First step, download the Roku App on your smart phone, then pair via Blutooth to the TV (easy to do). Then, go to "expert settings" on your phone (in the Roku App) and make sure Gamma is set to 2.2 (or if you're viewing in a bright room, change it to your preference).,

To calibrate the TV, start a show to watch, then press the "*" (Star) button on the Roku remote (to the TV). You can now change the settings.

I watch most shows on Brighter, Vivid now, but I do change it up from time to time since the TV and remote make it quick and easy.

My settings as I posted in a review on BestBuy:

My Calibration settings:

Gaming (make sure "game mode" is on):

Bright game like NHL 19: Bright, Vivid.

Dark area in Witcher 3 or Battlefield 1: Dark, HDR Bright

Bright area in Witcher 3: Bright, HDR Bright

Bright area in Battlefield 1: Normal, HDR Normal (changed to Bright, Vivid recently)

Netflix Shows:

Darker show like Lost in Space or Luke Cage: Dark, HDR Bright

Brighter show like Disenchantment or Castlevania (or other 4K cartoons): Brighter, Vivid

Stranger Things: Normal, Normal, or sometimes I do Dark, Normal.

Youtube:

Bright 4K video: Brighter, Vivid

Normal 4K: Bright, Normal

Dark video like Sea of Thieves 4K or under the ocean: Dark, Normal

Sports:

Bright, Normal (I have noticed the "Sports" picture mode doesn't look good)

If you are wanting to "set it and forget it", then just do Bright, Vivid and it works great in most modes.

Also, in Advance Picture Settings you can change the Micro Contrast. Change this setting to your liking.

Also, check reviews on Amazon or other sites to get other calibration settings. I use these because these are what I prefer and they look great.

Edit:

Here is an example of additional settings provided off an Amazon review:

"Normal can produce really flushed faces unless the color setting is turned down - but also produces the sharpest most accurate picture in my opinion. Note: I believe these setting are pretty much the default settings except I turned down the color a bit.

- TV Brightness: Bright during mid day, darker at night (2 easy clicks to change) - or just keep it on Normal. * This TV is more than bright enough for bright daylight viewing. Saw some complaints that it's not very bright. It's more than plenty bright!
- Picture mode: Normal
- Audio effect: Theater (sound's not that bad - but by no means as good as a sound bar). I also have it toslink connected to an older 5.1 Denon receiver - sounds great).
- Backlight: 100
- Brightness: 50
- Contrast: 100
- Sharpness: 0
- Color: 42
- Tint: 0
- Temp: Normal
- Micro Contrast: Low
- All other setting turned to Off (noise reduction, etc.)

Love the picture coming over cable, antenna, and streaming. HDR on YouTube is stunning. I mostly use the TV to watch Cable TV. Don't have any streaming subscriptions. The picture is very clean, sharp, accurate color, deep blacks, etc. No complaints. Getting around Roku is a snap, and changing settings and all is very intuitive. So far so good, and it is the best TV I've owned. Price is great for what you get. "

Keep your eye out for the new 5 series as well. Just to make the choice even tougher. Sorry!

From TCL: "The great features added to our S405 on our new 5 Series include Support for Dolby Vision, Wide Color Gamut, as well as picture performance improvements such as our iPQ Engine and HDR Pro Gamma, all wrapped in a great new cosmetic design!" The 49" is on Amazon, the 55" should arrive shortly.

Personally I'd go 5 series or 6 series. 6 series might be $599 at Best Buy if we get lucky and have the option of a lesser remote = cheaper price again this year. And the 5 series will be about $499.

Thanks for the heads up. After much research, I am pretty set on the TCL 55R617 TV here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079N9HDNQ?tag=rtings-tv-bs10b-20&ie=UTF8

Is the 200$ price difference worth it for the 6 series over the 5 series? What is the difference between the R615 and R617? I'm looking to be "Wowed" by the improvement in HDR content over my current Sony TV which will be migrating to the bedroom.

From what I've been reading from others, TCL quality control is much improved during the second half of the year and I already have Amazon prime so unless anyone knows of a cheaper price elsewhere (Black Friday or Cyber Monday) I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the TV linked above.

Also, I plan on wall mounting this TV and would appreciate recommendations on an inexpensive mount that will work with this TV.

Thanks

NU8500 is a good TV if you are getting a great clearance price on it.
Newegg had it for $619.99 but has since sold out. At that price it's a good deal, but at closer to $1,200 there are better options like the LG OLED B8

Here are rtings.com top recommendations for 55 inch, though sometimes the model numbers change in different countries.

u/pwnedkiller · 1 pointr/4kTV

Here you go $782 for a open box Somy 49” X900E Amazon warranties are really good if you aren’t happy with it I’ve heard great things about amazon warehouse when it came to TVs.

Sony XBR49X900E 49-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV (2017 Model) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N284JCN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_q6OEAbMGYYSGM

u/dsignori · 2 pointsr/4kTV

I understand. I bet lots of folks will pop in here and give good recommendations. The TCL 55R617 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD seems to get lots of love as one of the best values around also.

u/ForTheB0r3d · 1 pointr/4kTV

This may not be as relevant but I figured I'd chime in. Last year I was just shy of pulling the trigger on a 65 inch 850D, which was (I believe) around $1800 pre black-friday. On BF it dropped to $1300 for a $500 savings. I figured maybe I should wait until right before the superbowl because TV's go on crazy sales then too and if it went down to the $1300 price again, I'd buy it.

So around January 20th 2017 I check prices again and it was actually only dropped to $1500 for a $200 savings. I was pissed. But in retrospect I'm glad I waited. Now, I'm keeping my eyes on the XBR65X900E, which is way better in comparison especially since the new systems will support 4k gaming.

Anyhow, the current price of the XBR65X900E (on BestBuy) is $1800 (dropped from $2500) for a $700 savings (According to the site). But since you saw it at $2k 2 months ago, and they are shaving $300 off now, I'd wager a guess that it will drop to $1500 for black friday for a $500 savings from the price you saw it at....

This may help you: Check out the price chart on camel camel camel

I know it only gives you AMAZON prices; however, its a good indication of where the TV started out at ($2500) and price drop intervals. It looks like every 3 months now the TV will drop in price so Black Friday should be your best bet.

Awesome thank again! Would you say the TCL 6 series is worth the extra money over the TCL 5 series?

Also do you know what makes these two TCL 4ks different?

TCL 43S425 43 Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart Roku LED TV (2018) ($250)

Samsung UN55NU8000FXZA Flat 55" 4K UHD 8 Series Smart LED TV (2018) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079NBMTWY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_huGACbYWFPDH4 the Samsung 55 inch 8000 series for 897$

I’m less familiar with the Vizio models but they are also similar price ranges. Overall I’d say TCL is cheapest and provides great price value and has Roku, Samsung is pricier and Vizio again idk but all three are wayyyy more credible and not necessarily more expensive

u/sk9592 · 1 pointr/4kTV

I'm sure that the Sanus mounts that the other guy linked are good. They usually are.

I would also recommend the mount I use:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D3TSFR4/

It's not as slick as the Sanus mounts, but it is much cheaper and it works well. It also stays pretty close to the wall when not extended.

u/winkmichael · 1 pointr/4kTV

None of these monitors are the highest spec'd out of sony. as an example the x900e vs the 905e are quite different, however if you are looking for the best 'value' i'd get the 900e.

Just a note see the price difference for the 930e below. Similar models but very different screens. http://www.avsforum.com/forum/166-lcd-flat-panel-displays/2762449-sony-930d-vs-900e.html

If you are upgrading from an older panel or heaven forbid a CRT, you'll be happy with any of them and if you have a really big room get the panel that fits the room.

u/WaidWilson · 2 pointsr/4kTV

I haven’t seen it drop lower than $1299, no, but if you’re willing to give amazon warehouse deals a chance they’ve got the 65” X900E for $1275, I personally bought my 900E from them and it arrived brand new, the box had just been removed. Plus their customer support is the best.

I would 100% buy a 65” 900E over a 55” 900F.

u/Birkin07 · 2 pointsr/4kTV

I think I'm going with this one. Been looking for a few days. HDR 10, 4K 49 inches. 33 ms input lag with HDR on. Looked gorgeous running a demo I Best Buy. In my budget. Hope price drops by November!

Rtings.com best sets under $500

If you can stretch to $650 $629, the 55" TCL R617 is your best budget option.

u/unndunn · 1 pointr/4kTV

Save a little bit more, and then get this. Best budget TV available right now.

u/danbfree · 3 pointsr/4kTV

That's why I like to use a swiveling tabletop stand even for larger sets instead of relying on the TV legs, even when you do have a good flat wide surface already. Gives plenty of flexibility for sound bars and swiveling the picture directly towards you more for slightly varying seating positions.

This kit works well on my nu7100, lots of mounting options

you can get long (2.5"+) bolts and plastic washers and make them the right size, but this kit comes with everything that you will need. Also, it can extend 2 feet from the wall which is nice. I can turn my 50" tv a full 90 degrees

also: not an ad, I was just looking through the sub

u/Lazerpop · 1 pointr/4kTV

Oh! I think I got it. So the TCL I'm thinking of doesn't have the nicest HDR and I totally accept that I won't get the most amazing picture ever for $300. But simply having the television on in the daytime near a window won't render it impossible to watch, yeah?

edit -- Just another thought... it seems like to stay within this size range but get a noticible picture bump, I would have to spend at least $100 more, right? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MYGISTO/

u/pattycakes999 · 2 pointsr/4kTV

Another option is the Sony X800D, $650 for the 49 inch model, gets slightly lower rating as the Samsung on RTINGS.com for some things but equal for gaming and 4K HDR. I have one and I'm happy with it.

to be honest, nah, it's a mediocre tv, but here's what i'd recommend

TCL S517 (49")

u/Shadow8580 · 1 pointr/4kTV

Keep in mind the 6 series at bestbuy is a bestbuy specific model which leaves out some features compared to the 55R617 sold elsewhere when comparing price. It is not apples to apples. Good price fore the 55" 55R617 6 series right now on amazon i just ordered 1.

> Size should be either 43 or 49 inches. Can't go bigger than that because the stand the TV is on is small and wouldn't support anything larger (unless the TV's footprint is smaller, like on some Sony TVs)

You could probably go larger if you look at models with a center stand, as opposed to the legs at the corners. Not sure on your budget, but you can look at the Sony x930E which has a center stand on its 55" model, that would likely fit. Can also look at the LG OLED 55

I gotcha, well I hate to be the bearer of bad news you could have gotten then new 4K stick straight from Amazon for about the same price. New refurb.

I am exactly on the same boat. If you look at the price of 49" X900E last year (https://camelcamelcamel.com/Sony-XBR49X900E-49-Inch-Ultra-Smart/product/B01N284JCN), it dropped by $100 around black Friday.

What's the input lag / response time?

How's it compare to the 6 Series? The only thing that turned me off about the 6 series is that it's edge lit LED instead of Backlit like the 2017 I linked.

You di not need to pay so much for the Sony necessarily. You can buy it from Amazon for $1,398 ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MUG21R7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_FGnizbDHBWHK8). Not sure where you live though so maybe it is more outside of the US.

> The B7A will cost you an extra 2k

You can get a B7A for $1500 without even shopping around - that's what it is selling for on Amazon. If you look a little bit and price-surf Amazon Warehouse Deals you can get one for $1200. I just got a 55" C7P - the same model, essentially, but with Dolby Atmos - for under $1500 last month.

Sony used LG OLED panels. Get an LG. The Sony OLEDs are a massively higher price for practically nothing. They're a terrible purchase because of this.

You people are dumb.

The LG B8 is $1,500.

The A8F is $2,300.

A built in sound bar and slightly better processor does not justify 800 fucking dollars.

Identical overall rating from Rtings, and the Sony doesn't even score much higher in sound quality.

u/BL24L · 2 pointsr/4kTV

Yeah I saw this on amazon,

LG Electronics OLED55B8PUA (2018)

https://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-OLED55B8PUA-55-Inch-Ultra/dp/B07DRRYS1W

Really tempted. It's a 2018 model but for the price I can live with it. Still, it's on the high end of what I want to spend and I game so I'm always worried about burn-in. Had a plasma and I think I spent more time worrying about burn in then enjoying the tv.

I'll take a look at a few of those suggestions.
