The highest quality picture you can natively get out of the Gamecube is 480p (enhanced definition) using these: https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-GameCube-Component-Video-Cable-Pc/dp/B00005QDJU

They are very rare (due to limited production quantity) and such, very expensive. But, in layman's terms, that is the best picture you can naturally get out of the gamecube. All modern TVs have component input (Red, Green, Blue), and they look pretty great, even by today's standard. That said, only about half the Gamecube games are even capable of out putting in 480i 480p. You can find a list and more on the component cables here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_GameCube_games_with_alternate_display_modes

The other option, you can mod your Gamecube to install a HDMI out. It's difficult to do, requires a lot of knowledge, skill and tools. The easiest way is to find someone to do it for you. All that to say, it's not cheap and is more risky 9what if it breaks?).

Finally, there is a company called Bad Ass Consoles, that is "supposedly" releasing an external HDMI plug for the Gamecube called the GCVideo X, but it's still in development and has been for a while. I'm sure it won't be cheap, but all the games will look good.

The cheapest non-Gamecube-console option is to buy a Wii, which will basically do the same thing the component cables will (480p R,G,B), but much cheaper, using Wii's component cables.

Bottom line: You have options to get the gamecube to look great, but none of them are really cheap. I have the component cables. They are reliable, and I love them. It's all a matter of taste. I play the cube all the time, so even though it was expensive, I have no regrets.

If you are looking for the less expensive route, get a Wii and Wii component cables.

It'd probably be cheaper to just buy a capture card and play it off Amarec on your computer, if you don't have a TV. Then you'll have a larger screen to play on!

GameCubes are like $25, cables should be $5 each, controllers are $20. A good first party memory card is like $10.

This is the capture card I use. If you do this I'd suggest an s-video cable because the picture quality is worth it.

It really depends, do you know what brand and have looked up info about using ps1 controllers with the adapter? I know there are some other adapters like this one that state that it does support ps1 and ps2 controllers, but from the looks of it, it seems that this is the adapter you linked and someone did ask the same question about using a ps1 controller, albeit he asked about the steering wheel, but I'm pretty sure it would work. You could always return the adapter and buy a different one that supports ps1 if it doesn't.

I bought two different types of replacement thumb sticks for my controllers.

  • Notch-less Type from Amazon
  • Notched from AliExpress

The original sticks have a little notch that is cut into the side of the left stick that ensures it doesn't interfere with with a surface mounted component on the controller PCB. The ones from AliExpress have the notch and they were cheap so I ordered a set to check them out. The feel of the rubber on the sticks is OK, but not quite as nice as the notch-less ones from Amazon. The difference here is the color and thickness of the plastic. The notched ones are thinner and lower quality plastic than the notch-less ones. The notch-less stick does not seem to interfere with the PCB.

If you are interested in replacing your sticks, I definitely recommend the notch-less variety from Amazon.

I got one of these at a pawn shop awhile ago and it works great!

If you use a full size cd binder the disks will slide around and get scratched, plus this one is licensed by Nintendo so I don't see them licensing something that wasn't tested thoroughly

It’s honestly more than I could possibly need and so far so good, it’s been with me for almost a year.

Also, there’s a button you press for switching banks. You have 4 banks in total and each at around 4000 blocks or something.

Not an affiliate link, just want to share exactly what I bought.

I used to burn discs for my Gamecube, back when the Max Drive Pro was the go-to softmod :P

I had failures using various burning programs, but the one that did end up working for me was Express Burn (be warned, it installs adware and stuff). I'm not sure if it does anything special when burning, but it was the only software that ended up in success. I'll note that it still took a few tries and misreads before my discs worked in GCOS. Even after booting, there was always a risk of read errors (I never did POT adjustments on my GC).

When I did burn discs, I used Maxell miniDVDs and the DVD burner that came with my desktop.

I've transitioned to using SD Gecko/IDE->EXI + Swiss nowadays, given the ease of use.

Yes, the composite to HDMI cable is typically a third of the price. Here is a link to a cheap one.

So a bit of a follow up here - i got the new Maxell dvds today and tested out with Metroid Prime and it worked flawlessly. Tried again with Skies of Arcadia Legends and that also worked without issue.

I'm going to assume your GameCube is NTSC and recommend these:

https://www.amazon.com/DATA-connection-video-capture-GV-USB2/dp/B00428BF1Y/

https://www.amazon.com/RadioShack-4-Output-Component-Distribution-Amplifier/dp/B010EIK6K6/

Won't be 480p, but it'll still be decent. You'll also need a GameCube/N64/SNES S-Video cable and some male-to-male RCA and S-Video cables if you don't have them already.

I have it in all 7 of my GCs. I prefer the Japanese models as they had color matching GB Players. The discs arent too bad. I used these:

Philips Duplicator Grade DVD-R 8cm 4X Silver Shiny Mini 50PK Spindle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0056BYHAM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_uFQEyb92HYFW6

They always work for me.

u/Lemonade_IceCold · 1 pointr/Gamecube

Oh, no not that one. It's actually this one

Gamecube Carrying Case https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005NP4D/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Rdg5BbF137R0S

You can fit a controller in each of the side pockets, and then 2 in the front one

When you make a Japanese account it gives you the option to use a non Japanese address

They also have the controller adapters

u/ethamburger · 1 pointr/Gamecube

To my knowledge, that doesn't exist. But this does!

u/minibug · 2 pointsr/Gamecube

I have a question about this too, but I didn't want to make another thread for it. I don't have a capture card, but would this work for hooking up the Gamecube directly to a monitor?

u/SwervinGirvin · 2 pointsr/Gamecube

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Most 3rd party controllers being produced today or even from the GC's day are more often than not really junky, with the exception being the Hori controller line for GC. The Cirka line is especially bad, they may have identical molding but the build quality is way worse than a Nintendo first party controller. I've read lots of negative reviews for them from people who bought them for competitive and casual play and almost all said this controller was inoperable by the end of 2-3 weeks.

Curiously, why not opt for the Smash Bros GC controller? Even at full retail you'd spend $29.99, it would be a long term investment and you wouldn't have any button hiccups. Also used controllers are fairly inexpensive as long as you get loose ones, I'll leave some links for you to check out.

As crammond94 commented, SD media launchers are not a perfect solution, even the best SD cards will still lag during demanding sequences. Sometimes it is hard to see the lag, but it is very apparent in choppy audio.

One thing you could do for minimal investment is to burn your own miniDVDs, use your SD media Launcher to load swiss, swap disks to the burned disk, and launch it via swiss without the need for a modchip. Burned miniDVDs generally work as well as the real thing. If you go this route, burn as slowly as possible, or you may get errors on the disk.

Other than that, the most convenient method would be to mod a Wii, install USBLoaderGX and Nintendont, and load gamecube games from an external hard drive. Wiis with broken disk drives are on ebay all the time for ~$15-$20.
