If you’re new to cat ownership then I’d really recommend the book Think Like A Cat for a great intro to the ins and outs of cats!

Jackson Galaxy’s Youtube channel is also a great resource for cat owners, you may benefit from his video on how to properly pet your cat. .

It would also be a good idea for you and your kids to brush up on cat body language,, as it can be very different than dog body language (which people tend to be more familiar with).

It sounds like you don't have a cat any more, but they make cat doors with microchip readers for this use case.

Amusingly, the features list mentions that it has "simple one button programming for up to 32 cats", so I guess it's useful even if you are the neighborhood kitty collector.

this cat litter from Amazon. I have to order the 40lb tidy cats when the Dr. Elsey's is out but the Elsey's is much better... There's barely any dust and doesn't smell like anything, clumps better, overall better

These work really well to minimize the appearance of scars. Also, maybe check out r/SkincareAddiction.

I want to believe Kitty felt terrible about hurting you, but I know better. Glad everything worked out for you two, though.

Used to have that same model and one of our cats always found a way to get food out of it with her paw or by just knocking the whole thing over.
Ending up getting a different model and has been working great:

Looks like it went up slightly in price, I pad $79 for it.

I'll let you in on a little secret. Saved many a pretty thing in my house which is filled with cats:

It won't save everything, but it helps a lot.

Cats also love running water, they make drinking fountains for cats just for this reason.

Cat shelves may be an option if you have an empty wall or two or a doorway you wouldn't mind having a cat bridge crossing, and either are handy yourself or have access to someone who is, or have disposable income.

All that to say this: here are some ideas for you if they're feasible.

PS: Please accept my apologies if none of this interests you and also for the insanely long links. I don't know how to make shortcuts.

We had house pooping problems with both our cats, and we got one of these litter boxes. The cats loved them more than their old clay so much they never pooped in the house again! And it uses these blue crystals which are actually desiccant. Keeps the smell waaay down, and the best part is NO POOP/PEE DUST when you’re cleaning.

The litter refills last quite a while so we end up spending about the same amount on litter as before.

I highly recommend one of these. We have been using them for 5 years and set them to go at around 2 am. It seems to be the optimal time, and it makes almost no noise! Plus the cats can’t figure out how to get into it.

LPT: Candle warmers provide flame-free scent and prevent singed kitty parts. Also useful for leg wax if you're so inclined.

I think he means something like this it basically portions out the food and dispenses it at certain times usually its to prevent cats from getting overweight or helping them lose weight.

Please, for all that is right and holy in the universe, get a covered litter box. (Not just for the scatter, but for the sight and smell as well)

We use this for food storage. Our youngest cat has... issues... with food and can worm into just about anything.

Me too. I found this on amazon: Wacky Waving Inflatable Tube Guy (Miniature Editions)
