Please leave positive feedback on Amazon if you like them :D Thanks!
You might also want to check out "Beautiful Creatures" by Nicole Stocker (http://amzn.com/099486230X). They are grayscale images (not color by number), but the gray tones to help guide you while you color. They also have a gallery of colored images on their website (http://www.huelish.com) that you can use as inspiration or for help with color choices. I know it isn't specifically what you asked about, but I just recently discovered it, so I thought I'd share.
Coloring for Creativity
It's still just as cheap, and I have NO idea how. I HIGHLY recommend grabbing this book. A lot of pictures are two pages wide, so if you can handle the spine crossover, it's spectacular. I am madly in love with this book, and it has so many different beautiful patterns and animals and everything. It can be a bit intense, some of the patterns are pretty complex. But a good book overall.

Thank you. 😊 It's on Amazon !
I have Fanciful Faces published by Creative Haven (artwork by Miryam Adatto). I just started it, but I love that I can use so much color in each page. Fanciful Faces on Amazon
I have this as part of a 2 in 1 book I got at Michaels. I can't find the exact copy I have online but I'm pretty sure it's in this book too. https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Magnificent-Mehndi-Designs-Coloring/dp/0486797910
I like the Creative Haven Midnight series where there is a fair amount of pre-filled black in the pictures. Makes for dramatic coloring pages.

It’s [Pop Manga](Pop Manga Coloring Book: A Surreal Journey Through a Cute, Curious, Bizarre, and Beautiful World (Colouring Books) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0399578471/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_iFcIDbDTY62XT)
So I finally got back to that store. This book has colored-in examples, but they're all mandalas:

But they also had this one:

And apparently there's another one by the same publisher:

and this one!

Of course your results would not be identical, because colored pencils or markers are not going to look exactly like colored pages in books -- but I think having the illustrations would certainly help you get past the initial "choosing colors" block.
I have mostly been using this set that I bought from amazon. I did receive 168 markers, but one was a duplicate and one color was missing. I contacted the seller and they said they are sending me the missing one. So far these markers are working great. It was a bit pricey, but I wanted a lot of colors to work with.
I also picked up these gel pens from Costco for $14.97. I mostly have used the metallic ones for accents. The gel pen ink lays over the marker ink nicely.
Fantasia is great, and I've learned so much about doing skin tones working with it.
The books I have my eye on, but haven't tried yet are:
Fairy World Coloring Book Check out some of her other books as well.
Creature Incantante
Magical Beauties
The book is genetically called “Japanese Coloring Book”. I got it from Amazon

I just reread your post and for thick pages you're gonna want the Kerby Rosanes books
Mythomorphia: An Extreme Coloring and Search Challenge https://www.amazon.com/dp/0735211094/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Z8U5BbZ4VHDC8
Amazon. My sister got it for me for Christmas.

Here ya go!!
Seconding The Beauty of Horror (a second book just came out this month, so there are two of them now).
The Edgar Allan Poe book is also fairly creepy.
Here are some I don't own, but have on my wishlist.
