Yes but M50x is the top of the line that you should get. It's also the most stable and popular one out of all, the others are kinda the "little brothers" of M50x.

I have had my pair for 7 years now, not even the x version but the older one and they are superb.

Few things I'll say off the bat though: Buying SRH840 EARPADS and replace the default m50x's ones is going to change your life. They fit perfectly and the comfort is so much better.

I had to take off the m50x after an hour or so as my ears starts to hurt. Once I bought the 840 earpads I could have it on literally all day without even noticing it's there. Such a massive difference.

That being said, despite M50x being incredible and fucking amazing for the price you're paying, it's also designed for mixing use, so it might not have the biggest soundstage or listening experience. It's amazing for hearing details, and has a nice bass. But I think there could be, not sure, something out there that is more based around soundstage and a wider listening experience, maybe lacks more in details but gives you a better party going in your ears.

But at the very least I can confirm that M50X is better than any other MX with a lower number. My brother has a M30X and the 50 completely blows it out both in sound quality + comfort.

Everyone here is making this so unnecessarily complicated. I just picked up DJing last year myself and it's not hard to start at all. I did quite a bit of research on what DJ controller would be the best for someone who is just starting, but also wants to have something more than a simple mixer.

  1. Build a music library and download Serato

  2. Import your music library and organize it to your liking.

  3. I bought a Pioneer DDJ SB2 and it's awesome. You can do really basic stuff but at the same time you have the ability to do some higher level mixing as well.

  4. While you wait for your controller to arrive, watch this https://www.youtube.com/playlist?annotation_id=annotation_2381793899&feature=iv&list=PLk1VCXHnvPLDLbKTvHacpo6tQDzp4OS38&src_vid=W1OCHTWqc_w. It's a full on tutorial on how to use your controller along with Serato.

Good luck and have fun! It's a blast to get into

I FORGOT you obviously need a laptop and some speakers. Any speakers will do, just make sure it's RCA output. Here is a cheap converter if you currently have a 3.5mm output.

This is a bit outdated but it's still useful from a historical perspective (came out in the early 2000s). The text comments might be a bit snarky but just listen to the music to get a feel for how sound has progressed.

There are a lot of rave documentaries from the last 20 years, a few of my favorites:

  • Pump Up The Volume: The History of House Music
  • Modulations: Cinema For Your Ear
  • Better Living Through Circuitry

There are a lot of genre-specific documentaries out there as well.

    If you're into reading:

  • Altered State is a classic read on rave history
  • Technomad is probably the most comprehensive (although wordy) academic overview of many different kinds of dance music cultures

If you really get into the culture, you'll learn that there is more to it than just music. ofc the music is the most obvious unifying element to everything, and people who really don't dig the music won't keep going to shows, but within dance music culture A LOT of different perspectives exist. Hip-hop itself is a part of electronic music culture, so you probably already know what I'm talking about.

For a local perspective: Australian Electronica: A Brief History

  • /r/electronicmusic is a good place for ALL electronic music
  • /r/aves is good for talking parties/events/festivals

IMO many key historical points in EDM history revolve around technological advances (e.g. the invention of the phonograph; innovations in recorded sound - including tape, stereo, and digital recording; invention and adoption of analog/digital synthesizers). Although there are specific time periods where EDM culture "explodes" (e.g. around 1988-89 (in the UK), 1996-2001, and ~2008-present)

Eh, not really for weed. Anywhere else is likely to crush the joint. I put all in my joints into a bag and that into another bag. When I got in, I threw out the nasty bag and kept the clean one. It wasn't too bad.

Wear shorts and tank/t-shirt/whatever is comfortable. Accessories aside from what I listed are gum if you plan on taking MDMA (gum is a good ice breaker either way), something to make sure your valuables are kept safe (pockets, bags, etc. that you can seal) and maybe some kandi and glow toys, if you're into that.

I would highly recommend a pair of good earplugs. I was recommended these, which allow you to hear people talking within your vicinity. They were ~$15 shipped to Ontario (clear, large size).

They sell DD merchandise inside and other vendors have booths set up if you want to blow cash on novelties.

Lemme know if you have any other questions.

I have used these Sony earbuds for years. They are a bit on the expensive side, but they are amazing. I've even gotten one of my friends to buy them after hearing how good they sound.

This is hands down the most comprehensive guide I've come across and it's taught me everything I know. If you post on /r/edmproduction this will be the first guide they recommend. If you can't afford that then here is a free guide that is also very good. https://gumroad.com/l/tldrmusic

Seriously, the HA-FX5 are my favorite headphones I've ever owned (Sony, Grado, Denon) because I found them right when I got into electronic and they're perfect for it. The highs are slightly tinny but mids and lows make it worth it. They'll also only last you about 6-8 months if you're lucky, but they're only $8-10 so I just buy another pair when mine is going out.

Just make sure to not buy on eBay. When in the states I would only buy from Amazon but down here in Aus I don't have that option and when I bought on eBay it was some super cheap shitty knockoff Chinese ones (which blows my mind, they're already just an $8 headphone, why the fuck would you counterfeit that???)

This is the type I have. Its easy to set up and works great, you can change how sensitive it is to the music. https://www.amazon.com/HitLights-Multicolor-Strip-Light-Controller/dp/B007RGRJ36

I went to a destroid show and I swear I lost some hearing from that PK sound system. Remember to bring earbuds everyone! They can be a life saver sometimes.

Musican earbuds will save your hearing and you can still hear the music just fine:

EDIT: I found out they actually include some of these at shows now.

I use 5 of these duct taped to roombas. I use one of these fog machines. Make sure to disconnect all your smoke detectors. Also, hide your cats; they go crazy for this stuff.

I listen to EDM all day long with these (I found em for $170 CAN)
http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-770-PRO-250-ohms/dp/B0006NL5SM

and this (amp required to power the 250ohm cans, $60)
http://www.amazon.com/Fiio-E10-USB-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B005VO7LG6

the E10 has a bass boost which kicks ass with EDM.

These also absolutely destroy my $350 open ear Sennheiser PC 360's!!!
