I don't have any local recommendations for you, but I do have a few world-class recommendations that will cost you much less in time and money.

For CBT, check out Dr. David Burn's book - Feeling Good: You can pick it up online for like $5. It is a light and interesting read, lots of stories. Here is a study about "Feeling Good": "This study provided empirical evidence that a behavioral prescription for Feeling Good may be as effective as standard care, which commonly involves an antidepressant prescription."

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20803165

For mindfulness, the fountainhead is Eastern/Bhuddist thought here is a good source for that:
The Power of Mindfulness by Nyanaponika Thera (fo free online)

http://www.buddhanet.net/pdf_file/powermindfulness.pdf

If you want both CBT and Mindfulness - then you should read or listen to Jeffery Schwartz. He has a few books, the most recent "You are not your brain" is approachable and an integration of Mindfulness and Cognitive Therapy.
Here is a 5 minute video, gives you a feel for the author: "4 steps to changing your brain for good"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuABDAAns7w

If you like that - here is a half-hour more (summary of the book above):
'You are not your brain' at Mind & Its Potential 2011
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcrGlUHlu4M

Finally, if you are into workbooks - pick up "Mind over Mood"

http://www.amazon.com/Mind-Over-Mood-Change-Changing/dp/0898621283

Regardless of the book or therapist, you will have to do a lot mental work. So ultimately, most of the therapy, is self-therapy.
Best of luck to you. And remember: this too, shall pass.

First of all, the bug spray WILL work, but once an infestation is in place then you have a bit of a battle on your hands. It won't go away over night. I would call the pest company and tell them about the situation. It is in their best interest to keep you as a customer and provide stellar support because...

Second: Spraying for bugs yourself is really easy and extremely cheap. For the price of one guy coming to your house and spraying once you could cover your house for many, many years.

Buy this and one of these. Read the warning labels (don't spray if rain is expected within 24-48 hours, clear the house until the spray is dry, which is about 30 minutes), watch some YouTube instructions, and away you go! Demand is very safe for humans and pets alike, doesn't bioaccumulate, and is probably what the pest guys used.

I'm not a record player expert, so I just googled best intro turntables, finding the audio technica one got good reviews across multiple sites. Ordered off Amazon for under $100. It's been great so far. I know it's not something a true audiophile would get, but as a big music fan, I love it.

If you're buying one now, might as well start the record collection at Encore Records sale going on right now. I usually buy from End of an Ear, Waterloo, Friends of Sound though.

Yes it's entirely possible! I think that's also what /u/jbjjbjbb was saying. I agree the perspective with the Driskill is strange. Perhaps it could be an artifact of the camera technology of the time? I can't answer for sure. Thanks kindly for the high praise! If you are interested in that time period in Austin and haven't ever heard of it, I highly recommend the book Guy Town by Gaslight by Richard Zelade. It's available down at the big new library, too!

It's not the fanciest solution, but I use this:
http://www.amazon.com/GOgroove-FlexSMART-Bluetooth-Transmitter-Hands-Free/dp/B003PPGOC0

My car stereo doesn't even have an AUX input and the way the stereo is integrated into the dash, no easy way to install an aftermarket stereo. The GoGroove connects to your phone with Bluetooth, and then transmits the signal over FM to your car stereo. I've had other FM transmitters over the years and this is the best I've used.

Of course it's not perfect. If you need to do important phone conferences from your car, I'd get something nicer. For the occasional call, this works pretty well. I use it more for streaming music from my phone than for calls.

started seeing some results with boric acid - the little ones are starting to die off. i was skeptical at first but it seems to be taking foot. i'm gonna pick up a can of this stuff after work as well https://www.amazon.com/BENGAL-CHEMICAL-Roach-Spray-92464/dp/B0015I3ESG this has some of the best reviews i've seen on a roach killer so i've got high hopes.

Once you find a therapist, here's a good article to read through before your first visit: https://psychcentral.com/lib/what-to-expect-in-your-first-counseling-session/

If things aren't clicking between you and the therapist after the first couple of visits, don't be afraid to cancel future appointments and try another one. (Don't just ghost them though; make sure you cancel the appointments or they could charge you a cancellation fee.)

The first therapist I ever went to fell asleep during our first meeting. I called the next day and told her I didn't think it was going to work out.

If you decide you don't want or can't afford therapy, here is a really good book: https://amazon.com/Feeling-Good-New-Mood-Therapy/dp/0380810336/ I've used it a couple of times to help me out of a slump.

Just remember that it's OK to ask for help.

I'd suggest Josh Long's Weird City: Sense of Place and Creative Resistance in Austin, Texas. It's not a hard read but fairly informative.

Also Jason Mellard's Progressive Country: How the 1970s Transformed the Texan in Popular Culture will be of great use to you.

Finally, check out The End of Austin for both contemporary and historic shorter pieces about Austin's "weird" identity. Provocative name but the actual content of the site is much more concerned with exploring Austin's changing identity, not presupposing that it's over.

Great post. I read The Cedar Choppers: Life on The Edge of Nothing last year, and it was an excellent read. Highly recommended.

78754 here. Was renting TWC's DOCSIS 2.0 surfboard modem to use with our own router, getting ~15/1.5. Last week we took them up on their free modemswap service to upgrade to a 3.0. Didn't realize they'd send us a modem/router combo (Arris), but we entertained it for a few hours. It was garbage. Purchased our own SB6121, now we're getting ~50/5. Highly recommend purchasing your own equipment.

Can there be just one single day where I don't have to read ignorant white fuckery? Since you obviously don't read books or know how Austin works, I'll tell you.

Nobody let their neighborhood "go to shit". Blacks literally were not allowed to buy housing except for redlined areas. White housing was subsidized via the GI Bill (which Blacks were not eligible for), and low/zero down payment FHA loans. Neither the FHA or VA would back loans for blacks in general or in any redlined area. (Almost the entire Crestview/Rosedale/Allandale neighborhoods were built for returning GI's, which essentially built the white middle class.) Blacks could only buy in areas where private lenders made loans at higher interest rates and bigger down payments which caused defaults and created a renter class, especially since many cities had more black residents than available redline zoned property.

Whites would buy property in the redlined areas and let the properties go to shit. Blacks couldn't bring suit against whites and white attorneys wouldn't represent blacks in court so there was no recourse. Then cities used zoning laws to zone all of the failure in black neighborhoods, e.g. liquor stores, the goddamn east side landfill, etc. This was literally the law and happened in virtually every city in the country.

Flash forward until today. Some blacks were able to own their homes and get decent terms starting in the 70's. Now some of these people have paid off their mortgages but now have to compete with millennials with Mommy and Daddy's money they got from their subsidized housing that has now appreciated. Then they have to deal with racist white attitudes like "don't let your neighborhood go to shit" and entitled whites acting like they are doing everyone a favor by forcing longtime residents out. Sometimes people don't want to cash out, they want to keep the asset to pass to their heirs like whites were able to.

'worship' is kind of an oversell, but the whole thing is creepy nonetheless. Have you read Jon Ronson's book? He was there with Jones. Pretty interesting stuff.

Guy Town by Gaslight: A History of Vice in Austin's First Ward by Richard Zelade came out earlier this year and looks like a great read.

Dammit!! I bought this and it's not getting the 100Mbs down like I'm supposed to have but the specs say it should.

Any ideas? On the approved modem list it doesn't show it as compatible though.

Amazon

From Alamo's website:

> TOGARASHI POPCORN
Fresh, hot buttered corn with a kick of Japanese spice. Vegetarian.

“Being a movie theater, I really wanted to blend some great Japanese flavors with our most popular snack. I landed on togarashi — a blend of red chili and other spices and common Japanese condiment — as the flavor driver for our ISLE OF DOGS popcorn special. Not only does the popcorn itself get tossed in this flavorful seasoning, but we infuse the butter as well.”

"...considering how old it is"? You don't need to go back all that far to find a time when restrictive covenents were still stipulated and enforced. If you'd like a pretty in-depth treatment of the subject, check out the book, The Color of Law.

I bike everywhere even during the summer months. One way to keep sweating to a minimum is to plan routes through quiet/shaded neighborhood streets, ride at a bit of a slower pace, get to know the topography to avoid hills, avoid wearing backpacks (get a rear rack on your bike and attach panniers to carry things), and avoid riding during the hottest part of the day if possible (3-5 PM).

There are commuter showers at Mellow Johnny's downtown. Outside of downtown, you can maybe look if there's a gym nearby your workplace (if they don't provide one) if you think you need to shower before work. That or you can bring a change of clothes and some wet wipes and clean yourself off a bit at your workplace's restroom.

Before heading out for a bike ride, take a cool shower. Getting rid of the germs on your skin lessens bad smells.

Another tip I recommend is to use the bus system. You can bring your bikes on all city buses via the rack on the front. For long commutes it helps to bus/train part of the way then bike the rest of the way.

For grocery shopping, you can actually do that on a bicycle pretty easily! I can't recommend these enough, I use them to grocery shop and they are very sturdy and can carry 2 big bags of food:

Just get some baskets and a rack on your bike if you don't have one (most bike shops can do this for you). I have these baskets for grocery shopping and they're effing awesome: http://www.amazon.com/Bushwhacker-Omaha-Bicycle-Grocery-Pannier/dp/B00B4ZKZK0

They fold up when not in use and you can keep a reusable bag or two in it

Get yourself a belgian waffle maker and do it yourself. Just using one of those and straight-up HEB Pancake/Waffle mix I've made some dynamite waffles, fresh as can be. One of these and you're all set: https://www.amazon.com/Presto-FlipSide-Belgian-Waffle-7-inch/dp/B000TYBWIG

Those in combination with this spray will clear out that infestation, at least in your unit.

u/z64dan · 2 pointsr/Austin

I bought this for my car, it connects with bluetooth and transmits over FM:

https://www.amazon.com/GOgroove-FlexSMART-Transmitter-Multipoint-Hands-Free/dp/B003PPGOC0

Of course, this wouldn't help with Waze or anything like that...

u/happywaffle · 3 pointsr/Austin

A good starting place would be "Traffic" by Tom Vanderbilt. But all you need to do is watch the behavior of beans falling down a chute to observe the exact same behavior (see my other reply).

u/defroach84 · 2 pointsr/Austin

No idea how well these things work, but it may be worth a try....

I actually purchased an air purifier and I think it has helped some. I just got this model on amazon because it's highly reviewed - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004VGIGVY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you won't want to use the suction cup mounts and your vents aren't broken like mine, this looks promising, too:

Read "Traffic" . It changed my mind about a lot of traffic ideas.

While I read this as a hilarious hyperbole. Are you aware there are people (lots) who genuinely believe in this? I just read this book and it is a trip https://www.amazon.com/Them-Adventures-Extremists-Jon-Ronson/dp/0743233212/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1505506795&sr=1-3&keywords=jon+ronson+the

Can't recommend this thing enough:

Also, there's tons of products out there for cat allergies, wipes, gels, etc.

u/ph3l0n · 6 pointsr/Austin

Try this: https://www.amazon.com/Lisle-19860-Tire-Deflator/dp/B002NEUOGG Just un-screw the cap, screw this on, let it deflate, re-apply cap. No one will know the difference.

Only problem I have with a windshield mount is that it gets hot as fuck here. I've had my phone go into thermal shutdown in a windshield mount.

I'm using a clip that sits on my AC vent right now.
