A friend gave me an idea for using some kind of netted-bag so that trash like bottles, cans, and other water-holding material can drain through the spaces while walking around. Some of the great things about this:

  1. Reduces the weight of the bag by draining liquids.
  2. Bag doesn't whip around so wildly on a windy day.
  3. Easy to clean and reuse (soak in a bucket with a small amount of soap.)
  4. Helps passerby visualize the kind of trash that is spoiling the area.
  5. Relatively cheap. Got a pack of three of these from Amazon for $13.

Hope this helps someone who de-litters in a wet/rainy environment!

I personally use:

  • This reacher-grabber . It's strong enough to pick up a brick but also can easily pick up cigarette butts at walking speed. It really is a back saver.
  • This bag holder. It has a handle and keeps the bag open(awesome for windy areas) but is a bit overpriced. I use regular 13 gallon kitchen bags from Costco.
  • A sharps container from Amazon. I personally don't have a problem picking up(and disposing) or sharps safely, but some people may want to let their city/town municipal workers hand that.
  • I also use leather hiking boots, bring water, and have a pair of leather work gloves that I rarely use since I never handle any trash with my bare hands.
  • I also use cut up cereal boxes(or any similar thin sturdy packaging) to make little disposable dog poop dustpans.

For instance, last night I collected (2) 13 gallon bags of trash in a span of 40 min walking/working 4 blocks (both sides) of San Francisco. I had just cleaned up the same area 2 days earlier. San Francisco (Oakland and Berkeley as well) has an overwhelming amount of street trash that is just not getting picked up. Even though the trash keeps coming you can see that the neighborhood looks cleaner, and I've had neighbors say so as well.

I bought a three pack of these packets (not this ten pack) after I was hanging outside more with friends who smoked, and noticed them occasionally tossing butts. These are a really good way to break the habit if you do want to be more mindful. These worked great as what I bought, but I'm sure any other with similar ratings would work just as fine.

I go around with a grabber and this pop-up trash can. It accepts standard kitchen trash bags and weighs very little, so it's easy to carry around with you. Even being so light, it's strong enough to hold a full kitchen bag worth of trash and folds totally flat - it's also easy to hose off and air dry.

I'm not trying to be pushy about this, but you can buy a box of 100 non-vinyl medical gloves for pretty cheap. It's easy enough to toss a couple of those gloves in your pocket when you're riding.

I'd very much recommend the litter picker on the right of this photo, if you can find it in the US. Much stronger than the one on the left, grabby mechanism uses wire instead of nylon string, and works a treat on everything from little bits of wrapper to big glass bottles.

I typically head out detrashing with propose. Usually, it's an excuse to take the dog on a walk.

I bought this trash grabber (highly recommend this model): Unger Professional Nifty Nabber, 36” https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000V0AGS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_21LPBbTAQ9SW7

And I just bring 2-3 garbage bags and head on out.

Sometimes I'll empty my garbage bag into a dumpster while I'm working if I see a good place to do it.

As for locations, I'm in a city and I usually just do my neighborhood. And I try to do the "no man's land" zones, like the median, that otherwise rarely gets detrashed.

I really like this one. They're like tongs. $30 usd

Yes I just dragged it through the sand. Not very efficient (due to the shape/type of magnet I have), but I typically use my magnet in water, off piers. So no dragging, just sort of dabbing it up and down on the bottom. I just happened to be at this beach and wanted to see what I could find.

There are many shapes of magnets you can buy. If you want to drag it behind you on a walk, I’d recommend a double-sided magnet shaped like this:

These aren't going in postboxes normally. Newspapers go in a open front box, like this: https://www.amazon.com/Plastic-Newspaper-Delivery-Receptacle-Mounting/dp/B01997BYW2

I do too. The one linked above is crap, tho (no offense, commenter). The suction cups fell off almost immediately, & the springs are wonky.

This one (for less than $1 more) is much better:

Many of my objects are cigarette butts on a sidewalk. So I worry I would not be able to stab enough to catch, or dull the tip. And then I would need to get the butt off the tip into my 5 gallon drum. I have one of these coming today, hoping for a light touch:

And then the items you pointed me to.
