Anything super perishable and that can be frozen, can be stored with dry ice. If you use a smaller cooler, and rarely open it, it will keep a good long time, frozen solid. We had frozen bacon in a cooler last year that stayed frozen until at least thursday with dry ice. No real special handling other than not opening that cooler.

Most things can just be stored in a cooler with ice. Maintain the ice, keep it stocked up, and you'll be fine. Do not let food items get wet, keep them in zip lock bags. Keeping your ice in large zip locks is a good idea too, as it can be used as potable water when it melts. Ice melt in a cooler is nasty stuff.

I don't see why you couldn't wash and dry quinoa. I have no experience there, but a good washing and some time in an oven should get it bone dry. Bag it and keep it cool.

Veggies will be fine. Try to wash them before hand, put into ziplocks and keep cool. Onions and tomatoes wouldn't need to be kept on ice, just kept out of the sun and kept cool. Put on ice if really needed. Cucumbers should be fine for the week in a cooler. Lettuce will be fine as well. Store unlike veggies in separate containers, as they ripen at different rates.

Really you should be fine, if you have good cooler management. Keep them off the ground and in the shade. You can wrap them in reflectix as well, this will add a bit of insulation to them. Make sure they close well, don't leave open or cracked. Keep frequently opened coolers (drinks, stuff like that) separate from storage coolers.

Here is what I did last year. All of it survived the burn, vinegar cleaning, various other washings, and is ready for the playa again. Fresh batts will be installed closer to departure time.

Wheel lights. Enough for once around a 26"dia wheel. Blue up front, red on back. 3AAs lasted all week.

Tail light, 2AAAs last all week, lots of settings.

Dual duty Head light and Holder 3AAAs needed changing at four days. I actually had two of these. ;)

I also had a flag on my bike with a battery operated GlowStick at the top.

The frame was 'traced' with Reflector Tape. When hit with light, it glows like Tron movie vehicles. Not my bike, a pic from the Jungle's customer pic gallery. I traced the frame and made connections just as the frame does. Gives a pretty cool effect. :)

Always bring extra batts, its good practice.

This is the fan I used for mine, it's borderline leaf blower status and fits 4" flexible dryer exhaust tube perfectly. Draws 2.5A. Highly recommended.

Using a float switch is also a good idea, so you don't run it dry and burn out your pump.

The more holes you can drill in the bucket (without compromising its integrity and leaving a reasonable volume for water at the bottom) the better. More surface area means more evaporation.

I had issues with mine leaking the first year. I found I had much better luck cutting the outer pad so that it's pushed against the inside of the bucket. I put the vinyl tube hoop on top of the inner pad, and tied it with thread so it can't move. It doesn't leak at all using this method, as the outer pad only gets damp by soaking up water from the saturated inner pad. And it works better, because there is no gap between the pad and the bucket for air to go through, it has to all flow through the pads.

I'm single, but let me tell you about my Heaven Bed. You might not find a more comfy option. I bought a shikifuton from Amazon and repurposed a 3" full size memory foam pad. The shikifuton is only wide enough for one person, so you would need to get 2 (it saves space over air mattresses). The luxurious part is taking the cheaper 3" memory foam, using a box cutter to slice it in half, double stack it... now you have a perfectly fitted 6" of memory foam.

It's more comfortable than my bed and is worth the price. The foam can be squished down to very little.

No Steven is definitely not family. He used to be the editor of the Bay Guardian and came up under Tim Redmond and therefore had great access to Larry. His political beliefs are pretty out there (no surprise) but he is a nice guy and he writes well. The Tribes of Burning Man is a pretty good read.

Lookin' good!

A couple of things I'd say -

  • Look for a better headlamp. You'll use it every year (and whenever you go camping), so get a nice one. Spending a little money here is ok.

  • Get some industrial quality particulate filters. These look kinda lame, but they will save you from weeks of feeling like a 3-pack a day smoker post-burn. Get a cool dust mask cover to put over it if you'd like or a bandana.

  • Chap stick!

cloud 9 bike seat for 25 bucks - your butt will thank you!

If you have sinus problems & access to power running a small humidifier with essential oils (Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Peppermint) makes a huge difference.

If you're sensitive to noise (or camp with a sound camp on the esplanade) silicone ear plugs are amazing for sleeping. Instead of sticking them in your ear, you use them like putty to seal your ear canal. Way more comfortable, and lets you lay flat against a pillow. Usually they're reusable, on playa each pair tends to last one night.

For you ladies... a sheewee and a pee bottle is the way to go. No more late night trips to the portapots. I have this one because the open design lets me clean it with a baby wipe. Make sure you practice at home first.

These are super cheap and almost too bright to look at. Bought a bunch to sew inside light colored clothing and wrap on bike. Am very happy with the results.

These are even cheaper, not so retina frying, and good for wearing on outside of costume.

I'm so over the last minute, impulse purchased el-wire ready-to-wear kits that I've had spotty luck with. Less than four dollars for an LED light string? That's insane, and cheap enough to pack a few spares without adding too much to the "suddenly costing you more than you planned" budget.

u/advice47 · 1 pointr/BurningMan

I bought one of these 10-packs and it was awesome, I kept 2 in my bag, the rest packed up at camp, and you can definitely reuse them so I have about 6 unopened ones left to use this year. It was comfortable, light weight, took up very little room in my bag, and far superior to a bandana for keeping out the dust.

I actually really love battery powered LED christmas light strings. I've found them at stores like Fred Meyers as well as on Amazon.... They're decently bright, super-portable, and I haven't had as many problems with connections as I have had with el-wire. That being said, it's fun to do a mix of el-wire and LED christmas lights...

This is the one you want: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0010YZ4HE/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00

We did a double-monkey, and used two of them to great success :)

I would recommend getting a few of these 5 Gallon Water Coolers which you can fill up for pretty cheap at any local supermarket before getting out to the playa. When you buy ice for your food/drink cooler have these 10 gallon ziploc bags ready to pour the ice into. Once it melts and your ready to buy more you can pour that 10 gallon ziplock bag into one of these and bam! ice cold water, also reducing the amount of water you need to carry in - which means WAY less plastic water jugs.

I just ordered these, which have good reviews. Hopefully they're awesome.

Sweet, I highly advise one. Harnessing the playa winds with a kite is veeeeery enjoyable and handing it off to a passerby for a spin may just top it off. I have one similar to this, and it rocks. Hoping it has a little more power than a standard one to lift up my camera...

I'm pretty happy with mine but I think I'm going to build a much bigger one for next year. I've already got a big crazy fan on it ( http://www.amazon.com/Rule-240-Marine-Blower-4-Inch/dp/B000O8D0IC ), and I think more airspace inside the cooler would help

If you want a really good look into the history of BM and a behind-the-scenes type of view, I highly suggest checking out Scribe's (author of the article) book "The Tribes of Burning Man" I've been a burner for 5 years and there is SO much that I learned from his book. It gave me a new-found respect for many aspects of the event that I just didn't have any info on.

Get a boat fan -- they're waterproof, 12V, and they put out around 200cfm. Also, they have mounting options that make it easy to connect a 4" duct to. If you use those 120mm computer fans, you'll have to make a duct and mount. Here's an example boat fan: https://www.amazon.com/Attwood-1749-4-Blower-Resistant-4-Inch/dp/B003EX02DA/

I met someone special at Burning Man and I wanted to get them a Burning Man related Christmas Gift. I am torn between this book, which ive read and liked, and the one linked to this post.

Let's not overlook the very first Mutant Vehicle ever on the Playa: Pepper Mouser's Mobile Living Room. I don't think it was on-playa this year, since Pepper is recovering from knee surgery, but it has been a staple from the very beginning. I rode around on it making daiquiris for everyone on-board with a bolted-down blender on burn night 2006...that was the first and only time I met Flash too... Good times. And if you don't know who Flash is, you should go look it up.... Know your history, young burners!

thank you for this! I actually ended up buying a sport kite a day ago - will McGyvre the Gopro to it since I cant have a kite mount shipped in time!

Just clip a couple of these to your backpack. Easy peasy.

u/wolvie604 · 1 pointr/BurningMan

A few little things that have become essential for my burn:

  • Ear plugs for dancing: https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-Research-Protection-Earplugs-Standard/dp/B0044DEESS. I can still have conversations with these, but they block the most harmful frequencies. I haven't had next-morning ringing ears for years after discovering these.

  • Neti pot. No explanation needed.

  • Tennis ball on the end of your kickstand, if you care about your bike staying upright when you park it.

  • Vitamins/Supplements: 5-HTP, Ginger Root, good multivitamin (NOW brand is one of the best), Zinc.

Maybe her hours were misstated? That seems most likely. Or perhaps she doesn't really need the money and just loves Burning Man. She (Jennifer Raiser) authored "Burning Man: Art on Fire" last year.

Non mobile link.

If you can get some coverage and/or wind breaks, it should be fine. But with the flat sides, you basically have to ask, "Can I run full force into the side of it and have nothing break?"

Also highly recommended: This is Burning Man by Brian Doherty.
Fantastic detailed history of the origins & early days, from the Suicide Club, Cacophany Society, then Burning Man.

led string lights amazon

these have a simple on/off switch and are very visible, they have colored ones but since you are going for non rave wear I linked the white one

u/bad_tenet · 2 pointsr/BurningMan

I used this however I am going to go with a 6 person Coleman.

We are using these Japanese style roll-out futon cushions this year. I have these at home for guests. Air mattresses on playa have always been leaky for me with the big temperature fluctuations. These are very comfortable--although not bouncy if that's something you're after. In future years if I decide to go fancier I will add memory foam mattress toppers but seriously, this thing with regular bedsheets and a couple fluffy blankets and pillows is like a cozy pillow pit. Totally low maintenance if you have the space in your truck (FYI, the twin size rolls up about the size of one of those big flannel sleeping bags from summer camp, maybe 2 times the size of a deflated air mattress).

u/jillsy · 2 pointsr/BurningMan

I've used these cheap OTG's for 3 burns over some very large sunglasses with no problem.
