Amazon all the way. With the exception of 2014. I got that on Black Friday at Best Buy for $4. Just be on a look out for the [Kraken blu-rays] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Vs-Gigan-Blu-ray/dp/B00I462XLG/ref=pd_sim_74_7?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=Q4NXP3Z44W4ZJK6AP4P4) and [The Toho Godzilla Movies Collection blu-rays] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Vs-King-Ghidorah-Mothra/dp/B00IQAUO2A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481679727&sr=8-1&keywords=godzilla+vs+king+ghidorah+blu+ray). The prices seem to jump to higher and lower over time. It's very inconsistent, so I just checked every other day to get the best deals. Lowest they normally around for is little over $7.
For [The Godzilla Collection] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Collection-Vol-Yuriko-Hoshi/dp/B000VXWK86/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1481679933&sr=1-1&keywords=the+godzilla+collection) I got it used at half price, BUT IT'S ON SALE RIGHT NOW FOR PRIME USERS, SO PICK IT UP.
Godzilla 1998 and 2014 are always cheap. Even without the Black Friday deal, it's still cheap on Amazon.
Godzilla vs. Biollante is tricky. There are multiple sources on Amazon. Make sure you get it from [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Biollante-Blu-ray-Koji-Takahashi/dp/B00LVZK1LG/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1481680064&sr=1-1&keywords=godzilla+vs+biollante+blu+ray). Cheap as hell.
Then there's Son of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. These two are extremely hard to come by, but the way I see it, here are your options:
Last but not least is King Kong vs. Godzilla. Now you can get the official blu-ray on Amazon for a cheap price, but mind you, this doesn't have the Japanese dub, only the English dub. It is for this reason that I purchased it from sumogorilla, seeing as I only intend to watch them in Japanese.
Well, there you have it. Hopefully this will help you on your journey in collecting every Godzilla movie out there. But I'm sure there are other methods of doing so as well, so keep an eye out for any tips and information! As time passes, the prices and sources will as well. But this is how I collected the films.
Good luck!
EDIT: Typing error.
Do you have a price range? Figures are nice because they are cool to place in your room and it is more fun to receive than a movie, poster, shirt, etc. The NECA brand figure for the new movie is pretty sweet. If you search NECA Pacific Rim, they have some awesome figures from that movie, too. Most Godzilla fans like Pacific Rim. The chibi sets are awesome as well. I have them in front of my computer. This graphic novel is really amazing, and I would even recommend it to non-Godzilla fans.
Here is "A Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series" by David Kalat. It's a good read that may help out a bit with you research.
As for my personal thoughts? Godzilla is a character which can be applied to a variety of metaphorical situations in which Humans are shown not to be as in control of their environment as they'd like to believe. It lends itself well to films on the human condition. People love stories about the weird, unusual, and monstrous, while also subtly analyzing the inherit complexities of what is means to live in conjunction with our environment. As such, Godzilla films have the ability to tick those boxes. People love to watch monsters fight eachother. It gives them the adrenaline rush and allows them to feel like something bigger than themselves is on their side. So that box also gets ticked pretty frequently.
If you want the best picture quality, absolutely go for Blu-ray. If DVD is good enough for you, then by all means go for it -- it's generally cheaper anyway. Some films are available in multi-format combo packs; if you're fine with DVD for now but might switch to Blu later, then it might make sense to grab those.
The rights are definitely all over the place. Here's a handy breakdown of who owns what. Those Blu-ray double features (plus Godzilla 2000) cover the Toho-produced films from the '90s and '00s.
Criterion has released an excellent DVD and Blu-ray of the original Godzilla from 1954, which is an absolute must. Other than that, as far as we know, they currently own and are apparently working on discs of the rest of the Showa Godzilla series except for King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, Godzilla vs. Hedorah, and Godzilla vs. Gigan. (They also own Rodan and War of the Gargantuas; no word on whether those specifically will be released on disc.) We don't yet have release dates or official announcements for any of these films, and I personally wouldn't expect to hear anything before February, which is when their May 2019 releases will be announced.
If you just want to see as many of the films as possible and worry about the best available release of a given film later, here's a shopping list:
Of course, aside from physical media, there are always streaming options of varying legality as well as bootleg discs, but I doubt the mods would take too kindly to my posting specifics about those here.
Hope this helps!
I'm with you on this. I hope you and the rest of the SpaceGodzilla fan club have read the SpaceGodzilla part in Godzilla: Half Century War. Easily the best Godzilla comic book/graphic novel, and the SpaceGodzilla part is the best part of it.
Hi, everyone. Long-time lurker, first time poster. Thought I’d join the trend of showing off DVD/Blu-Ray collections, while also providing a buying guide and advice for UK fans (and fans generally).
First of all, due to the limited number of films released in the UK (Godzilla ’54, King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla ’98 and Godzilla ’14), if you want to own all the films on physical media you will need a multi-region DVD player in order to watch them. Fortunately, you don’t necessarily need to buy a new DVD player, as there might be a way to make your current device read and play disc from any region. I recommend having a look at http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks to see whether the make/model of your current player has a way to convert it to multi-region playback. Please note that these are based on user reports and have not all been tested or verified by the site, so discretion is advised. From personal experience, I have altered two (maybe three) of my own DVD players for multi-region playback and all are functioning fine.
Now, here are some links and details for each of the films/boxsets in my collection:

I hope you found this helpful. If you have any further questions, please let me know.
it's only $8, it's totally worth getting! great movie, great monster design with Biollante and this is also the 1st time it's ever been released on DVD or BLU!
I read a book while on my trip to Tokyo a few years back called Godzilla On My Mind that pretty much dedicates a majority of the book talking about why Godzilla's longevity and fame is interconnected with his ability to mold with the times as a pop culture figure. Fascinating read.
You need to read Marc Cerasini's series of books. These are probably my favorite Godzilla stories of any that are out there. Seriously Godzilla 2000 is amazing...
In the first book they reference the reason why he's in Japan but never fully explain it. Paraphrasing how Marc put it, it's his home territory. We have to think of Godzilla as an animal controlling his area. I think it's the perfect story behind Godzilla's reason to be in Japan. Godzilla is a wolf and anything that enters his territory is gonna get it.
Also in Dark Horse, Godzilla, King of the Monsters Special they take it in a different direction. That story says there's an artifact that is drawing all of the monsters to Japan. It's a cool story but a very different one for the big G.
Japan's Favorite Mon-star: The Unauthorized Biography Of The Big G by Steve Ryfle is pretty cool...

You could always get the Criterion release of Gojira/King of the Monsters. The rest are pretty cheap to come by, so it'd be good if you could knock that one out with a gift card.
Godzilla (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005VU9LKE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_rZ9yybSPPZBZM
I think as of right now the Target edition is the best bet, as it seems to have all the special features. I did a quick search on Amazon and came up with this baby. I hope this helps!
First of all, don't pirate anything. There are only a couple that you could really justify pirating, but there's no reason to start with those. If you're truly interested and want to support Godzilla, pay for the movies.
A good starting point is the DVD The Godzilla Collection. It contains the following movies:
In addition to the Japanese versions, all the U.S. edited cuts are included as well. However, I believe the original Godzilla is cropped to be widescreen, so if you want the original aspect ration, I suggest the Criterion release available on Blu-ray or DVD.
A good place to start for some of the more recent movies is The Toho Godzilla Collection, Volumes 1 & 2. This set contains the following:
Full disclosure, I think this collection is only on DVD, but all of these movies are also available on Blu-ray in various singe- and multi-disc packs. But if you don't care about Blu-ray, this is a great set.
This doesn't cover every Godzilla movie, but those two box sets are both pretty good ways to start, I think. If you have questions about specific movies or anything else let me know.
Godzilla on my Mind, by William Tsutsui
Picked this up almost ten years ago, and it was a pretty good, casual read.
These are the current American blu-ray releases and their links to Amazon:
Godzilla
King Kong vs. Godzilla
Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster
Destroy All Monsters
Godzilla Vs. Hedorah
Godzilla Vs. Gigan
Godzilla Vs. Megalon
Godzilla 1984
Godzilla Vs. Biollante
Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah / Godzilla Vs. Mothra
Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla II / Godzilla Vs. Spacegodzilla
Godzilla Vs. Destoroyah / Godzilla Vs. Megaguirus
Godzilla 2000
GMK / Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. / Godzilla: Final Wars
Shin Godzilla
The rest of the films are available on DVD, though some are out of print and are pretty expensive and hard to find.
Here’s hoping for that Criterion box set soon!
Because reasons.
It went OOP really quick and most of copies had an issue with the left channel audio on one of the surround sound options. So a rerelease this quick is actually pretty nice, even if it's just going to be basically the same release.

These are basically the best books on the series that are easily available, although the Tsuburaya book is really about the effects. As for the 3 films that really capture the original theme of the series, I'd say the original, Mothra vs Godzilla, and GMK are the ones that really hold the most important messages. All three of these were made by pacifist directors who renounce war and the actions of imperial Japan. The original Godzilla is an anti-war film, period. Mothra vs Godzilla is about harmony between nations. GMK is about keeping the past military actions in mind, in a modern Japan which is whitewashing it's war crimes out of history. Some people might say Godzilla 1984 and Shin Godzilla carry similar messages, but 1984 is more about the height of the cold war and Japan's place in it while Shin is about the need for a stronger, fast-acting independent government. Similar themes, but they're not really tied to the original as much as Mothra vs Godzilla or GMK.
Comparing the two is like one got Godzilla 2014 in their blu ray case while we got Zilla 98.
I mean I bought/preordered this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L8FC1QM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Am I happy about it? Not in the slightest but I'm a Godzilla sheep.
I'm set with the 12" MechaGodzilla and matching Godzilla. Those things are sturdy. Seriously well-made. I'm glad I got the Mecha-G when I did, because it "only" cost me $60 - it's going for twice that now.
Godzilla: The Half-Century War would make a kick-ass movie. Highly recommended reading if you haven't checked it out yet.
The cheapest used copies on Amazon currently go for about $50.
But Criterion might be releasing it and a lot of other classic Godzilla movies on blu-ray in the next year or two. They have obtained the streaming rights to these movies and had them available to watch on the Filmstruck streaming service. Criterion has expressed interest in obtaining home media rights too but they haven't officially announced anything yet.
A coworker got it for me at our Christmas party but I found the exact same one on Amazon

Does anybody know if it's possible to get this movie on DVD for a reasonable price? It's literally hundreds dollars on Amazon. Same with Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. They were also available as a 3 disc combo pack with Tokyo SOS, but that's not even available to buy.
It looks like they were only released on DVD for the "50th anniversary collection" when Final Wars came out, and they haven't been reissued since.
I see Marvel re-released this entire 24 issue series as a Marvel Essentials book. Unfortunately, I think that's just in black and white but I still think it's a steal at $9.95 (American dollars).
Thank's everyone who responded when I initially asked this question! I was hoping there would be a big giant Blu-ray box set of all the classics, but of course such a thing doesn't exist, not does a Blu-ray set for all three classic eras in their entirety.
But here's what I did find, and it's far more affordable than I initially feared! "Affordable" is a subjective term of course, and I'm excluding the outlier that is Godzilla Vs. Biollante...
The entire Showa era will be released by Criterion in October of this year (thanks warghuul for revealing this to me!)
The Heisei era does not appear to have a box set as far as I can tell, but (nearly) every film is available on Blu-ray individually or in two-packs as part of the Toho Collection.
The Millennium era also lacks a boxed set but continues the Toho Collection releases.
Any of the 1970s era Godzilla film are specifically made for a children as the primary audience.
I would start with earlier stuff, to be honest. I know one user is suggesting Final Wars, but that movie is PG-13 for a reason, and it's actually devoid of monster action despite the large monster cast. It's a film that he might like when he's 10 and older and can appreciate kung-fu movies.
Here's the entire franchise, I'll bold ones that are worth looking at and post links:
> If you want the best picture quality, absolutely go for Blu-ray. If DVD is good enough for you, then by all means go for it -- it's generally cheaper anyway. Some films are available in multi-format combo packs; if you're fine with DVD for now but might switch to Blu later, then it might make sense to grab those.
I usually prefer the multi-format option when it comes to buying anime, so multi-format it is. If not, I'll settle for a Blu-ray version.
> he rights are definitely all over the place. Here's a handy breakdown of who owns what. Those Blu-ray double features (plus Godzilla 2000) cover the Toho-produced films from the '90s and '00s.
Jeez, that's confusing. Is there anyway to break down the lists of who owns what by film era?
> Criterion has released an excellent DVD and Blu-ray of the original Godzilla from 1954, which is an absolute must.
So that's the definitive version then? Does it contain both the original Japanese version and the edited American version? Or is the American version treated as it's own separate disk?
> Other than that, as far as we know, they currently own and are apparently working on discs of the rest of the Showa Godzilla series except for King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, Godzilla vs. Hedorah, and Godzilla vs. Gigan.
So from what I can gather from this, the distribution rights to the Showa Era Godzilla films are split between Universal Pictures Home Entertainment (King Kong vs Godzilla, or as I'll call it, GZ Film #3, for the sake of convinience), Kraken Releasing (the latter three you just mentioned) and The Criterion Collection (everything else), right?
> (They also own Rodan and War of the Gargantuas; no word on whether those specifically will be released on disc.)
Speaking of that, I've noticed on these three templates that Godzilla has a lot of spinoffs. Why aren't they listed here if they're related to the Godzilla franchise? Which of these should I add to my hunt for my Godzilla movie collection?
Related Films According to Wikipedia and Wikizilla:
I know that Gamera isn't part of the Godzilla lore per se, but doe this contain all Gamera films?
> We don't yet have release dates or official announcements for any of these films, and I personally wouldn't expect to hear anything before February, which is when their May 2019 releases will be announced.
My guess for what they'll announce is that eventually Criterion will acquire the rights to these three films down the line:
I excluded King Kong vs Godzilla from that list because considering how complicated the distribution rights are, I don't see Universal giving that one up to Criterion. Especially since they own the license to King Kong after all.
> Sees 4th paragraph
I'm assuming you meant for that shopping list to be formatted like this:
> * Classic Media's Godzilla Collection box set. A good chunk of the Showa series in Japanese with subs and dubbed. OOP, but can probably be found cheaper than all the individual releases.
Right? If yes, the trick is to put a space between the list title and the list itself, otherwise it'll come out looking like a paragraph rather than a proper list itself. As for the shopping list itself, unless they have a box set of all the films, or at least one box set per film era, I'll just stick to the Blu-ray singles.
