Read Dachshunds for Dummies.
Watch kikopup on Youtube for tips on how to train.
Get on your hands & knees and look around for what dangers & attractions puppy will find/destroy, then remove them before he arrives.
Get a dog crate, and teach him that it's the best den a doggo ever had (eg, feed in there, sleep in there, etc).
Learn the Calming Signals that all dogs instinctively use to communicate with body language.
Join rawfeeding yahoo newsgroups to learn how to feed real meat, not kibble crap.
Join a local dachshund meetup group to socialize your dog as often as possible (eg, monthly), so he learns good manners & social behaviors. Take him everywhere, to expose him to your whole world, so he learns to embrace rather than fear it.
Love your puppy. He'll have to be housetrained, which WILL involve mistakes, and takes months to perfect, so please be gentle.
Let your dog be a real dog...which means don't pick him up every few minutes, and do let him sniff & play. Small dog syndrome (then nasty bites later on) comes from being overly protective.
Puppy school at Petsmart was very helpful for us. Ramps are good, stairs are not necessarily evil but best avoided when possible. We put 1 sofa cushion onto the floor so our doxies can climb up & down without danger to backs. We've only had 1 doxie "go down" with IVDD, and Dodgerslist (see RHS of this page) is a most excellent resource. Minis are less susceptible than Standards to back issues, but best to be cautious. Lastly, consider getting a 2nd one after this puppy gets a bit older, cuz they do better with doggie companionship rather than solo. Best wishes for your brand new furbaby. Enjoy him. He's precious. He'll make you happy too.

My dachshund, Doobie, is a little terror when it comes to toys. I've found two that hold up pretty well overall.

First, this is Doobie's absolute favorite toy but it never lasts longer than a few hours if I just leave it with him. So I'll only give it to him for play and take it away later to make it last longer. I only mention this one because he loves it so much. It does have stuffing in it, so beware of that. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EB9IV2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This toy is better because it has several squeakers, and it lasts a lot longer. It also has no stuffing to clean up. Though they will still destroy them. But I use this one to play catch (since you can throw it like a frisbee) and tug of war (Since it's easier for you and the dog to hold) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BT8K7J6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is the toy that I let him have all the time. It took him a year to destroy the first one. I don't know if it's because it's really that tough or because he's getting older. But I think it's worth a try. It's also really funny watching him carry this thing around the house since it's twice as long as he is. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003RQNE7U/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And the last, honorable mention: My dachshund LOVES this, and it's perfect if you are too busy and they really want to play or the weather is bad so they can't go out or get walked. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ARUKTG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I bought stairs for my bed for my little guy to get up and down, and even though he still could and preferred to jump I would scold him for doing so. I made him get used to the stairs. Now about seven years later (he’s twelve now) he prefers the stairs and when he does try to jump, which is not often (maybe once-twice a month when he gets the zoomies), he only has about a 50% success rate. Its much safer and much better for their backs. My gf is a vet tech and has seen many doxies come in with back problems from jumping.

I’m really glad I got him stairs. Please don’t let your little wiener be a jumper!

He is super adorable by the way :)

EDIT: he actually has two sets of stairs. He uses this one for going up and this one for going down.

I had to go through this last summer with my girl. We ended up having to do surgery. I don't know how/if you deal with her getting up and down from furniture I just wanted to plug a great product I found for a really good price.

These have been AWESOME and in all honesty probably saved her life because they finally got her to stop jumping.

Don't know if you need the link but I would rather you know than not know!

I highly recommend Puppia. They're nice and wide across the chest, and a bit padded. Two rings on the back for the leash, so you can choose how much control they have. My dachshund weighs 16 pounds, and we use a small. Hope this helps!

My old guy was way too interested in the cat poop too. I would suggest you get or make a top entry litter box like this one.

We bought our dachshund a cube toy similar to this one
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0002ARQYQ?pc_redir=1410409765&robot_redir=1

I think it was actually a little larger than that. And he was ably to use it. It took a bit of playing with him with it for him to get the hand of it but he got it. Now he will play with it to get food out even when he has food in his bowl. They do not work well if you have hardwood or tile floors though.

If he's barking when you leave the room and you're still at home, I suggest: puzzle toys like this, this, or this - it will keep him occupied and he will begin to cope without you in the same room.

If you're leaving him home alone and you're having issues, I suggest hiring a dog walker with excellent reviews to stop in every day. Check Rover.com or any local pet walking site. And take him to some obedience classes! Depending on the dog, he might really like the interaction with you & it could cut down on him having excessive anxiety.

Quick Google search found it on Amazon. :)

We use a Puppia harness and it works well. We do 2-3 hour hikes with our little guy and it doesn't irritate his skin or armpits. We don't however leave it on all day, when he's in the house he's naked, and if he's alone in the house he's got his collar with his id and rabies on. If we leave the harness on all day, then like other harnesses it rubs some fur off and we prefer that not to happen.

Total nester. Only ever sleeps under a blanket. He thought it was a toy at first but I made him go inside and then it kinda clicked.

This is the one I bought. It was the cheapest one I could find. I think I'm gonna run it through the wash though, it smells a little factory-y.
