Doctor Who Christmas specials are a regular in my home... Season 5, A Christmas Carol, and Season 6, The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe.
Both are accessible to non-fans. You only need to know the Doctor travels in time and space in his blue police box. In A Christmas Carol, he's saving two companions who you only see at the beginning and end of the episode, and their purpose is clear.
