There is a book out there about this very thing. It is the book that inspired me to start welding. Always thought it was too hard and too expensive. Lies. Go do it. This book can help you get going on the cheap. Worth buying but can also be found sometimes at your local library for free.

For the aerobars I used just a couple of stiff rubber shims that were laying around. The aerobars will pivot if you apply too much torque, but they're fine in the regular riding position. If it gets to be too troublesome, I'll just use some shims like these.

The greater shimming adventures were actually in attaching the lower set of handlebars, which I did by putting a stem on my stem. Shimmed that somewhat sketchily with a single semi-circular stem shim, which you can see in the photo. The lower bars are really just to hold the Ortlieb handebar bag mount. I could cut them down to 3 inches long if I wanted, but why give up all that real estate?

Got mine used for a season for far less...$90 maybe? I see them on Craigslist a lot. It's a bit more work maybe (especially when it's growing quickly since you have less leeway as far as max length and cut length) and you don't get the same laser-level cut but the crappy yard around this house we bought last summer has a nice dense green turf now and all of my neighbors have brown patches and leggy clumps of grass. Only thing we did was spread some compost mix around to level out some divots and start using the reel. For the .25 acre I have to deal with the silence, lack of mess and maintenance, and results definitely outweigh the con of the extra effort.
