I just went to Brazil to visit the family who hosted me as an exchange student 15 years ago, and several other families and friends I haven't seen in 10+ years. We brought presents for the kids (ages 2 months to 8 years) and the families (6 couples).

For the kids:

  • Sticky Frogs (dollar store)
  • Spot It
  • Lobster Pool Toys
  • An Avengers towel
  • An Ever After High water-painting book
  • Polo-brand baby outfits (from Marshalls or somewhere like that)
  • Some pocket change for each kid (literally just some nickels and quarters for them to show off to their friends)

    For the families:

Each family got a couple of things.

  • A pair of nice silicone spatulas from William-Sonoma
  • A USA-shaped bamboo cutting board (from Marshalls or somewhere like that)
  • A moose hot pad
  • Monkey-Cymbol Salad Grabber
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Imperial unit measuring cups and spoons
  • A collection of our favorite treat recipes, including Pancakes, Sugar cookies and chocolate chip cookies (to go with the semi-sweet chips and measuring cups)
  • Maple extract/flavoring

We stayed with 4 different families over 9 days, and we made a recipe for/with each family. Pancakes w/ maple for some and cookies for others.

We also brought a collection of treats. Unfortunately (for our gift giving) many of them are available in Brazil now including kit-kat, reeses and snickers. I even saw Peanut-Butter in a grocery store while we were there!

Everyone seemed excited about their presents.

I'm from the US and presently in São Paulo taking engineering classes taught in Portuguese after studying the language for less than 6 months, so I can share a bit from my experience:

Learn basic grammar/vocab from textbooks, read the news in portuguese (globo.com, folha de S.Paulo, etc) and create a vocab list from words you don't know, watch youtube videos from brazilian talk shows (the noite), meet someone who speaks the language (or read articles outloud to yourself if you can't find someone), find some brazilian music you like.. these are some of the thing I did.

Also, BrazilianPodClass is a great podcast to look into. For a grammar text I recommend the following + the complimentary workbook. I find it to be excellent:

http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Brazilian-Portuguese-Grammar-Practical/dp/0415566444/ref=pd_sim_b_1/192-2892797-9687731?ie=UTF8&refRID=0YS5KBCGWRDAYP8JE154

I never found a good cohesive vocab book, so just created my own lists.

Hope this helps! Boa sorte!

edit: Also, it's a beautiful language and I find it fun to speak, so I think you made a good choice! It's not easy to learn by any means, but it's worth it IMO

I'll keep it short, since I have other things to do.

  1. As you should know if you read the links, the brochure is just a summarization, (made by third parties), of the detailed work contained in this book.
  2. Meanwhile, your "real data" still says nothing that actually contradicts what I wrote.

    Edit:

    > ...so it makes no sense to say that the income equality is more beneficial than economic development.

Again, that's not the assertion! I'll try to say it for the last time. The claim is that income equality is more beneficial than further economic development specifically for the rich countries. Notice the word "further". In other words: if we take the countries that are already rich, from now on they will benefit much more from increases in equality than increases in GDP. (The same is not true for poor countries. Poor countries still need both: more growth and more equality).

I only know books in English, but the Cambridge history books have been amazingly detailed resources so far:

Colonial Brazil (Cambridge History of Latin America)

Brazil: Empire and Republic, 1822-1930 (Cambridge History of Latin America)

The Cambridge History of Latin America (Volume 9) (I haven't bought this because of the price)

A wonderfully fun book:

Historia de uma Viagem Feita á Terra do Brazil ( I read the English version )

It's not in Portuguese, but it was a great book nonetheless:
Brazil on the Rise: The Story of a Country Transformed

I highly recommend A Concise History of Brazil, by Boris Fausto, which was recommended to me by my History teacher when I was a senior in high school here in Brazil. It's very accurate and it's also an enjoyable reading.

What about scientific articles on Brazilian foreign policy, are you up to that? You can search both on google scholar and on scielo.br (national database for brazilian papers) using the keywords "Política Externa Brasileira" "Barão do Rio Branco".

Editing: This is a really good book, yet again in portuguese. http://www.amazon.com/Pol%C3%ADtica-Externa-Brasileira-1889-2002-Portuguese-ebook/dp/B008PX5RUW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1412644044&sr=8-1&keywords=pol%C3%ADtica+externa+brasileira

One more thing occurred to me. If you guys are ovo-lacto vegetarians, I bet she would love some pão de queijo (a very cheesy bread). You can buy a mix from amazon, which might not be ideal but will do in a pinch: http://www.amazon.com/Cheese-Bread-250g-GLUTEN-FREE/dp/B00563VAD2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1332965165&sr=8-4
