Yeah -- this is being said in a harsh way, but it's the real deal. Film school is often very expensive, with a relatively poor ROI. And the opportunity costs of sitting in a classroom, when you could be working, are also high.

If you want to learn technical skills in other departments, since you're already in the industry, just make friends with people in the other departments and ask them to hire you on a job or two. Really -- people love giving someone with enthusiasm a chance. You'll probably have to start out at the bottom in any department you lateral to, but, hey, still cheaper than school.

If you want to learn more about film in a critical sense -- like, the why of certain technical choices -- you can teach yourself most of that:

  • First, if you like to read, there are great standard textbooks, like Bordwell & Thompson, and you can rent the videos and read along. You can also learn a ton by reading great critics, like Andrew Sarris, Robin Wood, and Jonathan Rosenbaum. Or there are online film theorists like Every Frame a Painting.
  • Second, watch everything you can get your hands on, including old movies, foreign films, experimental films, "tentpole" action pics, Netflix originals, YouTube/Vimeo, etc., etc., etc.
  • Third, try to reproduce what you see, or use it as a starting point to try something new -- an cell phone or iPad camera is perfectly good (way, way better than anything available to normal people when I was starting out). Use your household lamps or flashlights as light sources if you don't have anything else. You really will figure it out.

If you're still not convinced, though -- I agree with the redditor above who suggests GFA, which partners with community colleges and looks to be relatively affordable.

Depends. I tried using the shuttle once and they refused to take me since I didn't have a "dual-chambered" tube, which is bullshit. It was just their way of forcing you to rent one of their tubes if you want to ride with them. Taking 2 cars is definitely the way to go, leaving one at the exit point (Parking costs $3). If you're going to go more than once over the summer, just invest in the tube a life jacket. These are the tubes everyone buys, and buying it costs the same as renting it once. It won't help you for tomorrow, but life jackets are currently $12 on Amazon. So once you make the initial investment, it's free to go as much as you want after that.

I use a different route than what was suggested above: Start at Cochran island, 5450 Interstate N Pkwy Sandy Springs, GA 30328 and end at Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area: Paces Mill
3444 Cobb Pkwy Atlanta, GA 30339. I've done a lot of tubing and this is the best route, and it's very popular. It takes 3 hours. I've never heard of being able to rent only the life jackets, but it may be possible.

I go pretty often, so let me know if you have any other questions. Oh, and here's where you check if it's safe to go, but this is only an issue if it's been raining during the week.

EDIT: I just saw an even better deal for life jackets

>much cheaper than Claratin, Allegra, or other newer types

These can be bought as generics on Amazon for super cheap. This generic Zyrtec is 4 cents a pill.

Generic Allegra is quite a bit more expensive but not too terrible.

Generic Claritin is also super cheap.

The generic Zyrtec and Claritin are actually cheaper than what they sell thh Wal-Finate for (which comes out to a little over 10 cents a pill -- and they last all day instead of 4 hours).

I still have over half of my generic Zyrtec bottle from last year linked above.

For that matter, you can also get chlorpheniramine (what Wal-Finate is) on Amazon for much cheaper too. The Walgreen's website has their Wal-Finate listed at $7 for a 50 count of 4mg tablets. Amazon has $12 for a 1000 count of 4mg tablets.

You're welcome :)

I love David McCollough's writing style - that book is definitely a monster (I've gotten part way through it). That wouldn't be a bad suggestion except I packed a lot of my books away when we moved here and not moved it here with me. I'll have to take a look!

I really love books written by journalists about historical events. For instance, I love Adam Hochschild's books, like To End All Wars, it's just my attention span is horrible right now.

You can get something like a security bar to very cheaply upgrade your security. Only works when you're there (obv) but it will make it very very hard for anyone to enter your house. I highly recommend this option or something like Master Lock 265DCCSEN Dual-Function Security Bar https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002YUX8I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_DEbTzb0ZJWCG5

Don't buy a shitty walmart float. Just buy a good Intex tube, they are $18:
http://www.amazon.com/Intex-58825E-River-Run-I/dp/B000PEOMC8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1376583590&sr=8-1&keywords=intex+river+run

Much better quality, two cup holders, a headrest, a good valve, thicker plastic. Cheaper to buy this than to pay for one tube rental.

This one! There are a bunch of less expensive wake-up lights, but I like that this one's colors mimic an actual sunrise (and sunset, too - there's a "go to sleep" mode that's pretty neat), rather than just going from soft light, to normal light, to BRIGHT-ASS LIGHT.

They should hand out free copies of Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We Do by Tom Vanderbilt to explain how/why this works.

There's solid science behind these signs...but of course you have to have signs that actually function correctly.

edit: added link to book.

This is the one I have. The C means capacitor instead of battery since it gets too hot in Atlanta to have a device with a battery sitting on your dash all day and the B means the lens is black so it's less conspicuous.

I got This SD card. The camera supports up to 32gb. Don't buy SanDisk with this camera, they don't play well.

And I got this attachment which is way better than the suction cup option.

Lastly, make sure if you buy this camera it records in .mov files. There some cheap knock offs that record in .avi that aren't 1080p.

Hope this helps.

*Why the downvote? If you want to discuss gentrification then this study is required reading. He wrote a Pulitzer prize winning book about it: Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City if that's more your style.

We've been having massive issues with mosquitos getting into the house in the dozens, tons of gnats and fruit flies, and random other bugs. I bought one of these and put it in the hallway and it has been hands down the best bug killer I have ever tried. It gets pretty much all of them, not just certain types. We still have a few we find in the house, but I feel like it's getting around 80% of them. This is the sticky pad after a week of running it.

Have you tried one of the on the window kind. I've got one of these they work great. AmazonBasics Ultra Thin Indoor TV Antenna - 35 Mile Range https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00X4RA74A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_L635wbRA6ANWM

I also recommend The Big Roads by Earl Swift. It's the history of the entire US highway system, from the days of cart paths to present day [2011]. It's a bit dry, but if you find "Georgia Department of Transportation Office of Environment/Location Project Task Order No. 94 Contract EDS-0001-00(755)" interesting, then I suspect you'll like this book too.

You could just take a bunch of laxatives and save yourself $8

u/lady_bluesky · 1 pointr/Atlanta

This is the one I got! It's gone down in price a bit since I bought it.

This is the one I have. I've had it for 3.5 years and the only issue I've had with it didn't start until a week ago. The date and time keep resetting so I have to set that up every time. It's kind of annoying but it only takes 30 seconds. I'll keep it until it dies fully.

You'll also need to get an SD card for it.

I think scooter skill and etiquette will improve with time. You still have a lot of people riding them for the first time to try them out.

Side note, does anyone have one of these and know how to lock them to bike racks? I'm passively interested in one but the inability to lock them seems devastating.
