I've got a number of books I can suggest.
This one's a great history of the sport in the bare-knuckle era, 19th century sporting culture, and the transition to modern boxing.

Probably the best boxing novel ever written. I can't believe this isn't a movie.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Professional-W-c-Heinz/dp/0306810581
The book that got me into the sport when I sat down to read it at a Borders Books when I was 16. An awesome overview of the history of each weight class with over 400 photos and illustrations.
http://www.amazon.com/AN-Illustrated-History-Of-Boxing/dp/0806522011
An excellent anthology of fiction and newspaper articles.

The guy spends a little too much time bashing other martial arts, but it's an excellent read about how boxing is useful in a street fight and old school bare knuckle techniques.

A superb series of observations from a woman who has spent her life watching boxing. One of the more literary attempts at explaining the primal appeal of a boxing match.

I'm not home and don't have access to my library right now, but let me know if you want a few more. I'd say that any one of those is a great gift for a boxing enthusiast. /u/Choccybizzle is right, Four Kings is awesome, and /u/zombiezs suggestion for The Sweet Science is a good one as well. There's a lot of boxing books out there, but you know your friend so you'll know which of those will appeal to him the most.
This piece is by Carlo Rotella, who is one of my favorite boxing writers out there. His book of boxing essays, "Cut Time," is absolutely excellent and some of the best writing on our sport I've ever read.
I've read this biography of Gene Tunney, which also contains a fair bit on Jack Dempsey and of course, Cinderella Man.
Personally, books about the good old days of boxing interest me far more than any of the modern stuff you see written. It's amazing to see the amount of respect the sport had back then and how boxers were the celebrities of their day. Anyways, I read Cinderella Man first and then Tunney's bio, but if I had to do it again I'd start with Tunney's story because it'll give you a good background on a lot of the fighters mentioned in Cinderella Man.
The Las Vegas Boxing Hall of Fame has a video on their Youtube channel of this. It's absolutely clear Gans is better than the smaller man.

A good Gans biograpgy is The Longest Fight

The statue 10 shots in was used on the cover of "The Pugilist at Rest" by Thom Jones, an amazing collection of short story fiction with some awesome boxing stories.
Maybe it was because I was in high school and could relate to the protagonist more, but I really enjoyed The Berlin Boxing Club. It's a loose backstory to when Max Schmeling saved two Jews during Kristalnacht.
Dempsey's book would be my first recommendation, and I see Obesely already covered it. It was just posted here a few weeks ago in full text on scribd:

Also, I remember liking Joe Frazier's book: http://www.amazon.com/Box-Like-Pros-Joe-Frazier/dp/0060817739 It contained a lot of good info that would help a beginner...
... as long as that beginner also joined a boxing gym, spent way more time shadowboxing than hitting the bag, and did at least a little sparring to get a feel for how to put it all together under pressure.
Go and read his autobiography. Actually, don't. Read the reviews for his autobiography on Amazon.

Great coffee table book! Starts at 1900 and goes up to 1992ish. Wish there was a sequel but it really helped me learn the history of the game when i was a kid.

by Norman Mailer
The Barfighter

and
The Gloves: A Boxing Chronicle by Robert Anasi

Anyone who thinks Wilder's side was the one who prevented this fight is willingly deluding himself and is forfeiting away all their objective credibility.
AJ promised to sign for $50m. Wilder made the offer so Hearn threw doubt at it and asked for proof of funds, which Finkel offered to Barry, but Hearn turned down and claimed to have never asked for and stopped pretending a full contract was necessary before major terms were agreed to (which itself was a nonsensical request, in modern boxing negotiations, contracts are always drafted AFTER the basic/major terms are agreed to by both sides).
Having been cornered, Hearn then admitted the concerns he had over the offer's legitimacy were met. Hearn then pulled out the excuse of AJ suddenly wanting a UK fight (after months of negotiations for a US fight) out of patriotism (and wanting to stay in the UK and only fight there and promising to fight his next two fights in the UK) before signing Jarrell Miller at MSG lmfao.
And now that the wanting to stay in the UK excuse didn't make sense anymore, Eddie went back to saying the offer is fake, meanwhile Barry Hearn is tweeting that he's happy they turned down the $50m because of judging concerns. And now this WARREN FUNDED THE OFFER conspiracy seems especially silly with Sky being granted exclusive UK rights under the offer sent and rejected by Hearn.
The conspiracy itself never made any sense in the first place, Finkel was very clear that Warren's only involvement was being asked to do market research on the profitability of the fight itself in the UK so that they could better assess how much they stood to make and how much they could offer/pay for this fight (considering Sky's obvious conflict of interest, asking them was an obvious no-no). No one from Wilder or Warren's side has ever said anything along the lines of Warren funding the offer itself lmfao.
This is your only argument in the face of lots of other evidence? It's possible that Ali was scared (think he admitted this later) but it's also an established fact that he psyched Liston out - I know it might be difficult for you to comprehend two somewhat contradictory statements but there you go. Unless you're trolling, before you go making inflammatory posts on the internet, I suggest you ahem...'perform some simple research'.
