For #3, watching games in person or on TV helps, especially if you try to call the shot before they do. That being said, I really enjoyed the Gabrielle Coleman book on intro to curling strategy. Unsure what your curling conditions are like, but it was helpful for me because I curl on arena ice, and it was a good read for me when I skipped my first game at a bonspiel at a dedicated club, since the strategy can be really different with different ice conditions. (The book helping me understand strategy when the ice curls as you expect it to!) It has a lot of scenarios that you can work through too, and discusses why you might want to approach the scenarios in different ways. At the very least, it's helped give me a framework for end strategy, giving me a better sense of how to set up the front end's rocks to try to set up the rest of the end. Reading through general patterns of strategy have also helped me better understand what's going on when watching games on TV/online too!

I used to have the same problem with my trailing knee when I started curling.

As has been said, ideally you'll want to get to a point where your trailing knee isn't coming into contact with the ice.

That being said, as others have suggested using a knee pad until you get to that point is some solid advice.

For myself, I found a wrestling knee pad worked really well. It was comfortable, stayed in place, provided excellent protection, and I easily fit it under my pants. Plus it was relatively inexpensive. Here is a link.

So I think people make it sound harder than it is. I ordered this:

and

Then I made paper cutouts of the rough shape of the sliders I want, transfered that to the teflon (with sharpie or so). Cut it out with a saw roughly and then just sanded with 120 to more precise shape, 200 to make it smooth, 600 to "polish" and then some sheep skin for really smooth edges at the end. The velcro stuff glued on to it out of the box and so far after couple months of curling having no issues with it adhering either to shoe nor teflon. The etched ones were expensive. I switches shoes since so the slider isn't perfect shape anymore, but still works perfectly well for curling so far. I also bought 2-component glue and all kinds of fancy chemicals to make it stick better, but the Chinese velcro has some magic glue on it already. Don't overthink it and just give it a try.

P.S. with size 9, the 12x12 sheet was a bit tight, but should work up to 11 or so, depending what size slider you need. You can probably experiment with the hole in the middle etc. I also purchased these: https://www.stevescurling.com/product-p/sldisc.htm but they are a bit thin and don't slide fast enough imo, prefer the PTFE 1/4". Feel free to shoot me more questions, but it's really much simpler than it seems and a lot of people make it out to be.

A good ebook about sweeping (Brush like a Badass) if you're interested: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B013Q0V01I/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_J8x3DbMT5QBD9

I thought it was pretty good and inexpensive.

I had it capture 1 frame every 10 seconds for the entire installation, 24/7. I used two cheap GoPro knockoffs from Amazon and they worked flawlessly - I didn't touch them for 10 days straight. Just make sure you keep them plugged in and out of reach of icemakers :) Each had used about 10 GB on the Micro SD card. This particular camera encodes the video on-the-fly, which greatly reduces amount of space used. If your camera takes individual stills, you will probably have to dump the frames every day or two. Also, don't use your camera's "auto" white balance setting. Once the white goes down everything turns orange.

Most of the playback is around 60 fps (but I made copious use of the rate stretch tool in Premiere to get the music to line up with various parts of the video). Let me know if this answers your questions. Good luck!

John Morris and Dean Gemmell wrote a book entitled "Fit to Curl," which is chockablock full of recommended exercises for different parts of the curling game. The book has two key sections — one detailing various parts of fitness in the game (including cardio, building muscle, balance, flexibility, nutrition and mental health) and the other with a detailed training program for different levels of fitness and times of year (off season and in season).

Fitness is an area that I definitely need more work on, but "Fit to Curl" is a resource I turn to.

I use some BaLeaf running pants. Super comfy and have a fleece lining so keep ya toasty on the ice.
