Thanks, I'll avoid the 80-100W, partially because of legality, partially because I'm worried about burning something out, but also because I believe a decent 55W will give a brighter light than the 100W if I get a good brand like you suggested.
I wonder how the Silverstar Ultras compare to the Bosch PureLight which got rated the best headlight bulb from Which. See here for the comparison:

According to two reviews at Amazon.co.uk, the Silverstar 2 (which is brighter than the first version) aren't as bright as the OSRAM Nightbreakers, which themselves aren't as bright as the Bosch PureLight according to Which.
Only 119 on amazon!!! I was nervous to buy it but so many 5 star ratings. Some say it's too slippery which I haven't found but one guy got one and wrapped it in leather so now he has a leather wrapped 1 lb steering wheel, which is still pretty cool

did you only bypass the core? so shouldn't turning the heater on still switch open the piping that would normally lead to the heater core?
at any rate I recommend a radiator fill kit like this: https://www.amazon.com/EPAuto-Radiator-Coolant-Filling-Funnel/dp/B01I40ZQWE then you just set it up and run the engine until it warms up (heater switch at least turned on a bit to open it) and this allows your coolant to be higher than the rest of the system which forces air out.
