Dont scimp on the wheel. Get a good one.

Make sure they have toys; they love to stack things

Have an area in mind for free roaming. A bathroom can work in a pinch.

A blacklight for cleaning around their cage. I love em but they are mess little dudes.

A cheap toy is take an alligator clip and hook it to their cage bars.

If they aren't socialable at first, take it slow. They have a lot of personality and simply might be cautious.

Have a smaller cage ready for emergencies like a pair fighting and needing to be seperated or a trip to the vet.

A low watt heat lamp will be their favourite thing if you can set one up.

They aren't smelly guys but dont scimp on cleaning. Be prepared to sweep daily.

Simple brown crinkle paper ie https://www.amazon.com/Natural-Crinkle-Basket-Filler-Bedding/dp/B00QPOBDJW?ref_=Oct_CARAsinC_8147501011_0 makes for cheap bedding that they can dig through. Just make sure it doesnt have ink and is debris free.

Oilseed/sunflower seeds make for a great treat for them and are easy on the pocketbook.

Hi! That cage looks like a good size for two degus but my only concern would be the shelves - are they plastic? It's better to go for metal or wood because they chew everything and plastic may not be best for them! I will link the cage that we bought for the two degus we adopted - they love it and it's a great size!

Hope this helps

Thanks, woke up this morning and she was already eating! I'm looking after her closely and the vet will re-examine her on Tuesday. I'm annoyed that I only noticed (she was eating normally) because her nose had bled and she'd scratched it up (it's still scarred and I have to clean it as well as giving her 4 medicines each time - hoping she won't hate me for it!).

I have added 3 links (UK based, but showing similar wheels). I bought two a while back. I asked the office admin to source me a couple of flying saucer wheels in metal, so I need to find out from the office PC where they were sold!

Mine are labelled Wagner and came from Germany by airmail but they're the coated finish type with gentle ribs on the face. Only issue I've had is that both have needed new centre bearing attachments. The bearings themselves are pretty sound, but the screws and nuts that hold them in tend to tighten and seize (urine-doesn't help them!) so I've drilled one out and modified both. Having said that they are not too pricey and degus love them. Fur's been on hers almost constantly since she got back.

If I find the info on the manufacturers I'll post/send a link.

EDIT: I found the invoice. Googling the manufacturer brings up the running plate link I put first. The label's changed (just to confuse me).

The links above are to Wagner's website. It's in German (they're near Köln) and mainly bird bits, but there is a large variety of nager (rodent) stuff. It's priced in Euros. Mine was £34.90 in January this year with a £9.90 charge for post to the UK. From that and the time difference I'd guess it's the large not extra large, and probably the same one as currently on amazon. It looks to be about the diameter of a standard 300mm/12" ruler. The Wagner site shows 28cm or 36cm so there's a decent choice there.

Sorry for the long, long reply, trying to cover it all!

There is no way the degus can avoid each other if they want to so please add a full level with 2 holes as passages.

Also Degus need wheels. Get one asap.

Will do but won't last. I've reinforced ours with an additional layer of wood glued at the front. A wheel is the single most used and loved item by Degus.

One of our large pet chain stores sells them which I suppose has increased their popularity slightly. They aren't common though! People still look at me confused when I say what they are. Try this: http://www.amazon.com/MidWest-Critter-Nation-Animal-Habitat/dp/B001NJ0DAY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449847947&sr=8-1&keywords=liberta+explorer+cage

There are multiple types of critical care. You can buy the correct kind off of Amazon. It's got a green label and is formulated for herbivores. It doesn't have any added sugar or fruit in it. This link should be right: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B012OPSSKW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_PtcKDb9S83AJK.

We use a clip together shoe rack like this to make a play area - https://www.amazon.co.uk/VonHaus-16x-Interlocking-Storage-Shelves/dp/B00D45VXRC

Do you have any floor space in your bedroom?you could make a fully enclosed play space out of this stuff, and/or lay a cardboard floor with it so they aren't touching any of the carpet.

To minimise fights, (and because ours get slightly different diets) we got ours used to eating out of two separate bowls on different levels of the cage. To start with they would both eat out of one and then the other, we had to physically block in between them with our hands to seperate them.
