Great book on the subject of removing crewman and repairing tanks during WW2.

Firing from head on, the anti-tank guns could have penetrated the Shermans from over 1000 yards. Of course the gunners could have been distracted/inexperienced/scared, the scenario is plausible, but having them seemingly manned by storm troopers sounds a little unrealistic to me.
If this is the book you're referring to, there's a lot of debate as to whether the author's statements beyond his personal experience are worth considering.

A lot of newer material is still coming out of the Soviets archives. It is showing how important Lend-Lease was to the Soviet war effort.
I'm taking this from "American Tanks and AFVS of World War II" by Michael Green, which quotes a USMC report titled Armoured Operations on Iwo Jima dated March 16, 1945.
> The enemy practice of tying aerial bombs to a yard stick mine is an expensive method of mining. Their policy is to completely demolish the mine as distinguished from the German policy of merely stopping the tank with the mine and destroying it by gunfire
I was going from memory, which explains why I added "Torpedo warheads" to the list of things used to boost AT mines - I don't have any evidence of that happening, so feel free to disregard that part.
> if a Russian does it, it's 'looting'. It's like black people vs white people looting
Not true. The Russian military forbade looting, especially from dead Germans. Well, after the turn of the war when the Russians were better supplied, at least. I'm sure that before Kursk, looting was free for all. But first hand accounts from the war show that when Soviets would wear out their boots and try to loot some from dead Germans, if caught by a sergeant or someone higher, they would be threatened with death.
