Look up mindfulness meditation. It's about observing the world around you without making judgements, noticing things you never normally notice because you're wrapped up in your own head. Once you start observing without judging you'll find yourself a lot calmer and happier. It's easy to always automatically put anything you perceive into categories of good or bad but it doesn't make you any happier. I'd recommend the book Positive Intelligence by Shirzad Chamine if this is your goal.

The problem with pokies is that they're fundamentally designed to be as addictive as possible and to take as much money from people as quickly as they can get away with under the laws they're given. There's an interesting book, called Addiction By Design which goes into the sheer number of ways that pokies are designed to take advantage of people. It's pretty dry, but good if you're interested in that kind of thing.

My issue with them is that they're designed to take advantage of people who have a problem, and frequently are those who can least afford it. At least other casino games have some level of skill and entertainment about them.

This is not really similar, but my favorite author is in the broad sf genre, and a lot of the classic sci-fi writers (Asimov, Clarke, etc) were big fans. He’s kinda hard to categorize because his stories were a mix of science fiction, magical realism, Native American tale tales, and Catholic mysticism. It’s been said that he is the best there ever was at whatever it is that he did. Most of his books are out of print, but there’s a best-of collection coming out later this week: https://www.amazon.com/Best-R-Lafferty/dp/1473213444

Time and Space by James Coventry is a great history of the evolution of the sport from a tactical and rules perspective, and there's an ebook version since you'd be unlikely to find hard copy in the US.

There's an entire book on this that was recently published. Not a bad read, he literally interviewed every American that's every had a chance at AFL.

I used to reflexively dismiss radical rule change proposals, but my attitude on them has shifted a lot since reading Time and Space, by James Coventry, which is a history of Australian Football's rules and tactics.

It made me realise that

  1. rule changes have been a constant feature of the game from its very inception.

  2. all rule changes, even ones we would now consider absolutely vital to the nature of the sport, had to deal with enormous opposition from people who thought they were stupid.

So I'm less likely to dismiss proposals for new rules out of hand in the way I used to.

That said, I reckon this particular proposal is pretty stupid.
