3ds. Best part is, it doesn't block anything on the 3ds itself! You can close it with it on, access the game slot, charge it, etc.
Couldn't recommend it more personally.

u/Golmin3 · 1 pointr/3DS

Heres an Amazon link for the black 3ds that is actually cheaper than the white one. Also the faceplate is quite nice

And here's a link for the white one, this one you're probably going to need another faceplate for imo, but the second one that is included is not too bad.

I personally would suggest checking at your local GameStop/eb games, Best Buy or something along that line before buying it off of amazon. But if you can't find it anywhere you should try and see if there is anywhere else online you can get it cheaper while it's still new.

Edit: One thing you're going to have to keep in mind is that the new 3ds never comes with charger cables. If I remember correctly.

u/newbatthis · 12 pointsr/3DS

That's... so weird. Just keep the cartridge. It has resale value. You never have to worry about being unable to play it.

I say just get a nice game case. I got this one from Amazon recently for my growing collection.

u/Mkilbride · 1 pointr/3DS

How are these hard plastic cases for protection? Something about them seems like they'd add a good bit of weight to it and be uncomfortable.

Something like this seems to be the best of both, once upgraded for the New 3DS XL.

http://www.amazon.com/dreamGEAR-Nintendo-3DS-XL-Comfort-Grip/dp/B008XHCLFO/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1421488045&sr=1-1&keywords=3ds+xl+grip

u/toodlebutts · 3 pointsr/3DS

The link provided there isn't a grip, it's a Circle Pad Pro for the original 3DS. You already have a C-Stick on the New 3DS, so it's pointless even if it did fit.

Either https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WU8EEAC/ (which I bought) or https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OTEMTD4/ are considered the best ones. There are pros and cons to each.

The first one doesn't have a cartridge slot open to pull your carts in and out, meaning you have to take the grip off to change physical cartridge games. However, it's more comfortable to access the triggers than the second one.

The second one is generally the more popular one despite being more expensive. There's room to carry two extra games in the back stand, and isn't as hard to take off as the first grip. However, the positions of the "fake triggers" can be confusing and uncomfortable for when you do actually want to use the 3DS triggers.

u/ChrisC1234 · 1 pointr/3DS

I use the DreamGear grip also (http://www.amazon.com/DreamGEAR-Nintendo-3DS-XL-Comfort-Grip/dp/B008XHCLFO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367375474&sr=8-1&keywords=dreamgear+3ds). It's got a good feel, and is very easy to install and remove.

An added benefit of this is that it covers up most of the blinking lights, so it doesn't light up an entire dark room. They can still be seen through the trip though. And the message light is not covered up at all.

u/BlueBlurDown · 2 pointsr/3DS

Interesting, that glossy feature is what made me think it would be far worse than my Pikachu. Since my Pikachu was fine naked, that would mean I should fair well with my MM naked.

I have a Hori case for the N3DSXL, but I'm not a big fan. I can't use the charging dock or a proper sleeve. It's pretty much the case and that's it. I much prefer a proper sleeve like Waterfield.

u/thesk8rguitarist · 1 pointr/3DS

I always keep mine in this case. It's seriously the most comfortable thing you can get to play your 3DS for any extended time (makes Smash WAY easier to play) plus, it protects it from my rambunctious toddler.

u/Tizzysawr · 2 pointsr/3DS

I like the HORI ones, like this one. They fit 24 games, have a nice form, and are sturdy enough for what they're meant to do.

Carrying case, or something that fits around the console? Since you said ergonomic, this is the gold standard for the latter:

It's been said already, but the lack of great games, and the proprietary memory card are the two main downfalls of the Vita. I actually think they could get away with the high pricetag of the console if not for those two issues.

The memory card issue baffles me, because the Playstation 3 was so great about not being proprietary in any way. It had a standard HDMI output right at launch. It used a standard USB cable for connecting and charging controllers. It used standard bluetooth headsets for voice communication. Even their DSLR cameras give you the option of using a Sony memory card, OR a standard SDHC card. Then on the Vita they decide to go and restrict it to only their overpriced proprietary memory cards.

and the memory card is an even bigger issue when you consider the lack of great Vita exclusive games. Aside from Persona 4 Golden, I wouldn't be interested in playing much on the Vita besides Playstation Network games such as PS1 classics. The memory cards being so overpriced is a barrier keeping people from buying a Vita and loading a memory card up with an entire collection of their favorite Playstation Network games.

It's so ironic, because I always see people here on /r/3DS recommending the Sony 32GB Class 10 SDHC memory card (a mere ~$20) for use in the 3DS to buy and download a ton of eShop games. Sony is directly limiting the amount of PSN games they sell to Vita owners by price gouging the memory cards for their own console...and at the very same time producing a product that allows their main competitor to sell more digitally distributed software for a competing product.

good thing is this adhesive is removable (though there are some traces but can be removed easily) so that you can adjust the thickness until it feels right. the way to apply it is like applying a thermal paste, but way smaller

edit: the circle pad silicone is glued to the housing but since the silicone is flimsy, the glue is somewhat flimsy as well. should be easy to rip the silicone apart

I got my NN3DS XL at the end of March for my 23rd birthday, and it still looks as good as new. Absolutely no marks or scratches, etc. It's had screen protectors since pretty much day 1, and this case protects the shell. I also keep it in this case when not in use. I use a microfiber cloth to clean the screens when I change the screen protectors (only done that once so far).

I'm not sure because I use a plastic case so I don't get fingerprints on my 3DS. I know there are padded ones if you want that kind of protection.
But if you're looking for travel cases I recommend looking on Amazon. They're reasonably priced and they've got a good selection. For example, this one is reasonably priced and has a lot of good reviews.

I don't have a better recommendation than the other link for a collection that large. But I can say, don't buy those 8 or 16 game cases that are available at Best Buy or Target. They're a huge pain in the ass to get the cartridges in and out of. The elastic band type that you slide the cartridge into are much easier to manage. The only snap in type that seems to work well is the official HORI 24 game case. I have a couple of those for storing stuff long term. Games I actively play are in the elastic style holders.

Another advantage of the elastics- they also hold DS and Switch and Vita too.

If your hands are cramping up (like mine always have when playing handhelds), you might want to look into a grip. This one in particular has helped me so much with being able to play my N3DS XL for more than 25 minutes or so at any given time.

It seems like you're referring to both the size (hand cramping) and button quality. The buttons have never been an issue for me. I like that they're bigger than the Vita's at least.

As far as sizing goes, it all comes down to personal preference. Some will tell you they prefer the portability of the N3DS, the colored buttons, and the slightly sharper image on the screen. Others will tell you that they prefer the XL's larger size and don't mind the decreased portability or the slightly less sharp resolution. It all boils down to what you're looking for in your 3DS experience, I guess. I'm a N3DS XL man myself.

u/KalN7 · 1 pointr/3DS

I believe it's this one - http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004K6LQAS?cache=198dcc535e585ce1babde1094dc2bf91&pi=SY200_QL40&qid=1406081290&sr=8-1#ref=mp_s_a_1_1

It's a great case and it does the job. Holds 3DS and DS games securely and they're not difficult to remove. But after seeing those cool club nintendo cases I want one.

And if you're asking about the console case, it's this one - http://mobile.walmart.com/ip/Mario-Universal-Travel-Case-Nintendo-DS-DSi-3DS-3DS-XL-Nintendo-3DS/30914324?type=search

My XL fits pretty snug in it and it holds up to 8 games. I like it, but I'll probably purchase a case that's more plain and less bulky down the road.

I am extremely pleased with the setup I have to fully protect my Solgaleo/Lunala Black Edition XL.

Screen protector - https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Screen-Protective-Filter-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7T8TK

System protector - https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Duraflexi-Clear-Protector-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7TC6Y/

Carrying case - https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Pokemon-Moon-Hard-Pouch-Nintendo/dp/B01J3Z5OC6/

It was around $40 all said and done, but easily worth it to me.

I think this is the one you're referring to. It's pretty great. Basically turns it into a Playstation controller.

In my opinion best case for protection/value....

I don't ever use the charging cradles, so can't help in that respect.
Don't really get the point of them, especially at the price they are.

Yeah. It’s got more expensive since it first came out (when I bought it).

This one I used before the grip I mentioned. It worked pretty good:

The USA standard 3DS size was released as a special edition on Black Friday in 2015 or 2016. I can't remember. No idea why Nintendo hasn't supplied more since then. But they are a real thing and they do exist.

https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-New-3DS-Super-Mario-Black/dp/B01MFAWPRA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525094358&sr=8-1&keywords=new%2Bnintendo%2B3ds%2Bblack%2BFriday&th=1

It's been marked WAY up, but used it's not as bad. Keep in mind that this was a special $99 Black Friday deal plus tax. But that's BLACK FRIDAY where everything is crazy cheap, so I think the used price on some of these is pretty fair.

Amazon listed them for pre-order about 30 minutes ago.

Note: Not a referral - I don't earn anything from the link. Just want to lend a hand. :)

I have a Hori game case that holds 24 of 'em. Amazon page here, though it's also available in other colors (I have an entirely translucent one).

Good quality, should last a long time if used properly (don't just push the cartridge in from the top, slide it in pushing against the inner tab. It has a slight amount of give to it to prevent breakage).

I also have one of those same cheap Chinese ones and you're right - the tabs on those break easily.

Same here, you might be able to save some money by asking Amazon to pay for shipping. They covered next day for me.

This is the cheapest one with possible free shipping from Amazon

When that one's gone, it'll be up to $27.90 for the next 20 units
