When my kids became teenagers Christmas was boring; they asked for a gift and got it. Yawn. The following year I gave them money before Black Friday and told them that was their Christmas gift. They had to shop for themselves, wrap it up, put it under the tree and on Christmas and at least we would be surprised. It was awesome. They bought the greatest stuff for themselves; some was inappropriate (my youngest bought something called Liquid Ass then told everyone who was horrified "My mom got that for me for Christmas".) They loved it. We've done it for about 5 years now and it is fantastic. I still do stockings and my husband throws a few boring gifts like jumper cables or tire chains under the tree but this works great for us. I realize I should demand they make a wish list but this is more fun for me, so we will keep doing it until it isn't anymore.

I also tell family members to buy my kids memories instead of items. Tickets to a show or a dinner out or other event don't have to be stored and are always appreciated.

As someone who is constantly on the road and also a full-blow fan-while-I-sleep addict I have to recommend the Marpac Dohm-DS.

It's "real" white noise caused by the movement of air, but can be packed extremely easily. Trust me, it saved my life and marriage.

HEY! do some research, take the proper steps and it can be an excellent option. Investing about $30-$50 in a decent transmitter will do you a lot of good. I have had this one for at least a year now and haven't a single issue. There are a couple models that might be better, mine is kind of outdated. If possible, disconnect your radio antenna if you don't ever plan on listening to the radio (such is my case).

Find an obscure channel to broadcast on (the transmitter should find one good enough) and it should come through crystal clear. I have an outlet in my console that the transmitter is in, set to the channel, and my radio never changes stations, so I every time I get in my car my phone wirelessly connects to the transmitter and Spotify begins playing. Haven't listened to the radio in ages, and it's wonderful. I never touch the thing but it has some pretty cool call features too.

Edit. I live near Detroit and there are plenty of stations around that give me no problems.

u/hydrottie · 4 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

OK I totally forgot about these. It hooks into your fm antennae input. Pretty easy if you can do basic mods like drilling a hole for the switch. .. I suggest running it to your aux switch slots that most trucks have. Take pics of the interior if i don't make sense

http://www.amazon.com/iSimple-IS31-Antenna-Modulator-Aftermarket/dp/B002U5XPBE/ref=sr_1_1?s=car&ie=UTF8&qid=1449797521&sr=8-1&keywords=Fm+bypass+aux

I bought this and then this app. Total was $25 for an OBD II scanner that resets some codes as well can display cool and useful realtime gauges to Android devices about all kinds of your car's performance readings.

I see there are other cheaper ones now, but I've used these 2 and know they work great together.

u/AndersBakken · 4 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

This is actually the optimal way to drive. Every bit of road should be used. You may seem like an asshole if you're the only one doing it but ideally everyone would do it. It leads to better traffic flow. Source is somewhere in here:

Jeez you guys are lazy. Just go to Amazon and type "bidet" ha.

Having said that, this is the one that I bought. It works perfectly and is one of the best purchases I've ever made.

I quit smoking about a year and a half ago and simply read this book ----Allen Carr's Easyway to Stop Smoking----It was a huge help and honestly I was a non smoker as soon as I put it down. You can give it a shot and im sure it will help you out.

If you can stream from a smartphone with Bluetooth, some of the Bluetooth FM transmitters are actually quite good. There typically isn't all the noise and static, maybe due to the lack of a wired connection.

something like http://smile.amazon.com/GOgroove-FlexSMART-Bluetooth-Transmitter-Hands-Free/dp/B003PPGOC0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1415140781&sr=8-2&keywords=bluetooth+fm+transmitter

Make sure to download a sound equalizer app and adjust to your liking as well, it can make a world of difference.

I've got this one, it works great. I have to occasionally change the station I pick it up on when I travel long distances but it transmits great sound quality I think.

u/Tullay · 0 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Good for you :) I'm at 6 weeks myself. I know it sounds like bs, but I would recommend Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking.

For the first, a wash cloth and some soap (or toilet paper, water and soap if out and about).

For the latter, try this. Hands-down one of the best purchases I've ever made. It's like being having-taken-a-shower clean every time I drop a deuce (or if I just need a quick refresh on those hot summer days).

u/bruinblue25 · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

I was a smoker for fourteen years. Quit smoking after reading this book. Good luck and congratulations!

u/RedTib · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

Install an FM modulator

The difference is that the direct input bypasses your antenna and plays your music on a certain frequency. In an FM transmitter, the transmitters uses the antenna.

In my experience, the sound quality is very excellent.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

Yes you can. Unless your body is magically in sync with the earths rotation, you can certainly sleep whatever schedule you like. Get good curtains to block out the sun. If you need, get earplugs or a sound conditioner:
http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Dohm-DS-Speed-Sound-Conditioner/dp/B000KUHFGM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1376083903&sr=8-3&keywords=sound+machine

and go to bed early, and get up early. You can easily change your schedule. It will suck for a few days, but it is easy to do.

u/TheDiceToss · 8 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

I believe it varies, based both on personal preference & the type of bidet you are using. My wife & I use a model that just attaches onto the bowl itself (http://amzn.com/B003TPGPUW). I spray without wiping, then dab with toilet paper: both to dry & to make sure I'm truly clean.

u/forever_pdx · 2 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

I read THIS, and it works. I was totally skeptical, but /r/stopsmoking had lots of other people in there saying how great it was. Once you really grasp the concepts laid out (ex: smoking is a drug addiction akin to heroin use) it makes it easier to WANT and to ACTUALLY quit.

u/JDawgSabronas · 2 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Have one of these? 110% recommended; I've convinced half a dozen friends to hop on the bidet train.

u/turbodonk3y · 5 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

u/Grindstaff · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

Do yourself a favor and read this

You will see smoking in a new way and you really will wonder why you smoke. The guy who wrote it was a 60 a day man and actually tells you to keep smoking while you read the book.
My only regret is that I didn't read it a long time ago. Go on, give it a try :)

SOURCE: I smoked for over 30 years and stopped after reading 1/3 of this book. No pangs, never went back; feel great.

u/echoshield · 4 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking: The Easyway To Stop Smoking I quit the day I finished reading and haven't even wanted one since. Other than the day I hung out with old friends I hadn't seen in years and we spent the night drinking, I had about 5 that night, I have been smoke free.

u/ravennaMorgan · 35 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Yep, the book Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We Do does a good job explaining this. Regardless of whether you feel it's fair to merge at the end it is faster for everyone and when people try to block people from merging or merge way early it creates backups that can echo for miles.

u/theploki · 9 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

I think you want this. Hardwired to your car, you just connect power and ground and whatever antenna adapters you need for your specific vehicle. Get a red/white to 3.5 mm cable and you're golden. Turn it on and tune your radio to whatever frequency you select on the unit (I think there's only 2). I've installed a few for the exact purpose you state and they work pretty well.

u/octopoddle · 2 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

You can buy things like this (you can get them cheaper on eBay) which diagnose the fault with your vehicle and tell you what's up. They send the readings to your phone. You want to get the right one for your vehicle. (I don't have one of these yet, but reviews suggest they work pretty well.)

u/DeadZeplin · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

They get a power and ground, then you unplug the antenna, plug this in, and the antenna into this. Then you tune to a preset, channel, and plug into your new aux jack

They aren't motorized, they use the pressure from the water pipe to shoot the water at your poop hole. I have one similar to that and it works fine. The heated ones seem nicer, but cold water won't hurt you and it'll wake you up in the morning.

They make hard wired fm transmitters that are for people like yourself. Goes in line with the antenna and you plug it into your phone (or bluetooth). Like this It physically cuts out the antenna and directly connects your phone with a flip of a switch. You just need two Volvo antenna adapters.

Bluetooth versions generally work with Android phones. They will not work with iPhones, however.

I bought one of these that works fairly well with an old Galaxy SII phone. I use the torque app to read live info and codes: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NLQAHS

u/jyank_ · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

I have this and it works great. Plugs into the cigarette lighter and then I Bluetooth to the adapter. My understanding was that the poor quality of older FM transmitters is mostly due to the physical wire connection. The difference with this Bluetooth one is night and day.

I bought this bluetooth reader off Amazon and the Android application "torque".
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005NLQAHS/

Not only does it let me read and clear codes, but it gives me all sorts of real-time information which is cool but useless to me since I'm not tuning my car (vacuum/boost, rpm, timing advance, fuel flow, throttle position, intake temperature, etc.). Not bad for like $30 for the reader and the app.

u/SomethingDota · 4 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

When it's off, it's off completely. No dripping. I advise not doing what I did when we first got it, which is turning it on without actually being seated on the toilet. The spray is forceful enough to hit the wall across from the toilet. Shocked the snot out of me, because I was expecting a gentle water fountain-esque thing like is in the packaging's photo. Nope.

No, that's not what bindered copies means. They're gonna be page for page copies of the textbook. In any case, if you shop early, the hardcover can be had for less than what you just imaged.

The notion that race is purely biological has been debunked for years: http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2013/05/what-we-mean-when-we-say-race-is-a-social-construct/275872/

For instance, one of the major works of both history and critical race theory in the last decade Is this book: How the Irish Became White which points out that the Irish and other groups we wouldn't hesitate to call "white" were considered a separate (and inferior) race for decades.

Race is not purely biological, and there is no scientific taxonomic distinction between homo sapiens sapiens.

u/spock84 · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

Logically, smokers shouldn't have to be told, because they are the ones who are polluting their surroundings by introducing a smelly health hazard to the air, and are therefore grossly inconsiderate. To illustrate this point; as a non-smoker, I don't expect that it would be okay for me to stand next to people and pollute their air with this. Or would that be cool with you smokers?

Besides, smokers that smoke around people are usually inconsiderate to begin with and are not likely to respond well to being asked to stop or move.

u/too_spicy_for_soros · 2983 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Hey guys, this is the textbook - as you can see, it is really $950 for a used hard copy.

Reddit loves to fact-check, so I'm sure you'll find that you can buy the looseleaf version for $160, but if you check the reviews you'll see that it's been printed with no diagrams, making it almost useless (this is confirmed by someone I know irl who bought it for the course. This is also the version that our bookstore carries for $200, amazingly). You'll also see that you can buy the online version, which is nice, but for fluids you need lots of tables to use during tests and since having laptops open during tests is too much of a liability, the professor only allows hard copies of the tables for tests.

I'll be using a pdf version of the book (not one from Amazon, that's all I'll say...), and printing out the tables for the tests. If I'm not allowed to do that I'll just drop the course, because there's no way in hell I'm buying the $950 hard copy like she is pressuring.

Oh, and here are screenshots of the course syllabus showing that we do actually need the book, and yes it is only for a few weeks (4 actually, not 6 - the first 6 weeks are with another book which is sold for $215 at our bookstore)

u/PhilosoGuido · -1 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

What a condescending, fact-less, fallacious response. Allow me to retort:

> Spying on citizens- bad, but we all know that.

I love how casually you blow off totally violating the shit out of the 4th Amendment. It's fools like you that open the door for the dictators that overturn democracies.

> Forcing people to buy health insurance- a democrat concession to the republicans to pass a healthcare bill...

Really? Nice story but totally wrong. Did you read any news during the debate of this law? It was a concession to the Moderate and Blue Dog Dems who aren't completely sold on socialist single payer yet. It's no concession to the GOP since not a single one voted for it.

> Unelected Bureaucrats- We couldn't possibly have informed elections for the literally millions of government employees.

This is the dumbest rebuttal you made. Congress and the Executive branch have created dozens of massive federal agencies such as the EPA, FCC, IRS, FAA, HUD, etc, etc and abdicated their authority to them. These agencies have become a virtual 4th branch and have assumed the power of all 3 branches within themselves: (1) to make regulations, (2) to enforce them, and (3) to adjudicate their own regulations. The fact that you don't understand or appreciate the impact of this demonstrates your astounding ignorance. No one is saying to elect every Federal employee (nice moronic straw man). But the amount of recourse the citizenry has to influence these agencies is woeful and violates the intent of the Constitution.

> 175,000 pages of federal regulations- A made up number. Also, what kind of regulations? What severity? What do they apply to? What's so inherently bad about regulating?

Made up number, huh? Look it up genius. I assume that Google works on your end too. In fact the Code of Federal Regulations has increased by 11,327 pages from Jan 2009 to Dec 2011

What is so bad? Tons. Obviously you have no experience in business. You Statists love to demonize companies outsourcing, but take no responsibility for making a climate that drives them out. More personally, the legal environment has become so complex that you probably commit 3 felonies a day and don't even know it. The Soviet Union had a similar system. In fact, Lavrentiy Beria, Stalin’s head of the secret police, once bragged, “Show me the man, and I will find you the crime.” This topic exceeds the current forum, but may I suggest reading this book:

> Abusing Power- completely unrelated to the system of government. This is a fact of human existence.

Yeah, therefore it's a great reason to give the Federal government LESS power not more and to decentralize as much power back to states and local levels.

> Nothing you said requires "socialism"

Except for the $1.8T entitlements that you ignored, plus the fact that socialism requires an virtually unlimited centralized national government of which all the previous were examples. I'm guessing you don't know what representative democracy, limited government, the Bill of Rights, consent of the governed, or separation of powers means since you have so much contempt for them. Obviously you went to school with a mind full of mush and let your America hating, propagandist professors program you into their ideology which you now follow blindly.

>I'm irish you stupid idiot.

You're still racist. Like a Celtic Uncle Ruckus.

>Sorry I'm not a billionaire and can jet-set around the world

I've only been to Canada.

I do have a library card, an Internet connection, a high school education, and basic people skills though. That's all one really needs to realize you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

>Did you know that they just threw chinamen at the TCRR until it was done?

"Chinamen"? That's some vintage racist shit.

>There are a lot of Polish people here too.

But you don't know anything about them because you have the people skills of a mole rat.

>Your hostility proves the un-popularity of this issue. Mr. Genius.

So one the fact that one person disagrees with an opinion makes it unpopular? Well, I guess there are no popular opinions then.

Again, read a book.

EDIT: Read another book too.

ah, you're looking for the statistics. i can oblige.

>Do you not see how the welfare system correlates at all?

nobody sees how the welfare system correlates at all. it's a non sequitur with no argumentation actually presented, going on about lyndon b johnson, when it's clear the problems are actually a) much more difficult and complicated than nthat, and b) much less to do with lyndon b johsnon.

but i digress.

    >“These killings come on top of other forms of oppression black people face. Mass incarceration of nonwhites is one of them. While African-Americans constitute 13.1% of the nation’s population, they make up nearly 40% of the prison population. Even though African-Americans use or sell drugs about the black rage hillsame rate as whites, they are 2.8 to 5.5 times more likely to be arrested for drugs than whites. Black offenders also receive longer sentences compared to whites. Most offenders are in prison for nonviolent drug offenses.”

of course, the education system and the structures of capitalism are all parts of the problem. they are simply one element of a racist system. the police and justice system form another, extremely important part. i don't see what this has to do with a "welfare system" from lyndon b johnson being the problem, i don't see why you can't figure out that your "sigh, if only black people would listen to me" story doesn't make you sound like a fucking dickhead. but let's move on.

  • Black-on-Black homicides have decreased by 67% in 20 years, a sharper rate of decrease than white on white homicide.
  • According to FBI statistics 7361 Blacks were killed by fellow African-Americans in 1991. In 2011, it dropped dramatically to 2447 African-Americans.
  • Among Black youth, rates of robbery and serious property offenses are the lowest in more than 40 years.
  • Five times as many Whites are using drugs as African Americans, yet African Americans are sent to prison for drug offenses at 10 times the rate of Whites.
  • Controlling for other factors, including severity of the offense and prior criminal history, white men aged 18-29 were 38% less likely to be sentenced to prison than their Black male peers.
  • African Americans were two times as likely to be arrested and almost four times as likely to experience the use of force during encounters with the police.

    source: http://www.demos.org/blog/7/29/13/myth-black-black-crime-epidemic

why is this relevant? it shows the black crime rate is decreasing. if the black crime rate was the primary factor in why police target and kill black people, we should expect that the rate of police killings of black people should decrease too. and yet, they aren't.

    here's also a key link.

institutional/systemic racism is not magically confined to one area or one cause or one system. but that doesn't chagne the fact that cops killing people is the problem, and as mapping police violence proves, is uncorrelated with black crime, or violent crime in general.

perhaps you should read The New Jim Crow so you can actually understand the issue before you start talking bullshit. to be honest, your argument is so unclear that it's hard to argue directly against what you're presenting, instead of arguing at what you seem to be supporting.
