24" Monitor is definitely the way to go if you're looking to take things more seriously and improve
There are a load that brand themselves as 'Gaming' and have a low response time, but in all honesty when it comes down to it there is no way your reaction time is going to be good enough to make the tiniest difference matter.
I use this (and it's awesome and cheap): http://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-VE247H-Widescreen-Intelligence-Technology/dp/B004T2LMP2/ref=sr_1_7?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1419868123&sr=1-7&keywords=gaming+monitor
For something a bit more expensive you could look into this (it's what the pros use): http://www.amazon.co.uk/BenQ-XL2420Z-24-inch-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B00HZF2MPE/ref=sr_1_15?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1419868178&sr=1-15&keywords=gaming+monitor
Don't buy into "gaming headsets". A nice pair of headphones with an external mic will give you way more sound quality. If I were you I would get:
Sennheiser HD 598's- http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Headphones-Accents/dp/B0042A8CW2/ref=sr_1_cc_2?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1414427164&sr=1-2-catcorr&keywords=sennheiser+hd+pro+598
Ear Force DSS2 - http://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Beach-Force-Surround-Processor-63043006306200/dp/B006W41X36 (not sure what is up with that first picture)
Zalman clip on mic - http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-Zm-Mic1-Sensitivity-Headphone-Microphone/dp/B00029MTMQ
Then you'd need an adapter to hook up a 3.5mm audio to whatever controller you're using. You can simply get a male 2.5mm to female 3.5mm adapter (won't give you chat volume control) or you can use something like this http://steelseries.com/us/products/outlet/steelseries-spectrum-audio-mixer-xb if you're using a Xbox 360.
This setup is almost exactly what I use and it's amazing. I use Sennheiser HD 380 Pro's and Ear Force DSS1.
Yeah, even if you put your TV into game mode, the delay is still pretty nasty.
THIS is the one that I'm currently using and I love it.

You need to get some type of Laptop fan/pad

I found the absolute best solution for me to use round cosmetic sponges (linked) for padding.
I use one on top of my left third finger and I hot-glued one on top of the left stick.
It's a wonky solution but two years ago I had submitted a thread about gaming making my hand hurt. Linky to that thread with reference pics
A couple of weekends ago, I did a 16-hour marathon gaming session and my joints started hurting. Ice pack in between rounds eased the pain.
Am I really stuck on absolute low settings with a good gtx580?! I don't even get good fps @ ultra low. I hope this driver update fixes this.
I have an i52500k and 8gb 1866 mem (got another stick coming because the game says I need more mem). I can play BF3 on absolute max... I don't understand?
