I play both console and PC, there's serious positives and negatives to both but I want to set a few things straight.
controllers, keep in mind this is the equivalent of buying a mouse and keyboard for PC gaming and Alot of PC gamers own $50+ mice/keyboards.
Yes first party Wireless controllers are $50 new, but they're usually on sale for $40 or less wired are $40 new but again usually on sale, I got mine a few months ago for $25
Also there's some decent enough third party controllers that cost less such as afterglow And some that cost a little more This is Xbox prices mind you, they're the more expensive of the two and there's considerably less third party support on the Xbox
Headsets
The best (in my opinion) mono set for the Xbox is $10 But usable ones are as cheap as [$5] (http://www.amazon.com/KMD-Xbox-360-Live-Gaming-Headset/dp/B003A71XKQ/ref=pd_cp_e_0). Stereo headsets cost a bit more at $30 and up but thats the same on the PC too.
Also console games drop in price relatively quickly with one exception, the COD series.
Otherwise I agree with you.
>Stop making shit up. $30 is the high end price for gamepads, you can find them for much cheaper. $60 is the cost of a gaming keyboard or mouse. Not a gamepad.
Less making shit up and more estimating given the range of prices I have seen. I've never seen an xbox-360 or PS3 controller for less than $30.
Wired, new, $49.99 at FutureShop
Refurbished, wired, $34.99 at FutureShop
Wired, $49.60 on sale ($49.99 normal) at Amazon.ca
Wired, $39.95 at Amazon.ca
Wired, $39.95 at NCIX.com
>Plenty is a bit vague and meaningless. I would posit that the vast majority of PC gamers either have a dedicated gamepad for their PC or swap in a 360 controller (or a PS3 controller with a bit of tweaking).
I would have said the majority, but since there are no actual statistics about it I went with plenty instead because I am not in the business of relying upon anecdotal evidence and lying.
>I personally don't know a single one that doesn't. I was the last adopter of my circle of friends and I became a sworn defender of the gamepad immediately afterwards.
None of my friends have hooked up their xbox controller to their PC. The ones who do have a controller also have a console and just buy console games on that. Few of my online friends have a controller sitting next to their PC. It does depend on what games they buy on PC too though, most of them try to avoid buying bad console ports.
> I couldn't even imagine playing a game like Darksiders with a keyboard + mouse and it's one of the best games I played this generation.
I couldn't couldn't care less about Darksiders to be honest, it doesn't interest me at all. Although it is good to hear that you really enjoyed it :)
>It's incredibly whiny and pathetic to bitch about buying a cheap peripheral to get a quality experience on hundreds of games
Have you ever read your own posts?
>(yes, there are literally hundreds of PC games that have dramatically superior experiences with a gamepad).
There are literally thousands of PC games that don't support controllers and are good games (and quite often are deeper and more complex than most console games).
While there may be hundreds of console ports available, those I have played I've had very few issues with. Some of them have worked extremely well with a keyboard and mouse because the developers actually put some time and effort into the PC port (Mafia II, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Call of Juarez, Borderlands, Bioshock, Hitman: Blood Money, etc).
> Do I need a joystick
you do pretty much need to have a joystick, but nothing else is essential. A cheap joystick like this is more than good enough though, or this one which is a little more expensive but not a crazy price and comes highly recommended by a lot of people.
I'd say the learning curve's not too bad, you need to know a few basic principles of flight but nothing complex. If you go for FSX it has lessons which will take you from no-knowledge to being able to take-off, fly, and land the default planes pretty quickly, I don't know about X-Plane but I'd guess it probably has some tutorials too.
A couple things that I think you're missing are that games do get cheaper with age even on the consoles, so they're not always way up there at $60. I can buy a copy of Mass Effect 3 on the console for under $20 right now. I can buy Halo 4, a Triple-A console exclusive from 6 months ago for under $30.
As far as discounts from Steam and other sites, most of those are joint ventures with the publishers that could exist in the console space as well. Valve has come out and said that the Steam Sales are great for profits, and shares that data with publishers to get them on board for more. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo don't control the prices of games, the publishers do, and there's no reason to think that they wouldn't organize sales for their digital distribution platforms as well after seeing it's great for revenue. Sales like that aren't feasible in the brick-and-mortar world of game sales because of the prohibitive nature of organization and promotion. It's nothing comparable to loading up the online store and seeing "25%-75% off Ubisoft Titles this week only!"
Yes, but console gamers have never had to purchase additional input devices to have new experiences on their platform. No console manufacturer has ever expanded on their initial controllers to try to provide a more robust experience.
Also, KB/M is the superior control scheme for all games. Developers should be expected to release a PC game with KB/M controls that are flawless for the genre. There is no reason that any other input mechanism might enhance any PC gaming experience.
edit: This is also not KB/M but I guarantee you would like to experience it.
It's definitely not a make or break. I've played with both and the keyboard works fine, though a controller does make it feel much more natural/fluid (though this may just be because I did play it on xbox before PC). It may be worth it if there are other games you would use it with - they're $33.00 on Amazon and possibly cheaper on eBay. (game + controller would be a little over the price of a single game at standard cost)
As an aside, Dark Souls is currently my single favorite game, above even nostalgia bombs like any Zelda or Mario games.
Just finished this book, fun, interesting read for a fan of id's games.
I'd also highly recommend the same authors book about Rockstar Games and GTA called Jacked:
http://www.amazon.com/Jacked-Outlaw-Story-Grand-Theft/dp/0470936371/ref=la_B001IXU58U_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1409767795&sr=1-3
For me the GTA book was even more interesting, but it may be because I have such a huge love for their games even today, where as id hasn't been a top developer for me for a while now.
Don't listen to other posters here, buy C&C the First Decade
http://www.amazon.com/Command-Conquer-First-Decade-Pc/dp/B000CPKIT6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370125544&sr=8-1&keywords=c%26C+first+decade
For 10 bucks. Then download the patches here http://cnp.cncnz.com/tfd/
And start from the beginning. With the original c&c. One of the best games ever. Red Alert 1 is a close 2nd. Play the originals before progressing to the later games, which lost a lot of the fun for corny acting and half naked women.
Almost definitely not
Back in the day game development almost never paid royalties, it was usually an up-front and milestone payments, or a lump sum upon completion. Many game devs were using the payment from the publisher for their last game to pay salaries to develop their next game
If you're interested, "Stay Awhile and Listen" is a pretty great book covering the origins of Blizzard North, including their history of developing shovelware on contract to afford to develop later games
>Overall, I think $300 is a very fair price for a new system, especially considering that's how much you have to pay to get a decent 360.
No.
Yes, it has laughably little storage. So does the $300 WiiU. The xbox360 uses a laptop-size harddrive in an enclosure, and can be swapped out for a larger one with a little effort. The WiiU appears to be locked down.
It's also worth noting that you can easily get a "decent" xbox360 secondhand.
If the quantity and quality of releases is anything like it was on the Wii, $300 is very steep for something which most people will use sparingly for two years.
Just pay $30 for a Xbox 360 controller. It works like a charm; outstanding handling; every game I played so far (didn't play many emulators tbh) immediately recognized it.
> I'd LOVE for someone to write a book about all the dirt from inside that place.
It's your lucky day!
I read it a couple years ago so I don't remember the exact details, but it was a good read.
The game is compatible with pretty much any headset and that includes controllers.
The Odyssey+ for example is on sale right now for $229 and includes controllers. The advantage with the index is the ability to track each finger. While big, any VR controller will do just fine.
Psychonauts, Batman AA and AC, AssCreed 1&2, and Burnout Paradise all work best with a controller. I use one of these, but some prefer the PS3 controller or cheaper Logitech solution.
Check out what this user found:
>Heh, you can, actually. Just doing a quick look at Amazon gives all three games for $39.80[1][2][3].
>I'm not sure re the DLC cost, going by this site, Bring Down the Sky was free for PC, Pinnacle Station is $5, Cerebus Network is free (now), Zaeed / Firewalker Pack / Cerebus Assault / Arc Projector / Crash site were free with it, and you'd get the "online pass" thing with purchase so that's free. So total cost is $44.80 for what they're going to sell for $60. That's pretty ballsy.
If that's not ripping buyers off, I'm not sure what is.
Yes, for their physical items. Try adding a digital Kindle book to the cart, and it won't let you: https://www.amazon.com/Stay-Awhile-Listen-Legendary-Video-Game-ebook/dp/B00G8UL474

Or a digital movie: https://i.imgur.com/T3u4HAT.png
Digitals play by different rules. Guess which one EGS sells? Even iTunes and Google Play will do the same
And adding your picture in stream with the Eye, according to the amazon page.

If you have HDD space to spare it might be worth it to partition ~30GB off and install/dualboot Windows. If you only want it for this, an old version would work just fine. Probably cheaper than buying a new computer too, but then again almost any hunk of junk that still works would probably be able to play this.
I found this joystick after a quick search.
Oh okay, then YESTERDAY Metal Gear Rising was $29.99 (WHICH IS THE LISTED REGULAR PRICE and will probably return to that) and it's currently on sale for Cyber Monday specifically. When it returns to its regular price, the physical copy will again be cheaper.
Again, it's a case of "maybe one day the game you want will be on sale." Not "pc games are always cheaper." That is a lie. If that were the case, the regular listed price for Metal Gear Rising on the website you linked wouldn't be $30, almost double the physical price. (also Amazon is also listing the price for Metal Gear Rising at $9.49 which makes the digital a WHOPPING $2 cheaper...and then you can probably sell the game for $5 and it'll still be cheaper than the digital copy).
Also I specifically said that Walking Dead Season 1 is currently cheap right now but wasn't when I wanted the game, which you clearly didn't read. So okay cool I guess to just ignore what a person says.
Edit: You challenged me to find you one example.
Mass Effect 2 digital download on Amazon, $20 ($7.50 physical for PC): http://www.amazon.com/Mass-Effect-2-PC/dp/B001VJ4DHK/ref=sr_1_1_twi_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1417433920&sr=8-1&keywords=mass+effect+2
Mass Effect 2 on Steam: $20 (deluxe edition is $7.50, but only for the next day)
Mass Effect 2 physical at Gamestop, $4.99, all the time: http://www.gamestop.com/ps3/games/mass-effect-2/83995
So yeah. That's one example.
> And the prices are ridiculous, the larger ones being something like 200$.
You're off by a factor of two. A 64GB card goes for $91 on Amazon. Which is still at least twice what it should be, but not quite as bad as you make out.
> So not only do I have to think to myself before a purchase "Is this game worth the money?", I have to think, "Will I play this game enough to warrant it a spot on my memory card?"
You are aware you can delete games and re-download them later, right?
The Steam Controller is $20 off on Amazon right now. Fantastic time to pick it up.
With the SD cards and the internal storage, it's possible that they're going to be doing some caching of assets that are likely to be needed soon to the onboard storage when playing games. That would be a possible way to get around people who buy the cheapest, slowest SD cards. They could also warn when a cheap, slow SD card is inserted and that it may slow things down.
But you're quite correct that newer SD cards have vastly improved read-write speeds. U3 cards are still a bit pricier than others, but not really too much more than a C10/U1 card. And if you look at the read speeds, you're getting 80-90 MB/s, which isn't that far off from a mid-range hard drive like a WD Blue.
/u/stellvia2016
Only $60? It goes for $150 new on amazon, haha.
Metroid Prime Trilogy is almost $200 new. A new copy of Ocarina of Time goes for upwards of $300. Mass Effect Collector's Editions are super high priced ($600 for new copies).
Most people probably won't agree (or didn't even know it was possible), but Wii Classic Controller/Classic Controller Pro with the Mayflash converter is another option. If you get the Classic Controller Pro with Mayflash, it actually comes out a little cheaper than the 360 controller.
That being said, there are some conversion issues which require some other programs to work with. Still, it's a nice controller.
They're both still sold on Amazon, not sure why others are saying pirating is the only option.
Halo 1
Halo 2
Of course i'm not sure how well they'll run and what sort of unofficial fixes/patches you might need to get them playable.
Still, a port of MCC would be amazing.
All DLC is 80% off too.
Also, Amazon has it for $10 - thanks to timpkmn89
>(This one for example claims up to 275MB/s, but apparently tends to be around 200 in real usage)
And it's $100. People are more likely gonna for cards like this, which is likely gonna be slower than internal.
This is a pretty shitty deal then. PS3 owners are really the only ones getting anything out of this and if you already own Mass Effect 2 and 3 you can buy Mass Effect 1 as a digital download on the PSN.
Amazon actually has Mass Effect 3 on sale for $20 right now on any platform. Origin was selling it for $16 just last month.
If you can wait until a holiday sale you can probably get Mass Effect 1 and 2 for $10-15 total. Amazon had each on sale for $5 last February.
I'm kind of split. I do feel that the community generally does a better job of evaluating games than rushed professional critics who have to crank out review after review, and aggregators like Metacritic in particular do a poor job of capturing nuance, there are occasional instances where mob mentality takes over and one or two displeasing aspects of an otherwise decent game end up resulting in hundreds of one-star reviews (example: Mass Effect 3, which is mostly a good game with a poorly executed ending). I could see the Metascore acting as a hedge against these mobs.
Here.
You're welcome.
It did better in Japan than America, but to my knowledge it didn't do "well". I love my Vita. I think it's a great little machine, especially since like visual novels. I just know that I have to pick and choose which games to have installed at any given time because there's no way I'm buying another memory card. It's actually worse than I thought it was.
You can buy a good headset for 229 right now, that's comparable to a monitor. https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT
Good news! Amazon has HR for 16.99 for PC download and it activates on steam! They did have a sale earlier that HR was $10 and I picked it up then, but this isn't a bad deal.
http://www.amazon.com/Deus-Ex-Revolution-Standard-Download/dp/B005HRZ29K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325363534&sr=8-1
You're lucky you could even get it a month ago; It's out of print. Look how much it is on amazon.

They're $25 on Amazon, and they're not required. And the camera is only $50 on Amazon and can be bought cheaper.

Are you serious right now? Here's a micro SD card with 200 GB of storage. Its dimensions are 0.04 x 0.59 x 0.43 inches, and it weighs 0.3 ounces. GTA V would fit on this thing like three times over.
Anywhere?
You can get one off Newegg or Amazon for around that cheap. Both wired and wireless are around the same price, and they go on sale quite often. I bought one not long ago for $18.99 off Newegg.

Looking at how much time and money they put into building their cities throughout the years (this book covers it in detail, but trust me it's a lot) I doubt they'd do it for a $20 expansion.
Great news! You can buy your 540p vita without a dock or wireless controls for just $233.
And unlike paying the EXORBITANT price of $16 for a 64gb fast sd card, you can get one of the cheaper Vita specific cards for just $20 (per 8gb).
I mean, in comparison, it's practically a steal.

@mariux -- maybe it's available on amazon.no?
I'm surprised nobody mentioned the book, Jacked. It's by the same guy who wrote Master's of Doom. It's a great book and mainly covers the development of GTA up to GTA 4, but also gives a glimpse into the rise of Rockstar. I highly recommend reading it.
Edit: Grammar. I suck.
Looks like the list price is $50, but Amazon has them for $37
*$23 on amazon https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-microSDXC-Standard-Packaging-SDSQUNC-064G-GN6MA/dp/B010Q588D4/
I get taken here. I can probably hunt down a copy on local shelves as well .
It is a limited edition it turns out so yeah it's out of print. There were only so many made in the first place. There are still many copies available.
Didn't even look did you? You can get a decent 64GB microSD car for $16. They're not expensive anymore. Haven't been for years.
https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-microSDXC-Standard-Packaging-SDSQUNC-064G-GN6MA/dp/B010Q588D4/
How are microSDs extremely expensive storage? Unless you're going for the latest cards that have a whopping 500gbs of storage on them, at most you can get a 128gb one for about $70 dollars depending on where you go. Even 200gb ones are under $100 dollars on Amazon.

Yup. Steam Controller.
Probably bought it through Amazon.
I bought mine for $300. You can find cheaper models, all of which are still higher resolution than the PSVR with higher refresh rate, starting at $120.

It's even cheaper on Amazon
Jacked: The Outlaw Story of GTA
I remember a redditor telling me about it, talks a lot about the media reaction to the game.
Where did you see it for $300 CAD? It’s $500 on amazon.ca
The ps4 does have a camera.
The pro controller doesn't use sockets -- unless you mean USB in which case it is a different socket. The classic controller pro does use the Wiimote socket.
Ahhh, I see. What you're referring to as the classic controller others are saying is the pro controller.
Apparently, this is the classic controller and the one you are showing is called the classic controller pro.
The 32 is $73 on amazon. And if you import it from Japan the 64 is 104.
Is it really the naming schemes though? The Wii and WiiU Both had equivalent "Pro" controllers. I think for a lot of people when nintendo says "pro controller" it is assumed to be the non-gimmick controller.

It basically works out to the Kinect 2.0 costs $100. That's the reason its cheaper. The Playstation camera is not packaged with the console and costs $59.
Xbone with Kinect 2.0: $499
PS4 with Camera: $458
You know that brand-new consoles these days are only $250, right?

Not sure why this guy got downvotes.
Halo was definitely on PC.
For anyone not willing to wait, and/or who doesn't care about the new titles, The First Decade is a compliation of all the games up to Generals.
Congrats, but do you really think someone is going to drop $120 to buy 4 XBOX controllers at once?
Either you've got a lot of money to spare or you got those controllers separately, over a decent period of time.
Do you really think everyone else has the same access to resources as you do?
The "First Decade" C&C collection can be found on Amazon, and IIRC has no DRM.
http://www.amazon.com/Command-Conquer-First-Decade-Pc/dp/B000CPKIT6/
Unfortunately, it's not as many games as the Ultimate Collection has (seven games, 5 expansion packs in the Decade pack).
You in America? If so http://www.amazon.com/Deus-Ex-Revolution-Standard-Download/dp/B005HRZ29K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342185265&sr=8-1&keywords=deus+ex+human+revolution+%5Bdownload%5D 50 cents cheaper than it was on Steam, plus it's a steamworks title
(Some people from outside of America get in on amazon deals by changing their address, not sure if there can/will be any punishment for that. I know there was a post a few weeks back about someone being banned from Amazon, but I think it ended up being unrelated)
What if I told you...that they both were already on PC, both over a decade now.

Hell there's even a established modding scene for Halo 1 & 2 on PC
