Oh my fucking god, you just reminded me that she kept this book in the house when I was a kid and would suggest I read it whenever I was lonely and tried to get attention from her. When I said I didn't want to do that, she'd say, without even looking up, "Well then I don't know, but figure something out and stop bothering me." Who the fuck talks this way to ANYONE???
I'm so, so sorry you went through this hell too. Neither of us deserved this. I hope you treat yourself now (or are trying to treat yourself) just like how you should have been parented in the first place. I hope that when you're hurt, you comfort yourself and thoroughly tend to your wounds. I hope that when you're hungry, you make sure to feed yourself healthy foods that will make you big and strong. I hope that when you accomplish something, no matter how small, you let yourself get excited and enthusiastically congratulate yourself and celebrate. Because you truly deserve all this and more.
I have so much trouble with these things myself still because I've long since choked off my sense of need for them. When I get hurt, for example, I just think "Oh" and then ignore it, if I even register it at all. I find big bruises on my body all the time with no recollection of how I got them because I just don't let myself dwell on pain when I feel it. I just move on, because that's exactly what I was expected to do growing up. "You're fine, you big baby. Just walk it off." But, I'm really trying to learn to give myself these things I never got. Sometimes it's hard to even identify what I should be doing. It's hard to know what you don't have when you never had it. But, I'm trying. I really hope you are too. You truly deserve it.
