The length limit really puts a damper on things. I say go to Walmart, sporting goods stores, and get online and shop around to see what best fits you. I do have some recommendations, though.

  1. There are very respectable brands such as Buck, Case, Kershaw, Gerber, and more. They’re popular for a reason.

  2. Hunting knives are second only to military knives and daggers when it comes to blades for self-defense, and they’re the best type of knives in terms of versatility. A Bowie knife probably wouldn’t be legal for you, but anything with a wide blade, sharp point, and a well- made handle that fits your restrictions will be your best bet.

  3. Your hand has a natural shape. Try and handle some knives to get a feel for what is comfortable. Hint: it usually looks more like this

    and less like this

  4. I know serrated edges look cool and sound really dangerous, but unless you plan on using your 3.5” knife to saw some branches off, they’re more trouble than they’re worth. If you do get a serrated blade, make sure it’s a saw-like blade that runs the entire length of one of the edges. If you’re carrying it primarily for protection, a sharp, smooth edge is your friend. A clean wound from a sharp, non serrated blade bleeds more freely. Serrations only make the wound more permanent and actually decrease blood flow from the wound.

  5. Stainless steel, high-carbon steel, surgical steel, “Damascus” steel. These are all the same thing. Stainless is cheap and rigid, making it perfect for cheap, usable knives. The only problem with stainless steel in a knife is the fact that it’s almost impossible to sharpen with a stone (which I recommend you learn to do) due to its hardness. It takes longer to lose its edge and is very strong, but is also brittle. If your stainless knife chips or is damaged, it’s nearly impossible to repair. If you’re looking for a higher quality knife that will last your entire life, get something made of good tool steel like O1, D2, or A2. These steels are hard enough to hold an edge for a long time, but they’re not so hard that the edge can’t be sharpened. The problem is that it’s more expensive and less common nowadays than stainless, so you might have to do some digging.

Lastly, ask around for someone that can make you a good, custom-made knife within your price range. $100 is a lot for a knife, so I’m sure you can find something.

    Happy hunting!

I just used one of those sites for an ESA letter for my pit daisy, I wasn't even considering getting her a vest but this post convinced me to.

She'll be sporting this when we're walking past the neighbor who had the biggest problem.

Might snag one of these bad boys too lol
