Former collegiate lady lead here. I led all styles and didn't have to worry about changing, so I had some fun with it. :)

I'd say try not to upstage your follow -- less-bold colors, less sequins, less stones than them -- but otherwise wear whatever you're comfortable in and just have fun. If you're leading Latin and you prefer a skirt, I think a black practice skirt (either short or long) or a simple black fringe skirt (probably short) could be good. Personally, I preferred pants, and eventually got myself a pair of salsa pants like these for Latin. They were very fun and coordinated with my partner's dress, which also had fringe. Black yoga pants or leggings could also work if that's something you'd be comfortable with.

Good luck at the competition!

It's mentioned in the guide, but I wanted to call special attention to this

>If you want to buy only one pair of shoes, buy these. It is acceptable to wear them dancing Latin/Rhythm at a competition up until the Bronze level.

I would suggest asking someone at your studio/on your team, to see if you can try on their shoes, to get a feel for what size you need. Amazon has free returns on these. I have those, and really like them. They're starting to show a little age after about year, with the leather slightly chipping off in places, but other than that, they're pretty good.

I will also add that the leather expands a little with use, so its not a bad thing that the shoe is a little tight when you buy it. Once you break them in, they will fit like a glove.

Speaking of which, on Dec 22nd I suddenly realized I haven't got anything for my dance partner. I'll see her again on Jan 5th. Any ideas? I am thinking about buying this book for her.

Edit: Ordered it today in a bookstore. Will take some time for it to arrive.
