> just curious, as a book nerd.
I would love to be a book nerd, but I just don't have it in me. So, sadly, I haven't read Murakami's book. Yet. I've DEFINITELY read The Oatmeal, and HIS book on running.
> Why do you run Raisin? What do you like about it?
> So, what kind of stretches do you recommend before running? And after?
Here's where my practice and the consensus among the Running Community(tm) differ.
I haven't stretched in over 20 years, and only have two injuries to show for it, both of which were likely the result of wearing the wrong sort of shoes. There is a solid body of evidence that suggests that stretching is at best ineffective and at worst may contribute to injury.
That said, since your body is asking you for help, here are some solid quad stretches you can try. Except that last one - unless you're an experienced Yogi with zero back problems, fuuuuck that. You can also try a longer warm up walk and/or "butt kicks": going at a slow jog, but literally trying to bring your heel up to your ass with each stride. I especially like the butt kick idea in cooler climates, where you'll freeze your parts off if you're on the ground stretching.
> Cardio is awesome, but not for weight loss.
Love this and agree. My cardio is stress relief more than anything.
> increase the INTENSITY of your exercise.
This too. I'm glad I'm doing something right. So many women (myself included) fall into that "I don't want to get buff" trap. I read Thinner Leaner Stronger by Michael Matthews which is the woman's version of his Bigger Leaner Stronger for men and it really helped me understand the science better. My biggest obstacle is always time.
And I can totally relate that when I get to a higher lift, I feel so badass!
I'm fortunate not to have a libido mismatch with my spouse who is a marathon runner/triathlete, and my lovers are at varied levels of fitness. I haven't struggled to find partners, but that's likely due to a stunning personality. ;)
I tend to do this one with grilled, spiced chicken. I use a Spiralo too as it's really quick and I love the shapes you can get. Ok, just chop or spiralise equal amounts of (raw) courgette and cucumber. Squeeze any excess water out of the cuc and mix together. Chop some fresh mint and a little fresh basil and mix in. Squeese in the juice of a lime and around x2 tablespoons of 0 fat natural yoghurt. Mix it up. You can add in some cool cooked beans too. I like a few butter beans in there. It's a really fresh, quick and cooling one that works well with spicy food.
The thing that REALLY worked for me in the beginning and still does is how much water I drink during the day. I cut out sodas, juice, and anything that wasn't water or coffee and DAMN, the difference was insane. I take a 72oz keg around everywhere I go and try my best to finish it by the end of the day, and refill even. It keeps you energized, hydrated, curbs your appetite, keeps your skin looking good, and I mean, your body is 75% water so why not replenish with what it's made off. Also, it's free. Sign you're dehydrated is yellow urine- meaning toxins your body isn't flushing out. Urine should be clear. That would be my best advice- it's easy to make increased water consumption a habit. If anyone is interested in the keg here's a the link.
First of all have you read Murakami's book on running? just curious, as a book nerd.
Surely you've read The Oatmeal?
Ok ok first question. Why do you run Raisin? What do you like about it?
Now a less philosophical one:
So, what kind of stretches do you recommend before running? And after? I've noticed alot of stiffness around my knees and the muscles on the sides of my legs so I'm thinking I'm not stretching properly.
I don't know that what you described is an issue with the skewer tho, sounds more like just cooking with too much heat.
Personally, I only skewer things that are hard to manage with a pair of tongs, or roll around weird. Asparagus is one of those for me. Another skewer friendly food is shrimp.
Here is a nice set of skewers: http://www.amazon.com/Steven-Raichlen-Best-Barbecue-Signature/dp/B0007ZGULG
Key attributes: Metal, flat, and not too wide. Bamboo, wood, and round skewers just don't work for me.
I don't think I can recommend this book strongly enough:

Kelly Starrett also has quite a number of videos on YouTube and on his site, mobilitywod.com. But having that book handy is like having an owner's manual for the human body.

Oh, TV died long ago :-) ... but home internet, yeah, that can die or at least go on a drastic diet. I don't spend hours there, but more than the bare minimum some nights.
I'm taking Paleo Fitness as my guide for the next phase. Part of what I like about it is exactly that the routines are mostly not long slogs but can be broken up and worked into the day.
