The book was Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are by Frans de Waal

You shouldn’t think it from the title of the book, but it’s actually a pretty objective look at the way delusions/distortion in the human brain (mainly re: idea of human exceptionalism) interfere with the way people interpret animal behavior.

I felt like the book was an attempt to “right size” the distorted ways people view animals.

The reference to dogs/cats hijacking the neural pathway for parenting was a really small reference in the book so I don’t want to mislead but overall I really enjoyed this book and was going around saying “did you know...” for days lol.

They do take a little time to get used to, but definitely better than listening to barking. I have tried a few different brands and these work best for me.

Welcome, you definitely found the right place! If you are determined to keep the friends then you might want to set some boundaries, eventually they will get used to you never agreeing to kiss their dog on the mouth (!!) when you come over and stop bringing it up if you are firm about it. As for the bed, if talking to them about it isn't an option (and it is definitely your right to not let the dog sleep with you) you could try using something like this which isn't audible to humans and will chase the dog away.

i'm sorry to hear about this. as a person who's worked the graveyard shift, and needed to sleep when everyone else is awake, here's some things i've done to get the sleep i've needed.

  1. wear earplugs while sleeping. not just the foam ones you find in stores, but contruction/shooting range quality silicone ones. i use these, they work great:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0024X13CK/ref=sxr_rr_xsim_1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=3008523062&pd_rd_wg=q3SaG&pf_rd_r=7ZZEACT3AP7VMV2Y4E1Z&pf_rd_s=desktop-rhs-carousels&pf_rd_t=301&pd_rd_i=B0024X13CK&pd_rd_w=JdOs1&pf_rd_i=ear+plugs+silicone&pd_rd_r=VS3V26MAXJ8DBYBKEJQ0&ie=UTF8&qid=1500665877&sr=1

(for maximum comfort while sleeping, take out the green plastic core part, that part is stiff)

  2. white noise generators. i have them on my macbook, iphone and ipod, ready for any situation where i know i need sleep. use them with a set of earbuds, and you'll be able to block out most noise. sometimes i play the whitenoise app on my macbook speakers while wearing the above earplugs.

  3. construction/shooting range earmuffs/headphones. i have a pair of these, and they can be used in conjunction with earplugs, and this model can be used with your phone/mp3 player and a white noise app for extra noise blocking potential. not the most comfortable thing to wear while sleeping if you toss and turn, but useful nonetheless.

    https://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-1030110-Noise-Blocking-Earmuff/dp/B004U4A5RU/ref=sr_1_9?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1500666111&sr=1-9&keywords=construction+headphones

hope these suggestions help... they've helped me quite a bit in noisy situations where i've needed to get my rest.

this is an astute comment. I looked up the news article and the dog was returned to the owner who has to pay for the car and received a warning.

It really sucks for the cats but this was probably the best way of handling it.

I recently watched the documentary Of Dogs and Men that focuses on cops + dog shootings which gives a nice even perspective and while this dog was being aggressive, when you see what other types of cases cops are in, you realize this was one of the best ways to handle it to prevent risk of bullet ricochets or amping up the aggression (the only other solution I might have wanted to see was the cop asking the woman for a leash and just seeing if he could get the dog on the leash).

If there’s no way of getting out of the client now, these may very well be your new best friend.

My parents had a dog before I was born. the dog chased a motorcycle, got hit and died. Lol. I've been thankful for it doing me that favor for about the past 25 years.

Anyway, I recommend this pepper spray gun

Get one of these bad boys. Now THIS works like a charm. I can step over it if I don't want to open the gate, but it keeps the dog out while my cat can walk through fine. To me, 40 bucks is totally worth keeping my carpet and bed free from dog hair.

Door Buddy Baby Proof Door Lock with Adjustable Strap (Grey). No Need for Baby Gate. Child Proof Room with Litter Box While Cats Enter Easily. Installs in Seconds and is Simple and Convenient to Use. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YQ79GC6/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_9Nc0DbB1Z4SP1

This thing works great. We got one for our door to let cats in and keep small children out. I highly recommend it. If this doesn't solve the issue, I'd put the dog in the owner's room and close the door. Let them deal with the mess.

The ones I described don't cost much.
https://www.amazon.com/Caldwell-Electronic-Protection-Amplification-Adjustable/dp/B001ASWCP2/ref=sr_1_62?keywords=electronic+hearing+protectors&qid=1554190602&s=sporting-goods&sr=1-62
I guess you could just put ear buds in and put a manual set over. If the dog's barking was loud enough to trigger the sensor you could set these so you could hear what was going on but not hear the dogs. A hand clap is loud enough to do it.

Try a contact transduction microphone like what is hooked to an acoustic guitar. It records surface vibration.

https://www.amazon.com/Acoustic-Contact-Microphone-Transducer-Mandolin/dp/B06ZYH4RRN/

Stick it to the wall, and use a a female-1/4” to male 1/8” (3.5mm) converter or use a separate male-to-male 1/8” stereo mini plug to connect it to the Mic or Sound-In port on your computer sound card, and record using a sound application.

This should help clarify the audio from your video. Submit them together. One is from a higher quality microphone.

Sorry you're having to put up with tis Broken pa.

I personally like the little hand held doggee dazers. They dont hurt the dog, and owner will have no idea youre doing anything.

I have used a similar one on 2 really bad dogs that were being sicced on me before. The dogs stayed about 10 feet from me, still barking, but it was like an invisible force was holding them back.

Horns such as these are supposed to work but I haven’t tried them

u/daemose123 · 11 pointsr/Dogfree

Until something is done about them, try using one of these to get to and from your truck. It's just an electronic dog whistle.

A good friend would never let their dog violate your body without permission. If their dog did it accidentally, a good friend would pull their dog away and apologize. If any dog jumps and slobbers on you, you can spray its face with Pet Corrector from Petco, which is compressed air that makes a loud hissing sound at https://www.reddit.com/r/Dogfree/comments/8lxbes/why_would_you_bring_your_aggressive_dog_to_work/dzk1j1q/. Another solution is an ultrasonic dog deterrent such as https://www.amazon.com/Dog-Dazer-II-Ultrasonic-Deterrent/dp/B000IBRI2Y. It produces a discomforting but not harmful high frequency sound audible to dogs, but not to humans. The problem with the fanatical dog culture is nondog people are too passive and let themselves be abused. Even parents are more respectful because I've never seen parents glorifying their children lunging at strangers, slobbering on them, and scratching them. If a kid tries doing that, their parents promptly pull them away in embarrassment, chastise the kid, and apologize to the stranger. But dogs doing it is not only acceptable in western society, but it's fanatically worshiped AND we're expected to adore it. However, I'm very direct with my anger towards dog fanatics. I tell them, "I do NOT give a FUCK that your dog likes me." Nondog people have every right to refuse to be so violated by dogs and their shitty owners. Fighting back is how we can prevent the toxic dog culture from growing. How would your friend like it if you jumped all over him and slobbered on him? He probably would not appreciate it, even if it was your way of showing affection. Therefore, his damn dog should NOT do it either.

Dude, I dont want to paint you as totally disconnected, but that is what is going to end up happening . This:

Dude, doing this would make me look like a huge asshole. I know they're wrong, but if having a cordial conversation doesnt get the issue resolved, then just "not going to his house" is the option I choose over this.

It's not right. But I prefer to keep friends over letting shit eating poodles destroy my relationships (and I know I AM NOT the one destroying it, but doggo fanatics will let that come between us)

u/larkasaur · 1 pointr/Dogfree

But you could also have suddenly encountered a child running around. Or a row of people walking side by side. Or a moose :)

A bell doesn't seem like a good answer. Bicyclists are legally required to have a horn or bell in my state, and I do have a good loud horn. But I think of it as an emergency device to signal a car driver who doesn't see me.

Just slow down when you get to a blind curve, and be aware that anything might be right around the bend.

u/ImScaredofCats · 10 pointsr/Dogfree

I wouldn’t bother wasting your energy on someone’s else piece of shit, a speaker similar to this one will do the trick;
