We have never had much luck with not pulling - it’s just part of their nature if a squirrel is around! We try to allow as much time as possible off leash in safely fenced areas. We use the martingale collar linked below (size small fits a full grown B). It’s wider so at least distributes the stress over a wider area. We did use a front clasp harness for awhile but our breeder told us it was bad for their shoulders so we stopped. Biggest recommendation for leash training is consistency - every single walk is a practice opportunity. Use a string cheese or other high value treat and teach the pup when they’re not pulling and when they’re looking at you is when they will get rewarded. There are some good YouTube videos on this - it’s very important to reward at the right time.

I use this kind also to walk my half basenji 3 year old. I'm not sure if she has the same shape as yours but I also have it on pretty loose. Maybe the vet used it tighter than what is comfy for this breed. My girl has a broad chest so it has to be pretty loose. Other than that I also have to stay on a 6' leash so she doesn't build any momentum. Mine also took to a few commands while walking really well. And lastly you could try this other gentle leader model. It's really popular around where I moved and would not chafe, though I haven't tried it (just because I'd used the one I have now before I adopted my pup) but I would try it.

My basenji has shown exactly zero interest in deer antlers, kongs, and nylabones. Per some advice on /r/dogs, I get him Bully Sticks. They don't smell very good, but as long as you pretend to not know what they really are they are a good treat for the dogs. Unlike rawhide they are completely digestible, and since mine isn't a big a chewer I don't have to worry about him eating too many.

It sounds like he really likes toys he can destroy. My basenji is the same, he's only interested in the stimulation of being able to "solve" a toy. I found that a puzzle toy was really engaging for him, since it gave him an outlet for his creativity(?)

Yep. Something like this . After we’d make a behavior correction, say via a little tug, and got the correct response, we’d tell her good girl, then made sure it was loose again. It’s not helpful if it’s always cinched tight.

This is a fantastic book. Highly recommended.

I derped. Our harnesses are Puppia, but we get the jackets are from RC Pets.

RC Pets does have a similar harness, but I don't like the way it's designed.

While I'm at it.... we get their collars are from Pethub.com, and their leashes are from Lupine as lupine leashes are guaranteed and replaced free of charge, and we can get them in colours that match the jacket/harness.

Our basenji loves this toy...

It has this mesh material underneath that keeps it together, but the toy itself is soft and really adorable. We have a graveyard of dead toys, but Dragon lives on. :)

One of ours has a sensitive stomach as well. We started adding Entero to her meals. It definitely helped, but we still noticed loose stool from time to time, so we switched to Hill’s and the problem has been basically eradicated. She has awful anxiety so sometimes when she gets too nervous or excited we’ll notice it coming back but I don’t believe it’s diet related. The Entero has also done wonders for her gum and teeth health. Those things are white as can be!

For treats we do the Better Belly Rawhides, Milk Bone Minis, and Freeze Dried Dog Treats. We tried the real meat bones and they were a huge failure. Our dog loved them but they gave her all kinds of stomach problems. We stick to these religiously now, with the occasional peanut butter Kong ball. Dog flora is incredibly sensitive to diet changes so I think consistency is key.
