Everything's FINALLY arrived. Had my Wiitar for weeks now, but unfortunately I couldn't use it until the adapter arrived.

Ordering the adapter was a hassle and a half. Placing the order was super easy, but Amazon decided to cancel shipping after a few days and not inform me of it. I checked my Amazon account a couple of days before delivery was due and found that the package had been returned to sender without my authorisation.

For a domestic package I wouldn't have minded, as it would only add maybe one or two days to the whole process of getting a product from Amazon, but I'd been waiting over a week now for the adapter to come and I wasn't having it. I contacted Amazon customer support to find out what happened, but from their end, the package was still coming to me. I was escalated to another customer support rep, who told me that the only option was to refund the cost of the adapter and to buy a new one. Great. I asked them what had happened and she did some checking and then came back and told me that actually, I couldn't have a refund, and that I'd have to wait several more days to see if the package actually arrives. Fucking fantastic.

I pressed and managed to get the refund after talking to customer support for over an hour. I tried to get them to compensate me by upgrading the shipping for free (literally 3 quid) so I wouldn't have to wait over a week again as a result of Amazon's mistake. This was when the customer support rep started getting rude and cutting me off, and ultimately terminated the session. Never had that happen on UK Amazon... (And no, the original product never did arrive).

Anyway, I got my refund, and was very happy to find that the seller of the adapter on Amazon had discounted the product, so I ended up paying roughly the same price that I originally paid but with upgraded shipping this time. Still an utter waste of time and money, but hey, Amazon does that sometimes.

The adapter finally arrived today. Forgot to mention: also had to order a USB extension cable off their Amazon Basics line. Got the 3m one - seems decent enough quality.

Total cost?

  • Got a REALLY solid deal on a new in-box Wii Les Paul on eBay - £0.99 plus an extortionate postage charge of £6.99, so £7.98 all in all for a pristine Wii guitar. Not bad at all (usually the new ones go for about £30 - not sure why no one bought this one, cos it's definitely not a fake).
  • Bought this female to male USB 2.0 extension cable for £4.47. 3m, so it's long enough that you can plug it into your PC and move around with it or whatever. Can't complain about this at all. I have use for this anyway, as my current USB cables don't stretch far enough when I game with my PS4 controller just in general. Could've bought a longer USB cable, but I can kill two birds with one stone with this.
  • The adapter... Amazon tells me that I spent a grand total of £24.01 on this. The controller is garbage and not worth using, but the cable works well. If you don't buy the upgraded shipping, you'll probably spend around £20 instead. I'm hoping that Amazon refunds me the import charges, as by UK law the product isn't eligible for any import charges due to the price.

    Total cost: £36.46.

With Raphnet adapter, it would have cost (including imports etc): £48.10

Lesson learned: just buy a fucking Raphnet adapter. I saved 12 quid lol. Admittedly, I overpaid for shipping, and I'll probably get import fees refunded, which would bring the cost down to about £29 if you were to do this. And you probably wouldn't have the same hassle that I had with the Amazon adapter. All in all, though, the adapter works, and I've got a sweet, sweet Wiitar to play, so I'm not really that disappointed (assuming the adapter doesn't crap out on me...)

If you can afford to spend maybe an extra £20 for the Raphnet, just do it. It's really not worth the hassle trying to get a good deal. In the future, though, if I ever need a new guitar, I don't have to worry about buying another bloody adapter - I can just buy another Wiitar off eBay, and hopefully for cheap.

£37 is also almost exactly how much I spent on my new in-box Xplorer, so make of that what you will. I'm not sure if Xplorers have gotten any more expensive since I bought mine. I can't really give any impressions on how the Wiitar compares to my Xplorer, either, as I've only set up the guitar and made sure everything works at the moment. I've not done any proper playing. I can tell you that the Xplorer was very awkward to play due to the shape of the body, so I had to do this weird leg cross over thing to get it to sit nicely on my legs when sitting in my chair. It seems like that's the main complaint people have with the Xplorer, and I've seen Randy do almost the exact same leg cross over thing to get his Xplorer to sit properly on his lap. Also, I ended up with a gen 1 Xplorer which apparently had crappy frets. Mine did, so I messed with the fret pad (the slit mod where you slit the sides of each fret) and got them playing excellently, but unfortunately I overcut and they only lasted a few months before blue and orange started occasionally sticking under the slits I cut - hence why I'm buying a new guitar.

Oh, almost forgot: I haven't figured out how to get whammy to work yet, but this is also a problem with the Raphnet adapters. I probably just need a tutorial.

Clone Hero is guitar-only at the moment. Your best areas are going to be thrift stores like Goodwill, Savers, and the likes, as those are hella cheap there. From there try things like Facebook Marketplace, LetGo, and OfferUp. Ebay is a last resort as it will usually be a bit more pricey there.

USB is a weird thing when it comes to these guitars. For being straight-forward you can go with either an Xplorer or a Rock Band 1 Stratocaster, as both can be wired. Get a breakaway if they don't come with one, then it's plug and play. Next up would be wireless Xbox 360 guitars, like a Les Paul or a GH5 guitar, but you'll need a wireless adapter like this. It's a little pricey, so make sure you have a working guitar before you go this route. Then there's the Wii guitars with the Raphnet adapter, but that's a little overkill for just getting into the game.

I know I just said CH is guitar-only, but if you want to do drums later on (or now with Phase Shift) Xbox wired/wireless drums function the same way, and for some reason PS3 drums are wired USB and are plug-and-play, so there's that to keep in mind as well.

Good luck!

If you don't have anything right now, I'd get a Wiitar and the Raphnet adapter. 360 Les Pauls (possibly any 360 GH guitar? I've heard 360 GH5 guitars are good as well but they get a lot less attention) are the best you can do wirelessly AFAIK, and the cost is basically a push given that a 360 wireless adapter and a 360 Les Paul is generally around the same price (maybe $10 more expensive) as a decent Wiitar and the Raphnet adapter. From what I understand, PS3 guitars are to be avoided.

I'd honestly just go to a thrift shop or some garage/yard sales and see what you can find and go from there. 360 guitars are still a good option even if the Raphnet adapter + Wii guitars are slightly better latency.

There was some misinformation a few months back, the Elecom adapter is not compatible with guitars. Had a user saying it was with no proof, and a bunch of people went out and bought them.

There are two that are known to work. One is by Raphnet, and I'll have to find the other one, give me a but to edit. I still fully recommend the Raphnet adapter when it goes back in stock.

Edit: this one supposedly works. Had a few people on here praising it. Just need some sort of USB extension because it's short.

Still recommend the Raphnet adapter because it's long enough and plug in play, plus you can download the drivers and get 2ms latency.

u/HarryPotterRevisited · 2 pointsr/CloneHero

Also check craigslist. Can't really go wrong with any of the guitar hero guitars expect live if you want to play the standard 5-note charts. Xplorers and les pauls are generally well liked. Xplorer is the only one thats plug and play, others need this as they are wireless.

You wouldn't happen to know where I could get a Wii controller from do you? Input lag on Playstation controllers is a biggy for me so that's definitely a no-go. I was originally going to buy an X360 controller but I haven't found any as of yet. I found a 3rd party version of the Wii Les Paul on Amazon but I'm not sure if its trustworthy or not.

If you're looking for a guitar I would recommend either:

  1. Wired X-plorer
  2. Wireless Guitar Hero 5
  3. Wireless Les Paul

    I would avoid:

  4. Wireless GH: World Tour guitar
  5. Warriors of Rock guitar
  6. Rock Band guitars (except RB4 guitar has improved I'll give them that)

If you get a wireless guitar get this for your PC:

    https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Authentic-Wireless-Receiver-Windows/dp/B00FAS1WDG

Just make sure it's an Xbox 360 wireless controller if you go that route.
u/backlash64 · 3 pointsr/CloneHero

Any Xbox 360 guitar will do (provided you have the Xbox wireless adapter) but lately Wii guitars have risen in popularity due to an adapter popularized by Acai. It's currently sold out, but another shipment is due in about a week.

u/Jloe01 · 2 pointsr/CloneHero

If you get a ps2 or wii guitar then the best adapter you could get is a raphnet adapter on their website.https://www.raphnet-tech.com/products/wusbmote_1player_adapter_v2/index.php this is the link to the wii one, but it's out of stock right now. https://www.raphnet-tech.com/products/psx_to_usb/index.php and here's the link to the ps2 one.
If you wanna get a 360 adapter then you'll need to get an adapter like this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HZFCT2?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share it doesn't have to be this exact one. I got this one, but only cus it was used. You can find similar ones that should work well enough.

u/xPunkXRockx · 1 pointr/CloneHero

those don't run on my school laptop, all i can run is glovepie and Clone Hero, i just need a script that works with this third party wii les paul i bought from amazon, i tried Gh3.Pie script, but all it does is tilt for star power, none of the frets or strum bar or start/manual starpower work... help! https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Guitar-Wii-Games-Color-Nintendo/dp/B004QSY97W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1519627301&sr=8-1&keywords=guitar+hero+3+les+paul+wii

u/TMulharin · 1 pointr/CloneHero

If you can't find a wired controller, this receiver will work with all wireless 360 guitars (except for the 6-fret Guitar Hero Live controller, which has it's on special dongle).

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/CloneHero

The buddies guitar on amazon is the only trustworthy one on amazon and it works with the raphnet

u/Voxic120 · 1 pointr/CloneHero

I unintentionally found a way to use my two wireless wii guitars with USB just today.

I bought this SNES controller at a nearby mall. It's for the SNES Mini but comes with a USB adapter for PC. The adapter so happens to be perfectly compatible with the Les Paul. It works flawlessly. Input lag is the same as my Xplorer, and it worked first try. The only thing I needed was a USB extension.

20$ for a semi-crap SNES controller and an adapter for most Wii controllers. I'm considering buying another one.

u/theendisnear_ · 1 pointr/CloneHero

I have it and it works perfectly for me. All you'll need to do is map the controls but that takes like 2 minutes. Though you'll probably need an adapter to make the circle thing into USB

u/Sellular · 1 pointr/CloneHero

A dolphin bar like this? And does my pc need bluetooth functionality ithout this or does this have bluetooth on it? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HZWEB74/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_gV68AbXH0A35N

Also, would third party wiimotes work?

u/megamachopop · 1 pointr/CloneHero

That does not work with anything other than the Guitar Hero Live guitars.

This is the receiver you need: https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Receiver-Windows-x/dp/B000HZFCT2

u/AlexsPerspective · 1 pointr/CloneHero

Not personally, but others have. This is what you’ll want: https://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-Controller-Converter-Sony-PS3-Controllers/dp/B000NJBD90. You’ll likely have to map the controller as well once in the game.

u/arunnano · 1 pointr/CloneHero

Here's a way around it, buy this and make it wired :)

u/answer4answer · 1 pointr/CloneHero

You need the wireless receiver
then the PS2 to USB adapter dongle

Btw it's not worth it. Too much latency to be enjoyable.

u/dino0986 · 1 pointr/CloneHero

They should both work, the one on the left is a World Tour guitar (WT), looks like its a 360 one. So you need a controller adapter.

Any wireless guitar should come with a dongle, if they don't have it included don't bother. The only exception to this rule is 6frets and Xbox360 guitars, 6frets need the xbox specific adapter, and a 360 gamepad dongle works with the 360 guitars.

u/iCeCoCaCoLa64tv · 3 pointsr/CloneHero

You actually can use a Wii guitar on PC using a program called GlovePIE, if you manage to connect it (which I recommend doing with this). Just do some Googling.

But if you want an Xbox guitar, you can either get an Xplorer, which is wired, or a Les Paul, which is wireless so you'll need a 360 receiver.

u/adrianamp · 1 pointr/CloneHero

I had a wiitar and i found this cheaper alternative for the raphnet adapter that has worked fine for me. it’s a $15 SNES usb remote that comes with the dongle you need for wiitar to usb. it has worked fine for me. it is short though so you would need a usb extension cord thing.

u/Ozmaister11 · 0 pointsr/CloneHero

This is the one i use and it works great. Ive bought others that dont work but this one does it.

You're looking for a Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows. I got mine from eBay, I'm 99% sure it's not a legit one but it works just fine. Be careful though, I know some people have had issues in the past and if you get a dud one you're shit out of luck. Official ones will be manufactured by Microsoft.

Here's a link to an official one on Amazon

I'm not 100% sure, because I haven't had to buy a dongle. However, this looks like something you might be looking for.

I got this. My wammy doesn't work, but no idea if that's cause of the guitar itself or the adapter.

u/harbouta · 1 pointr/CloneHero

Do you use this one ? It’s the one recommended on the CH wiki

u/Raitosu · 2 pointsr/CloneHero

Any run of the mill 360 adapter will work fine. This is the one I bought, however it was $15 when I bought it so I don't know why there was a price hike.

u/The_PattyWagon · 18 pointsr/CloneHero

Looks to be the breakaway wire for xbox 360 controllers. The usb end can be bought on amazon. Wired Controller USB Breakaway Cable for Microsoft Xbox 360 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07R7L8KJP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_vPtFDbWMDGB5K

You'll need one of these to connect your guitar to your PC.

u/ApogeeHardware · 1 pointr/CloneHero

I believe this is the other one they recommend. I'm unsure if it will allow two guitars simultaneously, but hey it's cheap.

u/OutsideOwl · 1 pointr/CloneHero

PS2/PS3 Rockband drum receiver wont work. you'll want this adapter

u/WakeC · 1 pointr/CloneHero

With wiitars the certain adapter you basically have to use. Has the lowest latency from the inputs to the game, more inputs mean more notes, and because of clone hero's weird engine, more fc's.

And depending on if it's an xplorer or a wireless. If it's an xplorer you want the "breakaway cable. " If it's a wireless one Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HZFCT2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_3PduDbX0XBBNC

u/EczyEclipse · 1 pointr/CloneHero

This is the one I got: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0096PSFBG/

Low latency, and whammy works. I haven't been able to get star power tilt to work with it though.
