Hey, I have a rather odd request. Long-time Apple user considering converting.

I have this fancy-ass Iphone 6 but all I've ever used it for is Reddit, texting, and occasional camera use. I figure I can go for a mid-low tier android phone and save a ton of money, plus maybe get an Oculus with the savings... Maybe. That's a whole different prospect.

Project Fi is super enticing, especially as a close friend of mine already has a plan so I can get on for $15 a month. Unfortunately, it looks like Nexus support is on the way out. I've heard tell of a mid-range Project Fi phone, but that'll probably be more like 499 or 599 I imagine, am I wrong in that assumption?

My real question comes down to this:
Could I get a cheap unlocked Amazon phone such as this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MR2ZFBI/ref=s9_acsd_top_hd_bw_b7idkCh_c_x_w/136-6717101-9542247?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-5&pf_rd_r=HJQVMWR6XHB8Z85BR5TZ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=57667ce6-acc7-5ba8-9741-874ed9522109&pf_rd_i=7072561011&th=1
and grab a custom OS or whatnot to trick Project Fi into thinking it's a Nexus/Pixel? I'm technically proficient (have the fancy CS degree and everything), but have never worked on something like this.

If something like that is possible, would I be able to get rid of the Amazon ads? Is there any other software that may come baked I should worry about?

Thanks,
-Dozar

dang. it was on amazon and best buy THIS weekend at $299. Sorry to mislead.

you can check out here, it looks like there is a return for $273+tax with the amazon warranty.

here is the camelcamelcamel link with has the $299 this past weekend. you can definitely set up an alert.

ASUS Zenpad Z500M seems like a better value right now unless you really want the updates quick or want a smaller form factor. I have one coming tomorrow and I'll be happy as long as it gets firmware updates eventually. You get a lot more for just $99.

This thread praises the Exomount, although I don't believe it has the magnets that trigger the cardock state. With the way this dock holds the phone, it looks like the camera will be unobstructed, which is perfect for a dash cam setup.

If not the Exomount, I might go with the pricier ProClip USA for the custom fitting (mounted directly on top of a vent, to alleviate overheating problems).

u/Pyrallis · 1 pointr/Android

I have two Arkon universal car mounts. They've served me well, and I specifically got them because they did not obstruct the camera. I use my smartphone as a dash cam, so that was important to me. YMMV, of course, since every device is different, but since it's a universal mount, you can easily adjust it to provide a clear view for the camera.

It holds tight--I've tested it by mounting my Nexus One in it, holding it upside down (over a pillow), and shaking. The N1 stayed firmly gripped.

I have two, because one is mounted to a smooth, suction-cup plate on my car's dash board, and the other one is mounted to a weighted friction base, which I use as a desktop phone stand. Pic 1, and Pic 2.

u/Perry7609 · 1 pointr/Android

I use this in my Kia at the moment. Works great! Wish it has a forward/rewind part at times, but it plays pretty well otherwise.

Also get a noise isolator in case you want to charge things at the same time.

We're pretty close to AptX HD car adapters being a reality, so I'd say wait a bit. If you must have one now, there are quite a few regular AptX ones on the market. Just look for one that has a USB type A plug rather than a built in car charger plug. Much better to use your own charger in the car to get fast charge, more than 1 slot, etc.

Something like this. This specific ones comes with a 3 slot charger, which I guess is cool if you don't care about fast charging. My car has 2 power plugs so it'd be great for me and leave room to hook up a dashcam using one of the other slots on the charger, and use my other plug for my phone fast charger.

But still, always get a ground loop isolator. They're usually under $10 and completely eliminate electronic whine. Like this.

u/loki8481 · 2 pointsr/Android

what about the ASUS ZenPad 3S 10?

if all you're using it for is reading, you may like the Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 for the little handle thing it has. makes holding it to read a book pretty comfortable.

u/ArkAngel06 · 1 pointr/Android

I recommend one of these. They work great and let you control the music tracks, podcasts, audiobooks from the controller.

And you might need of these if you get a little bit of feedback like me.

I have had this (http://www.amazon.com/Arkon-SM410-Universal-Windshield-Smartphones/dp/B003ELOOZO/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1376569731&sr=8-12&keywords=galaxy+nexus+window+mount) for the past 3 smartphones I have used, GS1, GS2, and Galaxy Nexus.

Worked perfectly for all of them, and a myriad of other random friends smartphones. Cheap, reliable, and does not come off unless I want it to.

u/Eleminohp · 3 pointsr/Android

It's not quite the same thing, but if you own a Canon DSLR this DSLR Controller app is extremely useful. I am currently a DP on an indie film, and while I have a lot of gear, I decided to skip buying a monitor this time around. I remembered this app being in beta stages and I was like well 7 bucks is cheaper than $300+ for a monitor, so I will try it out. I have the Asus Transformer so a standard USB cord is all I needed to link it up to the camera, but I also bought the OTG cord for my phone and other future tablets. I must say that this app gives you COMPLETE control of your DSLR over your Android and it does it very intuitively. The live view has a slight delay, but for the sake of focusing your shot, a 10 inch screen is the way to do it.

*edit: I should note that if you buy a newer Canon DSLR (like the 6D) you can connect to this app via wifi and forego the cable altogether.

u/TheRealFender · 5 pointsr/Android

I have this Arkon from Amazon and it works pretty well for my EVO. It should work for larger phones as well. The mechanism is starting to wear out after a year and a half or so. I think I got it for $14, so I wouldn't mind paying that again if/when it wears out.

u/Kleivonen · 3 pointsr/Android

My 6P can already do this, and I'm pretty sure most/all Android phones can do this.

Also, lol, no USB-C. Who would back a project that uses a standard that's about to change? Most new Android phones don't use microusb.

Also, these exist:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00SHM4HS4?pc_redir=T1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005GGBYJ4?pc_redir=T1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HPQUBGK?pc_redir=T1

Edit:

Also, USB-C supports this out of the box.

u/FL14 · 2 pointsr/Android

I'm looking to buy a Galaxy S7 soon - my Xperia Z3v's charge port cover broke off, and it's a huge pain in the ass now in other facets as well.

I've seen that the Exynos processor has been much better in benchmarks than the Snapdragon 820. If I buy the international version seen here will I still be able to use my phone on Verizon in the states? It says the unlocked phones will not work with Sprint or Verizon - is there any way around this or is it set in stone without me switching carriers?

If I'm still good to go, would the EULAT version (G930F) be better than the ASIA version (G930FD)?

Thanks!

> Nexus 7 2013

I appreciate you response and help but I think that is beyond my budget atm. I'm looking for something under $70. It's limiting but I'm not expecting too much.

I found this when looking at the Amazon Fire tablets which looks good and is in my price range but I've become accustomed to Android. Is there a big difference? Will I be able to use the Google App store? Netflix, clash of clans, Hearthstone, that kind of stuff?

u/eXDee · 1 pointr/Android

The Wirecutter has a good round up of bluetooth car kits. Saves heaps of research.

My criteria:

  • Uses USB for power, not a cigarette lighter hard wired (allows for dual/tri usb chargers)
  • Supports APT-X and AAC if possible
  • Play/Pause and Skip
  • Can trigger Google Now
  • Clear audio for handsfree phone calls
  • Practical/well designed/not too large.

I got the Himbox HB-01, while it doesn't support APT-X the new one does, and the stock stereo is probably the limiting factor in sound quality. To get google now working, i installed an app "BT Gnow". The New HB-01+ i believe would resolve both apt-x and google now out of the box.

Note when you have a device such a phone or bluetooth car kit connected to both aux and usb, you may get noise in some vehicles. It varies by device and by vehicle. While in my car the noise is minimal, I still use a ground loop isolator to eliminate it entirely. You'll notice that the wirecutter mentions the newer HB-01+ has a whine, i'd wager that this may be eliminated with a ground loop isolator.
u/Gunski · 1 pointr/Android

I've had two of these and I also recommend it. Don't put it on your window and then roll it down because that will strip the suction cup. Otherwise, it's amazing.

Amazon Link

u/ccai · 2 pointsr/Android

They're surprisingly cheap at $105. The best thing about it is that it's not an upgrade locked to one single device, instead if you change phones to another device with an SD card slot you can keep that 400gb instead of wasting more money on another crazy storage upgrade (obviously assuming your new phone supports it as well).

Sure, it's not as quick as internal storage, but you can still use the internal storage for anything that requires those speeds like 4k recording at the highest quality and transfer them over the SD card upon completion to make room for new content as playback doesn't require nearly as much bandwidth.

u/Staedin · 2 pointsr/Android

I got an Arkon SM410 for my Galaxy S3. Its been great. Gives you 3 different ways to attach the dock to your car. On amazon right now for ~$15 before shipping

u/Charged_Buffalo · 4 pointsr/Android

I think you mean a USB OTG Y-cable? This one seems like a safe bet.

u/LightKiosk · 15 pointsr/Android

You mean something like this?

SONY seems to have been doing good lately on keeping their OS very lightweight, and they're aiming to be the first manufacturer outside of Google to release 7.1.1 on their devices.

u/7DUKjTfPlICRWNL · 1 pointr/Android

I tried to use a USB OTG cable like this to connect a USB headset (also tested thumbdrive and mouse).

On my Nexus 6 - Didn't charge, but audio worked
On my Galaxy S3 - Charged and USB audio
On my Moto G 3rd Gen - Didn't charge, but audio worked.

I know USB 2.0 and USB OTG isn't the same thing as USB 3 and type C, but I assume/guess the software would have to support playing and charging.

u/xelf · 1 pointr/Android

I have yet to buy any apps (not counting the hundreds of app of the day paid apps from amazon). I know that doesn't really answer your question, but it's a relevant data point.

Of the apps I picked up for free I would be tempted to pay for:

u/techniq · 1 pointr/Android

I bought one of these over a year ago and have been very happy with it. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003ELOOZO/?tag=tipsontech-20

u/YupYesYeah · 5 pointsr/Android

I've been really happy with my Exomount.

u/esantipapa · 1 pointr/Android

Yeah, I know it is about 4 years old, which is bizarre. Like /u/0110111001101111 points out though, they don't even make 2TB cards yet, and 256GB is like $300 (that's not micro though). Largest micro I could find is 128, and it's $100.

u/j13u11fr09 · 2 pointsr/Android

I have one of those and it's great. The two side arms that hold the phone in are high enough that I can plug the charger into the phone with no problem. This is with my phone's case on. It grips the phone tight enough that I have no worries that it will fall out...

EDIT: I have a DX as well...

EDIT2: just cause I'm afraid I might get you to buy something that doesn't work ;)

This is the one I bought: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ELOOZO
It's actually model number SM410. As I said above, I feel it's a great mount for my Droid X. Holds it great and has room for the charger.

tl;dr Great mount, highly suggested.

u/MajorNoodles · 2 pointsr/Android

I picked up an Exomount Universal Mount a few days ago and so far, I'm very happy with it. Holds my SGSII right below the volume and power buttons, plus, it'll stick to most hard, flat surfaces - it stuck securely to both my car dashboard and the wall in my apartment. You just have to tighten the ball socket joint tightly to minimize wobble while driving.

u/smithdorm · 1 pointr/Android

My wife's car had an aux input standard, so this is what I did for her car. The only difference is I got a BT receiver by Belkin.

It works great - I have an older car and no aux input (and no easy way to get one installed), so I have to resort to an FM transmitter.

u/mostly_a_lurker_here · 2 pointsr/Android

I used to have the same accessory in my Galaxy Nexus. A thicker battery that comes with its own back cover. https://www.amazon.com/Hyperion-Extended-Compatible-SCH-i515-CAPABILITIES/dp/B007C8XRJY

Interchangeable batteries ftw!

u/eerhtmot · 2 pointsr/Android

I switched over to this guy, and I'm very pleased with it. It can totally last you a day.

u/ewhite81 · 7 pointsr/Android

I just found this one by Logitech

I've been looking at this one by Belkin but it requires a slight modification to get the range restored on it. Belkin put a metal weight in the case that is causing the interference, at least that's what I've read.

u/ericr86 · 1 pointr/Android

To Ontario it has it listed as $43 for me. Is it an Amazon Prime thing? Presumably the seller is amazon, this is the link I'm seeing on amazon.com: https://www.amazon.com/Moto-Plus-5th-Generation-Lockscreen/dp/B01MR2ZFBI/

Amazon Global Shipping: ~ $6

Estimated Import Fees Deposit: ~ $37

u/disastar · 1 pointr/Android

Instead of buying another computer, could you just purchase a bluetooth music receiver and plug it into your speakers? Something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Speaker-Bluetooth-980-000540/dp/B004VM1T5S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1348101119&sr=8-2&keywords=bluetooth+music+receiver

There are cheaper ones from Belkin and Britelink on Amazon, but some of the reviews make me wary.

Monoprice sells this one (no battery), and it has decent reviews:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10827&cs_id=1082704&p_id=7364&seq=1&format=4#feedback

They also have a battery powered version for additional portability:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10827&cs_id=1082704&p_id=9472&seq=1&format=4#feedback

u/havetolovemusic · 1 pointr/Android

I've read some comments that there is often a 'humming' noise, and many people recommend getting a ground loop isolator. This may not be with this specific device either. Can you comment on this? Thanks!

u/44ml · 2 pointsr/Android

Why not just use a Bluetooth receiver?

I had tried several in my last vehicle, but really liked this one. It has a battery, which seamed to make it more reliable and less glitchy. I kept it plugged in to accessory power, so I had to also use an isolator to filter out the hum you get when you're connected to aux audio and power. It turned off when it stopped charging, so it didn't stay connected. I could also plug it into non-bluetooth speakers and its battery would last several hours.

u/spaceballsrules · 5 pointsr/Android

The Moto G5 Plus is well priced right now on Amazon. 32 GB/2 GB RAM for $200, and the 64 GB/4 GB RAM for $250. You could save a little more if you opt for the Prime offers and ads, but it's probably not worth it.
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MR2ZFBI/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_6?ie=UTF8&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1

u/Tarpit_Carnivore · 10 pointsr/Android

This is called ground loop interference. You can get a cable like this: http://www.amazon.com/PAC-Ground-Isolator-3-5-Applications/dp/B001EAQTRI to remove the noise. Just be aware this may reduce frequencies, like bass, but it will remove the hiss.

u/almotrat · 1 pointr/Android

You should pre-order the Nexus 9 on Google Play, Amazon, or Best Buy.

Prices:

  • 16 GB WiFi - Lunar White = $399
  • 16 GB WiFi - Indigo Black = $399
  • 32 GB WiFi - Lunar White = $479
  • 32 GB WiFi - Indigo Black = $479
  • 32 GB WiFi + LTE - Indigo Black = $599

If you aren't buying a case, go for a simple cover. I recommend Poetic SlimLine.
u/Kratisto78 · 2 pointsr/Android

[Is the Kindle Fire worth getting for $50?] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TSUGXKE/ref=fs_ods_fs_tab_fd) Basically I was thinking about getting a tablet for just chilling in the living room. I would use it for reddit, maybe hearthstone, and for casting netflix/hbo/youtube/playmovies/playmusic to chromecast enabled devices. I was considering the 7" one, but I have a note 4. I figured the cheaper one had a bigger screen, so it might be more worth it.

u/OutsideObserver · -7 pointsr/Android

Because if the industry doesn't evolve it will fall behind.

And yes, probably the intention is to move to Bluetooth for casual audio and use USB support for higher-quality/powered headphones, speakers etc.

A basic pair of bluetooth headphones (I use these myself and they are great for the price) can be had for under $20, a good pair can still be found for less than $100. Battery life is getting better and better.

I don't have bluetooth in my car, but I did buy a bluetooth audio receiver for ~$30 (it was a bit cheaper when I bought it) that powers over micro-USB, and has NFC for quick-connection.

Wires are old-hat.

u/saegiru · 1 pointr/Android

I use a Homespot NFC Bluetooth receiver plugged into my AUX Jack. It works ridiculously well, and if a friend wants to pair their phone with it, all they have to do is tap it(as long as they have an NFC device anyway, otherwise they can manually pair via Bluetooth). It sounds great and is powered by 5v micro USB. It reconnects automatically when I turn on my car, so it's seamless. I tried quite a few different devices and this has easily been the best.

u/volando34 · 1 pointr/Android

Honestly, don't do it. Audio over BlueTooth sounds terrible if you actually care for your music experience. The signal is compressed in a very lossy way, sounds like the source is in a tunnel. This is not an "audiophile vs normal person" argument, you WILL hear the difference between a $1 monoprice audio cable and any sort of wireless connection that you set up. The Belkin and Logitech devices linked below are pretty much equivalent, and equally bad in this respect.

Here's a CNET article that confirms this.

p.s. AirPlay uses some sort of wifi protocol, not BT, so it's noticeably better, but we don't have a lot of options for that in the non-fruit world.

u/tossin · 1 pointr/Android

I'm looking for a decent 10-inch tablet, either Android or Windows 10, mostly for the usual stuff: reading (books, academic papers, comics, manga), browsing, and watching videos. The best budget deal seems to be the ASUS Zenbook 3S 10. However, it has a worrying number of 1 star reviews from verified purchasers (12%) indicating near-DOA malfunctions. Also, it doesn't seem like ASUS is updating from Android 6 anytime soon.

I'm also tempted to spring for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3, but it's got less RAM and disk space for over twice the price.

Any suggestions?

u/bicyclemom · 1 pointr/Android

I don't know if the Galaxy S4 supports USB On the Go, but I carry in my DSLR camera case a USB On-the-go adapter which works with the Galaxy S3. I also carry this small multi card adapter. Connect the USB OTG cable to the phone and the adapter to the other end of the cable. Pop the card into the adapter and you're on your way.

Yeah it should.

One problem I have in my car is that if the phone is charging and playing music through the headphones at the same time, there is a little humming noise that increases with revs of the engine. If you get this issue, you'll need a Ground Loop Isolator.

I just bought one from Amazon. It was $79 on Black Friday, so kinda hard to pass up. I have no idea what I'll fill it with, though, but my 64GB was getting full of music. There's also a 200GB card, also made by Sandisk. They're the only manufacturer I've seen make these odd sizes, though. There are 512GB cards out there, but they're not on Amazon and they're really expensive, like close to $400.

After 2 days of looking at 10" Tablet (8" looks too small) for 350€~ I'm a little bit lost, I'm looking for something that have a good battery, can handle multimedia without problem, not really interested by games and I will buy a bluetooth keyboard to write.

Due to differents taxes in France my choices are between the Asus Zenpad 3S 10 (Asus Z500M) and the Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Plus, both are at 320€~ here in France.

Both of them have pros and cons but I'm not sure if I am in the right or if there is something else better than both of them for my use. I have poor knowledge of phone/tablet environment.

u/ins0mn1a · 1 pointr/Android

i am considering getting a bluetooth speaker adapter, for example this one. cheaper than getting a new sound system with wireless capability, especially if you already have decent amp & speakers and no other reason to change them.

u/JFreaks25 · 1 pointr/Android

echo? I think you are a little confused, the amazon echo is a bluetooth speaker/personal assistant. But if you are talking about an amazon fire tablet, you can always get this one, and its only 50 bucks

u/9966 · 2 pointsr/Android

I really like it, actually.

The basics: I went with Trexcell 3800 mAh (on Amazon) for about $20. The first battery they sent was defective or something (same if not worse battery life than stock). The second one worked... they have good customer service for replacing batteries, so just keep an eye out on your screen-on time the first few days using it. If I were doing it all over again, I'd probably try their competitor Hyperion. I can't comment on their quality.

Looks/weight: It doesn't look pretty as pretty as stock, but it does add some nice weight to it (I can tell if its right side up by feel). I can also tell if its in my pocket or not. The original was often so light I could reach into my pocket several times and still freak out that I had misplaced my phone. I'm now quite a fan. When you're holding it no one can see the ugly backside unless you point it out.

Cases: Originally I just cut the back off my case from Verizon (which I still have as a back up) with box cutter. I now use this case that costs $3.09 for it, which gives it a nicer profile. You get what you pay for, though, and the rubber is kind of falling off (for the second time). So I may go back to my case.

My settings: (CM10 alpha from winner00, about to switch to Liquid Smooth JB when the first non-beta release drops). I'm on 4g most of the day, and Wifi at home. I manually toggle 4g off and Wifi on at home, and reverse it during the day. I use the CM10 notification bar toggles (same when I was running ICS Liquid Smooth 1.5). I don't know if it saves battery to turn off 4G when running WiFi, but it hasn't hurt. Worse case scenario I leave the house and I'm running 3G while listening to my audiobook.

That was much more than I intended to type, but if you have any more questions let me know.

I could never get my Nexus 4 to recognize my bluetooth headphones or my Logitech Bluetooth Audio receiver. Has anyone else had that problem with the Jelly Bean bluetooth stack and does the new bluetooth update correct that?

no, but i know how audio systems work. ive built tube amplifiers, installed multiple stereo systems in cars before, and i'm an engineer that deals with signal processing. for what you are saying to be true, it would imply your amp in your car has more distortion than the tiny inexpensive amp in your phone. which i guess is possible if you have the shittiest amp/deck ever made. read the first sentence of the link below.

the hissing noise is a separate problem. usually due to a grounding issue. this will probably fix it.

I can go right now and order a Nexus 9 running 5.0 and have it shipped to my door tomorrow. I seriously doubt the delays are Lollipop related. I think the issue is that Google/Motorola were simply not ready to launch the device when someone made the call to send out the initial press release back in October. It could also be that they simply did not anticipate the demand that this phone would have, seeing as how everyone and their grandmother shit all over it for having a nearly 6" screen, and they decided that they would attempt a small, quiet rollout and fill demand as it required.

I could use advice on a new 10" tablet.

At some point I'm going to need to replace my ASUS Transformer TF701T.

3 nagging issues are getting to me.

  1. The speakers blew and so I currently keep portable speakers on hand now, but it can be a pain.

  2. I've had it rooted for the last couple years with CM or Katkiss installed... But with the whole Netflix/Playstore thing, I decided to go back to stock... Stock is garbage. 4.4.2 with bloatware and terrible battery life. (I tried Magisk + Katkiss but I'll have to try again to get it working properly)

  3. I always hated that it uses a hard to find 36-pin (I think) connector and ASUS plug. Its overpriced and the knockoffs are terrible. I've tried a few and they're all disposable.

So I'm about ready to move on, but I'm trying to keep it cheap as possible without feeling like I'm downgrading. TF701T really did feel quite amazing running some roms.

    Right now I'm looking at:

    ASUS ZenPad 3S 10

    Samsung Galaxy Tab A
