It would also be a good idea for you and your kids to brush up on cat body language,, as it can be very different than dog body language (which people tend to be more familiar with).

Cat shelves may be an option if you have an empty wall or two or a doorway you wouldn't mind having a cat bridge crossing, and either are handy yourself or have access to someone who is, or have disposable income.

We had house pooping problems with both our cats, and we got one of these litter boxes. The cats loved them more than their old clay so much they never pooped in the house again! And it uses these blue crystals which are actually desiccant. Keeps the smell waaay down, and the best part is NO POOP/PEE DUST when you’re cleaning.

The litter refills last quite a while so we end up spending about the same amount on litter as before.

I highly recommend one of these. We have been using them for 5 years and set them to go at around 2 am. It seems to be the optimal time, and it makes almost no noise! Plus the cats can’t figure out how to get into it.

LPT: Candle warmers provide flame-free scent and prevent singed kitty parts. Also useful for leg wax if you're so inclined.

Please, for all that is right and holy in the universe, get a covered litter box. (Not just for the scatter, but for the sight and smell as well)
