Yes I've read that book. Monroe and Buhlman corner the market, but the best author about OBEs is Jurgen Ziewe (Multidimensional Man) because he has a more concise picture of the astral worlds (AKA 4th density and higher realms).
Not quite spontaneously - it was more about finally overcoming the fear of the initial stages. You may feel electric tingles as your body disconnects, so you have to push through that and realize it's safe and harmless.
Lucid dreams and OBEs sometimes mesh together, but they're not always the same. The Crowley experience was definitely an OBE because I felt myself leave my body (in fact I felt Crowley gently tugging me out of it). Sometimes, however, a lucid dream is just stuff inside your subconscious, so you have to be conscious and have intent to go to a "real" realm and not one in your mind. Surprisingly, much of the "nearby" astral world is similar to this world but with a lot of added perks. I've been to bars and restaurants.

John Lear's mantra of living with integrity and without greed envy and hate has an fascinating background. The idea comes from a contactee called Sleeper (real name Lou Baldin) who spilled his guts about his contact experiences on ATS about a decade ago. John was a guru on the site and he openly backed sleeper's story despite the clear majority of readers dismissing it and openly flaming him. Lear believed him because so much of sleepers story and its details meshed with info that Lear 's sources had fed him but had never been made public. They became friends over time and Lear has talked up the importance of sleeper on C2C and other videos.
His story is radical for mainstream ufology but not for the cosmic disclosure audience. In short, he's had ongoing contact with ETs who have taken him around the solar system, taught him about reincarnation and that many people on earth aren't from here originally and that there is a struggle between the forces of light and darkness over the future of our neighbourhood.

I'm currently reading his latest book which is about an ancient war between the people of Mars and its neighbour which led to Mars being turned into a desert planet and the other planet being turned into the asteroid belt.
