This is the stuff I use. I think Whole Foods or some organic store would probably have it, too. I don't really know about what brands are better, though. I'd recommend it: it smells amazing, and it has a lot of uses. :) (Just don't put it on your face; it can cause pimples. :P)
I buy the medium-sized version of these jaw clips:

Then gather my hair at the nape as though I'm going to put it in a low ponytail, then twist it together, and twist it up into a pseudo-French twist. The curls then spill over the top of the clip in a very stylish, but neat, way!
I forgot to add that I love using [Chalk Pastels] (http://www.amazon.com/Pastels-Drawing-Scrapbooking-Assorted-Colours/dp/B000BKYB2M) for this. This is the same exact thing as hair chalk, only 100x cheaper.
