Lately, I've been using these Castelli bibs. Theyre relatively inexpensive and pretty solid for the long haul. My only complaint is that the leg-holes (idk the proper term for this) aren't as nice as my Craft bibs.

My own personal preference is to use a ski balaclava. They're usually pretty well designed to be thinner under the helmet, thicker over the lower face.
I hear what you're saying on "ugly and suspicious". There's lots of designs that are less - threatening.
